Why is Obama still in Hawaii?

Five days after the Christmas Day bomber tried to blow up NWA Flight 253 over Detroit, President Obama is still on vacation in Hawaii. He has delivered two hasty, tie-less statements on homeland security from a makeshift podium in Honolulu whose underwhelming sum impact has been the equivalent of voting “present” (Obama’s career m.o.) By his own admission and in direct contradiction to his hapless DHS Secretary, the president acknowledged yesterday that “systemic failure” led to the breach.
Obama is not scheduled to return to Washington until Sunday. That’s four more full days of reinforcing his image as detached, aloof, and too damned tired to tackle the jihadi epidemic with the once-hyped energy and passion of a 48-year-old Super-Agent of Hope and Change.
Team Obama’s stage managers and image gurus are all about symbolism. Wouldn’t the president send a more credible message to jihadi plotters around the world (and to Americans) by cutting his holiday break short and getting back to work in the White House, rather than by phoning it in for the next four days?
And how many more tropical paradise pow-wows and basketball games with his Chicago cronies Valerie Jarrett, Marty Nesbitt, and Eric Whitaker does he need, anyway?
We’ve gone from “Blood, toil, sweat, and tears” to “Beach, golf, (gym) sweat, and (self-pitying) tears.”
Rough men stand ready to keep and defend our safety. As for President Obama, it’s still Me Time.
***
This Politico piece tries to make hay of the supposedly unfair double standard in how Bush was treated during the shoe bomber attack during Christmas 2001 versus the “heat” that Obama is taking now for remaining on holiday.
A few inconvenient differences and facts that the article glosses over: Bush had been working non-stop since September 11 on homeland security issues and had the public’s trust. The attacks consumed him. By contrast, the current Democratic majority and White House have been working non-stop to lower our defenses and speed the jihadi revolving door.
In December 2001, Bush had not yet amassed his lousy record on Katrina, Harriet Miers, Dubai Ports, shamnesty, and the massive bailouts (all of which have been lambasted extensively on this website and in my columns over the last four years). In December 2009, Obama has already amassed enough Culture of Corruption material to fill an encyclopedia set.
And unlike the low-key Bush, President Obama has been a shameless, consummate TV hog from Day One — willing to turn anything and everything, including a race-baiting tiff between his good friend Professor Henry Louis Gates and Cambridge MA police — into a global “teachable moment” of “unprecedented” proportions. When he doesn’t rush to address Americans after a matter of real import strikes, “heat” — no matter how hypocritical his supporters may paint it – is entirely appropriate.

What, exactly, tangibly has he not done that you think he needs to do, that he cannot do from Hawaii? Or are you all just going to glom onto this “symbolic gesture to terrorists” nonsense?
Don’t be absurd. The attack failed. The plane landed. The only one seriously injured was the terrorist. That is a different thing from saying that there wasn’t, as Obama put it, a “systemic failure” that allowed the guy to get on the plane in the first place. Saying one failed is not saying the other did not.
Chap, when it comes to the President and the world stage, appearances mean a bunch! As a lawyer, you should know it’s about presentation as much as substance!
As far as the terrorist attack, it failed only in death, but the act did not fail to terrorize. You could ask any passenger on that plane. If you were on that plane, I believe you would experience an epiphany.
And if I were on that plane, I, along with everyone else, would be alive to experience it. Which is my point. If you want to argue the semantics of the word “succeed” or “fail” in this context, go right ahead. I’ll bet if you asked the terrorist if he defined “success” as “the only casualties will be my gonads” he would say no.
Wow! Deja Vu all over again!
And curiously, the only criticism I have seen of Obama’s appearances in this matter are people that already have a huge axe to grind. Forgive me if I question the motives.
Perhaps. But I have no doubt you aspire to higher levels of discourse than the radical left.
Typical liberal, only concerned with talking to the terrorists, not the victims.
What is the purpose of terrorism? Is it only to kill?
No. It is also to disrupt and cause overreaction. So, based on the responses here, I guess it was at least minimally a success.
