Nanny state debacle in NYC schools
Big Nanny knows best. Parental permission be damned:
“I was outraged,” Naomi Troy, 26, told the Daily News after her 6-year-old daughter, Nikiyah Torres-Pierre, had a possible allergic reaction to the shot.
Officials at Public School 335 in Crown Heights called an ambulance to take Nikiyah to SUNY Downstate Medical Center when she fell ill following the arm jab.
“My stomach was hurting, and I was itching,” Nikiyah said after she was released from the hospital.
The snafu and a similar mixup at a Staten Island school came in the first days of the city’s in-school H1N1 vaccination program.
Looks like the jabbers tried to cover their tracks:
When the nurse called for a student Thursday morning, Nikiyah’s teacher misunderstood and sent the wrong student, Troy said.
The error was compounded when the nurse didn’t check Nikiyah’s name before sticking her in the shoulder, the mother said.
“The school made a horrible mistake,” she added. “They never asked for her name. They have no paperwork….How do you make a mistake like this?”
After the mistake was discovered, officials summoned Troy to the school, she said.
Troy said the nurse – a Department of Health employee – tried to get her to sign a consent form, after the fact.
“I was insulted. I was really angry. ‘You just incriminated yourself even more,’” Troy recalled thinking.
“If they’d taken proper precautions in the school this never would have happened.”

The Progressives consider your children property of the State. I am not surprised.
Bound to happen.
Yeah, that’s who I want managing my country’s healthcare.
A definite violation of protocol, and the nurse should be released.
I am not against vaccinations per se but this 1930s statist approach towards intimidating people into suspect treatments is wrong. The carelessness of the “injector” proves how callous these people are. Sorry but this is not Stalin’s USSR just yet.
Gov’t employees screwing something up with possibly tragic consequences?
Surely you jest!
/
Errah, its just immunization practice. You’ll get the same treatment at new conservative internment camps. Now serving number 209182367745, next!
Maybe this is why vaccines should come from health care providers and not from the school system.
It’s shocking to me that the government has screwed up distribution of the H1N1 vaccine and they want to take over health care…right…
If any of these children who got this shot had died because of an allergy to eggs, I would hope the parents sue the daylights out of the school system.
L
This is disgusting. They will probably get the teacher and the vp to go along with the spin.
They’ll probably punish this poor kid for leaving the classroom without permission.
So, what? Just chalk this up to “Hey, stuff happens.”? There are so many things wrong with this, I don’t have the time to list them all. Let me just point out three.
1) “Nikiyah’s teacher misunderstood” – Sure. Easy to understand how a common name like Nikiyah could be confused with some other little girl.
2) “The nurse didn’t check Nikiyah’s name before sticking her” – No problem! Surely “somebody” checked to be sure the right person was getting a vaccine with potential for a serious allergic reaction. No need to verify via say, a permission slip from Mom or Dad, perhaps actually asking the little girl what her name was, etc.
3) Troy said the nurse – a Department of Health employee – tried to get her to sign a consent form, after the fact. – Seriously? A government employee asking for what amounts to a cover up? The shock, oh, the surprise!
Home Schooling – There is a reason and the answer to this kind of ‘problem’.
When a Progressive talks of OUR children grab your child’s hand and RUN-DO NOT WALK-AWAY. When a Doctor asks you leave the room so she/he can have a “special talk” with your child grab your child’s hand and RUN-DO NOT WALK-AWAY.
(A)possible allergic reaction to the shot? I take it that the nurse – a Department of Health employee – did not have the child’s health records. If there is any integrity at all in that city and state there should be both criminal and administrative investigations and not just for the nurse as she is but an employee. IF.
I do know that in the Army when they were giving mass shots they always had one medic standing by whose only job was to be prepared for adverse reactions. Quite a few blacks had to get alternative shots due to chicken protein reactive condition. Our children got all the recommended shots-at their pediatrician’s office, the pediatrician who knew their issues.
