With Demcare now in critical condition, Tea Party activists are turning up the heat today in Washington for the Code Red Rally on Capitol Hill. Laura Ingraham is hosting. Speakers include Sen. Tom Coburn, M.D. (R-Okla.) and Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.). Folks are traveling from across the country to be there.

If you are in the D.C. area today, join them at 1:30 pm, Upper Senate Park, on Constitution Ave. between New Jersey and Delaware St. NE.

More info here and here.

Update: A Hill source says to pay attention to Sen. Ben Nelson. He is reportedly being threatened with closure of an air force base if he doesn’t fall in line and will be offered a “blank check” bribe bigger than Sen. Landrieu’s.

Also: The Dems now expect the CBO scoring of the Reid plan that no one has seen to look good once the Medicare expansion is thrown under the bus. And: After all the sound and fury, Joe Lieberman is now reportedly on board with Demcare.

The Hill reports that Dick “In the Dark” Durbin is “moving toward 60.”

Update: Heeeeere come’s MoveOn! Steamed at the Democrat majority over negotiating with Joe Lieberman, the nutroots will hold their own “emergency rally” today at 1pm Eastern today to lobby for nationalized health care.

Wonder if unhinged Jane Hamsher will show up to burn Sen. Lieberman’s wife in effigy.

Update 11:49am Eastern: Lieberman talking to press right now. Says Demcare plan is now “heading in the right direction.” GOP Sen. Susan Collins is standing by him, smiling, through his remarks.

Ok, Susan Collins speaks. She can’t see voting for the bill in its current form. “It’s still too deeply flawed for me to support it.” She says she won’t support it even with amendments intended to improve the bill (that no one has seen, of course).

Update 2:00pm Eastern: Sen. Tom Coburn at Code Red Rally. “This health care bill isn’t about health care. It’s about government control…This bill must be stopped.”

Don’t believe everything you hear. The Senate Democrats are not on the verge of a collapse. They are on the verge of compromising every single thing they want just so they can get a “health care reform” bill passed.

    Here’s what I’m being told:

The Democrats have given Joe Lieberman everything he wanted. Joe will now vote for the bill.

Ben Nelson (D-NE) is being threatened with having every major military installation in Nebraska shut down. Yes, I know, but the Democrats are playing for keeps on this and health care “reform” is more important to them than the military.

Liberals are being told they have to accept this to give them any credibility going into next year’s election. They don’t want to be accused of “killing reform.”

Lastly, the CBO scoring of the bill is going to look fine now that the Medicare affecting portions are going to be dropped.

Inevitably, this legislation is going to cause health care costs to skyrocket and force people into socialized medicine.

But Barack Obama and the Democrats don’t care. They want to be seen as doing something and beating the Republicans — with what, they don’t care.

Redstate. Kathryn Lopez at NRO reports the same thing.

500 billion. The offer to Nelson.

The White House and Democratic Leadership in the Senate has told Senator Nelson they will close every military base in Nebraska — a threat that is not credible, really — but they have also offered Senator Nelson between $300 billion to $500 billion in earmarks, according to key hill health care operatives. These hundreds of billions will be available for whatever he wants to spend them on in Nebraska.

Given Senator Nelson’s hard core earmarking history as an appropriator, the word on the street is that this is the real carrot that could get Nelson to agree to some cover amendment that would allege to protect the innocent unborn from government funding of abortion, but, in fact, would not.

Unless a Sanders or Burris — or some other liberal — objects to the bill having no public option, then if Nelson holds the bill dies, and if Nelson does not hold, the bill passes. Given that the Dems have caved to Lieberman — this is the whole ball game — Senator Nelson. The Dem leadership could still win without Nelson, if they got Snowe since there is no public option, or they could cave to Nelson like they did to with Lieberman, and like the Speaker did with Stupak, and add in the abortion restrictions, but this would tempt fate since their liberal base would have to swallow both no public option and abortion restrictions.