But you are right. A victim’s definition of success should be considered. I wonder if someone on United 93 or American 11 would consider Delta 253 a successful attack.
Perhaps he’s taking this time trying to figure out how to show more empathy when he speaks. That way, when his fact finding investigation finds out exactly which one of our policies the terrorists find offensive, he can sincerely apologize for it.
Another Obama measured repsonse may be to bow to the Nigerian when he explains to him how much his new Obamacare health plan will cover the expense of the skin grafts of the poor bugger’s generals!
repsonse = response (slap!)
Answering the question, “Why is Obama still in Hawaii?
1) To Surf Pipeline on the North Shore?
2) To play a few more rounds fo golf?
3) To check out the chicks on the beach at Wai ki ki?
4) To listen to Danny Couch sing at Chaio’s Island Bistro?
5) Negotiating a real estate deal for Iolani Palace?
6) He wants to star in a remake of “Hawaii Five O”? “Book ‘em, Rahmi!”
7) Because he is underqualified to serve as President of the United States of America and He is avoiding his responsibilities that are way over His head?
9) Because he is planning to surrender the Hawaiian Islands to Islam?
Why is Obama remaining in Oahu, Hawaiia still?
10) Because He can?
Regarding that Nigerian terrorist, Jihadi underwear bomber,
In the worlds of of Miss Paris Hilton,
“Gosh, he’s hot!”
(grin)
I think it’s high time to not be nice!
Rogue Cheddar,
Don’t you feel any sympathy for this poor underwear bomber? (Was he wearing Fruit of the Loom, or Hanes?)
How embarassing! (Did he poopy his underwear also? That would be doubley embarrasing. Stinky pooh!)
He fried himself, got his ass handed to him by what is described as a large, strong, powerful looking Dane, and he never got to go to Heaven. (A single “Infidel” took him down. Ha! Ha! Ha! Go back to training camp, Jihadi weakling!)
He is probably upset that he did not get to Heaven to boink his 72 Virgins! (Would he even want to copulate with them, or is he, well, does he play for the “other” team to begin with? As in, he likes boys, not girls?)
Do you think that those Jihadis who want to go to Heaven to “do” their 72 Virgins are really depressed individuals who don’t know how to treat a woman here on earth, which is why they think they have a better chance when the get to Heaven, taking the violent, Jihadi route? (Do they want to engage in relations with the “virgins” or do they want to visit hate filled misogynist tendencies upon them, beat them, push them around, abuse them, blow them up, stone them, treat them like crap like many of them have been known to do here on earth where the Infidels also live, etc.?
What if they get to Heaven after their dastardly deed of terrorism and murder and discover that there are no 72 Virgins waiting for them, but that those Islamic Jihadi leaders were lying all along, and, instead they are burning hot forever, chased by creature with razor sharp claws and teeth, that it stinks so badly that the stench makes the vomit 24/7, and that the razor clawed creatures rip them to pieces 24/7 forever while they are also burning in extremly hot flames 24/7 forever?
What if they get there and there are 72 virgins, but it is Hell and the virgins in Hell are part of the tortures of Hell for the likes of those crazy, violent, hate filled, blood and death cult following Jihadis.
“Hi, Ahkmed. I see you’ve killed yourself so you could come here and be with us, we 72 Virgins. Guess what. You can only look, but you can’t touch. Besides, we aren’t made like a real woman. The place that real women have where you want to put that thing (vagina) you fried isn’t there for us. We don’t have one of those, and/or it has razor blades to slice you up, burn you, and make life a living hell for you “down there”. Besides, we keep these head to toe covering burkas on 24/7 so you not only can’t touch, and if you do you suffer Hell, you cannot even see us or appreciate us. Also we are uglier than a camel’s rectum, so there! A lot of good it did you to engage in your violent Jihad, Ahmed, or Rufus, or Bobby, or whatever you name is!
Welcome to Hell! We are your 72 Virgins!”
Sounds like an airline slogan of some sort.