This country has sure got it’s tit in a ringer over this flu–Doctors are not all in agreement on the issue but school officials are I take it. All the best to Nikiyah Torres-Pierre: will they use her picture in the “I deserve ObamaCare” ads? Officials at Public School 335 in Crown Heights could provide the backdrop–carrying a small casket.
The leftists running the schools don’t consider them to be your children until they get sick or knocked up or commit a felony. Then it is your fault.
Get your kids OUT of public schools! We could end this nonsense in a few months if conservatives took their kids out of the indoctrination mills!
Oh yeah, and there’s this too
While that mistake should have been avoided, we can be grateful that the child’s allergic reaction has been treated successfully.
As a former educator of 36 years experience at all levels, I depended upon the School Nurse to keep the staff informed about medical concerns of students – asthma, diabetes, allergies, epilepsy, etc. Additionally, the School Nurses made sure that staff members’ Red Cross First-Aid Cards were updated.
Unfortunately, many districts have cut down or cut all nurses to balance their budgets! Dollars vs Healthy School Environment – who always loses?
THAT is just a small clue as to what will be taking place across the nation when parents and their children become PATIENTS of the Government-Run Health Care System!
Don’t let that happen! jb
Decision making based on reality and not idealism is the problem in the education world. Now throw in the “no tolerance” mindest and you have what you have.
The “innoculate them all” mindset is the same mindset that suspends a student for bringing a “weapon to school” when the weapon is a two inch pocket knife in an emergency survival kit in a locked container in the trunk of their car. Ignore the fact that every care contains a tire iron. Then there is the principal who considers a used shotgun case to be ammunition.
This is the “no tolerance” mindset in full bloom. Their decisions on flu vacination are consistent with their other thinking; if you consider it “thinking.”
…and by all means, let’s have natioinalized healthcare…
Schools shouldn’t be in the business of being the mommy and daddy that liberals don’t provide… but until we turn the nation around, what ya gonna do?
That said, me and my pregnant wife plan on getting the shot at the first opportunity… We have been getting flu shots for years, we are fine, and never get the flu.
This is so off topic, but it’s something that’s worth seeing…
http://www.breitbart.tv/planned-parenthood-leader-resigns-after-watching-ultrasound-of-abortion-procedure/
Schools are supposed to educate children. They have obviously failed at that task and are simply involved in indoctrinating them.
We could end this nonsense if every conservative in the nation simply pulled their kids out of public schools.
Your kids deserve your protection from these Marxist zealots who don’t care in the least if there is some “collateral damage” as they brainwash your kids while forcing you to pay for it!
It’s so sad that none of this surprises me anymore.
I’m just a frog in the saucepan.
Isn’t it just funny how parents entrust their kids to public schools and incidents like this occur? Public schools were no more than dumping grounds for immigrant kids in the late 19th to early 20th centuries and now they have transformed into kiddie daycares for parents too brain-dead to examine the role of public schools in their kids’ lives.
This is what happens when parents cede control of their kids over to public schools. This isn’t an isolated incident… and it won’t be the last one.
Rob,
Congratulations. What’s the due date?
These people want to handle the health care for everyone in the country and they can’t take basic precautions to be sure they have the right patient before they give the shot? Why couldn’t the nurse have simply asked her for her name? It isn’t exactly rocket science, you know. If that allergic reaction had been a little more severe, that kid could have died. I’ve seen anaphylactic shock from an allergic reaction. It isn’t pretty. How would they have explained that, I wonder.
This kind of incompetence is what we’d better expect if the government takes over health care. The citizen, after all, should be grateful that the government “cares” so much about him. How dare we demand basic common sense from them?
If that bill passes, I’m leaving the country.
And coming soon to a school system near you:
Socialistic water
managementrationing at work in VenezuelaCongrats, Rob. I’m not a big believer in unproven vaccinations or overly hyped ones. However, several pregant women have died from this strain so this is a precautionary step for you guys.
