Sarah in the Springs

By Michelle Malkin  •  December 9, 2009 12:24 AM

We had frigid weather and several inches of Goreflakes on the ground here in Colorado Springs, but Sarah Palin lit up the town for a Borders signing earlier this evening that drew yet another massive crowd on her nationwide “Going Rogue” book tour.

My family and I had the great honor and pleasure of meeting the governor, her husband Todd, adorable baby Trig, her lovely parents, relatives, and friends from near and far. Sarah’s energy is boundless and her ability to connect is unparalleled with any public figure I’ve met in covering politics over the last 17 years. I spoke, for example, with the first family in line for the book signing. They arrived at 4:30am with four kids in tow. Sarah, the father of the family told me, had written a personal letter sending prayers and good wishes for one of their children battling cancer. On the way out, I ran into a soldier in BDUs rushing through the door with Palin’s book in hand. Breathless, he asked: “Do you think there’s any hope I’ll get my book signed?” Given the special attentiveness Palin’s staff paid to military and their families (several Blue Star families got VIP access), I’m sure he got his autograph. There are countless stories like this in every single city she has visited.

The governor and I talked briefly about Copenhagen (here’s her latest piece in the Washington Post calling on President Obama to stay home in the wake of ClimateGate), left-wing attacks on conservative politicians (Michele Bachmann is the latest target of specious ethics complaints), and the blessings of living outside the Beltway. Most of all, I’m glad I got a chance to simply say “Thank you” in person — for her strong conservative voice, for her relentless optimism in the face of unrelenting attacks, and for her public service as a defender of life and advocate of the American dream.

***

Stanley Fish gets it:

For many politicians, family life is sandwiched in between long hours in public service. Palin wants us to know that for her it is the reverse. Political success is an accident that says nothing about you. Success as a wife, mother and citizen says everything.

Do I believe any of this? It doesn’t matter. What matters is that she does, and that her readers feel they are hearing an authentic voice. I find the voice undeniably authentic (yes, I know the book was written “with the help” of Lynn Vincent, but many books, including my most recent one, are put together by an editor). It is the voice of small-town America, with its folk wisdom, regional pride, common sense, distrust of rhetoric (itself a rhetorical trope), love of country and instinctive (not doctrinal) piety. It says, here are some of the great things that have happened to me, but they are not what makes my life great and American. (“An American life is an extraordinary life.”) It says, don’t you agree with me that family, freedom and the beauties of nature are what sustain us? And it also says, vote for me next time. For it is the voice of a politician, of the little girl who thought she could fly, tried it, scraped her knees, dusted herself off and “kept walking.”

In the end, perseverance, the ability to absorb defeat without falling into defeatism, is the key to Palin’s character. It’s what makes her run in both senses of the word and it is no accident that the physical act of running is throughout the book the metaphor for joy and real life. Her handlers in the McCain campaign wouldn’t let her run (a mistake, I think, even at the level of photo-op), no doubt because they feared another opportunity to go “off script,” to “go rogue.”

But run she does (and falls, but so what?), and when it is all over and she has lost the vice presidency and resigned the governorship, she goes on a long run and rehearses in her mind the eventful year she has chronicled. And as she runs, she achieves equilibrium and hope: “We’ve been through amazing days, and really, there wasn’t one thing to complain about. I feel such freedom, such hope, such thankfulness for our country, a place where nothing is hopeless.”

The message is clear. America can’t be stopped. I can’t be stopped. I’ve stumbled and fallen, but I always get up and run again.

Sarah Palin is a real, live hero and an icon for young women. My 12 yo daughter and her friends are completely smitten with the Governor. In the spring when the Governor was under so many attacks (the ethics complaint onslaught after the election), my daughter sat down and made a card to send to Gov Palin. I never cease to be amazed how young girls are inspired by her authenticity … they “get” it.

I got to meet Sarah at the Fort Wayne, IN, book signing. I live about 2 miles from the state line with Illinois. I left home at 3 am CST and got to Fort Wayne at about 6:30 EST (about 2 1/2 hours). I was about #275 in line, and waited until about 1:30 EST before my books were signed, one for my mom’s 85th birthday on the 24th of November, one for my nephew’s wife for Christmas. (My mom was thrilled with her gift, and I’m sure my nephew’s wife will be too.)

TV doesn’t do Sarah justice, she is even better looking in person than on TV, and was very gracious. She shook my hand and thanked me for coming. I thanked her for being there, and said, “The politics as usual guys are terrified of you, ma’am. Keep up the good work.” She laughed and said, “Yeah, they don’t like me very much.” I said, “That’s how you know you are right.” And the line moved on.