Not exactly. It is to disrupt and cause misdirected and poorly thought out reactions. That may include misdirected and poorly thought out ‘overreactions.’
Terrorism doesn’t work very well when the governments of the targets react by actually hunting down and killing the terror masters, even if it is an ‘overreaction’ that kills one heck of a lot more people than just the terror masters.
For example: We clearly ‘overreacted’ after the terror attack on Pearl Harbor. The Japanese were dumbfounded at the ferocity and determination and of our response and our unwillingness to settle for anything less than wiping the Japanese Empire off the face of the map.
Well after FDR went on vacation…
AH……. would anyone like to explain to me why every terrorist camp in Yemen and Somalia has not been turned into a smoking hole by now?
Given our Leader it is a rhetorical quaetion, but wanted to ask anyway.
I know how we can make him feel better! He can replace Charlie Sheen in the next Michael Jordan underwear commercial!
“Nothing relieves the pain, like Hanes!”
oh ! Oh ! I know!!
because it would remind him too much of what goes on in his own boudoir?

You may be thinking of CDRPACFLT which is located at Makalapa on Pearl Harbor. These are the offices that ADM King occupied till shortly after 7 December 1941.
When Ronald Reagan visited Hawaii, he stayed at the Kahala Hilton and was briefed in one of the conference rooms there by ADM Crowe. Likewise, I understand most Presidents who stopped over on their way to the Far East.
Since I understand He’s staying in Kailua on the island of Oahu, he may either be taking his briefings in his rented estate or at the Kaneohe Marine Corps Station (formerly Kaneohe Marine Corps Air Station). Both Makalapa and Camp Smith being over 30 minutes by car from his current residence.
Chap,
I have no criticism of The President because the attack took place. No matter what we do, there will be times that the bad guys will be able to pull off an attack.
What is telling and why I am critical is the RESPONSE, if you call it that. Napalitano damned herself with her own statements. If you can defend her, you can defend the Manson Family. The Preseident’s staff, who woke him in the dead of night to tell him he won the Nobel Prize waited THREE HOURS to inform him.
The assumed this was an isolated attack. After 9/11? Defend that!
In the first statement from the President’s staff they blamed the procedures put in place by the BUSH Administration. How lame is that? The White House either thought the procedures were just fine or was too lazy to improve them over the last eleven months.
That is the kind of reaction I expect from a six year old that just broke my favorite lawn chair.
Then our esteemed Leader waits three DAYS to put out a statement that again proved the he is in denial that he is in a war facing an ruthless enemy.
Finally, an enemy combatant who is from an organization that has declared war on the U.S. wearing no uniform and no ID, comes from outside the U.S. to attack 295 NON COMBATANTS over U.S. soil. The reaction? He is now being afforded more civil rights than three Navy SEAL’s charged with giving a terrorists who burned four Americans alive and strung unp their chared corpses.
If you want to question my motives, knock yourself out.
Zel Miller nailed. We have two kinds of people; the warriors and the wimps.
Good info. I might also add that calling in stikes from there will reduce the President’s carbon footprint.
Nothing better than an environmentally responsible anti-terrorist operation.
oooooooooooooooooooooooooh
TOO MUCH INFORMATION.
I do. Bush did not make a statement on the shoe bomber until 6 days afterward. And then it was only in passing when I believe he was questioned specifically on it.
Malkin brings up trivial and inconsequential “differences” to justify the right’s silence wrt Bush with the screeching rhetoric wrt Obama for what is as close to the exact same situation (attempted bombing of an airliner, president on vacation at the time…) as one could reasonably expect to mask what is clearly no more substantial than bald hatred of Obama.
And then when the President does make a statement Malkin employs amateurish, self-serving, pop psychoanalysis of Obama to assure us all that, no matter what he actually said it was perfunctory and insincere.
Now THAT is what I would expect of a six year old.
