The slavery question was the vexed one which troubled the relations of the army and the people in all the border States. My own position was that of the party which had elected Mr. Lincoln. No matter what your personal opinions may be, the facts remain evident that slavery was not ended in the North (who was ostensibly fighting a war “only” or “primarily” to end slavery?) until nearly two full years had elapsed since the final and finally legal emancipation of the slaves in the South and was not fully ended until finally, in January of 1865, a constitutional amendment was passed making the abolishment of slavery complete … in the North where it had continued unabated throughout the war years.
