Your Chicago corruption story of the day
From the land of Barack and Michelle and Rahm and Valerie and David and David and Arne and Ray and Desiree, here’s the latest corruption scandal rocking the Windy City. They did it for the children, no doubt:
The credit cards of 89 Chicago Board of Education employees have been yanked in the midst of an investigation into questionable spending by the last two Chicago School Board presidents and their staff, officials revealed Monday.
If employees at board headquarters want their credit cards back, they will have to justify their expenses dating back to June 30, explain why they need a credit card, and receive training on how to use it, Chicago Public Schools spokeswoman Monique Bond said. She said Schools CEO Ron Huberman canceled all credit cards on Jan. 19.
The disclosure of the action comes after the Chicago Sun-Times revealed that an internal report by Schools Inspector General James Sullivan details what sources said was thousands of dollars in artwork, limousine rides, high-priced meals and liquor charged by former board presidents Michael Scott, Rufus Williams or their staff to the board’s tab.
At the time, both board presidents were receiving stipends — $3,000 a month for Scott, who committed suicide in November, and $1,600 a month for his predecessor, Williams. Those stipends have since been canceled.
Mayor Daley said Monday he was awaiting two internal reports on the matter — from Sullivan and from former federal prosecutor Williams Jones Jr., who is expected to be hired by board members Wednesday at a cost of up to $100,000.

While we’re on the subject of Illinois, there’s a battle in the GOP over Obama’s old Senate seat. Infamous Republican Cap-and-Tax-8′er Mark Kirk holds the lead. The field is crowded with several solid conservative rivals, led by Patrick Hughes. Jim Geraghty looks at the race here. The primary election will be held a week from today.

Why isn’t anyone running against Guttieriz?
I think corruption in Chicago is almost as embedded as it is in Mexico.
They just don’t know any other way to do politics.
Welcome to Chicago.
I suspect there is much more corruption in the school board waiting to be discovered. Nobody would kill themselves over a little graft like this woudl they? Abuse of credit card is small potatoes.
Evidently they have that part down pat.
My brother knows Mark Kirk. Kirk told him that he had cut a deal with Obama and that is why he voted for the stimulus bill. In return he gets to play (as in pay to play).
The Chicago way is to allow 20 percent Republicans to the 80 percent Democrats (to not look like a monopoly). The Republicans then run interference for the Democrats.
I’m sure they would better understand how to use a credit card if they’d only been taught Mayan Math.
Sounds like teaching by good practical example to me. How else are the little hoopleheads going to learn.
There is a growing pool of corruption with these Democrats. Where does one begin to prosecute these people? It’s like a gigantic oil spill and all you have is a bucket and a rowboat. I guess that is their MO: “Baffle them with more and more. They can’t keep up.”
I agree with you, RedDog. The corruption starts at the StateHouse and slowly, but surely, ooozes its way into the House of Reps, Senate, and, of course, the White House. Usually, this takes a while, but not in the case of Obeyme.
Illinois would be a red state if it weren’t for metro Chicago. Newspaper polls are often too heavily loaded with Chicago idiots while we fringe county and downstate folks are under represented.
The state GOP chairman calls tea partiers a “fringe element”. If Kirk makes the ballot, there is a movement to vote Dem and leave the GOP in the wilderness for four more years.
I’ll never spend a dime in support of the state Republican party.
Chicago IS as corrupt as Mexico, maybe more……
Oh how I love my state: four governors in 35 years serving time in the clink, “Turban” Durbin, and Obama… I wish Indiana would annex Chicago.
Not interested – in fact, most Hoosiers wish Illinois would annex Gary….
Errah, just like valleygreaser my longer posts aren’t getting posted for some reason. . . .
I wonder how many underage abortions were purchased using those cards.