Again, the difference in reaction from the Right between the fact that Richard Reid was given the exact same kind of trial and treatment and rights that this guy is gonna get belies any sincerity of principle and exposes these so called “criticisms” for what they are: blatant and rank partisanship.
The attempted bomber was wearing “Fruit of the Boom” underwear, but they were duds.
Reminds me of an old Jerry Lee Lewis song:
GOODNESS GRACIOUS, GREAT BALLS Ah’ FIRE!
In fewest words Chap, you ASSUME that I supported Bush’s reaction and how Reid was prosecuted.
Reid, like the Nazi saboteurs caught in 1942, should have been executed within 45 days of capture after being tried by a military tribunal. KSM and probably 25 others in Gitmo should have been dispatched in a similar manner at least seven years ago.
Further, I have opposed every release from Gitmo to anywhere, unless it was shown that the people in question had no business being there. There have been some people caught up in the “fog of war.” That happens.
Bush released Bin Laden’s driver! ! !
If I were the the President on 9/12 I would have avoided the mistakes made by every President since FDR. I would have asked for a Declaration of War against Al Queada and anyone providing them aid and comfort. THAT IS THE MISSING CLARITY.
Every weasel in Washington would have been made to put up or shut up. There would be no question regarding the status of KSM, Richard Reid or any other of these dirt bags.
And yes Chap, I blame Bush for that.
For one thing, he could be in DC giving the Navy the official Okay-doakey for the heads of about 300 Tangos, in Yemen.
Dollars to doughnuts he can do that right from the comfort of wherever he is staying in Hawaii.
From what I can tell after years of reading Michelle’s blog, she is one of THE most even-handed pundits on the scene today. HuffPo et al can’t even begin to compare.
This witness is absolutely true. Michelle has distinguished herself by being willing to call “her side” to task without hesitation. Kudos to her…
Wouldn’t matter if he did.
Being the son of a non-US Citizen disqualifies any man of holding the office of President of the United States, regardless of the place of birth.

Chap, you are correct and I am of the opinion that the President returning to Washington would send the wrong message.
If there were things that needed to be done in D.C., the President should and I believe would return.
The people involved in our response are where they need to be.
Have you ever heard him speak?
But he won’t cause he was born in Kenya.
Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!!!!!
Ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho!
That was great, Bob!
Very clever.
As Paris Hilton says (Here I am relating this to the “underwear bomber”) “He’s hot!”
I can hear Dave Morrison and the Doors, or even Jose Feliciano, playing inside my head “Light My Fire.”
Or even “Burn, Baby Burn, Disco Inferno” from the Tramps.
Just to name a few.
Bob,
Maybe Obama and his administration, seeing as they are so Progressive in their thinking, so “wise,” so “nuanced,” and so much superior than dumb Conservatives and Security, Strong Military types, will give the “Underwear bomber” a gift certificate to Victoria’s Secret, so he/she/it can purchase some nice lingerie for him/her/itself and try again.
I second that motion, Major O.
That is one of the big reasons I like Michelle Malkin.
She is even handed. She will get Teed off over RINOS, and others, as she will with Leftists, Radicals, Fifth Columnists, Liberals, self described “Progressives,” (which can and does occasionally mean “Perverts” and deviates.), Democrats, Socialists, Communists, etc.
Furthermore, although her detractors try to deceive, she clearly researches her information and supports it with facts, is honest, fair, and strong willed.
She has put up with that bad behavior that comes from elitists, leftists, etc., and all those offensive personal attacks, sexual torture emails, “You don’t know your rightful place” comments on her “Asian-Oriental-Minority” ancestry (You see, if she is not a white male and she is Conservative, then her mind ain’t right (Cool Hand Luke reference)).
My wife is Asian. I am of mixed ancestry. Many men and women who are black, Hispanic, Asian-Oriental, etc., and who are Conservative are attacked BECAUSE they are black, Hispanic, Asian-Oriental, etc., in the context that she should know better, and that they must all be of one mind, the “minority” mind, which means, leftists, liberals, racists, grievance mongers, etc.
