Deficit Kabuki theater: Democrats act like they care about debt

After engaging in mind-boggling acts of non-stop generational theft over the past year and blowing through the debt ceiling during the Christmas holiday, the White House and Democrat majority have unveiled a phony plan to “solve” the red-ink disaster they helped create by kicking the can to a toothless panel.
GOP Sen. Judd Gregg calls it a “nothing burger.”
From crap sandwiches to crap burgers:
Republicans on Wednesday branded the White House deal with Democrats on a budget deficit commission as a “nothing burger” because it wouldn’t require votes on how to stem the red ink.
A tentative agreement would let President Barack Obama name the 18-member bipartisan commission. It would seek a compromise on the tax increases and spending cuts needed to tackle the deficit, which reached $1.4 trillion last year and could climb this year.
A stronger approach backed by Sen. Judd Gregg, R-N.H., would require Congress to pass legislation setting up the commission and require a vote on deficit-cutting recommendations if at least 14 panel members could agreed on a plan. But there isn’t enough support in the House or Senate to pass this version of a commission, given opposition from the right and left.
Under the alternative proposed Tuesday by Democrats, Obama would set up the commission by presidential order. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., would guarantee a vote this year after the November elections.
Gregg, the top Republican on the Senate Budget Committee, attacked the Democratic initiative as a “nothing burger,” given the absence of a law compelling a vote in the Senate. Citing the Senate’s freewheeling rules, he dismissed Reid’s promise and contended the offer was a cynical ploy to make it look like Democrats would do something about the deficit without really doing anything.
Yes, they’ve earned Oscars in looking busy at doing nothing.
And it looks like retiring GOP Sen. George Voinovich is going to join them in this effort-free effort.

Who knew Hollywood moved to the east coast?
Remember:
The issue is never the issue.
The issue is control.
So dear nan and dingy will ‘guarantee a vote this year after the Nov. election’? What makes either dear nan or dingy think they will be in control after the Nov. election? That a bunch of scum!
L
keep the checkbook out of these spendthrifts hands. we all knew a year ago the dems were the party of tax and SPEND, where the repubs are the party of tax and spend, yet 52% of america voted for this group. if taxpaying america has not figured out by now that the democrat party is too corrupt and too frivolous with our money to govern, then i pity them. i can forgive the young, but anyone over 30 who still wants to be governed by these clowns needs psychiatric help.
(emphasis added) They STILL don’t freakin’ get it!!
Let me guess: there will be a Blue Ribbon Panel that will issue a White Paper full of tough sounding recommendations that will be ignored, undermined and or by-passed by congress. We have seen this so many times over the past 30 years (from both Reps and Dems) with so many issues the only response should be derisive laughter.
Are these the same Senators/Congress that recently (Dec 09) raised the national debt ceiling to $12.4 TRILLION?
If only Congress could do something about those people who just keep spending and spending and spending.
There ought to be a law or something…
This will cost money, right?
BTW Michelle, this gives Kabuki a bad name…
They’re creating another bureaucratic committee to solve the deficit crisis? Thank God, we’re saved!
Could there be a better example of just how incompetent those idiots are?
You don’t want their retirement fund to run low do you?
Let me guess, chair will be McCain.
Uh, memo to the White House and Congress:
Spending money on another useless commission will contribute to the debt.
Are these people genuinely, certifiably, absolutely, “toys in the attic” insane?
So, once again, we see that he’s skirting the will of the people. This is a congresssional matter, not one that can be solved by executive order.
Constitutional professor my culo.
Everyone, except apparently most American voters, know that the democrats spend and spend and spend, then at some point (they’ll let you know) become “deficit hawks,” which only means tax and tax and tax. This is one of the reasons I am curbing my enthusiasm for 2010. The same electorate who voted these thieves in are suddenly now wise, fiscal conservatives? It doesn’t work like that.
Is the ‘Commission about Nothing’ chaired by Jerry Seinfeld?
Congressional Democrats: Comedy Gold
Errah, hopefully Chris Dudd and Bawney Fwank will get seats at the table next to Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins. One can only hope that Max Baucus and or his girlfriend chair this circle jerk since he did such a great bipartisan job on the healthcare bill. Can Lindsey Graham, Schmuck Shumer, Luis Gutierrez and John McLame be far behind??!!
As if.
My bad: I forgot to add cut the military. That’s it. Absolutely nothing else will come of this.
Yes, yes they are. Don’t EVER buy into their crap if it includes cutting spending. That would be a lie. They are not capable of cutting spending. And they lie with every breath. They will not be getting away with their lies any longer. The majority of Americans are on to them. The MSM is next on our hit list and they are also going down.
