Harrycare in trouble: Dems bail, Lieberman supports filibuster

FNC’s Major Garrett tweets that Democrat Sen. Evan Bayh is “uncommitted” on Harry Reid’s “public option” plan announced yesterday.
Politico’s Manju Ranu reports that Joe Lieberman supports a GOP filibuster:
Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) said Tuesday that he’d back a GOP filibuster of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s health care reform bill.
Lieberman, who caucuses with Democrats and is positioning himself as a fiscal hawk on the issue, said he opposes any health care bill that includes a government-run insurance program — even if it includes a provision allowing states to opt out of the program, as Reid’s has said the Senate bill will.
“We’re trying to do too much at once,” Lieberman said. “To put this government-created insurance company on top of everything else is just asking for trouble for the taxpayers, for the premium payers and for the national debt. I don’t think we need it now.”
Lieberman added that he’d vote against a public option plan “even with an opt-out because it still creates a whole new government entitlement program for which taxpayers will be on the line.”
His comments confirmed that Reid is short of the 60 votes needed to advance the bill out of the Senate, even after Reid included the opt-out provision. Several other moderate Democrats expressed skepticism at the proposal as well, but most of the wavering Democratic senators did not go as far as Lieberman Tuesday, saying they were waiting to see the details.
Who will Reid blame now?