Michelle, and my wife, and so many others, don’t buy the poison cool aide and think clearly. They are right, and the others are wrong.
The leftists are showing themselves to be racist, hate mongering, mindless, brainless wonders.
Recently the University of California system, made of nine campuses, was trying to reduce the number of Asian-Oriental students. The complaint was that there should be more diversity on campus and the Asian-Oriental student population, collectively, throughout all nine campuses, amounts to approximately 25%.
We can’t have that, now, can we?
No.
There should be “diversity” in the education experience, meaning that the person sitting next to you and behind you and before you in class should be “different” from you.
What does that mean?
If the student next to me is Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Laotian, Korean, Japanese, Okinawan, Indian, Pakistani, Sri Lankan, etc., then does that mean they shouldn’t be there because that cuts into my education and reduces my “Diversity experience?”
Those students EARN there way into college, outperform all other ethnic groups in scholastic achievement, and also in college entrance to graduation rates, and have a better employment record and credit and bill payment history, as a group, than any other group.
So, the Asian-Oriental students are only 25% of the total student population throughout the nine campuses of UC, but they must have their numbers reduced because there should be more “diveristy.”
Who is supposed to replace them?
Under achieving Hispanics?
Under achieving Whites?
Under achieving Blacks?
Why should those who are not working as hard, are not as dedicated, and who are not as bright and who have not achieved as the Asians-Orientals have, be rewarded by being placed in line ahead of a student who actually earned their place and who really DOES deserve to be there?
This is not the only time Asians-Orientals have been the target of reverse discrimination and racism.
Who pushes this stuff?
Are there some black racists out there who look for stuff like this to complain about?
Are there Hispanic racists out there who go looking for stuff to complain about?
Are there white Liberal-Radical-Leftists who HAVE to find something to complain about and a group to target for discrimination, racism, hatred, etc., so that blacks, Hispanics, etc., can feel okay, and so they can make blacks and Hispanics feel good?
Gee!!!!
When my wife and her fellow students at her all-girls public High School in a major US City went to apply for US Federal Grants for “Minorities” they were turned away, told they did not qualify as a “Minority.”
My wife and her friends found a way to get into college. They worked while attending college, did not party too much, if at all, but studied instead.
They have degrees now, many are married with children, and are leading good lives.
How about the Grievance mongers, the bean counters, the racists who discriminate against Asians-Orientals, and even the White Conservative male, and even white conservative females?
They are rewarded for their behavior time and time again, at the expense of their victims-targets, and in violation of the equal protections clause found the Constitution of the United States of America!
So,
Major O,
Yes, Michelle Malkin is a fair, even handed pundit, Commentary author, etc., and I for one am glad she is out there doing her thing.
As Rush Limbaugh used to say (and I think, still says) “I am balance,” Michelle, and others, offer balance in contrast to the sellout, radical, leftist, liberal, dishonest, phone in their article, unresearched and full of crap, media.
Take care,
I hope you have a wonderful New Year

Personally, I would prefer a couple of twelve man teams inserted into Yemen, made up of several sniper teams and instead of blowing up a camp and missing the real targets (cruise missles are comparatively slow) in a Clintonesque show raid, inflict real terror on the terrorists by taking their leaders out courtesy of Mr. Barrett and his wonderful rifles.
Not as flashy or appealing to Westerners with their technology fetish but far more effective on as we will actually eliminate key people and most of the training doesn’t occur in what you might think of as a ‘training camp’ per se. They’ve learned and evolved since the days of ‘camps’ in Libya and Afghanistan. Today’s jihadi maybe ‘trained’ in a private residence, or neighborhood or even in a hotel room before being sent to an operation or unit. But, the jihadis will understand a single bullet, see what it can do, and will fear this more than any bomb or missile an infidel dibjuk can send.
William, I’m glad you thought my post was funny.
Your post about Asians, diversity, etc. was right on.
Happy New Year!!
I suppose, but I have always been a “take out the whole grid square” kind of guy. Special Ops can do the BDA and pick off the survivors.