Anyone who still does not understand the problem is government is spending too much, not that taxpayers are paying too little, has a diseased mind.
About the only hope for cutting deficits we have is turning out the thieves in November, and that includes a lot of Republicans, too. A thorough flushing is in order, the current political class had its chance and failed miserably. I’d still like to see prosecutions as well.
Before I cross over I hope to see a Commission to Study the Money Wasted on Commissions Set up to Save Money but I guess it would be a waste of money. Kabuki Meets Punch & Judy.
It’s more like this.
Caption: “The democrat controlled congress shows their anger because the U.S. taxpayers aren’t believing their oft-claimed devotion to the “little people.”
This is the old shell game, except there is no pea. Laughable…..
Perhaps they should appoint Pete Townsend to chair the committee on preventing deafness.
Just like…
Michael Jackson cared for young boys.
OJ cares about finding Nicole’s killer.
Obama cares about transparency.
Harry Reid cares about the Congressional Black Caucus.
The Revs. Jackson and Sharpton care about lifting up their fellow man.
Not yet, but the day isn’t over and there’s always tomorrow.
Shouldn’t we at least get an estimate of the cost of this committee? This isn’t even pretending to be saving money to save money.
I think that this type of committee already exists, and its name is Congress.
It’s not even a nothing cheeseburger!
HA!!! Neither of these numbskulls will be in office after the November elections.
They are all a joke.
And btw: Send a message to the republicans who can’t control their spending (vote buying) addiction. Tell your rep that if he/she doesn’t stop the deficit spending and pork, they will go the way of Coakley.
A little O.T. but a great factoid on Obama’s first year.
Donks do care about deficits and debt. Recall how indignant they were at the deficit spending that took place during the Bush Administration, and the self-congratulatory way they contrasted that with Clinton’s budget surpluses.
But today, it’s not “deficit spending” but An Investment in Our Children’s Future”(TM). Get it? Good.
Remember, there are two basic rules that donks operate under that explain everything when it comes to why quadrupling-down on the Bush budget deficits is a good thing:
1. “That was then, this is now.”
2. “If there’s an (R) after his name, it’s bad; but if there’s a (D) after his name, it’s good.”
Idiotic rules, to be sure, but they were made by idiots — donks — for consumption by other idiots (i.e., donks).
As noted here and elsewhere, If WE THE PEOPLE want this movement to continue we need to have sloutions ready to go. Just imagine if Scott brown spent his first day in office outlining a bill that actually improves health INSURANCE instaed of co-opting health care by the government. That would be a homerun.
So many typos, so little time.
When politicians can’t figure out how to solve a problem, they form “commissions” and “committees”. Then hope the problem will be forgotten.
I hope he campaigns for SanFranNan and Dingy Harry!
Beware of the Dems removing 20% from Healthcare, keeping mounds of crap, and then demonizing dissenters for “obstructing what the people want.”
You can see it coming.
Let’s let the people who caused the problem solve it. Brilliant!
Drudge top-line: “Democrats propose $1.9 trillion increase in debt limit…”
Unbe-frickin-lievable. These people are learning-disabled (no offense meant to the learning-disabled). Brown wins last night, and they double down and pop this news this afternoon
My Dear Senators and Congressmen
What a bunch of woozy nuts. A group of over sexed irresponsible people cry out for abortion and you vote for it. A collection of same sex couples cry out for gay marriage and you vote for it. A union cries out to save their employer and you give them billions. And I ask you, what have these people contributed. You cheat on you taxes, hidden profits, and take vacations at the public’s expense. You have voted irrationally for your own benefit, and the benefit of your benefactors. Know this, every word you have said, every vote you have cast is put on the scale and weighed. You have totally disregarded the wants and needs of the very people that put you in office. All this and you expect your constituents to put you back in office. You are being judged by the citizens of this great country and found wanting; there is nothing more you can do to rectify your image for you have already done it all. I for one will welcome the vote.
So…they decided they shouldn’t be abusing their power.
I doubt that this administration will change its course.
More like Laugh-In.
Oops, I just dated myself back way too far.
Spin spin spin. They are backpedaling as fast as they can, like a crackhead who’s just been tazed. The Brown election has changed their rhetoric but not their long term strategy. The Marxists want to break the country and morph it into a Socialist hell.
Any real Democrats left in that party need to get out now.
Anyone who votes for ANY incumbent is, in my humble opinion, an illiterate, ill-informed idiot. Enough is enough!
Saw you on Fox & Friends this a.m., Michelle–you were spot on as usual.
The only reason the play like they “care” about a debt or deficit is so they can “do something” about it.
To them, the only thing that “does something about the debt” is: raising taxes ! (of course)
