Happy 234th Birthday, Marines!

By Michelle Malkin  •  November 10, 2009 09:53 AM

Today is the 234th anniversary of the founding of the U.S. Marine Corps.

Here is the Commandant’s Message celebrating the proud history of the Marines:

Hoorah!

Project Valour IT’s annual fundraiser for wounded warriors continues. I’m on Team Marines and we are nearing our $35,000 goal, but we need help getting over the top. It’s the perfect day to chip in.

Valour IT provides adaptive technology to help severely wounded vets recover faster, establish a support system, and regain their independence. Since the program began, every single dollar raised by Valour IT has been used to provide:

· 4,100+ voice activated laptops
· over 30 Wii systems
· and nearly 100 handheld GPS devices to wounded vets at:

Balboa Naval Hospital
Naval Hospital, Camp Pendleton
Brooke Army Medical Center
Robert E. Bush Naval Hospital
Madigan RMC
Walter Reed AMC
National Naval MC (Bethesda)

and VA centers nationwide.

Freedom is not free. Please support the men and women in uniform who support America:

    From the Halls of Montezuma
    To the Shores of Tripoli;
    We fight our country’s battles
    In the air, on land and sea;
    First to fight for right and freedom
    And to keep our honor clean;
    We are proud to claim the title
    of United States Marine.

    Our flag’s unfurled to every breeze
    From dawn to setting sun;
    We have fought in ev’ry clime and place
    Where we could take a gun;
    In the snow of far-off Northern lands
    And in sunny tropic scenes;
    You will find us always on the job–
    The United States Marines.

    Here’s health to you and to our Corps
    Which we are proud to serve
    In many a strife we’ve fought for life
    And never lost our nerve;
    If the Army and the Navy
    Ever look on Heaven’s scenes;
    They will find the streets are guarded
    By United States Marines.

    Again … SEMPER FI!

    Long ago the Selective Service Draft assigned draftees to any of the military services–not just to the U.S. Army. One of the problems then was WHICH SERVICE SHOULD AN INDUCTEE BE ASSIGNED TO? Fortunately a wise sergeant came up with a hypothetical situation to make great assignments.
    ***
    The Scenario: You are sitting on top of a 300 yard high hill in Korea. All the rest of your 300 man company has been killed. You have 1 round left in your rifle. As you look from your foxhole you see 1000 North Korean soldiers 500 yards away led by a General–and they are getting ready to storm the hill and kill you. What will you do?
    ***
    The first inductee asked the sergeant, ” What’s a rifle? I’m a Massachusetts fisherman.” Easy choice–the sarge sent him to the Navy.
    ***
    The second inductee said, “This looks real bad. I’m going to throw this rifle away and run down the back side of the hill. Maybe I can find a phone or radio and have the Air Force fly over and bomb the enemy.” The sarge said, “Good plan!” and assigned him to the U.S. Air Force.
    ***
    The third inductee said, “I think I can hit the General from 500 years away. I’m going to shoot at him, throw my rifle away, and run down the backside of the hill. Maybe I can find a phone or radio and call in artillery fire on the 1000 soldiers”. The sarge assigned him to the U.S. Army.
    ***
    The last inductee said, “I might miss the General from 500 yards away. I’ll wait until they start coming up the hill. When they are 100 yards away I can’t miss when I shoot the General dead. Then I will FIX BAYONET AND GIVE THEM THEIR LAST CHANCE TO SURRENDER before I jump out of the foxhole and charge them–and I will try to kill them all!” No doubt that the sarge found his U.S. Marine!
    ***
    And they have done it a lot–and succeeded a lot of these desperate times. Marines have a barbarian mindset when you tick them off. They are your best friend and are your worst enemy.

    I joined the Corps in June of ’68. It wasn’t until my second day of boot camp that I was apprised (as only a DI Gunnery Sgt can do) about the coincidence of my date of birth – 11/10/1947. As you can imagine, I had mortal hell through boot camp because I always had to do it better, faster and more of it, it wasn’t just “one more for the Corp” – but I don’t regret a single minute. The Corp gave me the knowledge of myself and what I could do that saw me through the rest of my life. Semper Fi my brothers

    As some others have already noted, “the shores of Tripoli” refers to our military’s first battles with Muslim terrorists.

    The Barbary Powers conflict began during the American Revolution when Muslim terrorists from four different Islamic nations (Tunis, Morocco, Algiers, and Tripoli) began making indiscriminate attacks against the property and interests of what they claimed to be “Christian” nations (America, England, France, Spain, Portugal, Denmark, Sweden, etc.).

    The Barbary Powers (called Barbary “pirates” by most Americans) attacked American civilian and commercial merchant ships (but not military ships) wherever they found them. Prior to the Revolution, American shipping had been protected by the British navy, and during the Revolution by the French navy. After the Revolution, however, America lacked a navy of her own and was therefore left without protection for her shipping. The vulnerable American merchant ships, built for carrying cargoes rather than fighting, were therefore easy prey for the warships of the Barbary Powers, which seized the cargo of the ships as loot and took their seamen (of whom all were considered Christians by the attacking Muslims) and enslaved them. [17]

    In 1784, Congress authorized American diplomats John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson to negotiate with the Muslim terrorists. [18] Negotiations proceeded, and in 1786, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson candidly asked the Ambassador from Tripoli the motivation behind their unprovoked attacks against Americans. What was the response?

    The Ambassador answered us that it was founded on the laws of their Prophet [Mohammed] – that it was written in their Koran that all nations who should not have acknowledged their authority were sinners; that is was their right and duty to make war upon them wherever they could be found and to make slaves of all they could take as prisoners; and that every Musselman [Muslim] who should be slain in battle was sure to go to Paradise. [19]

    It is odd, though, that a country 220 years old would have a military parts of which are fourteen years older. Absolutely no disrespect, but it’s curious.

    By your math, you think the country was born in 1789?
    Absolutely no disrespect, but that’s sad.

    I presume that you’re referring to the year that the first ten amendments were introduced by James Madison to the First United States Congress as a series of articles.

    Our country wasn’t born in 1789, nor in 1788 when the Constitution was ratified, nor in 1787 when the Constitution was written.

    Our country was born July 4th, 1776. Our country was born when the Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Second Continental Congress.

    The fact that it was the Second Continental Congress should also tell you something. The events of the American revolution did not begin with the Declaration of Independence. Americans had already died in armed conflict with the British military before that, including at Lexington and Concord in April 1775.

    Captain Samuel Nicholas formed two battalions of Continental Marines on November 10, 1775 in Philadelphia as naval infantry.

    So yes, the USMC is slightly older (< 1 year older) than our country itself.

    I return to your quote

    Happy Birthday Marines!

    It is odd, though, that a country 220 years old would have a military parts of which are fourteen years older. Absolutely no disrespect, but it’s curious.

    Absolutely no disrespect, but it’s curious that you don’t know the birthdate of our country. Have they stopped teaching that in schools?
