Via BNONews, a passenger on Detroit-bound NWA Flight 253 was arrested in what MAY have been an attempted hijacking. Also reports that the suspect may have attenpted to light something.
TSA and FBI investigating.

In what was described as an act of terrorism, a Nigerian passenger attempted to ignite an incendiary device aboard a Northwest Airlines flight from Amsterdam to Detroit on Friday as the plane began its approach for landing, federal officials said. The plane landed safely shortly before noon local time.
The suspected would-be bomber suffered burns as the result of his attempt, and two of the other 277 passengers reported minor injuries, authorities said. FBI agents were investigating the incident, which a White House official said was believed to be terrorism.
“He was trying to ignite some kind of incendiary device,” said a federal anti-terrorism official, who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the case. “He lit himself on fire and he’s suffered some burns.”
The official did not reveal the nature of the explosive device and said it was too early to say how potent or sophisticated it was. The passenger has been identified as a Nigerian who began traveling from Nigeria and caught the flight in Amsterdam, the anti-terrorism official said.

Even now, I detect in the public beyond my own family the partial “sympathetic understanding” that these are desperate people driven half-mad to do what they do because of the injustices of the western world (USA). This the mantra of most MSM talking heads and the attitude of most academia. Myself, we have to stop treating these animals like naughtey choirboys and outright exterminate them in their nest. It is INSANELY maddening to know that there are animals out there who don’t give an F about the lives of your family traveling with you. Well, it’s long overdue that we return the favor. If I won the lottery (since the gov’t isn’t going to do it) I’d hire top mercenaries to covertly ferret the sewers and dark allies of the world and forge underworld contacts and whatever it takes to hunt out and quietly murder — yes murder — these animals in their beds. Don’t need B52s or Marines. We need a hyper-advanced covert force to shove the fear of Christ up their fantic heads that just whispering about moving against us is a death sentence. Nip this crap in the bad. Enough bucks it can be done. The will to do such just isn’t there — until a Iranian supplied/stolen Parkistani nuke fries Manhattan and jolts us in the ass.

HI SSNARK–#95. I saw demolition / EOD personnel use primacord a few times when I was in the Army long ago. It was pretty impressive stuff–cutting power poles in half, blowing out no longer needed reinforced concrete blast protection walls, etc. I seem to remember that PETN was used in it–a little bit went a long way.

I have been reading DU comments for laughs since this happened. I have seen everything from it being some sort of Cheney/Rove plot to comments (more than a few) about the suspicious timing of it of it occurring in the midst of the healthcare debate. Two words that are real scarce though are “muslim” and “terrorist”. Oh, another word that is hard to find is “Obama”. If it had happened before his election you can be sure Bush policy would have been all over the comments.
Let’s see, enemy combatant not in uniform attempts to sabotage a commercial airline. Sounds pretty straight forward to me. Any questions?
The next few days will bring:
1. A statement by the msm not to rush to judgment. He could have been a rogue Nigerian just mad that his soda was warm, or wanting to celebrate the July 4th holiday a bit early.
2. ACLU steps in to investigate possible lawsuit as the terrorist sustained a bloody lip while terrified passengers tried to prevent him from killing all of them 5000 feet above Michigan.
3. He will get 5 US attorneys working for free to put the US on trial. Was he justified in doing this?? We must know! Did he have Miranda rights read to him??? Did the airline do enough to make sure that if a terrorist tried to blow up a plane, that agitated vigilante passengers were not able to attack him.
4. Shortly he will sue the airline, the hospital, the US govt and certain passengers because his burns were not attended to quick enough, causing him untold pain and suffering.
5. At taxpayer expense he will be given round the clock care. His interrogation will consist of threatening not to fluff his pillow at night before he goes to sleep.

The one thing that gives me comfort is that the people of DU(one extreme) and the people at this site(the other extreme) are just a very small fraction of America. I’m glad that neither of you matter much nor do your opinions.
Most of us aren’t in denial like DU type people and most of us don’t want to kill all brown people and bash(or kill) the President like wingnuts.
I’ve noticed a lot of the comments on some of the liberal blogs are saying that it was just an “attempted” act of terrorism and not an “actual” act of terrorism.
I would have to say that if I would have been on that plane that it would have terrorised me ….. And I believe other people would have felt threatened and terrorised as well.
To the liberals I would say ask the people that were there how they felt.

Please remember that TSA (and the equivalent organizations around the world) is nothing but a giant employment program not filled with the best and brightest. The fact that we haven’t had many planes go down has little to do with the effectiveness of airline security and everything to do with the lack of attempts. People carrying “dangerous” items aboard aircraft don’t cause terrorist events, terrorists aboard aircraft cause terrorist events.

During the ’70s, when terrorist nuts were hijacking planes, passenger sat in their seats doing nothing and the airline industry didn’t feel that it was cost effective to secure the cockpits. After 9/11, the doors could not be secured fast enough because the flying public didn’t want to pay to be blown up. And the gov added plies of useless, time wasting searches. Now we learn that there were all sorts of red flags around this nut job and our gov couldn’t seen to have the time or inclination to have his name added to the no fly list. As a result of an office glich, all passengers will need to go to airport for a strip search and be duct-taped to the seat. The response to terrorists acts seems to be more layers of stupid conducted by the stupid!

I agree. One flight I take usually lasts 1 hour 20 minutes. I guess anyone needing to use the restroom must do so within that first 20 minutes.

I used the singlular: “The American Voter.” This means I was speaking of the average, the election result, not every individual in the class. I was speaking of the class of people considered as a whole.
If you think the election results in 2006 and especially in 2008 are not proof positive of the ongoing imbecility of that class of people, then perhaps you belong to that class.
However, I figure you just misunderstood my meaning. I am inclined to think there are very few people who comment here who don’t realize just how incredibly stupid the American Voter was in 2006 and 2008.
