This is what the thuggish redistribution of wealth looks like

A.M. Mora y Leon tipped me to this video last night of Chavista thugs confiscating farms across Venezuela. A.M. notes the parallels to what Lenin, Mao and Castro did: “But this time, some farmer had the presence of mind to turn on his cellphone camera and film the thuggery as it happened. This makes it really different. Can you imagine what things would be like if Kulaks had had a cellphone camera? It’s incredible what dictators have gotten away with and might not with this clip:”
Fausta Wertz provides translation:
A group of red shirt-wearing Chavista thugs show up at a farm and seize the farm in the name of the government, under the pretext that the 103 hectare farm is “idle land” and that the law allows them to take it over for “food production.”
The farmer protests politely, explaining that he’s been raising cattle on his farm for 23 years. He is rebuffed by another guy, who says, “this is not going to be a debate; this is a public act approved by the Venezuelan people. I’m governor and I’m here to ensure public order. There won’t be a debate, I ask you to listen to the document, after which the public will take charge of the land.”
When the farmer’s wife protests, he tells her to discuss it in court.
Chavez controls the judiciary.
The farmer is told to sign the form, and then to gather the animals so they can be accounted for.
When another one of the people who lived at the farm tries to ask a question, the man who identified himself as the governor insists that “this is not a debate, this is not a meeting, and if there’s any disruption, the public force is here,” pointing to the crowd in red shirts.
The American Left refers to this as the “persuasion of power.”

I am utterly dismayed at what has happened to Venezuela. This is what happens when thugs like Chavez woo poor people to such an extent that they receive things not earned or achieved. It is really quite disgusting how the Chavistas now think they can boot this cattle farmer off his property.
This farmer wasn’t booted off his property because of the interests of the State. No, he lost his land because Chavista has stolen everything good about Venezuela from those whose blood, sweat, and tears helped the country. How much have the poor helped this country?
Just because you’re poor, doesn’t entitle you or your thug dictator to take stuff away to give to those who don’t deserve it. This is just like Zimbabwe with Mugabe kicking white farmers off their lands to give to unqualifed, inexperienced, itinerant black farmers who turned the land into dust. Zimbabwe is currently experiencing a food shortage.
On top of this, Chavez, Lula of Brazil, and Obummer have interfered so much in Honduras that it’s close to a civil war. Why does this part of the hemisphere, with our help, invest so much in leftist leaders who think tearing up their Constitution and taking away the rights of their people is right? Why are poor people getting more of a say than the rest of the South and Central American populations who work for a living to make their countries better?
South and Central Americans will always mystify me and what they’ll tolerate. I’ve met many educated people from that part of the world and even they are puzzled why their part of the world is prone to such dictatorships. It’s like their countries lack some common sense and aren’t interested in solving some of the big problems like poverty, education, and unemployment.
I’d like to ask these poor people one question: does having no rights suddenly make you feel better? Does having somebody else’s land, home, property wipe the slate clean for you? Is bowing to Chavez worth losing your freedom and your rights?
This is why I would never visit Brazil or the likes of South America. I know too well not only how weak its leadership is, and the abusive tactics they employ, and the even more weak people who follow them. This would serve as a lesson to Americans, if they were paying attention, including the poor, and weren’t so busy trying to take from the rest of us.

As did their daddy Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Castro and Mugabe of Zimbabwe. Obama’s friends will be able to take over some fine farmland in the central valley in California soon enough. These confiscations always cause deaths-millions in Russia and China but not to worry–there are always plenty of peasants.
In these earlier “famines” there was always the United States to pop up with some grain–those days seem to be ending–we do not wish to eat too much and offend Obama.