I will not be getting the vaccination. My husband will have no choice because they’re ordering it for the military (he’s in the military). This thing has been overhyped to the point that many are worried that the American people are test subjects for this vaccination.
Just a mistake, huh? Well, according to THIS, such “mistakes” kill more people than the War On Terror has.
Okay, here it is again:

You guys are really spoiled in this country. When I was growing up in the USSR, the nurse came over to our kindergarden and gave all the kids shots. Back then, sterile procedures were unknown and so she used the same needle and syringe for each kid. Thirty kids developed severe hepatitis and needed to be hospitalized. Two of them died.
For comparrison, this incident of a mild allergic reaction after a shot with a kid being rushed to the hospital immediately sounds like pretty responsible behavior. The parent was even notified the same day. Is that really something to complain about?
I mean seriously, had this been in China the kid could have been an organ donor before a parent would be notified. In Iran, the kid would be raped and killed and the parents would have to pay jut to get the body back for burial. Don’t be such wooses.
No, Vinny, we are not spoiled. We are simply not willing to be treated like dogs or serfs of the state like you had to deal with in the USSR. I have been treated in Russian hospitals and I know all too well what happens there.
The fact that the people of the USSR were enslaved by their communist masters for more than 70 years does not make us spoiled when we remind our government that they do not RULE us but rather REPRESENT us.
Evidently you are missing the point about why America is different from the USSR.
into the wild? To run untamed with all the other feral incompetents?
Born freeeeee!
Imagine that…a guy from the USSR named Vinny.
The USA cannot be compared to other nations, cultures or peoples. We are who we are.
This is like comparing apples to roses.
Welcome to the world of Obamacare…..
It amazes me when people flee tyranny and then complain that those of us who have enjoyed the benefit of the freedoms they struggled to enjoy are “spoiled.”
Should we aspire to the behavior of tyrants or to the behavior of free people?
It’s probably my old goombah…
Vinny DelVecchio Baldarenko
Apples and Roses both belong to the family Rosaceae.
USSR, China and the USA belong to the family Socialistaea, so i personally think a comparison is warranted.
All your kids are belong to us!
There was a movie about this called, “My Cousin Vinny Got Sent to the Gulag.”
I really liked the part played by Marishka Tomeiski where she is first murdered by the Tatar Hordes, and then murdered by the vicious Cossacks, and then murdered again by the Bolsheviks. I laughed, I cried, my life was changed…
WarEagle82…You sound like Chapoutier-could he be rubbing off on to you
? I do remember Marisa Tomei and her overought description of “Positraction” in 1960s era cars from “My Cousin Vinny”
Number 1. In pediatrics, you ALWAYS get signed permission, from child (if allowed) or parent/guardian. View it and verify it. Number 2. You ALWAYS verify the idenity of the patient prior to giving any medications or injections or treatments. Any patient. This nurse is going to find herself in front of the Board of Nursing for a disciplinary hearing, shortly. Since injury occurred, following the injection, she will probably face suspension.
Love2Rumba,
I don’t think I have ever seen a more vile insult hurled on these pages. I am wounded to the core…
wareagle, I believe you misunderstood my comment. I do not believe that vaccinating kids without parental consent is responsible behavior, and trying to get consent after screwing up is further proof that these folks behaved irresponsibly. What illustrated in my description of “advanced” socialized medicine is just how bad things can get. I also think that people pushing this form of utopia have no idea of what they are promoting. Peggy Noonan sometimes writes a good article and the last one she posted at WSJ is worth reading. That article explains much more eloquently than I can, that our political class is made of ignorant, callous, and spoiled brats.
Vinny,
Evidently I misunderstood your point. I don’t read Peggy Noonan much any longer but I’ll take a look when I have time.