Her authenticity and principles set her apart, and are the qualities that earn her support and strike terror in the hearts of the political class. I wish we had more people like her to support.

Same here, Michelle has a way of cutting thru and getting to the heart of matters, she doesn’t mince words and lets the chips fall where they may. She is able to express her ideas so coherently that even the dull can understand. That is one of the reasons why the Left hates her so much and the reason I and many others love her. Her intuitiveness is excellent, she is not afraid of telling it like it is.

She and the Governor, are both individualists, both outspoken on issues, and each has a love for our country that is very passionate. I believe when these two ladies are in the same room together liberal heads will explode. I look forward to that day when Michelle interviews the Governor!!

RedPill, thanks for the timely reminder about the contributions of Phyllis Schlafly to America. She was truly a feminist with conservative ideals, in other words, despised by the left. But I’m more grateful for her contributions than for those of her leftist detractors, whose ideas have created far more harm than good for America. I got in line in Orlando at 430am and was #204. Barnes & Noble opened at 9am so we could get our wristbands, the number of the group we were in and were told to be back by 6pm for a 730 signing. Sarah is very petite and oh, so pretty. Not much makeup (like on tv) and so relaxed and engaging. We talked about our children coming back from Iraq, she asked my name and reached for my hand TWICE to shake it. She asked everyone their names, btw. The folks who were there and had family or children with Down’s Syndrome were special people to her. She asked questions of those with adult relatives if they worked, how they were doing, as if gleaning some personal insight as to how Trig’s life could be in the future.
When I left the table with my book, a woman came up to me and said, “Aren’t you going to shake my hand, too? I’m her mother.” I hugged her and then her father came up and said, “What about me? I’m her father.” Hugged him, too. What a great family. We all had a good time, made new friends and all were so happy to have met her.

It was worth every minute. As others have said, she is even prettier in person. Shook her hand and she complemented me on the “Alaska” shirt I was wearing. I was number 785 and there were hundreds of people in line behind me. I thanked her for everything and turned to walk away….and there was her Dad. Talked briefly with him. The more I hear from Sarah the more I like her. I am about a third of the way through her book and I am impressed with her love of God, family and America, and her perseverance.

Anyone notice the recent poll having Sarah only 1 point behind the One?

It’s easy to see why the left is so afraid of her.

Heh heh. That witch was in Fort Wayne too, but received a very cool reception from the crowd after the first person she approached said something to the effect of “I know you, you’re Andrea Mitchell from NBC.” She soon retreated to a set and interviewed herself because no one would talk to her. (At least, nothing she wanted to put on air.)

On the other hand, some other people came through, from local and Chicago news and the E! channel, and got interviews. One of the people in line near me recognized a woman with the E! channel folks as a former NBCer, but we had mercy on her after she explained she had quit NBC.

I declined an interview from the E! people because I didn’t want my cover blown, since I was giving the signed books as gifts and was supposed to be in Michigan, not the other side of Indiana in Fort Wayne. I encouraged them to interview the 16 years old young lady in line near me instead, which they did. Very nice young woman, a big Sarah fan, whose mom had re-arranged her home schooling schedule so she could be there. She gave a great interview, speaking about how she was inspired by Sarah to get involved in local politics. Now there is something you don’t see very often, a teenager who is familiar with local politics, and is getting involved “hands on”. But she represents the kind of people who are attracted to Sarah.

Someone else mentioned the great people in line, I have to second that. I had decided against taking something to read while I waited in line on the theory there would be good people to meet and talk with in line, and it was a good decision. I think all of us in line really enjoyed each others company, and the time did fly by.

I thank God for people like her who are willing to put up with incredible hardship, both personal and professional, in order to get the message to the people. Like our own Michelle Malkin, Gov. Palin is sent by God. There are other conservative women out there who can lead us also…Michele Bachman, of course, who is already in politics. But we have new people coming into the forefront lately, like Liz Cheney, who are amazing voices!! I predict that Liz Cheney will be a candidate for political office in 2010. If you haven’t heard her speak, you MUST! She is incredibly well-spoken, intelligent, unflappable and truly conservative. I am keeping my eye on her…big time.

Someone just mentioned Phyllis Schlafly and I just had a ‘come to Jesus’ meeting with myself. My first reaction was negative until I recalled why that knee jerk reaction existed in the first place.

In my past life I was a liberal Democrat influenced by the feminists who convinced far too many of us that they represented ‘all women’. They were spending extraordinary amounts of time labeling Mrs. Schlafly as a ‘nut job’. Apparently that ‘brand’ was effective, until recently when I started to actually think about what she represented and has done over the years in the face of such hatred. It really does show how this kind of personal attack can influence, and create a mentality that makes no rational sense and requires no thought whatsoever….just the knee jerk reaction to programmed thinking.

