Is your teacher lobbying for Obamacare at school today?

By Michelle Malkin  •  October 20, 2009 01:17 PM

A tipster e-mails: “Keep up the good work. Thought you’d like to see what Maryland teachers are being sent today (during school hours, school e-mail).”

Dear XXXXXXX [redacted]

We’ve waited long enough.

Right now, everyone is paying for the cost of our broken health care system. People with “pre-existing conditions” are being denied coverage by insurers. Women are being charged 30-51% more than men for the same health insurance policies. Newborn babies are being denied coverage because they’re “too fat” or “too small.” And a jaw-dropping 44,000 people a year are dying because they lack health insurance. How much longer will Americans need to wait before Congress acts?

Image removed by sender. Call Congress Oct 20th

Today, we’re sending our message loud and clear – that it’s time to deliver on health care. Call 1-800-603-SEIU and use this form to report back on your call.

Local 500 members are joining with voters across the country in calling Congress today, October 20th. Our union has a vibrant presence in Washington, and we’ve been hard at work lobbying for this legislation, but we’re powerless without the participation of our membership. We’ve set a goal of making 3,000 calls from members online, but we need your help to get there. Make three calls (two Senators, one Representative), and tell your members of Congress you expect reform that:

* Ends insurance company abuse;
* Makes health care affordable for everyone;
* Includes a strong public health insurance option;
* Requires employers to pay their fair share;
* Does not contain taxes or more costs to working families who are already paying more than their fair share into the system.

I hope you’ll call each of your members of Congress today at 1-800-603-SEIU and share this email with other SEIU members. We can’t let insurance companies dictate what happens in Congress, because when they win, we lose.

Respectfully,

Merle Cuttitta
President
SEIU Local 500

P.S. When you call, let the Congressional staffer know you’re an SEIU member. Let’s show our presence on these calls today, then report back on how it went.

    So we have public employees, paid by the taxpayer, being solicited on the taxpayer dime to sway the outcome of legislation. Meanwhile, the Administration tries to gag the insurance companies from informing their customers of the costs of health reform. Funny, that gag order was rescinded a few days ago, I wonder why?

    Take your kids out of public “education.” End state-sponsored socialist indoctrination of our kids! You HAVE the power!

    Funny that they think that our cackle of congress critters really gives a tinker’s damn at all about what any of we the people really think to begin with.

    Lobbyist dollars (maybe including those from the unions) have already made up the minds of those in our bloated bureaucracy and there is nothing that we the people are going to do to sway them one way or the other.

    It’s interesting that it asks ‘employers pay their fair share’ when they are paying everything now.

    Teachers get their benefits through tax dollars anyway, why do they get a voice in the debate?

    Not sure about that first one, but I’m pretty sure that both of the above would get taken care of with increased competition. I’m pretty sure if we were allowed to buy health insurance the way we buy car or homeowner’s insurance it would cost a lot less.

    Nice stat, let’s see the data. Here’s some right back at you SEIU (From cpiu.us):

    The Statistics of Teacher sexual abuse to Students
    The best estimate is that 15% of students will be sexually abused by a member of the school staff during their school career.
    Though, when the American Association of University Women Foundation surveyed more than 1,600 students in eighth through 11th grade, 25 percent of the girls and 10 percent of the boys who said they had been harassed or abused said the harasser was a school employee.
    The number of K-12 public and private school students in 1996 who have been or will be sexually abused by a member of the school staff is nearly 7 million of 51,331,000.
    Between 1% and 5% of teachers sexually abuse or harass students.
    At least a quarter of all school districts in the United States have dealt with a case of staff sexual abuse in the past ten years.
    Most cases of sexual abuse of students by teachers are never reported.
    In nearly half of the cases, suspects were accused of abusing more than one student.
    Only two cases were cases of false accusations; less than 1 percent of the cases studied.
    No type of school was immune to abuse: public or private, religious or secular, rich or poor, urban or rural.
    Responses to Allegations of Sexual Abuse of Students by Staff
    38.7% of the teachers resigned, left the district, or retired
    17.5% were spoken to informally
    15% were terminated or not re-hired
    11.3% received a formal verbal or written reprimand
    8.1% were suspended and then resumed teaching
    7.5% were cases where the superintendent determined that the teacher hadn’t meant to sexually abuse
    Of the nearly 54% of abusers who resigned, weren’t rehired, retired, or were terminated, superintendents reported that 16% were teaching in other schools and that they didn’t know what had happened to the other 84%. All but 1% of these teachers retained their teaching license.

    Clean your own house before you complain about other peoples garbage.

    Good question, Ron. Does anyone know the answer?

    Another thing that caught my eye in that e-mail is this:

    …Newborn babies are being denied coverage because they’re “too fat” or “too small.”

    How about the “newborn babies” who are denied the most basic health care simply because they managed to survive an abortion? Anyone think that Merle Cuttitta cares about them?

    We all know what SEIU’s man in the white house thinks about their audacity of survival. /sarc.

    Sending emails is easy — our email addys at school are public information, posted on school and district websites.

    If the email is coming from outside the district, no law is being violated. If it is being sent form within the district, it may be illegal — though the question is whether or not it really constitutes partisan activity or is simply a personal email between colleagues (which is permitted in most districts).
