Race-based discipline in Tucson schools
I am sure Eric Holder and his racial preference-mongers (not to mention the “social justice” purveyors at Obama’s Department of Education) approve:
Tucson schools create race-based system of discipline

The Arizona Republic…The board is calling for a two-tiered form of student discipline. One for Black and Hispanic students; one for everyone else.
With the goal of creating a “restorative school culture and climate” that conveys a “sense of belonging to all students,” the board is insisting that its schools reduce its suspensions and/or expulsions of minority students to the point that the data reflect “no ethnic/racial disparities.”
From the section of the 52-page plan titled “Restorative School Culture and Climate,” subhead, “Discipline”:
“School data that show disparities in suspension/expulsion rates will be examined in detail for root causes. Special attention will be dedicated to data regarding African-American and Hispanic students.”
The board approved creating an “Equity Team” that will oversee the plan to ensure “a commitment to social justice for all students.”
The happy-face edu-speak notwithstanding, what the Tucson Unified School District board of governors has approved this summer is a race-based system of
discipline.Offenses by students will be judged, and penalties meted out, depending on the student’s hue.

I believe this implies that blacks and hispanics are less able to control themselves because of their culture of rap, unwed pregnancies, welfare, etc. and because they have been getting a “pass” for years because of their race! Instead of dealing with the core issues, they just get preferential treatment and blame whitey. Sounds like the current administration in DC, don’t you think? It is the same reasoning that says there are more blacks in prison, so it must be racism…rather than, maybe, just maybe, more blacks commit crimes, proportionally.
I am so sick of this stuff!! Let’s make these kids responsible for what they do…all races equally. Gee, what a concept! MLK would love it, I’m sure. I miss him.

You just can’t fix stupid.
This isn’t new… in the school district near where I live in Southern California, the principals of the schools are regularly told to cut back on the suspension of blacks. They cause most of the trouble, but it looks raaaaaacist if they are suspended too much.
We are going to have to get rid of our simpering guilt and just start dealing with the problem…
So these kids are being judged by the color of their skin but not by the content of their character.
MLK must be spinning in his grave.
All of these public school teachers and administrators are spoon fed “Whitey Guilt” all through their college education, and even more so getting their teacher’s certificate.
You have to either be a Bleeding Heart Liberal to be a teacher, or pretend to be one in order to get your certification.
We seem to be being dragged backwards by all of these forward thinking progressives.

Folks this sort of stuff goes on today without any sort of seal of approval from a gubmint agency. The only thing that makes this newsworthy is that they have gone on the record.
Teachers and administrators blame No Child Left Behind, it imposes penalties on schools with too many discipline problems which a) results in schools hiding discipline issues, and b)applying discipline differently based on the racial make up a school.
When my daughter was in high school the county had probation officers who had regular office hours at the school, yet the school never seemed to have any incidents on school property, so they always dodged sanctions. Anybody who believes that juvenile delinquents suddenly turn into model citizens just because they are on school property needs to contact me about some beachfront property I have for sale in AZ.
I wonder what the AZ schools think of African-Mexicans, African-Brazilians, African Canadians, or African-Peruvians. Better or lower than a roach?
I spent one day in a North Carolina school (brand new high school) in 2006 as a substitute.
What I saw was the white kids being completely dominated by the black and hispanic kids to the point they would not talk at all. I told the assistant principal after school that I had it. I was not going to waste my time if kids were unwilling to show any respect.
That was the end of my career as a substitute and laugh when they complain about a lack of math and science teachers.
If I were a parent, I would not send my kid to a public school for a second.

