Community organizing has not stopped Chicago’s teen violence epidemic. The Olympics will not solve this long-festering problem, either.
The latest:
The family of Derrion Albert, the 16-year-old fatally beaten Thursday in an after-school mob melee in Roseland, struggled Friday to understand how their honor roll student’s life could have ended in such violence.
“Derrion has never been in a fight in his life,” said Joe Walker, Derrion’s grandfather who raised him. “He never raised his voice. Not in 16 years have I had one day of trouble.”
Walker broke down several times speaking about his grandson, proudly showing off the awards he received at Christian Fenger Academy High School for excellent attendance and being on the honor roll. Derrion had just started his junior year.
“We were crazy about him,” Walker said. “He was the type of grandson everybody wished for.”
Monique Bond, Chicago Public Schools spokeswoman, said Derrion “basically was walking along unprovoked, and unbeknownst to him he was about to walk into this conflict. I don’t think he even saw them coming.”
Three thugs were charged in Albert’s beating death today.

The Chicago public school system has about 407,000 students in 666 schools. It is the nation’s third-largest school district and has been plagued by violence in recent years. During the 2007-2008 school year, at least 20 students were killed, including 18 by gunfire. The year before, more than 30 students were killed, again most by gun violence.

Hope, change, and coffins. Somehow I don’t think these problems will be addressed in Obama’s sweeping overhaul of schools.
I wonder if inmates attempting to learn in prison face any better conditions? This is the face of our vaunted public education system, and Obama wants more of it? …and we’re expected to pay hard-earned tax dollars to support this sham of a system? Government – at all levels – needs to get out of the business of educating. It ain’t workin’, folks!

Remember how athletes wore surgical masks when they went to Beijing in 2008? If Chicago gets the Olympics in 2016, they’ll be wearing uniforms made from Kevlar.
One of the local network news had a video of the fight which is being used by the police to identify the assailants. It is equally appalling and heart wrenching that this level of violence not only happened, but that so many of the students interviewed weren’t at all surprised.
If only these kids had more self esteem.
Prison authorities at least have the means to deal with fights when they break out. From what I have seen, Chicago school authorities are simply at a loss as to how to deal with the problem.

, however, I believe one cause is too much self esteem. Pride and bullying appear to be a central theme here.

Interesting. Derrion Albert was beaten to death but you notice how important it is to the media to let us know that most of these students are killed by guns.
Maybe we should have some type of “2×4 Control.” Only people with permits can buy them and all 2x4s have to be registered.
That should stop all of this youth violence. Because we know it has nothing to do with the complete incompetence of the Chicago city government.
Amazing. There were people standing around watching, and filming, this brutality. My adrenalin would have been so high, I would have been sprinting away from that mob scene. Of course, being white, if I ever found myself around something like that, I would know the violence could easily turn on me just by being there. These people are animals and easily caught up in mob mentality. Thank god I don’t have to live around them.

I personally believe that self esteem must be earned, not taught. We can teach kids that they have some basic worth as a human being, but the “everybody gets a trophy” mentality does nothing but foster a sense of entitlement. Then when one child acheives more, the “crabs in a bucket” theory takes over and violence is always a result.
We allowed well meaning academics to make our kids this way by giving them the authority to teach our children as they saw fit in the kids best interest.

This should seal it for those even slightly considering a visit to Chicago if HRH ‘Bambi nabs the Olympics. That is the one hellhole I’d never consider spending any time in – 1 1/2 hrs. on a tarmac is too long to. At least at the airport, I’d have TSA for protection.

Three arrests have ben made:
Cook County state’s attorney’s office spokesman Andy Conklin says the teens under arrest, Silvanus Shannon, 19, Eugene Riley, 18, and Eric Carson, 16, were charged with first-degree murder as adults. They were denied bond during a court appearance.

Derrion Albert was getting good grades, obeying the law, not joining gangs, respecting elders, respecting women and girls. He probably displayed knowledge of truth and had a huge vocabulary.
In my school, mostly black, that behavior was consistant with “acting white”, and was a sure way to get, at the very least, jeers and shunning, at the worst, beatdowns.
Thanks to Malcom X (pre-conversion), the majority of the ghetto community has disdain for all of these things and for any of their own who practice these things.
-Success (legit, legal success from hard, legal work) is Acting White. -Naming your child “Susan” or “Anthony” or any other non-made-up name is Acting White.

-Raising one’s hand in school and getting good grades is Acting White.

I’m curious about the person filming the event. The amount of indifference towards this violent attack is tragic. Somehow I doubt that this was filmed in order to help the police (even though that has been the one positive outcome from this video). Was this filmed on a cellular phone? If not, did the person filming know what was going to take place beforehand?

At some point, can’t we just take a 2X4 to the heads of all the liberal sociologists, psychologists, and educators who helped to create this regime of terror that infests our young people today? They are the ones who should be paying the price, not shining stars like young Darrion Albert.

True, but its one of those things that I tend to notice and why I tend to profile groups of people before they act.
My profiling includes:
1) Large numbers (ie more than 1) of teens walking in a group that are not part of an organised sports team.
2) Certain ethnic and age groups acting in a suspicious manner; 14-26 year old males with pants down by the buttocks, males of black or middle eastern descent and anyone using profanities.
3) Walking or driving in areas of town that appear to be in state of decay.
4) Knowing what the local gang colors are and avoiding clothes that could be mistaken for gang affiliation (I stopped wearing my Navy Eisenhower jacket in Phoenix because of that due to a police officer stopping and telling me)
Reviewing FBI crime statistics periodically to see what each ethnic and gender group is doing. If a group that makes up 12% of a population is committing 49% of the violent crime in an area, then you can bet your bippy that I am going to look at that group a little more closely.
BTW-After the Oklahoma City bombing, I was racially profiled for several years and didn’t take it personally. Recently, I have been profiled again thanks to madame nepoltino due to race, gender, military affilation and religious views.