Not in all states. In some states, like Alabama, there is no property tax. Many in the South learned the hard way some important lessons from the Civil War such as if you don’t have the money to pay the property taxes, your property will be “confiscated.” This happened to a lot of the ante-bellum plantations in the South.
I’ve always thought it a great mistake to tax and continue to tax people to guilt them into paying for schools and services (like the cities in our country) that don’t work. As a former teacher, when I substitute taught I always felt incredibly uncomfortable that property taxes funded at least part of my meager paycheck. I wonder if teachers ever think about the property owner when they get paid?
I wish we could come up with a better system. If you don’t have kids in the public school system (either you home school, private school, or childess) and you own a home, you should be able to opt out. Then again, without property taxes, the public schools would go belly up and we can’t have that.
Your observation is why I’m reluctant to purchase a home. Many view homes as “investments” and like any “investment” it goes up and down. We now have a whole market that, after living on borrowed time, has been obliterated by that cycle. It should give anybody pause before purchasing a home. Where are your taxes are going…. and why.

AlohaGuy: I had a dealer here in CA last Dec. tell me $75 for a firearm transfer. Many of the dealers wont even touvh FFL transfers because it is such a hassle for them.

He makes a very important point about all taxes on wealth. If the government can tax it, they can seize it if you are temporarily unable to pay, and if the government wants to make you unable to pay, it can do that, too.
BTW, what is happening in Venezuela is exactly what the current President of the United States of America is trying to force on the Hondurans. He would force it on us, if he could get away with it.

In a very direct way, this is exactly why I am an American. My gradparents were farmers in eastern europe. When the Russians came in and took the land ‘for all of the people’, the farmers were displaced with nowhere to go. In their case, they came here.
How long will it be before the US will be accepting refugees from Venezuela?
And what will be Sean Penn’s reaction to the US even accepting such terrible people? Will Penn be condemning them to death for owning some land? Will Penn be demanding that those criminal land owners be returned to Chavez for appropriate re-education?

This is the reason we need the FairTax. Both Federal and State versions. All other taxes, fees, etc. would be repealed and only the FairTax would be collected on new items sold at the retail level only. This way, there is no property tax.
I understand the need for taxes. Police, Fire, road work, water, sewer, etc. But property and income taxes have outlived their usefulness. That’s assuming they ever were useful.
If you don’t think that can happen here, remember the Supreme Court ruling that allowed confiscation of private property for the “common good,” including giving it to a developer who will (hopefully) produce something that will generate larger tax revenues. Right, New London, CT? Or how about Jerry Jones getting the city of Arlington, TX, to “make room” for this new football palace? It looks more dramatic in Latin Amercia, but it’s already happening here. Even allegedly conservative Texas Gov. Rick Perry was in favor of creating an international corridor from Mexico through the state for truck traffic — at the expense of stealing millions of acre of private property “for the public good.” We’re further down the road to socialism than we imagine.

RTater, I do not consider my property taxes to be tribute. I do not have a problem with paying taxes that were passed leagally by my state. I do not pay the federal government property tax and niether does anyone else. This video shows the federal gov. taking away land. As a veteran I took an oath to this contry to defend the constitution against all threats foriegn and domestic. If the federal gov. ever comes to take my land or my freedom they will be met with as much resistance as I can give before I am gone. That was the message that I was trying to send with a shorter post. I hope this clears it all up for you.

Actually, I think the opposite is true. We have seized the initiative. We have had to “defend” since 2006. I think the August town meetings and the ACORN tapes have reversed that. We are on the attack.

In the above video, it seems to me as though there is more than one camera recording this action. It almost seems like the Chavista thugs want this scene to be spread around as a message to other farmers to get in line. What sand they have to be proud of what they are doing.