Bob,
Thanks for the feedback!
Yes, I actually laughed when I read your post. It caught me by surprise.
Very funny!
I made the mistake of calling “Jim Morrison” of the Doors rock group “Dave Morrison.”
I’ll just chalk that up to being human and leave it at that.
They say that Gingko Biloba helps with one’s memory.
I’d use it if I could only remember to take it!

I have a friend who used to fly Buffs that thinks like that too. But over the course of several months of teaching NRA courses under his tutelage and letting the kids use some of my ‘neat stuff’ he’s come around to my idea. Of course he’s also old enough to remember a time that BDAs consisted of counting dead waterbulls and multiplying by four to get the enemy KIAs because even an Arclight strike wasn’t faster than radio waves. A touch gory but maybe this will underscore how effective this can be. So why not get the leaders and if there are targets worth wasting a bomb or missile on, then use them.
Besides, maybe they’d re-cycle an old guy like me to spot for one of the teams.
I have a similar friend and being a former 11B I understand youur orientation. I’d go with you.
But consider new technology. Your basic formation of three B52′s (or B1 or B2) each carrying their 50,000 pound bomb load. All the bombs are JDAMS so they will go to a predesignated spot. You can map a predetermined PK 100 on the target area.
I am also sure you can have some kind of cluster munition. Now throw in a simultaneous drop which results in a catastrophic TOT.
That is an attention getter.

While we don’t get more than a single Buff or B1 or B2 anymore (too few left?)
We’ve actually used the method a time or two to cover up how a high value target met his maker. If you’ve got a high value target near some kind of infrastructure worth taking, it can work out. If you’re just going after one high value target in a car full of targets, or a house or residence. the bomber is kind of redundant and too likely to kill civilians nearby. Besides, have you ever seen the look on Hajji’s face when a fellow next to him has his chest/head explode and several seconds later hears the flat crack (M-21/24) or the boom (M82A1/M107A1)? It’s truly a Mastercard moment. I rather think it makes them consider a new career not to mention a religion of peace and contemplation.
Having commanded scout snipers, I could not agree more.
Oh, so, because the plane didn’t land in a thousand pieces it failed? You sir are the absurd one.
Terrorist (as you rightly called him) had a bomb strapped to him. – check
Terrorist boarded a plane undetected – check.
Terrorist successfully ignited bomb on plane – check
Bomb went off – check
Bomb didn’t detonate as planned so, by your standard, it was a failed mission? No, according to you the idea that people call it a terrorist attack is the victory for the terrorists. THAT is just absurd. The victory is in knowing the terrorists succeeded in having half the country think it is a failed mission. I can think of nothing more they would love us to think. The terrorists claim success and the USA claims they blew it big time. The fact the bomb did not destroy the plane and kill all of the people is moot. Most of us know it was just dumb luck or an act of god that kept the plane from being destroyed. Of course, a lawyer’s idea of success is getting a retainer and doing nothing for it but getting fired.
Unlike Chappy, I was. He stayed in a place where he was secure while the Secret Service made arrangements to get him out of there and to Air Force One which, of course, takes a few minutes. President Bush didn’t panic, refused to jump up and announce to a bunch of children that America had just been attacked which would have scared the Hell out of them to no purpose, and took his leave calmly in good order.
It amazes me everytime someone on the left points at those few minutes President Bush remained reading to those children as “proof” that he didn’t understand the magnitude of the 9/11 attacks. Would they have jumped up and self-importantly demanded that his security detail “Get me out of here right this minute?”
“What did you do when America was attacked on 9/11, Mr. President Chappy?”
“I ran out of the Elementary School and got stuck in traffic, little girl.”
Geez.
ECS
Bush reacted just like the trained figher pilot that he was.
Just wanted to add that little caveat in hopes it will cause blood to shoot out of the eyes of every lib reading it.
Barry had to wait three hours to get notified so Rahm could figure out any possible way to not waste the crisis.