I believe that is what the left is attempting to do today with Gov. Palin. I am always astounded at the intense reaction on the part of liberals when you mention her name. They never articulate arguments against her political beliefs, they just call her ignorant and inexperienced.

As a reformed liberal I’ve come to the realization that these so called feminists do not represent historical figures like Elizabeth Stanton, or Susan B Anthony who believed in the sanctity of life and importance of being a woman….nor do they represent me.

Now there is something you don’t see very often, a teenager who is familiar with local politics, and is getting involved “hands on”. But she represents the kind of people who are attracted to Sarah.

Spot on Nova. For all her strenghts, the ability to inspire people to get involved may well turn out to be the MOST important to this Nation.

We are all born creatures of sin, until that “Jesus moment”. Most on the left side don’t get that far.

One thing Sarah Palin did when nominated to be Vice President was expose the feminists for what they truly were. The light of truth will always expose evil for what it really is and make it scurry for cover.

When someone can give me the particulars of what makes Obama qualified to be President, then I might listen to the naysayers about Sarah Palin provided they have some factual points to elucidate. So far, her experience still tops Obama’s. Or if you want to count the experience he gained after taking office, then it shows what an abysmal failure he’s been and not up to the task.

And as you point out if you can “field dress” a moose it shouldn’t be much harder to field dress a democrat or RINO. The only real differences are (1)mooses are smarter, and (2)there is more C**P in a dem or RINO!

I vote for Michelle Malkin as “spotter” and gunbearer–she would make a great PR person and later a great Press Secretary. She could tie the GIBBS clown over the fender of Sarah’s snowmobile after the 2012 election.

we also were startled by Palin in Texas. Even though her book signing wasn’t scheduled until 11am, she stopped by briefly before 7am to greet some of the people getting into line! It was 28 degrees and even Sarah looked cold (She wasn’t in ‘Alaskawear’; probably hadn’t even brought it). The report of it all is here.

It looks like Sarah is carrying Alaska style weather with her wherever she goes. :) )

Phil, my feelings exactly. I heard Medved on Monday also practically choking after Norm Podhoretz suggested that Palin might have that same “Reaganesque” ability to come across simple and yet be so (and I quote) “maddeningly right” about most things.

As much as I respect Mr. Medved for what he does for Conservatives, he is nothing if not a total party man. He’ll be parroting the GOP line to the last breath.

IMO, here is the difference between Sarah and the GOP. She really loves her state and the lower 48. She loves being an American. She loves having a family, a faith, a dream. She understands and sees what the founding Fathers of our Nation understood and hoped for. She isn’t mean, spiteful, keep my Congressional job at all costs like our current DEM and GOP reps are now. She believes in the intellect of the American citizen who knows crap when they see it. Like John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, she is a patriot to be reckoned with. Rock on Sarah – and thanks Michelle M!

    Great comment.

    As a reformed liberal

I can relate. I was born and raised in a blue state Democratic family. Then I attended a university that is one of the many that, while founded as Christian institutions, are now run by liberals.

It wasn’t until I was out on my own in the business world that I began to truly associate with Christian conservative capitalists, and I took the red pill…

    Morpheus:
This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the blue pill – the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill – you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes.

Morpheus: [to Neo who is choosing the red pill]
Remember… all I’m offering is the truth. Nothing more.

The rest of my family still thinks the way you described:

a mentality that makes no rational sense and requires no thought whatsoever…just the knee jerk reaction to programmed thinking.

    Morpheus:
The Matrix is a system, Neo. That system is our enemy. But when you’re inside, you look around, what do you see? Businessmen, teachers, lawyers, carpenters. The very minds of the people we are trying to save. But until we do, these people are still a part of that system and that makes them our enemy. You have to understand, most of these people are not ready to be unplugged. And many of them are so inured, so hopelessly dependent on the system, that they will fight to protect it.

Michele Bachmann is the latest target of specious ethics complaints

ST. PAUL, Minn. – An ethics watchdog group said Tuesday that U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann misused her official Web site to promote a Washington rally against the Democrats’ proposed health care overhaul.

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, or CREW, asked the Office of Congressional Ethics to determine whether the Minnesota Republican violated House rules barring members of Congress from using their official Web sites to solicit support for their positions.

Misused her official website? Oh, the horror!

Until these crapweasels campout on Rangel’s front lawn and confront him about his MASSIVE TAX FRAUD, I’ve got 3 words to say to the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington:

    CREW,
