“Mmm mmm mmm:” New details about the Dear Leader song video; Update: School responds

In case you were wondering which school taught kids that “Barack Hussein Obama mmm mmm mmm” rap that I posted yesterday afternoon, here are some new details.

The video was originally posted in June 2009 here by YouTube user “brandnuwords.” Update: She has now removed the video sometime this morning. Here is the screenshot:

“Brandnuwords” is the YouTube account of Charisse Carney-Nunes. More on her in a moment.

YouTube user “alteredbeat” re-posted the video on September 6 here.

Alteredbeat e-mailed Carney-Nunes to inquire about the location of the school. She told him it was a school in South Jersey.

This screenshot from the video…

…matches up with this picture of the auditorium at B. Bernice Young Elementary School in Burlington Township, NJ:

I have e-mailed the principal of the school with the following questions:

Did Ms. Carney-Nunes have permission to videotape the performance?

Were parents notified that their children would be participating in this activity prior to the lesson?

Was Ms. Carney-Nunes invited to the school to teach the children the song and about her book, “I am Barack Obama?”

Was the principal aware of this event and taping?

Back to Charisse Carney-Nunes. Via ModernConservative, Carney-Nunes is senior vice president of The Jamestown Project, “the award-winning author of the children’s books, I Am Barack Obama (2009),” and according to her biography, “a graduate of Harvard Law School, where she was a schoolmate of President Obama.” I have e-mailed Carney-Nunes for comment as well.

The Obama school song video that she taped shows her book featured on an easel next to the children hailing Dear Leader. She promotes her book as a tool that “allows children to see themselves through the inspirational story of President Obama growing up as an ordinary child asking, Who will change the world? Ultimately, he realizes that he will.”

She has spread this creepy cult message to schoolchildren across the country.

Coming to a classroom near you?

We already know what the response will be to critics of this elementary school agitprop: Raaaaaacist!

Mark Tapscott at the Examiner has a related warning on the driving force behind the progressive movement.

Guess he’s just another “kook,” too.

***

Jon at Exurban League has a response from the school district confirming the rap session as an official school activity.

The poorly written statement is posted on the school district’s site.

Uh, huh. And if black people want to complain about being discriminated against by big banks that refuse to them loans or charge them more than white people … then they should become big banks themselves. Problem solved, just like that. Right?

I think it’s a little easier for an average joe or jill to become a teacher than start a bank.

When I was in school, the “teacher was always right”. That no longer applies. If you assure your children that they need to stand up for their beliefs, it will give them the courage they need. They just need to know they have their parent’s support. Oh, and make sure they get self-defense training. My five-year-old grandson is taking TAE-KWON-DO. He also will be going hunting with his daddy when he is a bit older. Good stuff.

    Not so fast there.

Say the situation was reversed, and most teachers were devout Christains. And based on that let’s say they decided to abandon the teaching of evolution in schools in favor of a strict Biblical creationist explanation. Would you shrug your shoulders and say “well, if we don’t like it we should get more liberal teachers”? Or would you instead insist that some professional standards can and should be adhered to no matter what a person’s personal beliefs?

A teacher shouldn’t have to be a Conservative to see that this kind of nonsense is over the line, and any reasonable person should be able to see a line between instruction and indoctrination. If you’re saying that Liberals are incapable of doing that then you’re saying their either less intelligent than the rest of us or that they just can’t help acting in bad faith.

We all know what the problem is and the obvious solutions:

    1. We MUST take the schools back from the socialists. Teachers who do not fall into this category are welcome.

    2. School choice, competition, will reveal every failing of the NEA by showing them up in academic acheivement. Check out the private school performance test scores.

    3. Conservatives, you and I, must make the necessary sacrifices to take up the mantle of teaching the way it used to be- you know, when America lead the world in academia (or at least competed on an equal basis).

I for one will get involved and persue this as a second career. I will seek out, volunteer and campaign for candidates running on this platform. I will not stop until the monopoly of the teacher’s union is dismantled.

I get the impression you felt you might be agreeing too much with the general sentiment here and had to throw something–ANYTHING–negative to dismiss any notion of actually agreeing.

So the solution is for every parent that finds this objectionable to quit their jobs and go become a teacher? Hey! You might be on to something!

Less the “quit your job” part I think it’s called “home school”…

Funny, that’s pretty much my public school experience. I didn’t complain. I chalked it up to living in the Bible Belt, and I challenged my teachers when I disagreed (fortunately they were smart and engaged me). I don’t regret a damn thing.

Now this sort of crap obviously crosses the line, and I’m not saying there should be any excuse for it. But when you have one side skewed, you’re going to have unfortunate, extreme cases like this. Like my Bible-thumping algebra teacher who told me Gandhi went to hell because he wasn’t a Christian. (Btw said algebra teacher has since come out as a lesbian, so I guess she’s joining Mahatma.)

They sure get it when an old, antiquated, backwards, far-right extremist Christian tries to influence their students’ mores. The administration at a junior high school in Anchorage, AK (a city I lived in for 15 years) chastised a teacher for teaching that abstinence is the best way to avoid STDs. Didn’t see many Liberals just “getting over it” and in those types of cases, they seldom, if ever do.

Liberals are the FIRST to reach for authority to slap down practices or ideas they find objectionable.