You don’t suppose some Black and Hispanic students will see this as a ‘Get Out of Jail Free’ card for some anti-social behavior they might otherwise been deterred from committing?
Naturally, rather than fix problems that vex one segment of a population “progressives” seek the most remarkably stupid “solution.”
Their idiotic/ progressive minds recognize only two possible ways to address this issue. Either preemptively punish all “white” kids or punish x number of “white” kids every time a minority kid is punished. The “white” kids will have to be chosen by form of lottery.
Of course “white” in the progressive mind will mean any body not black or Hispanic so Asian kids will be called “white” for this purpose.
Round up the usual suspects!
So it sounds to me as though they are admitting that the last 40 years of touchy-feely, self-esteem building has been an abject failure.
My kids are half-Chinese/Hawaiian, but they really pulled to the White side in looks.
Will the discipline go by appearance of “whiteness,” or will the birth certificate be used?
Social Justice = Punish more kids because some kids behaves like barbarians.
Social Injustice = Teach kids not to behave like barbarians to begin with.
Asians have screwed themselves as a minorty/immigrant group in this country by working hard, respecting the value of an education, and quickly assimilating as Americans.
Just check the Cal-Berkeley admissions quotas. Asians are almost as bad as White people.
Question:
If a Black or Hispanic kid and a White kid are caught damaging school property (grafitti, etc.), will each kid pay 50% of the cost to repair damage in restitution, or will there be some sliding scale, say, the Black kid pays 15% and the White kid pays 85%?
Ultimately the government will have to issue national identity cards that define the race of everyone. It is the only way to make this work.
My kids are part Anglo, part Filipino and they look pretty Caucasian to me and most people I know. I guess they will be punished since since they are not part of a “recognized minority” without those racial identity cards.
Whatever happened to “post-racial” America? I guess we can thank “world renowned scholar” Skippy Gates for this…

1) Black and Hispanic kids, you are not able to learn, follow ruls and act as well as White kids.
2) White kids, you must be punished more severly for your wrongs and your Black and Hispanic friends will get off easier.

Whenever you hear the term “social justice” remember that it is something different than unqualified “justice.”
Justice may not always be easily determined by fallible humans, but if we start out by seeking a special variant of justice, injustice is the inevitable result.

The phrase “root causes” in this context is doublespeak for blaming society for individual irresponsibility, underachievement, criminal activity, and generally being one of the “have not” victim class. This pervasive mind set comes from the philosophy that says mankind’s chief problem is socio-economic. If enough money and social justice can be thrown at the “victim”, his inherent natural goodness will break through. When the individual fails, it’s because society let him down by not providing him with a good enough environment. The individual is not held responsible for his/her actions, thus encouraging more irresponsibility – or worse. Of course, it takes a lot of money and studied patience to test this naive and fallacious theory. No sane person or fiscally sound organization would bet the farm on coddled losers who leave a trail of misery and grief wherever they go. That’s where big government comes in. They MAKE us help (i.e. enable) these narcissistic brats and non-functional adults. An off duty sheriff’s deputy called me once on a charity drive. As part of their anti-drug campaign they were taking donations to buy goody baskets for troubled teens to reward them for staying off of drugs. I told him that I didn’t believe in bribing people to stay good. I told him a much more cost effective technique on how to deal with people who’ve committed horrible drug-induced crimes. Take them out into the public square and put bullets into their brains. …that it would solve the problem overnight. The deputy listened to me and was silent for a few seconds. Then he replied, “Well, I’ll have to agree with you.”
Actually, the bone heads in the Tucson school district are probably just caving to political correctness and the usual threats from the pervasive ethnic shakedown artists. They probably know that the real reason why blacks and Hispanic kids get in trouble more is that whites are afraid to call them on their behavior. Our American culture is under assault. More and more concessions are being exacted everyday. It’s never enough. Government is getting bigger and more intrusive all the time ostensibly to enact “fairness”. There’s a huge segment of our population that is united on Conservative principles. We’re being discounted, dismissed, and disrespected by the big government “powers that be” – and it’s getting worse with no end in sight. One of these days, we’re going to draw the line and say “no more”. It could get really ugly.
Maybe the root cause is that there are pockets of bad kids.

Huh? Why not just give them HS diplomas at birth and let them bypass all the trouble of attending school? Large numbers remain illiterate by the time they graduate anyway. Any wonder that a HS diploma has essentially no value today?

