Gag: Obama credited with making interracial marriage acceptable
Oh, spare me. Please:
There’s nothing more traditional in American politics than the wholesome family portrait: a beaming candidate, beaming spouse, reluctantly beaming teenagers.
But when Bill de Blasio, a candidate for public office in New York City this fall, put his family in his campaign mailings and TV ads, there was nothing routine about it. De Blasio’s wife of 15 years, Chirlane McCray, is black, his children are of mixed race and, even in one of America’s most liberal cities, no one could remember anything like it…
…With Barack Obama having rewritten the history of race relations in this country, de Blasio may be demolishing one of its last taboos, “For so long in American history, interracial couples went out of their way to keep their relationships out of the public eye that it’s remarkable to see them used in a campaign like this,” said Peggy Pascoe, a historian of interracial marriage at the University of Oregon, who referred to the campaign as “a post-Obama phenomenon.”
That’s a perception McCray said she shared. Obama, she said, “opened a door” and “made it easier for us to go there.”
Nowhere in the article is there even a mention of who over the last decades has made it difficult to “go there.”
No mention of how minority conservative women who marry outside their race are routinely attacked by liberals as traitors, sellouts, whores, ethnic trophy wives, and mail-order brides.
No mention of how Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas was excoriated by black liberals for being married to wife Virginia, who happens to be white.
No mention of how anti-government racial preference activist Ward Connerly was also attacked for marrying a white woman.

“It may sound bigoted; well, this is a bigoted world and why can’t black people be allowed a little Archie Bunker mentality?” Reynolds said later. “Here’s a man who’s going to decide crucial issues for the country and he has already said no to blacks; he has already said if he can’t paint himself white he’ll think white and marry a white woman.”
Clarence Thomas advocates a colorblind society, and his marriage may well be an example of that philosophy. But others see a different symbolism.
“His marrying a white woman is a sign of his rejection of the black community,” said Russell Adams, chairman of Howard University’s department of Afro-American studies. “Great justices have had community roots that served as a basis for understanding the Constitution. Clarence’s lack of a sense of community makes his nomination troubling.”
And now, liberals want to give Barack Obama credit for breaking interracial marriage taboos?
What has Obama ever done — what has he ever said — to disavow the bigoted attacks by liberals against minority conservatives in public life who have endured vicious bile because they chose their partners based on the content of their character and not the color of their skin?
Nothing.

Just another example of how the same people who superstitiously blamed George Bush for everything “bad” from Hurricane Katrina to the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake will flip the coin to superstitiously credit Hope-a-Dope for everything “good” — with no regard for even indirect, not to mention proximate causation.
There was a scene in a movie about the life of Rudolph Valentino in which a throng of his most deranged female fans were gathered in front of a hotel where he was staying, and in unison exclaiming things like “YOU are the Power of Religion!”
Similarly, Hope-a-Dope’s groupies have found their religion, complete with its own God and Satan. After that, everything to the True Believer is a matter of pure Faith.

Perhaps a conservative author might put together a book solely on documented democrat hypocrisy. Some cons authors have devoted parts of books to this topic, Ann Coulter for instance. In my case I have been going out in public with my South American Indian wife for several years now without problems. It is truly a mark of Obama’s greatness that he made this possible before he was even well known.

20 years ago I married a wonderful women who legally immigrated from the Philippines 25 years ago.
My all white family welcomed her with all the warmth and love that any new member to family deserves. Her race and ethnicity was and never has been an issue.
Michelle you are another example of interacial success without making a big deal about.
Why is it only liberal dummycrats take credit for what so many others have quietly done before this crowd was even out of shcool.

Both my sister and my cousin married black men long before Obama even thought about running for office.
I’ve also had co-workers with Chinese or Philipino spouses. No one I know thinks twice about interracial marriage and hasn’t for probably 25 or 30 years.
The acceptance of interracial marriage has absolutely nothing to do with Obama.

