Breaking: Second Nigerian on Detroit-bound flight arrested; Update: “Stomach problems”

By Michelle Malkin  •  December 27, 2009 02:40 PM

Jihadists never rest.

And their m.o. has always been: Try, try again.

Hello:

The Associated Press has learned that a second Nigerian man has been taken into custody aboard a jetliner in Detroit after locking himself in the airliner’s bathroom.

A law enforcement official tells the AP that the incident took place aboard the same Northwest flight that was attacked on Christmas Day. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the incident was ongoing.

Hey, Janet: Still see no indication of a larger threat? System still “working?” Just another lone nut? Nothing to see here, move along…

***

More info from Detroit radio station WWJ:

One day after a Nigerian man was charged with attempting to blow up a Northwest Airlines flight from Amsterdam to Detroit, another man was detained for unruly behavior after the same flight landed safely in Michigan.

A Delta spokeswoman says all 257 passengers have been safely taken off the plane. Delta operates the Northwest flight.

About 10 emergency vehicles, sirens blaring, surrounded the plane after it landed.

Metro Airport spokesman Scott Wintner told WWJ radio there was a report of suspicious activity on Delta/Northwest flight 253 from Amsterdam – the same flight number as in the attempted Christmas Day attack.

Sue Elliott, a Delta spokesperson, told CBS News the passenger in question “was verbally disruptive. Out of abundance of caution the flight crew asked that the plane be met on arrival by law enforcement.”

There were reports that the man detained was also Nigerian. There was no indication he had attempted to cause any physical harm to anyone aboard the flight, or to the airliner, reportedly a Boeing 737.

A law enforcement official tells CBS News correspondent Bob Orr passengers and crew became suspicious after the man locked himself in an airplane bathroom. A search of the plane was being carried out. There was no immediate word of any device being found.

CAIR grievance-mongering press conference in 3, 2, 1…

Update: Not a terrorism incident, say US officials…

A man who was “acting belligerently” on a Detroit-bound Northwest Airlines flight Sunday is not a terror threat and only became disruptive because he had fallen ill and refused to leave the aircraft’s bathroom, according to a U.S. official.

The man was subdued by the flight crew and detained by law enforcement authorities upon landing after the incident bore strikingly similar markings to the attempt two days ago by a passenger to light an explosive aboard another Northwest flight. Both planes originated in Amsterdam, and both men were Nigerian, according to the U.S. official.

The unidentified man made several trips to the bathroom prior to the plane’s descent, officials said, ultimately raising suspicions among flight staff. When he did not answer questions while in a lavatory about an hour before landing, flight staff contacted authorities and asked to have law enforcement authorities meet the plane upon landing.

“We’re going to take extraordinary precautions,” Robert Fucano, Wayne County Executive told reporters at Detroit Metropolitan Airport. “Even if you are sick you have to respond to what people are asking you.”

Just before 9/11, the big topic raging around the country was DWB-driving while Black, racial profiling. Actually race was only one component but the Black “community” was raging against the Man. Yet profiling worked even if it netted innocents occasionally. Immediately after 9/11 Blacks were screaming for profiling as much as anyone else. It is a good tool and it works if employed by professionals. We would save a lot of effort, money and future potential tragedies if we returned to profiling immediately.

One would think so. I agree completely.

However, you almost get the impression this Adminstration is so arrogant that they believe with the help of the MSM they can weather anything.

Examples are Climategate along with the contents of and all the vote buying surrounding the Healthcare Bill. All you hear about either is crickets chirping from the MSM. It’s been disgusting.

Five bucks says if there’s another terrorist attack, the response will be to shut down the Internet to prevent folks like us from shattering the “lone nut” card the administration seems to want to play.

When you go through the security check, they have no idea whether you’ve checked luggage or not.

I don’t think these new rules are going to make any difference. You can make rules until the cows come home, and the jihadis will find some way around them. What we need to do is to implement the techniques used by El Al. I haven’t heard of any of their planes being hit by terrorists recently — have you? They rely on profiling, and they flush out potential terrorists with great efficiency.

Political Correctness is not only an infuriating way of controlling speech, it is dangerous and potentially deadly. I wonder how many terrorist bombs it will take to make the powers that be admit it.

If you blow up a plane over the US, or the Pacific, those not killed in the immediate blast get to spend the final seconds of their lives in terror before crashing to earth and perishing.

I’m beginning to wonder if we would ever hear about it if they did search the plane and found evidence of a bomb. Even if we did find out that the man chickened out and flushed the bomb ingredients, Napolitano would take credit for it and say “the system worked as intended and flying is still safe”.

I wouldn’t be surprised if DHS started publishing a count of lives “created or saved” by the DHS since Obama took office. Every passenger who landed safely would be a “life saved”, and every baby born during flight would be a “life created” I suppose. Even if a few planes went down due to terrorism, the count would still be positive and they would take credit for lives saved just like Obama takes credit for jobs saved even when unemployment increases.

I saw the reports on the news this afternoon – first a potential incident, then the more accurate and mundane story of a sick passenger.

Theres no such thing as a coincidence. The guy just happens to be “sick” for a specific period of time at a specific point in a flight which just happens to coincide with an exact other event.

maybe if drugs, weapons and explosives didnt fit up peoples bums, I would be a little more understanding. If I were the sick passenger, and I fit the profile of a guy who just tried to blow up a plane, I would be dang sure everyone knew I couldnt get off the toilet, instead of not responding and then arguing with the crew.

Thats a little biased. Whys it got to be the squirts? Ever tried to pop a blood vessel in your head by straining in an airliner bathroom? Theres no room to maneuver, so it could’ve taken the guy an hour to work through an issue. (no, i havent and the mile high club acrobatics is for the movies too)

However it strikes me as just a bit odd that it was another Nigerian on the same flight as the other guy with a bomb? I agree with whoever suggested maybe he was flushing the evidence down the toilet. Coincidence?

