The Chicago way: “Why are we having a fire sale on everything in the city?”

By Michelle Malkin  •  October 26, 2009 12:55 PM

Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley, desperate for cash to prop up his bankrupt and broken city, will lease anything. Parking meters. Airports. Now, water.

A constituent asks: “Why are we having a fire sale on everything in the city?”

Because everything’s for sale in the city…

If the parking meter deal put a bad taste in your mouth, try swallowing this: Chicago is considering leasing its water system to help fix the budget.

The new boss could charge whatever they want for water, CBS 2’s Roseanne Tellez reports…

…A trade publication says the city’s Department of Water Management is “considering a lease of its water and wastewater system.”

Alderman Scott Waguespack has heard similar rumblings.

“We’ve already heard inklings that they’re thinking about it,” he said. “They’ve had discussions. Why is the public not at the table?”

Waguespack was one of the few holdouts on the City Council when the parking meter deal went through. Under that controversial plan, the cash-strapped city agreed to lease its parking spaces for 75 years to a private firm that would collect higher parking rates. It netted the city more than $1 billion in cash.

“Why are we having a fire sale on everything in the city?” Waguespack said.

…CBS 2 made repeated calls to Illinois-American Water, with no luck. Mayor Daley didn’t want to talk, either…

Too many elected official have spent the taxes they collected as if there were no end to the funds. None of these people can think in terms of a budget because any short fall called for increasing the taxes on something. Actually cutting pork out the budget means lost votes in the next election. This recession has become a huge reality check for all levels of government. None of the elected officials ever consider how hard the public works to earn the money in the first place. The high and mighty gov projects just feed the intervention creates the need for more intervention cycle. And the public needs to stop electing stupid people to spend our money.

I would imagine that spending less in hard times is out of the question. All too many people, companies and governments, cut when times are hard: cut when times are good as there is more money to save. I do believe we call that living below your means. But that is out of the question I suppose.

Now if we could sell the whole damn chum bucket city to Iran-people included-we might get somewhere. Valeri Jarrett in a burqa anyone?

    Calling Mrs. O’Leary-Chicago needs you.

This is exactly what happened in Argentina – the government sold government assets for pennies on the dollar. However, the Argentinian government had previously nationalized all of the important private industries. Watch for this tactic at the Federal level. Politicians can make billions of dollars from this tactic, then basically disappear to their own private island, leaving the citizens of the country in an unstable, hyper-inflation, failing economy.

I have no sympathy for Chicago. They’ve been voting in corrupt politicians for decades. They have a dumbed-down voter base there, that would vote for Stalin or Pol Pot, if he was democrat. Heck, Idi Amin would win there, if Daley was out.

They leased their parking spaces for 75 years? I thought “Obama and Friends” were going to get rid of cars well before 75 years!

Did someone just get taken in Chicago? This sounds a lot like getting a 75 year lease on the livery stables in New York City in 1915 or buying the Brooklyn Bridge…

I think this is more of a stab in the dark for Daley than you think. Losing the Olympics was major egg on his face. I don’t feel he has the pull prior to losing the Games. Also, there are two other issues involved. First,Chicago provides the water for much of the suburbs, who may have a say in this matter. Secondly, Gov. Quinn, who is quite populist, is pro-utility regulation.

Just so you know, not everyone in Chicago are liberal-democrats. Some of us even love Michelle Malkin and Fox News! It’s the tools in the city that keep voting in a self destructive way. (That probably includes the dead and fictional characters.) Vote early, vote often. Daley’s had too much power for too long – we need term limits for our mayor. We’re just waiting for Crook (Cook) county president, Todd Stroger to get on Michelle’s radar…

Well, I think it’s a splendid idea that they’re starting to privatize things that should be under the government’s control in the first place. And if they sell these “assets” off, maybe they won’t try to collect their trillions in debt from my income.