He wants to be there for a friend. How can you ask him to leave Hawaii and abandon his old buddy Rush in his hour of need? Obama will not
restwork until Rush is out of danger. The fact that the plane did not blow up, killing hundreds of people is “moot”. That is your argument?
Thank you. I rest my case.
oh. And Bush was a deer caught in the headlights at 9:06 am on September 11. To pretend anything else is delusional.
One more thing, soap, by your logic, if we think they failed, they win. So…if we think they won, they failed?
And I am the absurd one?
What does he need to do? HE NEEDS TO FIRE JANET NEPALITANO Holy smoke what do you need, mushroom clouds and glowing craters where NYC, DC, Chicago, Denver, and LA used to be?
For years after Abdul Raheem tried to detonate a shoe bomb our skies have been safe – a legacy that Obama never once complained about (unlike anything else he could possibly think up to blame on Bush). But with one stroke of the pen he appointed a babbling moron to head the DHS and destroyed any security we gained in the previous 8 years. Instead of maintaining the security of the nation she’s focused on rousting patriots, veterans and Christians in a twisted witch hunt that apparently has been directed at anyone who knows what the Constitution actually says.
To listen to the left whine that Obama actually getting off his a$$ and doing the job he was elected to do would just be symbolic is beyond sickening. These left wing liars and hypocrites cry like infants sitting in a loaded diaper when a republican fails to show the “caring” and “Concern” they come to demand from the nanny state for the slightest offense to their delicate sensibilities. But when THEIR drooling fool can barely be bothered to acknowledge the attempted murder of hundreds of citizens through his own fault and incompetence everything’s just cool with them.
Disgusting

Ah M. Chapoutier, I’ve not had a chance to comment on the innovations of your namesake’s wineries. Be that as it may, I too was caught like a deer in the headlamps on 11 September 2001. So I think was most of the country that day. At about 5:48 AM Pacific Time, I was on leave, I’d just turned on KTLA news after my morning PT. At first it was reported as a fire in the World Trade Center. About 15 minutes later a television cameraman covering the “fire” points his camera to the on-coming flight 175 as it crashes into the second tower. I was on the phone talking to someone at the Pentagon about my next assignment. We were actually chatting about the “strange” crash when he told me that he had to evacuate.
I remember being very confused at that moment and it took awhile to assimilate what I was seeing on the television, what had happened in my phone conversation and everything else, by that time, the towers began to fail, again I stood there slack jawed and surprised.
That was the reaction of a trained and allegedly ‘battle hardened’ Soldier on that day. I can definitely forgive President Bush for no less reaction than he displayed that day when his National Security advisor told him a ‘small engine plane’ then a minute later, a ‘twin engine plane’ and finally a ‘commercial aircraft’.
But some eight years three months later when we’ve been at war for all those years. I’m no longer surprised by enemy terror tactics because that’s what they initiated this war with. Surprise at another terror incident whether you call it ‘attempted’ or what have you. I’d expect several things from Mr. Obama and his staff.
1.) Calm and deliberate analysis of the terrorist incident. Concentrating on improving both security at airports and how to better coordinate intelligence with that security system (oh and that means not investigating bloggers who publish information that has been sent to every airline and country in the world.
2.) A firm and reassuring statement to the public that the people who trained this terrorist would answer for even the smallest attempt on American civilians now and in the future.
3.) Actions that are commensurate with 1 and 2 above.
Unlike 11 September 2001 this isn’t happening as a first by any means. So, maybe I’m mistaken, but I expect a different reaction when its the fourth time this year we’ve had a serious terrorist attack regardless of success of the attack itself and the eighth such in the eight years three months since the initial attack on 11 Sept. 2001. What I expect is a trained and coordinated response and not the clowns and jokers routine I’ve seen so far. I expect realistic and effective changes to interdict the next attack. And I don’t mean keeping incontinent old men or women out of the loo an hour before landing or forbidding blankets and pillows at the same time frame.
