The new revolt against Demcare: State opt-out initiatives

By Michelle Malkin  •  January 19, 2010 07:34 PM

Some taxpayers aren’t waiting for the results of the Massachusetts election to take action against the federal health care power grab.

Today in Denver, activists unveiled a new state initiative effort to protect Coloradans from the Demcare individual insurance mandate. Jon Caldara of the Independence Institute spearheaded the rally to “Free Our Health Care.” The People’s Press Collective has photos, video, and full coverage of the event and ballot measure.

The idea is spreading across the country:

Lawmakers in 30 states are pressing for constitutional amendments to exempt individuals from the requirement to purchase health care, a pivotal piece of the legislation under debate in Congress.

In Colorado, organizers of a proposed ballot measure filed language with the state elections office Friday. They would like the state legislature to place the amendment on the ballot, but given that both houses are controlled by Democrats, that’s unlikely.

“I want Colorado to become a sanctuary state for good health care,” said Jon Caldara, president of the Independence Institute, who is leading the ballot effort. “People are angry, and rightfully so. If the legislature’s not going to step up and do something, then we’re going to have to.”

…Nineteen states have filed or pre-filed legislation using the organization’s legislative language, known as the Freedom of Choice in Health Care Act, said Christie Herrera, ALEC’s director of health and human services task force. Ten others have announced their intent to introduce similar bills this session.

“It’s all about preserving the right of people to choose health care for themselves,” said Ms. Herrera.

When politicians won’t protect their constituents, D.I.Y.: Do it yourselves.

I would love to see the states push the issue and repel how far the federal government can intrude in our lives.

Alas, I don’t see it going very far.

Hence the sudden call by Barney Frank, Michael Dukakis and others today to eliminate the Senate 60-vote requirement ASAP. Having to be accountable to the electorate is deemed as rendering the process unmanageable by our entrenched criminal class of elected weasels.

There is only one way to make the system better: make government smaller and less complicated. I don’t ever want to hear the word “comprehensive” again.

BarryO’s got his work cut out for him. We had a 10th Amendment Revolution Rally/Lobby Day for the start of the VA legislature in Richmond yesterday.

We had low estimates of 1,000 to highs of 2,500! People have learned their history, too. Members of the crowd were chanting along with the Patrick Henry re-enactor when he gave his famous speech and quoted from the Constitution.

The two main issues for VA this year are restoring gun laws chipped away by our new ex-gov Tim Kaine and nullifying Obamacare if it passes.

Legislators said this was the biggest turnout they had ever seen for Lobby Day and said they heard us while sitting in their offices!

I know that here in missouri there is some opt out talk, because our dem gubnah just was railing about how missouri would lose out on all that gubmint cheese if we opted out. last week judge napolitano did a great 5 part story of our gubmint, and how it is turning into a socialist quagmire because the federal gubmint takes or bribes states powers away from them.