Michelle Malkin!
Please, please, please, do not pass this bill dc! I don’t care how they try to spin this crud bill, it stinks big time.
L
Hey Harry, this war is lost – as is your prospect for re-election. Surrender and go home now. Thank you.
There WILL be a healthcare bill on the president’s desk before the August recess. Book it.
seems that some of the less foaming at the mouth libs have their finger in the air and are noticing a very chill breeze blowing out there.
You knew this was coming when Harry went to the microphone yesterday.
“Life is tough; it’s tougher when you’re stupid.” John Wayne
Could it be that there is actually one liberal who has a conscience? Of course Liberman isn’t actually a Democrat, is he?
It’s time for Harry to read the writing on the wall. His bill is toast, as is his career in the Senate.
So long you diaper wearing liar.
While Reid is looking for someone to BLAME, the rest of us will be looking for someone to THANK!
Maybe they meant the bill for Malia’s braces. Vetoed. Don’t sweat it Barry, we’ll pay it.
Independent, and McCain’s bestest buddy in the Senate. Which is why this isn’t really a big deal.
This is why the progressives tried desperately to take Lieberman’s seat away from him. He’s as annoying to them as the likes of Snowe, Graham and McCain are to us.
The difference being I don’t see comments from Republicans singing the praises of Lieberman’s common sense, but the Dems constantly point to our weakest links as “reasonable.”
Apparently Newt believes them.
Yes, but the closer to the elections, the better. Especially if the unemployment rate continues to rise.
The number one thing on all these politician’s minds is staying in office, period. It may be too late for Reid, but the others may be starting to wise-up.
Being “uncommitted” on the bill does not mean you will vote against cloture, which is the real issue.
Lieberman on the other hand…well, I guess we’ll see how much he wants to hold onto that sweet sweet Homeland Security Committee chair. Because if he votes against cloture I’ll guarantee its gone.
come on folks, its not a “public option” or “government run healthcare”. Its a “competitive option”. Yeah, thats the ticket, its a competitive option. Got it.
The public option is a poison pill for the dems. If they vote it in, “We the People” will have to ensure the next administration will repeal it.
He’s a good example of someone whose party turned on him, then ran successfully as an independent. He may still caucus w/Dems, but he’s not beholden to the D party line in order to keep his seat, and he knows it. Must be a liberating feeling for a pol to live (and succeed) by his principles.
The Evil Salamander sure looks unhappy right now.
That light at the end of the tunnel may not be a rectal scope after all…
Actually, I think it is now the “competitive healthcare exchange with opt out option and future trigger” option
Can’t have a sweet sweet committee chair without a sweet sweet chair in the Senate.
Can’t you just picture Rahm dressed in a tux walking around the conference table with a ball bat and Harry sitting there nervously facing forward?
Lieberman’s dead in the water in 2012 in any case. The only question is how he wants the next 3 years to play out.
Without doubt this “Bill” has the potential to do the more harm to our country than any in my lifetime.
Passing a government option general health plan will dwarf all other entitlement programs and will send us back into the dark ages of medicine.
Private insurance companies will fall like dominoes and when we are all on the government plan there will be rationing of care and medicines.
Thank you Joe Lieberman!
A lot can happen in 3 years, conservatism is on the uptick. Ohio is a big swing state. The New York special election has the politicians nervous. I would not count Liebermann out if he moves to the right and commits to it.
Good for Lieberman. He’s right. Most senators are more deliberative than manipulative (Reid, Dodd, and Schumer notwithstanding).
Most senators recognize that the problem is Medicare spending on claims. If you look at the system, you realize that another Medicare supported by taxpayers would cripple the economy due to government liabilities.
I’ve been saying it, but the debate has been about health insurance premiums and not the cost of health care. Medicare costs have gone up. Medicare premiums have gone up just like the private sector. It’s not the ‘profit of insurance’ that is the problem. . . it is the size of the claims, and who has to pay them that is the problem.
So what will the Dems do differently this time? He already handed them their hineys once.
Agreed. Good point.
Chap, why do you say that? I would think recent events and swings in polls would actually benefit Joe?
Ohio the home of lots of insurers, so keep that homeland security chair or risk the support he gets from insurance companies, hmmm. He has already ticked off the Dems once, I’d take the corporate backing. Way to pull one out joe. Keep the heat on now, don’t waiver.
My post looked a lot like what I read over at Green Room, sorry to not be original, got a headache today and a little bit of a sore throat, so not paying enough attention to myself. Hope I don’t have the pork thing.
Yes, but unfortunately it’s hard to underestimate the GOP capacity to screw up. I agree with Rush. No third parties; Conservatives need to take back the Republican Party and reestablish first principles.
You’re absolutely right. The biggest obstacle to effective reform is time. The health care system didn’t start to consume a disproportionate amount of our income until the government messed it up with Medicare and WWII wage caps.
It took 60 years for the inevitable and predictable effects to appear, but nobody is willing to wait even 2 years for the pendulum to swing the other way via any free market reforms that might actually work.
We’re entitled to everything in America, and we’re entitled to it instantly.
I totally see the point Dexter, but we are fighting a huge well funded org. I think the point of action is so needed that I don’t see anything wrong with backing conservative independents like what is happening in New York. I would like to take the GOP back, but GOP leadership are a bunch of traitors.
He will blame Tinkerbell for choosing to be the UN Spokesfairy for GW instead of his Spokesfairy for healthcare.
Well, for one, they are probably going to run the very popular AG, Richard Blumenthal, against him. I know its early, but polls have showed him crushing Lieberman in a head to head. Plus, Republicans ran a VERY weak candidate in 2006, which is the primary reason Lieberman was able to win. I don’t think he will be so lucky again.
“Who will Reid blame now?”
Bush and the “right wing”. Same as always.
Lieberman IF the only voice of opposition could be dealt with. For all intentional purposes he is a democrat. He is not the only democrat to not support the public option.
Reid floated the public option so that it could be shot down so that he could then say to the left of his party, “Hey, I tried. It wasn’t my fault.” Plausible deniability is all this was. Nothing more, nothing less.
Oh, I wholeheartedly agree!
Concur. What I hope and pray is for Doug Hoffman’s trouncing of the Democrat and the Democrat-in-GOP-clothing, and other similar events, to awaken Rep leadership.
Which means, Gingrich will endorse him as a Republican candidate for an open seat, because he’s got about 10% conservative blood (but will continue to caucus with democrats). Yep…perfect fit.
I am pessimistic that the Republican brand will be awakened by Hoffmann’s showing, but one can hope. I do believe this election probably and should have everyone in Washington nervous. The independents have woken up and are not happy with the way things are going.
Instead of Harrycare, I think harikari would be more appropriate.
Chap, Don’t be so sure that Joe Lieberman is a dead duck in 2012 in Connecticut. Remember that he will get to run against a joke named Ned Lamont. Yes, Lamont won the Dem. primary in 2006 but Lamont got whomped in the general election. Lamont is such a joke that on his primary night victory speech, Lamont had Al Sharpton on one side of him and Jesse Jackson on the other side. Lamont was effectively finished at that point. Everyone knew he was a pushover. Lamont is married to a woman who makes millions in investment banking and Ned is her hobby. She lets her less wealthy hubby spend millions of her money on the campaign. A few years ago, they sent out a Christmas card to their friends and supporters. The photo showed the dynamic duo surrounded by their hoursehold staff with the household staff wearing nice uniforms. Believe me. Lamont can’t relate to people in Connecticut outside Round Hill Road in Greenwich. If you wanted to see something absolutely hilarious, you should have seen Ned Lamont try to get down and jiggy with the folks in the North end of Hartford back in 2006.
Thank you, Joe Lieberman!

To Nancy Pelosi, You may call it recycled hay, but it’s still horse sh!t.
I wonder what kind of job B.O. will give Dingy Harry when he gets voted out of office next year? (Maybe Dingy will just go tap that Swiss bank account and retire to the beaches?)
Looks like Dobby the house elve swallowed a bug.
Finally a Sen. form my state standing up for something. We must keep the pressure on them to kill this thing. I would rather keep it the same over the Dem plan.
Let me know when you have a bill that induces tort reform amongst many other things.
marc,
I will bet dollars to donuts Lamont will not be the Dem candidate.
Update – I just heard it from Rush – HT to Redstate: Leaked Internal House Leadership Whip Count Shows 47 Dems at No, 8 Leaning No and 12 Undecided
At last! The vast right-wing conspiracy’s ‘democrat representative voodoo doll campaign’ is beginning to yield positive results.
Well, sometimes you just gotta do the right thing.