Why since we’ve known about the PETN/TATP explosive that Abdulmatallub used for five years haven’t we come up with a way to screen for it? What happened to extra scrutiny for people with no luggage or one-way tickets?
I don’t know what others may be upset about, but that’s my beef with Mr. Obama et alia.
Politico ought to take a good look back on the double standards favoring Obama over Bush on just about EVERYTHING.
Chap, you remind me of one of those mindless parents who sits in he stands at HS football games and thinks they are Vince Lombardi.
First and foremeost you have never received a message like that. Trust me the look on Bush’s face is how you look. A thousand things are going through your mind and you stare, because you are focused on your responsibilities. The you respond, which he did.
It is what a leader does.
You are a true Leftist. Because Bush may not have been perfect in your execptations he is totally flawed with no good traits whatsoever. If you want to search for delusional behavior look no further than that reaction.
When Obama’s bad guy body count exceeds President Bush’s, I will start to respect him. I do not want to set a good example for the world. I want this death loving enemy to get his wish.
I am beginning to think that those on the far left that continue to defend Obama are suffering from ODS (Obama Derangement Syndrome) and are protecting him at any cost without evaluating the merits and errors of his actions.
I truly feel that his support for the monstrosity we call Obamacare are based on good intentions. However, I also feel that his inability to take control of the actions of his cabinet can only be attributed to inexperience.
We need not only a change in ideas but the ability to lead and make decision that ensure the American public that the right persons (executive & legislative branches of gov) is in charge of our physical and financial well being.
I do not debate the fact that Obama has the means to control the response to the terror attempt from his vacation house in Hawaii but when his spokesclown unravels the little faith on issues of national security we had in his administration he needed to step up and fly back to DC, fire Janet Napolitano and lead a root cause analysis of this epic failure.
I travel more often that most and see first hand how there is need for much improvement in our nations security efforts. The TSA brags that no attacks had occurred I say not because of their diligence but because of the terrorists lack of trying.
I will repeat my statement from the original “System worked” thread
If Obama does not immediately fire Janet Napolitano, we must begin impeachment proceedings.
Since impeachment would be based on a high crime or misdemeanor what would you charge him with? Stupidity is not a crime.
Obama is a disaster, but each side clamoring for impeachment at the drop of a hat whenever the other side gets in has got to stop.
It does the Republic no good.
I’d go with him being an imposter, literally a usurper of the highest elected office in the USA……spread the evidence, the evidence is plentiful. Stop being afraid of the issue.
If this ball ever got rolling it would remove him from office, and render his minions unable to do futher damage to our country.
Yes, I may be dreaming, but my personal opinion is; I am 100% sure he isn’t Constitutionally eligible to be POTUS.
Call me a “birther” if you want….no problem.
What a silly silly standard to claim. Its like saying the pitcher that gave up 7 runs in the first inning, but none for the next 8 innings pitched a shutout
Not true at all. I think Bush did a number of admirable things while in office, as any fair minded person would. In any case, ssnark described it better than I could above. One could be forgiven for being a deer caught in the headlights, certainly, but lets not pretend he wasn’t.
oops hit send before I finished my baseball analogy.
As I was saying…” but none for the next 8 innings pitched a shutout. If you want to use that standard consistently, then you shouldn’t focus on the attempted attack last Thursday, but rather on the fact that Obama has kept the skies safe for six days and counting.
If only the Constitution was in less peril. Happy New Year (hic!)
To you and yours as well, Rogue. I won’t be sad to see the end of 2009, so we probably have that in common.
Good – so no matter what happens to the economy, you won’t make the claim that Obama “fixed” it, since everyone’s Grandchildren will still be paying interest on the massive debt he has run up.
Not quite sure that fits the analogy…but in any case, I have never said Obama fixed the economy. Only that he will be able to claim he did.
Happy New Year to everyone out in the Hawaiian Aleutian Time Zone. Sorry you guys have to wait so much longer than the rest of us.
I would like to take this opportunity to say that William’s post rocked
Kinda reminded me of the first 5 minutes of the movie “Postal”. Ouch.