Why not? Would the consequences be any worse than what we have right now??
I had a conversation with a friend who teaches at a local high school. He told me that the teachers were getting a lot of pressure from district administrators not to fail students. In addition, they were instructed that homework assignments could not comprise than 10% of the grade in the class, because a number of students were flunking because they weren’t doing any homework.
I am sooooo glad that my youngest child will be out of high school in a couple of years.
Sorry for being off topic. But in a way, property taxes are just as much a seizure of property as what the Chavistas are doing.
It’s already here, and it’s more peaceful than it should be. We already allow them to take cash and other property from our fellow citizens under much the same protocols.
We’re consistently receiving messages that people wearing uniforms, carrying badges and guns are here only to protect us. (Which isn’t true – they protect the state.) The gleeful celebration of the strength of the state displayed recently in Pittsburgh serves as a prime example that the brainwashing works.
And on the rare occasions when one of us does get a wild hair and stands up to tyranny, the media usually takes the side of Law Enforcement, or doesn’t report the story at all. They’re never allowed to achieve hero status.
The camera is our best weapon.
Whats the problem here? This guy and his family will now get free food and housing from the Government since they just lost thier land and their livelihood.

I had the pleasure of spending several weeks in Venezuela in the months before Chavez managed to get into power. It was a country with beautiful women, a vibrant night life, with a real democracy. There was really no antiSemitism then and Israeli tourists were everywhere having a great time. Chavez is an antiSemite and does not try to hide it. Whether it is genuine or just a payoff to Khameni is unclear but really irrelevant. Chavez seized Jewish businesses and closed radio stations where any Jews had an ownership interest. He closed the Israeli embassy and joined fellow antiSemite Danny Ortega (Chris Dodd’s BFF) in demonizing Israel and Jews. Yet this is never mentioned on CNN or the NY Times. Nor does anyone ever ask celebrity sycophants of Chavez such as Danny Glover or Sean Penn to defend the antisemtism of their friend Hugo. The left wing in the US has become openly antiSemitic so it is no surprise that they love antiSemite Chavez so much. The NY Times has spiked the whole story of Chavez’s antisemitism.

Some of the older farmers had fought with General Francisco (“Pancho”) Villa in the 1910 Revolution. When the war was over they didn’t turn in their Mauser Rifles–they claimed they had been “lost in combat”. The rifles and ammunition had been buried on their ranches.

A few days after the land grab the ex soldiers got into position near the roadblock before first light. When the sun came up and the “special police” showed up in their truck they shot the hell out of them. Two dead, and two wounded ran away in their shot up pickup. Then the farmers tore down the roadblock and took back their land. The ex soldiers protected the land for the next few years.

Simon Bolivar is buried in Venezuela. He must be rolling over in his grave. I hope the Venezuelan Military and people can use the same approach on Hugo Chavez and can take back their country.

Great story. Exactly why the 2nd Amendment is crucial to our survival. I fear the day is coming for us to have to take our country back or die trying.
In America they call it “eminent domain”, as ratified by the Supreme Court Nitwits in the Kelo case in 2005. The only difference is some measley compensation to the poor sap who owns the land. Of course, this makes liberals smile.
Venezuela Attempts Gun Control by Limiting Bullets

CARACAS – Legislators at the National Assembly are set to take what appears to be a rather unorthodox approach to law and order in a society notoriously renowned for gunslinging and one of the highest per capita murder rates on the planet.
The defense committee at the legislature has been looking at a proposed reform of the 70-year-old Arms and Explosive Law, which apparently has yet to be brought into line with the Bolivarian Constitution adopted by referendum at President Hugo Chávez’s behest in late 1999.
The head of the committee, Deputy Juan Mendoza, said work was “90 percent” complete. Among the proposals is one particularly eye-catching item.
This envisages what Mendoza called a “specific prohibition under which any person cannot buy more than 50 bullets a year.” Mendoza, a middle-ranking member of Chávez’s governing United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), said the proposal represented “a form of reducing the parameters when it comes to the use of firearms and ammunition.”

It always amazes me that dictators like Chavez can keep the military loyal to their regime. Soldiers are just sons and daughters of the people. What does it take for a dictator to keep them loyal to communism?
The threat of a great deal of harm coming to their families, not so different than if the government comes to your house to confiscate something here, if you fight, you and your family will lose all that they have, one way or another the government will be harsh for having the courage to stand up against authority no matter how wrong authority is.
