Every Senate Democrat voted to raise debt limit to $14.3 trillion

By Michelle Malkin  •  January 28, 2010 01:02 PM

Every Senate Democrat voted to raise the debt limit to $14.3 trillion. The vote was 60-40 on straight partisan lines.

Let me repeat that — and let it be repeated loudly and often:

Every Senate Democrat voted to raise the debt limit to $14.3 trillion.

That’s $45,000 per American.

Here’s the roll call vote:

Can’t say it enough: There is no such thing as a “moderate Democrat” in the Senate.

***

Question: Why is Democrat MA Sen. Paul Kirk still voting?

Reader D. Russel e-mails:

Michelle:

An idea to focus the whole country on the continuing insanity of the Democrats. Energize citizens to send their Democrat senatorsan invoice… a bill to pay them back for deciding to place every man, woman and child in the US an additional $45,000.00 [in debt]. Better yet, make the invoice cumulative since the initial stimulus bill of Obama.

What happen to waiting for Brown to be seated before taking any important votes?

What happened to voting on this extension of the debt ceiling before the SotU speech? Way to get rolled again, McConnell.

    Exactly!

Senate precedent is that Kirk’s role as Senator ended at the end of the day on January 19th… the day the election was held to fill the seat.

My thinking on why the rinos in the senate have not said anything about kirk is, they want the same thing the way the vote went, but being they are up for relection letting kirk vote makes them all warm and fuzzy with the voters. This whole thing stinks more than a skunk!

More than likely, they didn’t object because this way the debt ceiling gets raised and the Dems take 100% of the blame for doing so.

Why is Democrat MA Sen. Paul Kirk still voting?

Indeed. The Weekly Standard researched this before the election.

“But based on Massachusetts law, Senate precedent, and the U.S. Constitution, Republican attorneys said Kirk will no longer be a senator after election day, period.”

Precedent: “Strom Thurmond was elected senator from South Carolina in 1956, succeeding an appointed senator. A resolution introduced by then-Senate Majority Leader Lyndon Johnson established his Senate term to have begun the day after his election, weeks before his certification.”

From Give Us Liberty “A CRS report notes that “[p]revailing practice is for state governors to fill Senate vacancies by appointment, with the appointee serving until a special election has been held, at which time the appointment expires immediately.”

Why aren’t the Republicans, or anyone, challenging this vote? This is deeply weird.

Any use of the supermajority vote in the Senate would be a violation of the peoples trust. They are pulling a fast one.

They should not be passing any legislation that requires all the Dems to vote in block to pass including one vote that the people of UMASS replaced.

That is downright deceitful and dishonest. These Dems are going down the tubes faster than a greased up Jamaican Bobsledder. They don’t even try to act civil anymore. Either the power has gone to their head or they are so desperate it is scary.

They are shooting themselves in the foot but they continue to listen to the likes of Harry and Nancy and Obama.

They used Ben Nelson like an old shoe and the old fool fell for it. So many others are too.

Clearly, the Democrats motive for doing this is to bancrupt the United States of America. There is no other reason.

Clearly, the only way for voters in the United States of America to remedy this ill is to remove all Democrat elected officials from office, whether by vote or crowbar.

Anyone not willing to must be satisfied with living under the heavy hand of government and the massive debt they will take to their own grave.

Have you forgotten, or just choose to ignore, the fact that nearly every Republican in the Senate voted to lower the marginal tax rate for the highest earning americans from 35% to 25% last year, which would cause the the debt to skyrocket like nothing the Democrats have proposed or enacted?

Senator Burris’ office just hung up on me. I asked why he voted for this. She said, “To create jobs.” I then said, “Well, that doesn’t work. The only jobs created by government spending is public, not private sector jobs.” She then hung up. How I love political appointees vice elected officials. Now time to call Turban Durbin’s office.