The next 36 hours are key to this fight, given the fact the Dems caved to Lieberman. It’s all about Nelson now, plain and simple. Will he do what his constituents want and kill the bill, or will he take the cash?

‘Marriage penalty’ buried in healthcare bills

“Former Minnesota state legislator Allen Quist points out that two single people each making $30,000 per year would pay $1,320 combined for private health insurance if the Pelosi House bill was in effect now. However, if the two individuals were to marry, they would pay a combined cost of $12,000 a year for the same level of insurance under the Pelosi bill.

Quist notes this “marriage penalty” extends all the way from a two-person combined income of $58,280 to $86,640. The GOP candidate notes that that $28,000 spread encompasses a large number of Americans.”

Unfortuantely you are probably right. As Glenn Beck correctly points out, they only want the framework in the bill for control; the details are unimportant.

He noted that HHS is mentioned over 2,300 times in the Senate Bill, more than once per page. HHS will be the mechanism to exercise control of the American people.

He’s correct, and that is why you are likely correct.

It is all about control and soon they will control..everything.

Well, Congress needs reform worse but one thing at a time. And the GOP is STUPID if it does not have an INSURANCE reform bill waiting in the wings if this thing dies. Not that i have much faith in the GOP of late……

I keep reading voices in anger, you can’t really mean vote ‘em all out. Why would you want to remove the exact type of congressman your struggling have represent you and retake control of our giverment? Granted there probably isn’t much more than a handful that are worth keeping, but this throw ‘em all out is way over reacting.

Agreed, voting ‘all the rascals out’ is what got us into this mess. That was the emotion that voted in Democrats in 2006 and 2008 along with a healthy dose of ‘Yes we can’ and ‘Hope and Change’. Let’s not make the same mistake here and now. Know who you’re voting for and make sure you know exactly what they stand for. Make sure they truly support smaller government and aren’t just blowing ‘hope and change’ up your sixth point of contact. If they sound like they’re preaching everything you ever wanted to hear and want you to respond ‘Yes we can’. Maybe you need to think, ‘No you can’t’. If you want Republicans, be my guest, remember they were just as much about tax and spend four and six years ago as any Democrat that walked the planet.
Myself, I’m voting for conservatives, whether for school board or city or county or state or even national government. I don’t care if they’re tattooed with Elephants and ‘R’s and sing the Republican party song at every opportunity. Unless they’re a died in wool fiscal conservative, who believes that the Texas and US Constitutions very narrowly restrict them in their actions and who can tell me what those documents say and why they can’t force me to do much of anything save for the defense of the state and nation, provide the means of encouraging commerce through enabling transportation, providing access to energy resources and encouraging the individual over the state. I’m not voting for them. I quit thinking Republicans were any better than Democrats about eight years ago. Now I’m looking to vote for conservatives regardless of party affiliation.
    That’s my opinion.

We don’t need to talk to you. We just need to make sure that when you cast your automatic Republican votes, that it will be for the candidate we conservatives have picked for you.

Kind of hard to prove what would have happened if we had McCain/Palin instead of the marxist/communist we have….but there is absolutely no way I’m being convinced that what we are seeing now is not far worse than what we would have seen with McCain/Palin.

And yes, I am no fan of McCain.

The biggest RINOs running, Giuliani and Huckster, would have been better than The Fresh Prince of Bill Ayers.

it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty. …
And what country can preserve its liberties, if its rulers are not
warned from time to time, that this people preserve the spirit of
resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as
to the facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost
in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from
time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure.”

The threat of a base closing is a bluff. Futhermore it is a single source rumor, either to give Sen Nelson cover to vote one way, or to give him leverage to exact his ‘Louisianna Purchase’ ala Sen Landrieua.

There is this thing called BRAC that is used before a base can be closed. The entire list of military installations is voted on up, or down.

No one base is singled out. The single source rumor would have greater credibility if it had been said that the Nebraska Air Force base was being added to the BRAC list.

Not saying it isn’t true, but it does not pass the smell test. It passes the political rumor test of speculation to advance an agenda, but not much else.