(Do we have to go there?) Because this thread is about a second Nigerian on a Detroit-bound flight behaving abnormally.

If you would like to comment on Iranian protests, then wait for it…or go find one.

“Sharp dressed man” aided Northwest flight “Christmas Bomber” Umar Mutallab onto
plane without passport. Who was involved, why don’t we know about this other
    suspect?

Kurt HaskellKurt Haskell’s boarding pass for NWA Flight 253
A Michigan man who was aboard Northwest Airlines Flight 253 says he witnessed
Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab trying to board the plane in Amsterdam without a
    passport.

Kurt Haskell of Newport, Mich., who posted an earlier comment about his
experience, talked exclusively with MLive.com and confirmed he was on the flight
by sending a picture of his boarding pass. He and his wife, Lori, were returning
from a safari in Uganda when they boarded the NWA flight on Friday.

Haskell said he and his wife were sitting on the ground near their boarding gate
in Amsterdam, which is when they saw Mutallab approach the gate with an
    unidentified man.
Kurt and Lori Haskell are attorneys with Haskell Law Firm in Taylor. Their
expertise includes bankruptcy, family law and estate planning.

While Mutallab was poorly dressed, his friend was dressed in an expensive suit,
Haskell said. He says the suited man asked ticket agents whether Mutallab could
board without a passport. “The guy said, `He’s from Sudan and we do this all the
    time.’”

Mutallab is Nigerian. Haskell believes the man may have been trying to garner
sympathy for Mutallab’s lack of documents by portraying him as a Sudanese
    refugee.
The ticket agent referred Mutallab and his companion to her manager down the
hall, and Haskell didn’t see Mutallab again until after he allegedly tried to
detonate an explosive on the plane.

Haskell said the flight was mostly unremarkable. That was until he heard a
flight attendant say she smelled smoke, just after the pilot announced the plane
would land in Detroit in 10 minutes. Haskell got out of his seat to view the
    brewing commotion.

“I stood up and walked a couple feet ahead to get a closer look, and that’s when
I saw the flames,” said Haskell, who sat about seven rows behind Mutallab. “It
started to spread pretty quickly. It went up the wall, all the way to ceiling.”

Haskell, who described Mutallab as a diminutive man who looks like a teenager,
said about 30 seconds passed between the first mention of smoke and when
Mutallab was subdued by fellow passengers.

“He didn’t fight back at all. This wasn’t a big skirmish,” Haskell said. “A
couple guys jumped on him and hauled him away.”

The ordeal has Haskell and his wife a little shaken. Flight attendants were
screaming during the fire and the pilot sounded notably nervous when bringing
the plane in for a landing, he said.

“Immediately, the pilot came on and said two words: emergency landing,” Haskell
said. “And that was it. The plane sped up instead of slowing down. You could
    tell he floored it.”

As Mutallab was being led out of the plane in handcuffs, Haskell said he
realized that was the same man he saw trying to board the plane in Amsterdam.
Passengers had to wait about 20 minutes before they were allowed to exit the
plane. Haskell said he and other passengers waited about six hours to be
    interviewed by the FBI.

About an hour after landing, Haskell said he saw another man being taken into
custody. But a spokeswoman from the FBI in Detroit said Mutallab was the only
    person taken into custody.

What happened to the well dressed guy that tried to get him on the plane? He
didn’t get on the plane with him but, the guy today was a well dressed guy
suppossedly a business man B^()t it was probably the same guy that tried to get
him on friday. Since his attempt failed the well dressed guy tried again today.

It is NO coincidence that the same exact thing happened 2 days later.

For now, I’m cutting this sick Nigerian some slack. Being on a plane with a gastrointestinal problem can mean several trips to the bathroom, especially if the symptoms are cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting. Plus, once there, you aren’t too interested in leaving. Of course, there are other conditions that would promote a trip to the bathroom, including low blood sugar, and hypotension. So, who knows? It may have just been bad timing; there wouldn’t have been a news story if there was no Xmas bomber.

The Detroit and outer areas have an extremely large muslim population. They actually have call to prayer 5xs a day in Dearborn. It would make sense to do this in a highly concentrated are of muslim to be a martyr

graysonret: He gets NO slack in my book. I would argue that he may have had an “uppy tummy” because he swallowed the ingredients for a bomb inside a condom and was trying to retrieve them. Perhaps said condom ruptured and that is why he was in the bathroom losing his lunch, BOMB.

In my world any muslim who wanted to fly either into or within the U.S. could fly ONLY on Muslim Air, not on ANY American carrier. BTW, Muslim Air would only be equipped with this sort of air vehicle:

    http://www.ipmall.fplc.edu/hosted_resources/calendar/January.html

That way, any attempt to light a match would fail due to the airstream and there would be no luggage, no bathroom, no flight attendants, no crew, they would have to pilot the airplane themselves — Welcome Aboard!

continuing in nail49, the Independent reports that the Nigerian on the Christmas Day attempt had also complained of stomach upset, had gone to the latrine, and then covered himself with a blanket. Given what has happened, it’s not too far fetched to suspect a possible repeat attempt, and maybe the second Nigerian backed out and dropped the gear into the “pretty blue water”. I wonder if anyone thought to sieve the fluid to see if anything harder than excrement was in the latrine waste hold tank?

Right now everyone gets the same treatment at the hands of the TSA — that included Joe Foss, former Gov of SD and WW II recipient of the Medal of Honor which TSA tried to take from him because it “could be used as a weapon.” Why should HE get a hard look, but we can’t even look sideways at someone who has shown ‘all the signs’ of those about to do something?
