I am finding the whole climate change and global warming debate to be very interesting. The EU is very pushy about telling us to reduce CO2 emissions but in a recent trip through southern Germany from the stacks of firewood everywhere, I don’t mean little stacks here and there, big stacks all over small towns, it appears that wood is the primary heat source. I have also heard(from Italians in Italy) that Italy offers tax incentives to people buying and using wood burning heaters.

This confuses me, I may be wrong but I was under the impression that burning wood released more CO2 into the atmosphere than any other form of energy.

What about all those folks who get their ‘heat’ and ‘light’ paid for?

Why do they get to keep their thermostats set at 80 degrees in the winter & I’m forced to wear my coat to bed?

Just got around to reading the story. I'll submit my comment for the one or two of you who might still be around to read it.

Energy Department spokesman Dan Leistikow added: “Secretary Chu was not comparing the public to teenagers. He was saying that we need to educate teenagers about ways to save energy."

Per the same article, these are the words which were, according to Leistikow, twisted and taken out of context:

“The American public…just like your teenage kids, aren’t acting in a way that they should act,” Dr. Chu said. “The American public has to really understand in their core how important this issue is.”

Chu also says that the cost of electricity should reflect the use of it.

Chu said currently most local electricity rate commissions view themselves as consumer advocates and try to keep electricity prices as low as possible. "Hopefully that will evolve somewhat, so that they begin to fold in some of the real costs of electricity generation and electricity use," Chu said at conference focused on creating a "smart grid." For instance, on hot summer days when air conditioning use is high, utilities would charge customers more for electricity. Chu said those who set rates should be more lenient with electricity generated from cleaner sources such as wind or nuclear power.

So if you want to stave off the effects of global warming, you should pay more, and those who use green power should get rewarded with a cheaper rate. According to Chu, people should be informed on how to use more electricity at off-peak times and less at peak times. So do the wash in your sleep, and no TV after you get home from work. Got it? (I'm waiting for my stock in the Yankee Candle Co. to skyrocket. Just a matter of time.) In the meantime, the EPA will team with the PTO to let your kids know how to conserve energy by traveling to 6,000 schools to spread the message. Really. That's in the article Michelle linked to. But their footprints ain't made of carbon---they're made of gold, baby. Sweet, sweet gold. Also, big business is bad, unless you're in the international green energy business.

It’s 32 above here in SW Alaska at 11pm on 9/22. Winters are as cold as ever here, and this one looks like it might be even colder! I would invite some global warming creeps to come and spend a winter here on the Alagnak River and then tell me about Gorebull Warming (Only problem being we might not get along too well). Hey Chu, come and freeze your tail off, you might learn something.

My sincere hope is in that the not-too-distant future, the next Republican president makes it a point to completely defund Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory (home of Mr. Chu and others of his ilk), and move the money to the nearby Lawrence Livermore Laboratory to restart the Reliable Replacement Warhead program, along with an updated neutron warhead program.