Our political class is largely composed of people who are educated beyond their intelligence, arrogant, callous, spoiled brats who desperately need to be reminded that they work for us. They govern in our stead. The do NOT rule us. It is time to drive that point home to these people.
I’m sure these mistakes will be eliminated in a government run health program. Ad if they do, the people who screw up will be held responsive.

What’s with MM’s website displaying only one story at a time?
Has the Cyber Czar been installed and nobody told us of the changes?
love2rumba,
It’s true. WE82 and I are soulmates. We ARE rubbing off on each other. He begins to sound more like me and I begin to have strange dreams about fancy city boys that happened to run out of gas on a lonely, deserted dirt road, hogtied in a basement, and comments about how they have purdy mouths.
I fought this battle over hearing and vision screenings every year for my kids. When they were younger, I sent a note with them instructing the school that they were NOT to be taken out of class for the screening and that they were encroaching on our family doctor’s territory.
When they hit high school, I instructed them to tell the teacher/administrator the same thing, with instructions to call me if there was an issue.
I also opted them out of D.A.R.E., the brain-wash your children to call the cops instead of their parents program. If you have read their booklet yet, please do. You will be appalled. Of course, the school didn’t have an opt out program, I just wrote a letter and instructed them to have my kids do homework in the library.
I’ve also battled “counselors” over schedules and teachers. Once you point out that you don’t have to have your kid in their school at all, or that you can sign up for the district online class, they usually capitulate.
I should have homeschooled, but I’m the main breadwinner in our family so it wasn’t an option. But you are still the parent and still have the right to dictate some things in school if you stand up for yourself and your kids.
Vinny said: “Don’t be such wooses.”
For 70 years Russians just took it right square in the *** daily and did nothing. And you say we are being “wooses”? They did not stand up for themselves until the personal risk was virtually gone.
I will rewrite my comment without sarcasm. The difference between how the school incident was handled now and how it would have been handled in a socialized health utopia is dramatic. In the USSR, even in the 1990′s sterile techniques were not observed. When I got injured, the kindergarden staff didn’t tell my parents of how I got injured and they only found out days later from one of my friends there. If you think asking a parent to sign consent after the fact is bad, and it is, imagine a culture where consent is not even a consideration. Once your health needs are administered by low paid clerks who have limited education and want to use their post to feel some power over you, that will be socialized medicine. You will quickly surrender any notions of what is proper and deserved, because all you will care about is a real threat to your life and will focus on how you can please this “medicine clerk”, so that he will grant you an audience. If you live in a big city, going to a dmv office should provide an illustration. In Russia, it is an established custom that if you want a doctor to treat you, you have to bribe him. If you want to see this doctor, you have bribe the receptionist. I think that many people in this country have been the beneficiaries of relative abundance and safety for so long that they do not know just how miserable the alternatives might be. They think that America can keep giving no matter how much they abuse this country. They don’t really understand that the alternatives to what we now have in this country, are slavery and a meager subsistence in while living in fear. In that, they are spoiled. Still, it was unfair to direct this remark about spoiled Americans to the commenters here. I think that many people here are pretty well informed.
uh, NO goofus, even if we don’t want it, the school system is run on public tax money and that’s what the winner of the lawsuit would get; their own money!
They need to sue the daylights out of the stupid teacher who sent the wrong kid and the stupid nurse who didn’t check the name. I promise when you hold the actual person who screwed up personally accountable, people will start paying attention.
Shimauma2,
No, you can’t sue the teacher.
100% of the responsibility for this falls directly on the nurse and the Department of Health. Period.
As someone who works in a prehospital and hospital environment, there are the ” 5 Rights ” that are supposed to be verified BEFORE ANY adminsitration of medications…
1) Right Patient
2) Right Medication
3) Right Dosage
4) Right Time
5) Right Route
To verify we are giving the medication to the right patient, we ASK the patient for their full name and birthdate and compare what they tell us to the chart/medication order from the doctor.
This is 100% a nursing error.