President Obama just went on the radio to say Derrion Albert acted stupidly by being a well adjusted young man and ignoring his heritage.
Well, it really wouldn’t surprise me. What a shame and a waste of a young person of true potential. The ones that did this are just trash.
What really breaks the heart are minorities claiming whites are racist when they speak out about this kind of thing. I don’t hate black people, in fact I would most likely find Derrion a pleasant young man. I hate thugs and criminals, regardless of skin color. And I do not abide excuses for such behavior. Personal responsibility needs to come back into vogue.

One cannot blame “whitey” for actions that blacks do to other blacks, both violence like this, but more importantly, beating kids trying to be successful.
This skews all that data showing lower performance among blacks as compared to other races. Success is defined a “acting white” rather than simply being successful, diligent and responsible.

I’ve talked a few times to senior black people, and read people like Walter Williams. All have said that 50 years ago, black neighborhoods were safer than white neighborhoods. They took care of their own. Then came Johnson and the liberals. Today, the same liberals blame everyone and everything but themselves. You can see today what the net result of the “Great Society” achieved…trillons of dollars wasted and war zones in our own cities, worse than Iraq.
I wonder where the AP death count is for kids being killed in cities across America?

Good points all. Society is to blame insofar as we have tolerated the welfare/entitlement state, allowing a whole segment of the population to just sit around. And it ain’t just blacks. I am here in Mohave County AZ (Kingman) and we have multi-generational welfare recipiants here as well….virtually all white.

Growing up in the Great City of Atlanta, I can tell you a couple of things about this incident:
1. No Cop in his right mind would have interfered. A Black Cop would be considered a pariah for the rest of his life and a White cop would have been on film doing his job – now, he’s a racist and would be prosecuted federally for Civil Rights violations until he was put in prison for many, many years.
2. All the training you have had in the world will not prepare you for an angry mob who know they have immunity intent on doing you harm. You must be prepared to defend yourself or run. In today’s world – Run if you can. You will never be considered as doing the right thing by defending yourself in this particular situation.
3. Blacks kill other Blacks and it’s the White Man’s fault – nothing new here.
4. Any of these guys could go out and get a job – if they wanted to. They don’t.
5. When these three kids go to prison, they will get out in 7 years and will be considered heroes for doing that time. The African American Community depends upon their men doing time in the white man’s jail in order to continue the excuses for their acceptance of the violent behavior behavior some black people exhibit.
6. The folks that shot the video could give a rat’s behind about the welfare of anyone in that crowd. They are happy as pigs in the proverbial because their film is now on the internet.
My rant is off but the only cure for this problem is the complete elimination of any government subsidies for anyone. Force people to work for a living. A man with a job doesn’t have enough free time to beat other people to death.
One last thing – Again, experience from Atlanta:
Chicago politicians want the Olympics. It means a boatload of cash for them. So, they will do whatever it takes to get the games. The International Olympic Committee knows this and they will extract millions in bribes and favors from the Chicago Elite – the same folks who made Blue Lips what he is today.
Just as the spotlight fades when the Chicago Games are over, there will be a slight mention of the “scandal” of bribery towards the IOC. The IOC will be “outraged” for about a week. The headlines fade and Obama’s cronies rake in the cash. O’Hare becomes “Obama-O’Hare International Airport” (If they even leave O’Hare’s name on it).
I have monitored the Chicago PD on a police scanner in the past. THESE FIGHTS HAPPEN EVERY SCHOOL DAY. The police cannot respond to back each other up fo 40 minutes at times. It is very scary and you can’t belive it is happening when you listen to it. God bless these police officers….I could not do their job.

Unfortunately, this type of criminal activity is found throughout our cities. Here in the Hampton Roads/Norfolk area, when the sun goes down, the guns come out. It’s not unusual to have 1-2 shootings every night. A grandson of mine, was pulled out of HS here, and sent to W. Va., to finish his schooling. The school here is terrible for him, and his potential…drugs, violence and lousy teaching. He’s gone from Cs and Ds to As and Bs, and could receive a college scholarship. This “do what makes you happy” philosophy has done nothing but create apathic communities interested only in “what’s in it for me?” Until we make people more responsible for their own actions, the beatings/shootings will continue. Driving around NE and SE Washington, D.C., in the 60s, was nothing for me. I used to visit friends and go out to eat there. Not today, though. I want a Bradley, if I really had to go. Why the major change? Liberal, “let me take care of you” government. No-one cares, because there isn’t any incentive to care. That’s the whole problem with socialism. Of course, we could slide down into communism, and force people to care, with a gun at their head.
Average Joe: There is NO place in our professional military for people who can’t or won’t control their emotions, who can’t or won’t take orders and who can’t or won’t discipline themselves.
For starters, these thugs wouldn’t last a minute in basic training as they would be a discipline nightmare and would serve to take every second of someone’s time as they complained about the food, their treatment, the harsh conditions and being yelled at by someone in authority.
They may seem like good soldiers because they will attack someone, but they are really cowards who will only attack the weak from a position of power. They think only of themselves and will do little for others, especially those they view as defenseless.
As a commander, you have to rely on your people to carry out their orders and complete the assigned mission. You have good, strong officers and NCO’s who lead the troops every day and all day through some tough situations.
