First Lady drags daughters into obesity campaign

By Michelle Malkin  •  February 1, 2010 01:14 PM

Hey, whatever happened to leaving the Obama girls alone?

Charm City Moms: A blog for Maryland parents by The Baltimore Sun’s Kate Shatzkin

The Obama children and child obesity

President Barack Obama is in Baltimore today, but it’s his wife’s last pronouncement on her campaign against childhood obesity that’s caught my attention. As the president did several months ago in an education speech, First Lady Michelle Obama has taken a personal tack — divulging some private information about her children — to drive home her point about early intervention in kids’ health.

In remarks at a YMCA in Virginia, Obama said her daughters’ pediatrician warned her — some time ago, apparently — that the girls were getting “off track” in terms of body-mass index…

…The personal aspect brings the story home and helps us remember how important the message is.

On the other hand, I do wonder about the kids’ privacy factor here, and how disclosures like these could open the door to unwanted scrutiny for the first daughters…

Hasn’t stopped POTUS and FLOTUS before.

Flashback: Leave Obama’s kids alone…except when POTUS & FLOTUS need them for Obamacare

    1. Publicizing personal physical information about your kids is in really bad taste.

    2. Publicizing personal physical information about your kids causes you’re kids huge embarrassment.

Hey, I’m all for encouraging the kiddies to eat healthy and moderately and exercise. Now is the time to develop good habits, not to mention the fact that we DO have a major issue with kids w/regard to obesity and the accompanying health problems.

And any cruel put-downs should, of course, be avoided. These are pre-teen/teenage girls we’re talking about.

However, if it were me, I would not be voluntarily sharing ANYTHING about my kids’ medical history. She can use them as a positive example now without mentioning that.

It is a great program and incorporates healthy eating, outdoor activities, after school programs, etc. She is really excited about it and it really sounds like a great program. I guess her job is pretty safe, huh? Michelle O. is behind this, so the funding should continue at least for the next 3 years. I have nothing against a program of this type, as long as it isn’t MANDATED! Just keep it voluntary, folks! This daughter is not a radical right-wing extremist like I am, but she does lean to the right!

Are they saying that the Obama daughters were getting fat and that their pediatrician warned them to fix it?

Claiming that they were getting off track doesn’t mean much. They should be more clear about this.

Mrs. Obama comes off as a rather large women who would carry more body mass, whereas Mr. Obama appears to be a skinny, 98 pound weakling. She may well push him around in that relationship. If they had a knock down, drag out fight Mrs. Obama would likely mop the floor of with Mr. Obama, he is so skinny and weak looking.

Nevertheless, it is understood from Obama’s habits and his past, that Mr. Obama smokes cigarettes, which does help people carry less body mass, and less weight.

Here is a simple solution for Mr. and Mrs. Obama in dealing with their children. If they truly worry that their daughters are at risk of being overweight they can always just give them a few packs of cigarettes per day to help keep the weight off.

It appears to work for their daddy.

    Misscheryle,

    That is an interesting observation.

I have wondered what is in the water, or the food supply, in other words, I’ve been wondering what people are eating, drinking, or breathing these days that they have been claiming that Mr. Obama and Mrs. Obama are Brilliant, glamorous, wonderful, and all that.

My wife often makes similar comments.

When she sees Mrs. Obama she orally expresses, “She doesn’t dress very well. She looks awful,” and similar comments related to the weird look on Mrs. Obama’s face, her body shape, and her style of apparel.

Our children see Mrs. Obama fairly often in photographs and on television and spontaneously comment “Oh, that lady looks really weird. She looks scary.”

I fail to see Brilliance in either Mrs. Obama or Mr. Obama. I see ignorance in those who praise them, claiming that they are Brilliant, that they are so nice, and that they have such great style.

I have been wondering if Mr. and Mrs. Obama’s education was mainly enabled by affirmative action, with special favors granted them because they were “connected” to radicals who had pull with the University system.

In other words, Mr. Obama does not strike me as Brilliant, or very bright, or very well educated, nor does Mrs. Obama.

There are Bright, well educated persons with whom one can make a contrast with the Obamas.

    Here is a short list:

Marylyn vos Savant: World record holder with the highest IQ on the Stanford-Binet system of 228 (100 is “normal).

    Thomas Sowell: PhD, Economist, Author

Walter Williams: PhD, Economist, Chair of the Economics Department, George Mason University.

That is a very short list for now which lists some brilliant, bright, well educated people in contrast to Mr. and Mrs. Obama.

Regarding the Obama daughters, they appear to be cute, nice children. I wish them well.

According to the new BMI, when I was 17 years old, and 6 feet tallk and weighed 175 pounds with six-pack abs I was on just barely below the “overweight” threshold. That now gets me a BMI of 23.8 and 25 is considered “overweight” on the current scale! That is NUTS!

Nobody should pay attention to this stupid scale…

Maybe Michelle could move the spotlight off the girls by encouraging an effort to make PE (physical education) mandatory in public schools again. And encourage private schools to do the same.

When I was in high school my evil grandmother constantly compared me to my anorexic aunt. Surprise surprise-I ended up with a full-blown case of exercise bulimia-which I still to some degree have.

Sounds like a job for Oprah. She’s written dozens of books about how she keeps her weight down.

PP, you forgot to put in the ‘canned laughter’ that statement…

Ya know, this James O’Keefe arrest is beginning to turn on the Justice Dept. Here’s a link (it’s on Buzzworthy above) to a Andrew Breitbart video interview on FoxNews where he is pretty much accusing personal involvement by Eric Holder of framing O’Keefe. As they say, stay tuned.
