Another police ambush in Washington state

By Michelle Malkin  •  December 22, 2009 12:10 PM

Just a few weeks ago, I wrote a column on the War on Cops — reviewing the past year of violence against police officers and the cultural war that has been waged against them for the past several decades.

The war is not over.

In Eatonville, Wash., two officers were ambushed yesterday:

Two sheriff’s officers responding to a dispute between two brothers were ambushed by one of the brothers lying in wait with a gun after being welcomed into the home by the other, authorities said. The gunman was killed and the officers were seriously wounded.

The shooting is the third in three months in which authorities say a gunman has taken aim at law enforcement officials in Washington state.

Pierce County Sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said a sergeant and a deputy were shot about 8:45 p.m. Monday while responding to a dispute between David E. Crable and his brother near Eatonville, a rural community in the Cascade foothills.

Crable, 35, shot the two officers before he was killed when they returned fire, Troyer said. The names of the officers were not immediately released.

The officers were greeted at the door by Crable’s brother, while Crable was in the house arming himself, Troyer said. When the deputies entered the house, Crable opened fire from upstairs, hitting one of the officers multiple times.

“This is somebody that was laying in wait for our guys, armed themselves, with the intent on shooting them,” Troyer told reporters near the shooting scene. “There’s not much we’re going to be able to do when somebody is hiding and arming themselves and we have somebody else inviting us into the residence and the second person opens fire on us.”

The shooting comes less than a month after the deadliest attack on law-enforcement in Washington’s history, when four police officers from Lakewood in Pierce County were shot to death on Nov. 29 by career criminal and police-hater Maurice Clemmons.

The only good news from this story is that the family (the ones not involved) provided first aid for the officers and called 911 which probably saved the officers lives.

Allow officers to respond to home calls with guns out. Mandatory death penalty for anybody shooting at a cop, whether or not injury/death results. That’s a start.

So this is going on elsewhere.

Not too many cop shootings here in Honolulu.

HPD usually doesn’t respond in time to apprehend anyone.

According to both newspapers here, they solve and prosecute approximately 14% of the felonies committed.

I didn’t even call them the last time I had property stolen from my carport.

I pray that the two officers recover completely and quickly.

No kidding, they are pushing for bans on so-called assualt weapons which of course will not reduce crime one bit, so they will say it was not a broad enough ban and try to pass an even more restrictive ban. Rinse and repeat until they take away our gun rights.

America is too close to being a police state now.
Cops are already trained to be paranoid and thuggish as it is. Escalating the paranoia will only get a lot more innocent people killed.
Police are supposed to be public servants. They are already deified as sacred personages set above the people they are supposed to serve. You would make it worse.

Part of the problem here is how the media and government plays up their worship of these government workers as part of their worship of big government at large.

Putting dead police on a media managed pedestal only points out to the mentally unstable how taking out one of these fine hard working folks is one way to poke a stick in the eye of whatever their delusions see as oppressing them…

Expect more of the same so long as the police pedestal practice continues. One must balance compassion for the dead officers with prevention of future delusional violence against those fine folks still serving our neighborhoods.

Yeah, I keep reading about how cops are breaking into people’s homes in the middle of the night and terrorizing them. Happens all the time. (sarc/off)

Cops are already trained to be paranoid and thuggish as it is.

First, a story like this ambush would tend to make anybody a bit “paranoid”. But your statement is ridiculous anyway. Cops are underpaid for the risks, and the PC Bull**** they have to put up with, along with the anti-cop attitudes of nitwits like you.

I’ve known a couple of policeman pretty well. They are honest, capable, decent people doing a tough job. One cop was beaten badly–with a rock–trying to keep three thugs from assaulting a hapless victim in a parking lot. He was off duty at the time–his pistol was in his car.

Yes–there are some “bad apples” in all groups. Most cops do the best they can in bad situations. Pray for the police and military who protect and defend us all.

By all means, join the police force and reform it through direct involvement. Put your life on the line for your beliefs.

Police are human and not all humans are good and honorable but insulting the good ones along with the bad does not make much sense.

    Not-OT, but tangential:

Heard on the radio this morning about a woman in NYC, pregnant, having a seizure in a breakfast eatery/bagel joint.

Two NYFD paramedics were getting their coffee and bagel. Customers were screaming at them to assist the woman. They told the crowd to call “911,” they were on break.

The woman died, as did the baby. The firefighters union is, of course, standing behind the paramedics since breaks are part of the negotiated bargaining agreement.

After all the laud and glory given to the NYFD since 9/11, and these two schmucks wipe it all clean in one moment.

Yes, the majority of the firefighters are outstanding, committed individuals who risk their lives daily to serve man.

Not every pilot in the U.S. Navy was at “Tailhook.” But they all faced the disdain of the public afterwards.

A 75-year-old retired minister died of a heart attack last night after strug gling with 13 heavily armed Boston Police officers who stormed the wrong Dor chester apartment in a botched drug raid.

The Rev. Accelyne Williams struggled briefly when the raiding officers – some of them masked and carrying shotguns – subdued and handcuffed him, then he collapsed, police said.

Williams, a retired Methodist minister, was pronounced dead of cardiac arrest at 4 p.m yesterday at Carney Hospital said hospital spokesman William Henderson.

“There is a likelihood or possibility that we did hit the wrong apartment,” said Police Commissioner Paul Evans at a news conference last night. “If that’s the case, then there will be an apology.”
