Hope and Change in 2010: Democrat Sen. Dorgan to retire

By Michelle Malkin  •  January 5, 2010 07:11 PM

DLTDHYOTWO!*

Democrat Sen. Byron Dorgan sees the writing on the wall:

“For the past year, I have been making plans to seek another six-year Senate term in next year’s election. Those plans included raising campaign funds and doing the organizing necessary to wage a successful campaign.

“Even as I have done that, in recent months I began to wrestle with the question of whether making a commitment to serve in the Senate seven more years (next year plus a new six-year term) was the right thing to do.

“I have been serving as an elected official in our state for many years. Beginning at age 26, I served ten years as State Tax Commissioner followed by thirty years in the U.S. Congress by the end of 2010. It has been a long and wonderful career made possible by the people of North Dakota. And I am forever grateful to them for the opportunity.

“Although I still have a passion for public service and enjoy my work in the Senate, I have other interests and I have other things I would like to pursue outside of public life. I have written two books and have an invitation from a publisher to write two more books. I would like to do some teaching and would also like to work on energy policy in the private sector.

“So, over this holiday season, I have come to the conclusion, with the support of my family, that I will not be seeking another term in the U.S. Senate in 2010. It is a hard decision to make after thirty years in the Congress, but I believe it is the right time for me to pursue these other interests.

“Let me be clear that this decision does not relate to any dissatisfaction that I have about serving in the Senate.

Indeed, it has much more to do with the dissatisfaction that his constituents have with him serving in the Senate — not the other way around.

*Don’t Let The Door Hit You On The Way Out.

***

Kim Priestap calls Dorgan out:

Dorgan faces almost certain defeat if Republican Governor John Hoeven runs against him. According to Rasmussen’s latest poll on December 21, Hoeven would trounce Dorgan, 58% to 36%. Health care is a huge problem for the senator, as a whopping 64% of North Dakotans don’t want what Dorgan is voting to give them.

What a schmuck Dorgan is. Rather than doing what his constituents want him to do and vote against the Democrats’ health care catastrophe, he’s going to vote for it anyway and then retire and enjoy the government’s fat pension and high quality health care, all funded by the US taxpayer. What a freaking coward.

Dorgan knows that the USA is headed for disaster and he wants to be able to say that it didn’t happen on his watch. He hopes that the fact that he is a principle instigator of the disaster will be long forgotten and that he can hide from his responsibility. My hope is that he is held to account by his citizen peers and that his life in retirement is less than comfortable. Every one of these progressive senators and representatives needs to live with the knowledge that their peers despise them.

In ancient Greece, the punishment for such despicable actions against the democratic wishes of the citizenry was banishment. It is a real shame that we don’t have such a punishment.

Good ol AP, blogging for democrats again.

They released this story about a half hour ago, then updated it slightly once Pomeroy could come up with a semi-coherent statement sucking up, and getting his name out there for a possible run to win Dorgan’s Senate seat.

The only difference between the initial AP story and the current version is:

In a statement, Pomeroy praised Dorgan’s long service to North Dakota and the nation. “His extraordinary influence in the United States Senate, particularly as a senior member of the Appropriations Committee, will be sorely missed in North Dakota,” Pomeroy said.

And as usual, no indication that the story has been updated/corrected.

“Michelle and I extend our gratitude for his service to our nation and our very best wishes for the future for him and his family,” Obama said in a statement.

It’s young people like you for whom it’s worse. If you don’t want to buy healthcare, you’ll get fined. If you do buy it, you’ll be subsidizing old farts like me since the Senate healthcare bill says insurance companies can’t charge me more than 3 times what you’ll pay and the House bill says they can’t charge me more than twice what you pay.

I’ve already retired once, so an amnesty won’t hurt me as much as it does you because your taxes will have to increase to support the “new Democrat voters” who will flood over the border.

You young Democratic Party supporters are cutting your own throats.

    “You Guys”???

Is “you guys” referring to the people of ND….you know…the state he supposedly represents….the state where it looks like about 2/3 of the residents are ready to boot him out?

Or is “you guys” referring to conservatives in general?

Either way it’s a “f**k you” kind of statement to make. What is it with you Libs?!? You are essentially saying “yeah, he’s not doing his job (representing those who’ve elected him in the past), but who cares? Too bad for “you guys” whe are getting the shaft by a POS senator that is only interested in his power”.

I guess when public opinion is in your favor, you claim to “represent the people”, but when it’s not, you are “speaking truth to power”?!? Is that your rationale??

I really don’t think you’re in any position to judge what qualifies me as a “contemptible” person. Perhaps, that’s your huge ego or active paranoia at work. Who’s to say?

I think the use of salacious hyperbole, Chaps, has a tendency to make your insight a little more cloudy. Then again, I’m not sure one has much in the way of “insight” into any issue when the only thing they find useful in a blog exchange is the use of personal invective such as “contemptible.”

No, no….what you say in this instance not only lacks clarity but any meaning. Calling another person contemptible is what one does when they no longer have insight to offer.

The problem with Dorgan in NoDak, like Conrad also from NoDak is that they are “stealth” leftists. Others like them are Feingold here in Wisconsin.

They talk about helping farmers, may have the Farm Bureau advocate on their behalf if the Senator brings home the subsidies (not difficult for that to get passed) and act as if they remember what it’s like to live in the state.

In Washington, they change like from Jekyll to Hyde and come out of the closet as raving leftists.

Not much is said back home about the leftist drivel they support, so voters may not be aware of how raving they have become.

Dorgan rose to the point it couldn’t be hidden any longer. Conrad? Well, his time is coming as well. Feingold? Who knows. As long as they have the support of the leftists in the major cities, they can still squeak back into office.

Dorgan? Well, the cats out of the bag so I doubt anything would have helped him.

Hopefully the cat will be out of the bag in many other states where these closet leftists are from.