I recall 12 years ago overhearing some astute black women congratulate my wife because she “got it goin’ on” for a black girl like her marrying a white guy like me. My wife is Bolivian and could barely speak English at the time. Thank you, President Obama, for opening the doors of interracial bliss for me.
Never had that issue; my wife may walk ahead of me — or more often all over me — but never behind me.

In my own family, every single one of my generation either married into a different ethnic group or into a different religion. Thanksgiving was a grand affair and we finally had to put someone in charge of a defined/controlled menu, not potluck!
Really? My sisters insisted on putting my wife through a 10-year hazing period. By the time they were willing to talk to her, she wasn’t interested–and neither was I. But in their defense, my wife is a sweet, honest, loving person, so you can see why my sisters reacted the way they did. Wait a minute!!! That didn’t have anything to do with race. That’s impossible. Whites are only nasty to minorities. Hmmmm, how about that! My wife is a minority and I never knew it.
I’m confused as to how someone who is NOT in an interracial marriage is able to make it ok for those who are.
Do media people actually think about what they write, or is it all stream-of-consciousness?
And these same people wonder why my wife would rather remain living under the oppressive freedom, affordable health care and ability to be self-sustaining that we enjoy here in the Philippines.

Funny, my wifes first marriage was interracial. Her daughter from that marriage lives with us. I didn’t need the appeaser in chief to come along before I accepted my step-daughter as my little girl.

Regulus, I wish her well and a safe return home. My wife has had problems with immigration for quite awhile now. It’s been quite a hassle. One problem after another. She was very traditional in culture, when I first met her. She, too, is also a conservative and very interested in American history.
This story says more about the author than it does about Pres Obama. In fact it has nothing to do with Pres Obama, and is more a reflection of the author’s experience and lack of research.

As the product of a mixed marriage, I was the scorn for hatred for all Americans until BHO led the way out of darkness.
As a minority, I was constantly feeling victimized until now. I no longer have to fear my own shadow.

I hear you about the immigration hassles; my wife and I were married in Indonesia, it took almost a year before we finally cleared all the flaming hoops that stood between her and getting her here… it got to the point where I was almost ready to tell her to just fly to Mexico on a tourist visa, then sneak across the border and I’d meet her there.
I think it is absolutely hysterical that The Ego is touted as a Black man when his lineage is actually more white than black. Sure, he has the facial features, coloring and hair characteristic of a black man, but the fact remains he is more white than he is black.
Move back here with me. Some exciting things going on and may be some really good opportunities here for enterprising couples! Besides, sad as it may be, I never got the privilege of hiding in the closet or living behind walls here so I cannot claim victim status back there anyhow.

No, it’s true! If Barack had not set the example in 1992 I would probably never have entered into a mixed-race marriage two years earlier in 1990.
Fortunately, I could look forward to his example and draw inspiration sort of in the same way the Nobel Peace Prize Committee gazed into the future and became inspired enough to give him the Peace Prize.

Affirmitive Action is FAR MORE racist than the ban on inter-racial marriage ever was.
Though the ban on inter-racial marriage was indeed racist, it was nonetheless oppressive on an equal opportunity basis, (a true-to-form ‘seperate but equal’ law).
Notice that for any marriage so denied under that law that:
1. The denial was NOT denied on the basis of what either of the two particular races were per se – only that the race of each was determined to be not the same.
2. The denial oppressed BOTH of the races involved equally. Given a white and black couple denied for example, neither one of them could claim being ‘more oppressed’ than the other. The law had no bias against any one particular race at all, it discriminated against ALL of them!
Good editors are few and far between.
Wow, I thought I only needed the OK from the Marine Corps, the Japanese government and the Catholic Church. Nobody told me I had to ask Obama.

Interracial marriages were illegal in Virginia until the US Supreme Court overturned the state miscegenation law in 1967 in Loving v. Virginia.
I guess someone will not tell us Obama was responsible for that too.
So prior to 1968, “Virginia was for Lovers” but not Loving!