I recall a book called “The Worm in the Apple.” It was an expose on the school systems in NYC. Thanks to union rules, they pay quite a few teachers to stay home and do nothing who were convicted of felonies because of union rules. I also recall how text books were “obsolete” because wording in one or two paragraphs were changed just so publishers would get paid for work they had already been paid to do. The amount of waste, fraud and abuse in the schiool system is epic. Investigate your local district and call out EVERY abuse! It is time to hold these people accountable. Good teachers have nothing to fear. Poor teachers had better start rewriting their resumes. Or they could run for president.

No we don’t need to get over it. In the world of education there should be no area of knowledge that is off the table. However, when a child is under 18, the parents should filter what is taught not some political ideologue. After that, the student can decide for themselves in spite of their tenured progressive college professors.

Actually, if you knew anything about teaching and the general education profession, it isn’t at all easy to become a teacher. You don’t automatically become a teacher in most states just because you have a college degree. Most states require certification (even for substitute teachers) along with the requisite testing like the Praxis.

Do you also realize that there is a teacher surplus going on right now? There are thousands of teachers out of work right now. There are many talented teachers with advanced degrees who will never be hired because they cost too much. I am one of those teachers in the Social Studies/History field who’ve had to make other plans.

Teaching is no longer a “fall-back” profession. You can do anything in this country, including starting a bank. However, you can no longer enter the field of teaching because there are 100′s of people fighting for the same position as you. I’m not willing to put my life on hold, waiting for years to get a full-time position as I deceive myself into getting my foot in the door by substitute teaching. I’ve already discovered that I can make twice the money I used to make subbing in the private sector.

Do you live in the real world or what?

Notice this part of the arrogant and unrepentant statement put out by the liberal superintendent:

Our curriculum studies, honors and recognizes those who serve our country. The recording and distribution of the class activity were unauthorized.

Translation: We do this type of thing all the time, and the crime was to let other people find out about it through an “unauthorized recording.” You parents and citizens are not allowed to know what goes on in our government public schools. Your children belong to us.

Burlington Township School District does have a way of getting into the news, doesn’t it? From Wikipedia:

    Allegations of religious intolerance

On March 22, 2007, Burlington Township High School scheduled a simulated Columbine-like school shooting, lockdown and evacuation where Burlington Township police detectives posed as Christian fundamentalists who became angry (when a student was expelled for praying before class) and begin shooting students in order to “seek justice.” [4] The World Net Daily website ran the story on April 3, 2007. and quoted Bob Pawson, a spokesman of Scriptures In School, as characterizing the simulation as a “grotesque scenario saturated with Christian-bashing prejudice and bigotry; a scenario which could never possibly occur.” [5]

In response to the news coverage, the Burlington Township School District issued an official statement saying:

Any perceived insensitivities to our religious community as a result of the emergency exercise are regrettable. It was certainly not the intent to portray any group in a negative manner. We cherish, respect, and celebrate the diversity of cultures and faith that exist within our community” and the district respected the right of students and faculty to pray on school grounds. [6]

The school district had no knowledge of the chosen scenario, however, which was chosen by the township police department

Today we became aware of a video that was placed on the internet which has been reported in the media. The video is of a class of students singing a song about President Obama. The activity took place during Black History Month in 2009, which is recognized each February to honor the contributions of African Americans to our country. Our curriculum studies, honors and recognizes those who serve our country. The recording and distribution of the class activity were unauthorized.

    Two follow up questions here:

    1. In Feb 09 Obama had only been President for roughly 1 month, so what exactly were his accomplishments that would merit such praise?

    2. By your statement the function was sanctioned by the school, but not the recording and distribution. Was this an attempt to keep a lid on what activities are going on in your school?

He doesn’t need any – he is the first [half]Black President. have you been living in a cave?

Based on the reports of prior events in that district – I would say the odds are high that was EXACTLY the plan. have the parents in this town been living in caves? Or is this simply a liberal hotbed. The town cops certainly don’t appear to an old retired copper like me to be to damned smart if that “hostage situation” deal is any indication. Was there a public uproar about that, I wonder?

The school is probably in CYA mode. I’ll bet dollars to doughnuts that they do not have publicity releases on all of the students seen in that video. A willing parent would have a valid and sustainable lawsuit for the unauthorized release of their childs image. The admins at this school (and culpable teachers) need to be fired for being incredibly stupid, and putting children at risk.

In the MD video, did anyone notice how unfazed the ACORN workers were to hear the purpose for James and Heather’s house purchase, like they had heard this sort of thing before? That needs to be checked into and hopefully will, thanks to the disclosure and publicity brought on by the lawsuit.

As for the MD law, Rags is right – this will not work in ACORN’s favor. First, the Constitutional right of the press to investigate is sure to trump this law. Like Rags said, the MD law was not intended to provide cover for illegal activity.

Second, who is to say what constitutes expected privacy and a wiretap – I mean, have the people who argue this never seen the video or been to see a loan officer at a bank?

The video clearly shows the doors to what looks more like a conference room than an office, wide open and presents audible sounds of a child or children and adults talking in the next room. It was as open and non-intimate a setting as the hip-high cubicles that mark off loan officers work desks in bank lobbies, where borrows most private financial info is stated before every customer in the bank.

Expected privacy in conversation is implied to mean intimate, personal discussion between two people – unless explicitly stated otherwise; the MD law leaves too much open to interpretation.

I know ACORN was compelled to instigate a lawsuit because they were caught and need to create doubt if they are to survive the scandal, but they really need to rethink this.