CPS spends MILLIONS on metal detectors and armed police on school grounds every year. Why? In 2003 the CPS reported
6,455 arrests of students aged 14-17
8,639 total arrests during the same time
830 arrests of children under 12
Blacks make up 50% of the student body, yet are involved in
84% of elementary school suspensions
77% of violations
78% of expulsions
HOW in the world would ANYONE make “no racial disparities” work in this case?

bradley; it’s not fair to argue race with facts. it’s not what’s correct, but what’s politically correct. keep paying your taxes and send your kids to private school. but… everytime you hear about a tax increase for your school district, vote against it.
The beauty of “progressivism” is its predictability: its devotees really do believe that two wrongs make a right, which means that sooner or later their “solution” to any given problem ends up with an inverted status quo ante.
Thus, the adoption of a “Separate and Unequal” standard for minorities which is supposed to help them overcome past racism becomes a new form of racism itself.
The central problem for blacks and hispanics isn’t “Whitey,” “The Man,” “Structural Racism” or “The Legacy of Slavery.” It is instead their own refusal to grow up socially and take responsibility for themselves, coupled with the imposition of condescending racism by white liberals (a.k.a., “The Soft Bigotry of Low Expectations”) that encourages them to nurse grievances and demand atonement and compensation for wrongs that don’t exist anymore and to which they personally have never been subject.
As long as we encourage blacks and hispanics to look for external white bogeymen to explain away their home-grown problems, it remains unrealistic to expect them to address those problems. But then again, such self-imposed exile from the cultural, political and economic mainstream precisely what liberals want for them, forever.

Interesting article. While at U of Memphis, I heard lots of PC racial garbage and once told a group of black clasmates that I am more African-American than all of them combined.
They told me it was impossible since I am white, and said it is if you are born in Cape Town, South Africa (and implied that I was). For the first time, they were speechless and couldn’t speak. The look on their face was a Master-Card moment and simply Priceless.

Hey…its easier than instilling in kids a desire to learn, the value of an education, and respect for themselves and others.

So if I understand this nitwittery correctly, the two black kids beating the white kid on the school bus in Bellevue would have been suspended for 10 days, and the white kid being beaten would have been suspended for 5 days to make it equal?
I was a recruiter for the military in NC about 10 years ago. One of my high schools in a predominately black town had a less than 50% graduation rate. The parents were furious but the solution was not to improve educational standards- they wanted their children to get diplomas no matter how uneducated they turned out after 4 years of high school. I didn’t waste much of my time there because although a diploma is accepted by the military, you still have to pass the entrance exam. Few of them could get a minimum score. “Thanks mom and dad for setting me up for success. The military doesn’t even want me.”
This is wrong on so many levels. If White students start getting into trouble at a higher rate than minorities, will they reduce punishment for whites at the expense of minorities to even racial disparities? Of course not!
If troublesome male students outnumber troublesome female students, will they punish the females more harshly to make up for the disparity? Not a chance!
Isn’t it obvious what some of the unintended consequences for this policy will be? First of all, when minority students start getting a pass for bad behavior, they will act out even more. And when white students get more harsh punishment, they will act out a little less. The disparity will increase not decrease. They will either have to ignore almost all bad behavior on the part of minority students, or they will have to find more white students to punish, even if they have to select them at random.
What will happen if minority students attack a white student for sitting next to them on the bus? To prevent a disparity in the data they will have to punish the white student at least as harshly as the minority students, and maybe even harsher to meet quota.
What a great way to establish a feeling of entitlement in minority students. They will expect the same favorable treatment in the real world when they become adults. And when they don’t get that “get out of jail” card, they will blame it on racism.

Wow! I was wondering when we would implement Affirmative Action for budding young criminals. Let’s take it one step further into the World of absurdity. We can make murder, robbery, rape, and all other violent crimes legal for persons deemed minorities. That should take care of those pesky crime statistics for people of color.

The Asians and Subcontinent Indians, those pesky Jews, are graduating High School at around 100% compared the district wide 70%. Take away those Asians and Subcontinent Indians, and those pesky Jews, American Hispanics and “white-other” and that 70% gets real ugly-around 45%.
I could say the illegals and anchor babies come from homes that often do not value education much less English but that would be racist so I will not say it.
But a lot of Asians and Subcontinent Indians, those pesky Jews, American Hispanics and “white-other” do seem to graduate. I do not know-I seemed to graduate just fine with half the coaches in North America hitting me at least once. They came here just to hit ME. Either it was because I was Hispanic/Chicano/Mexican or a smart alec-take your choice.
Ugh, AZ is a place I was looking to, to escape INSANE CALIFORNIA…
