ClimateGate update: Mann handled
Last month, I compiled a link round-up for you on ClimateGate con artist Michael Mann of Penn State University.
Here’s the very latest on the academic fraud probe by Penn State:
Inquiry into climate scientist moves to next phase
Wednesday, February 3, 2010
University Park, Pa. — An internal inquiry by Penn State into the research and scholarly activities of a well-known climate scientist will move into the investigatory stage, which is the next step in the University’s process for reviewing research conduct.
A University committee has concluded its inquiry into allegations of research impropriety that were leveled in November against Professor Michael Mann, after information contained in a collection of stolen e-mails was revealed. More than a thousand e-mails are reported to have been “hacked” from computer servers at the Climatic Research Unit of the University of East Anglia in England, one of the main repositories of information about climate change.
During the inquiry, all relevant e-mails pertaining to Mann or his work were reviewed, as well as related journal articles, reports and additional information. The committee followed a well-established University policy during the inquiry (http://guru.psu.edu/policies/ra10.html ).
In looking at four possible allegations of research misconduct, the committee determined that further investigation is warranted for one of those allegations. The recommended investigation will focus on determining if Mann “engaged in, directly or indirectly, any actions that seriously deviated from accepted practices within the academic community for proposing, conducting or reporting research or other scholarly activities.” A full report (http://www.research.psu.edu/orp) concerning the allegations and the findings of the inquiry committee has been submitted.
In the investigatory phase, as in the inquiry phase, the committee will not address the science of global climate change, a matter more appropriately left to the profession. The committee is charged with looking at the ethical behavior of the scientist and determining whether he violated professional standards in the course of his work.
The investigatory committee will consist of five tenured full professor faculty members who will assess the evidence in the case and make a determination on Mann’s conduct.

Introducing: the next Ward Churchill.
I doubt anything will come of this Penn State Investigation. Just going thru the motions is my guess…
To much Federal Cash flowing to Penn State due to the fraudulent Mann…
Remember that “hide the decline” is a colloquialism!
The committee is charged with looking at the ethical behavior of the scientist Wow. Isn’t this the last thing liberals want, an investigation into ethical behavior?
PSU gets hundreds of thousands in government $$$ for this research. Of course they won’t find anything seriously wrong — that might jeopardize the gravy train.
It must be remembered that in the Orwellian world of the nihilists/socialists/fascists/statists/collectivists/know-it-alls/America-haters/opposite worldview-holders, “ethics” means something very different from what “morals” means to conservatives/traditionalists.
If they can him, which they won’t, he can probably get a brainwashing job down the road at the new climate program at Dickinson College.
As with other commentors here, I expect they will close ranks and produce vaguely worded findings that “He should be more careful” or some such rot.
Ah yes, let’s keep it in house, that way we can really get to the bottom of this and then we can all party at Michael Mann’s house, afterwards.
Penn State University released a press release today stating that” While Mr Manns methodology and subsequent research report fall well short of the Scientific Norms, we at Penn State University back his findings 100%.
Too bad accuweather.com (even if individual meteorologists do not) buys into this fool.
At risk it not just the money Mann brought in, but ALL PSU funding from the funding agencies used by Mann. PSU will certainly try to minimize any damage, but if they brush it under the rug and are later found to have engaged in a coverup, there will be consequences. The reputation of science in general is at stake.
This situation is not going to go away until someone official outs Mann as having engaged in misconduct, and that means a loss in funding for him. Debunking of a Mann collaborator here:

Time to “claw back” the federal money donated to Mann and Penn State. Hundreds of charity recipients in Minnesota are required to return donated money from convicted billionaire ponzi schemer Tom Petters. I believe the same claw backs were issued in Madoff’s scams. I want ALL of my tax money returned from fraudsters Mann and Penn St. Maybe the POWERLINE guys can file a lawsuit on my behalf
Talk about wearing tinfoil hats – this Global warming debacle ranks right up there with the time when everyone believed the earth was flat. Another case of “settled science”.
And people rant against the “birthers”. Give me a break.
Hope they have enough snow to hold the skiing events in Vancouver. Sounds like it’s melting on the peaks.
Read the findings of the committee here.
It is a white wash.

Great stuff at Climate Depot. The Warmers are cooked. They will have to drum up another crisis so look for oxygen depletion, plastics, or some other fantasy to exert statist control over world populations. Remember cloroflourocarbons? That was their greatest success back in the 80s. That “science” was crap also.
This issue is more pernicious than any Wall Street scandal. TRILLIONS of dollars and major changes in our lifestyles and travel and industries/jobs are being impacted by so few fraudulent individuals with high and mighty social engineering agendas. Life sentenses is the minimum they should receive for such mass deception! My God, if you told someone twenty years ago that your job and lifestyle from travel to food and home life and energy supply would be determined by the welfare of polar bears and penguins you’d be told to see a shrink! Yet our schools and “science” cable channels are still hell-bent on shoving issue as one even more important than terrorists having nuclear weapons and plague viruses. Totally green insane.

Please be advised that under the False Claims Act, dating from the Civil War, those who expose and prove swindles against the U.S. Treasury are entitled to a percentage of the money recovered. Those hackers stand to make a fortune if they feel up to revealing themselves, as well as any straightforward investigators sifting through the slop.
Concur with your analysis.
We don’t know the outcome of the new investigation, but there is certain downside a white wash.
The investigators know that the PA state legislature is watching them carefully and that the next investigation might be hearings in Harrisburg.
Again, we don’t know what the outcome will be, but I certainly think it’s possible that Mann gets into some trouble with this.
SUNY at Albany, you’re next!
You better start getting your house in order – reopen your investigation of Dr. Wang now!
Penn State might save their reputation. Will you?
Kind of reminds me of the House Ethics Committee.
…that all believe in global warming and don’t want to do anything to jeopardize the current flim flam on the world that cleans up the environment and brings in lots of cash to the University.
“The ends justify the means” said spokesman Frank Fraud. “Even if it is not true, it has made people respect the environment to keep it clean. That makes it ok.”
Fellow member Ima Liebetter summed it up nicely. “Little white lies are very useful in changing peoples attitudes to what we want them to be.” “And besides, we are fully invested in this scheme and we are so close to accomplishing our goal, just like health care in Congress.” We can’t give up now.”
President Obama was flying around the country in his jet doing campaigning and was unavailable for comment.
Meanwhile, ‘global warming’ is preventing wind turbines from working.
(Well, at least it isn’t killing any birds while it’s stopped…)
Accuweather sucks. They can’t even get the current temperature right much less the forecast.
That’s awesome. What dopes thought it was a good idea to run a mechanical device that requires hydraulic fluid and probably a decent amount of lubrication to spin freely in the wind…. and put it in the subzero temps of Minnesota?
I wonder if they’ve figured out that the turbine itself will not generate enough energy to heat itself. Maybe they can bring in some kerosene heaters and some diesel generators to help get these clean energy devices working.
lol…
NJ-Aviator,
What we need is for everyone in Minnesota to crank up their heaters and then open all their doors and windows. And turn on the heaters in their cars too! That should help…
This will end up being a waste of time.
Elections can sometimes have everlasting consequences.
And did they ever hear of MIL spec hydraulic and lubrication fluids?
