Via BNONews, a passenger on Detroit-bound NWA Flight 253 was arrested in what MAY have been an attempted hijacking. Also reports that the suspect may have attenpted to light something.

In what was described as an act of terrorism, a Nigerian passenger attempted to ignite an incendiary device aboard a Northwest Airlines flight from Amsterdam to Detroit on Friday as the plane began its approach for landing, federal officials said. The plane landed safely shortly before noon local time.
The suspected would-be bomber suffered burns as the result of his attempt, and two of the other 277 passengers reported minor injuries, authorities said. FBI agents were investigating the incident, which a White House official said was believed to be terrorism.
“He was trying to ignite some kind of incendiary device,” said a federal anti-terrorism official, who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the case. “He lit himself on fire and he’s suffered some burns.”
The official did not reveal the nature of the explosive device and said it was too early to say how potent or sophisticated it was. The passenger has been identified as a Nigerian who began traveling from Nigeria and caught the flight in Amsterdam, the anti-terrorism official said.

Mmmm. This is going to take some sorting out. Why wasn’t the explosive picked up by security in Holland? Can you get a cigarette lighter on board these days? Is this guy playing with a full deck, do you think?
My guess is that this was another dry run, to both test the system and to provide false assurances to the media and politicians that yes, whoever it was, was stopped so it is no big deal. Relax.
I do believe there will be a 9/11 type attempt in the next couple of years. We know these guys love the planning exercises and do not like to be rushed. But it is coming. If I were a betting man, I would say after the 2010 elections.
But I am not a betting man.

Iran IL-76 AWACS crash

Yes it is true, has been confirmed by many media sources and online sources. Iran has
lost it’s only AWACS aircraft to an accident. A flyover featuring the IL-76 Simorgh AWACS
escorted by F-5E Tiger II fighters was suppose to be the aerial finale at the military parade
in Tehran that was celebrating the beginning of the Iran-Iraq War.. While the AWACS and
F-5 fighters were flying South of Tehran waiting to perform the flyover, a mid-air collision
occured and both aircraft went down in flames. The collision seems to of happened very
quickly as no distress or mayday calls were recieved from either cockpit, although another
report says that the AWACS tried to make an emergency landing, but the radar dome came
apart and hit the tail causing a crash. The debris and wreckege from both aircraft reportedly
landed on the mausoleum burial site of the Islamic revolution’s founder Ruhollah Khomeini,
a national shrine. All seven crewmembers were killed.
The IL-76 Simorgh AWACS was one of three aircraft built by Iraq in the 1980s, one was destroyed on the ground by coalition airpower during the 1991 Gulf War and the other two
were flown to Iran to escape destruction. The remaining AWACS that crashed this week was just recently upgraded with the assistance of Russian technicians. New electronics and a
new unidentified radar with a reported range of 1,000 kilometers made the aircraft a valuable asset to the Iranian Air Force, it was officially launched in April 2008.

From what I can pick up on local press (Michigan/Detroit), The Nigerian perpetrator was acting alone, has residency in Romulus Mich. and was traveling with a one way ticket. He apparently “lit some powder” but also had “something” taped to his body. He apparently was observed and subdued by passengers. He sustained burns on both hands and was taken to U of M burn center in Ann Arbor (best/closest hospital to air port). All news reports claim he has ties to al Queda. Some sugestion the “feds” knew of him.
I believe we have just experienced an extremely near miss of a major tragedy. Will we never learn? Young male Muslim traveling alone with a one way ticket. Wow.

I would hope the US would have a policy no plane could come directly from Lagos, or originate in Lagos with a stop, without the plane being emptied and searched and the passengers re-screened.

Over at DKos, some are already going with the loan nut theory, others are blaming airport security in Amsterdam, and some are insisting that it was just a wittle firecwacker; none seem to be pointing out how the (apparently) lax visa terms were granted under Bush (Obamites probably will, while ignoring Obama’s continuation or extension of such laxity).
Amsterdam should not be blamed, at least not for having security any less stringent than in the U.S. (Some of the slightly informed Kos commentators are making this point.) I have recent personal experience at Amsterdam-Schiphol, both going through security when coming connecting from a flight originating outside the Schengen agreement zone (Switzerland in March) and skipping security when connecting from a flight originating inside the zone (Switzerland in May). The only difference with U.S. security was that they seemed to have a clue about recent changes (e.g. they knew my laptop bag allowed screening without removing the laptop, a then-recent development that a TSA agent was unaware of a month later).

Financial Times is reporting that the US government is officially referring to this as “a terror incident”. I can’t access the entire article but I would be interested in knowing whether it was the White House, FBI, CIA, DHS or someone else. It would be very curious if the WH and DHS remained silent other than the standard euphemisms and knee jerk warnings against “anti-Islamic backlash”.
This was an act of terrorism whether he’s connected to al quaida or not. However, as for being a ‘man caused disaster’, no, the most recent one of those remains last year’s election committed by Obama voters.

As for someone acting, in all the articles I have read on this so far, not one has mentioned Federal Air Marshals. In fact, I haven’t heard diddly about them for some time.

The gov would rather do the “head in the sand” method of national security. If you don’t look at the problem it will go away because the terrorists will lose interest. No confirmation that President Obama has appointed Williams Ayres as Airline Security Czar yet. Robert Gibbs made a statement but no one know what it was.

FNC said that the Dutch gov won’t allow us to have air marshals on our own planes. My response to that is that we don’t fly there until we can.
Of course this was Islamic terrorism, and interestingly it was focused on the Detroit/Dearborn area by way of Nigeria (and probably London.
Finally, the FBI is beginning to get it when it comes to Islamic Terrorism. These attacks may be poorly planned and apparently idiotic, but they all have a pattern which links them to radical Islam. Bush was right – you take it to the source and keep taking it to the source until the source is as close to gone as is possible.
It worked for Clinton. It worked really well.
So that Clinton strategy didn’t work out quite so well for America, but that’s not his problem.

Interesting, the story here, and here tell that he sought out a radical imam, (possibly anwar awlacki) who recruited him and gave him room and board while he received Al Qaeda training. The bomb, (not incendiary device as described) was made with PETN the mid level brisance explosive used in Detonating (Det) Cord with a syringe full of an unknown chemical used to create a binary explosive. Apparently, the saving grace on Christmas day was that not enough of the two chemicals reacted to do anything but ignite the PETN slowly enough to cause it burn rather than explode. While the quick acting young man, Jasper Schuringa did bring the bomber down and subdue him, it was the grace of the almighty, and perhaps the numbers of Al Qaida bomb makers that have met him lately, that kept the disaster that could have been, just that.

Even now, I detect in the public beyond my own family the partial “sympathetic understanding” that these are desperate people driven half-mad to do what they do because of the injustices of the western world (USA). This the mantra of most MSM talking heads and the attitude of most academia. Myself, we have to stop treating these animals like naughtey choirboys and outright exterminate them in their nest. It is INSANELY maddening to know that there are animals out there who don’t give an F about the lives of your family traveling with you. Well, it’s long overdue that we return the favor. If I won the lottery (since the gov’t isn’t going to do it) I’d hire top mercenaries to covertly ferret the sewers and dark allies of the world and forge underworld contacts and whatever it takes to hunt out and quietly murder — yes murder — these animals in their beds. Don’t need B52s or Marines. We need a hyper-advanced covert force to shove the fear of Christ up their fantic heads that just whispering about moving against us is a death sentence. Nip this crap in the bad. Enough bucks it can be done. The will to do such just isn’t there — until a Iranian supplied/stolen Parkistani nuke fries Manhattan and jolts us in the ass.
