Amherst MA: Please give us Gitmo detainees!

By Michelle Malkin  •  October 21, 2009 10:44 AM

Aren’t you glad you don’t live in Amherst MA?

Amherst leaders are backing a resolution offering the Massachusetts college town as a possible resettlement home for two Guantanamo detainees if they are released from the military prison.

The board voted 2-1 yesterday to endorse a warrant article filed on behalf of the two men by the group Pioneer Valley No More Guantanamos. The resolution would require approval from town meeting. It also calls on Congress to lift a ban on relocating former Guantanamo prisoners — even those cleared of wrongdoing — from resettling in the U.S.

Related: Sen. James Inhofe wants answers on recent Obama administration changes to regulations on reporters at Gitmo…

It appears that the administration has changed its media policy towards Gitmo in a way that prohibits members of the press visiting Gitmo from reporting on both the military commission hearings and the detention facility on the same trip. Instead, reporters are forced to take separate trips when covering the two venues. With no word from the administration clarifying whom this policy change came from and the reason for the change, I sent a letter to President Obama requesting answers.

In my letter, I explain that restricting journalists from reporting on both the military commission hearings at Gitmo and the detention facility at Gitmo will directly impact worldwide press access and ultimately result in less transparency. News organizations are cutting costs at every available opportunity therefore this new policy requiring journalists to take separate trips when reporting on both venues at Gitmo will likely result in less media coverage. For an Administration that has promised to be the most transparent, I believe there needs to be clarification regarding the policy change, why it has changed, and who authorized the change.

Not to mention it will destroy our image in the world. At least I think that’s what the argument was the last 8 years regarding GITMO.

In trying to save their own doomed economy, Amherst, Massachusetts seeks to bring the Gitmo detainees to their own town.

I guess they aren’t all that interested in keeping enrollment up at UMASS …

Three people in Amherst, MA have stepped into the breach, well actually two. Yes, it is merely a first step and leads to a town meeting. That ought to be an interesting gathering.

If these detainees are found not guilty, then return them from whence they came. There is no need to resettle them to the US.

BTW, this is as useful and practicle as the town down the road from me, Takoma Park, MD, where the residents voted it a nuclear free zone. It is just a feel good measure that has no weight, and lacks teeth. The nuclear ban is impractcle and a tad bit silly. No nuclear power plant will be built in such a densely populated area in the first place. But, they will accept the power from the Calvert Cliffs, MD nuclear power plant.

I think it would be fitting to use that 20 mil that Kerry snuck into the Defense Bill to fund an Abu Grahib II prison in honor of Ted Kennedy. That was one of his last patriotic rallying crys during the reconstruction period in Iraq. It would be better spent than on a library remembering Kennedy’s sordid life.

It would be nice if liberal Massachusetts had to foot the bill for all the lawyers, hearings, appeals, ACLU obstacles, etc that it is going to cost the taxpayer only to result in the release of the GITMO prisoners due to a technicality.

Yeah – load up the Conestoga and head West. Just avoid the likes of Detroit (hostile terriority) and Chicago (most corrupt city east of the Mississippi). Stop somewhere in Kansas or Nebraska. It might still be safe there. :)
