Well, he broke his no-middle-class-tax-hike pledge more than a year ago with the passage of the massive S-CHIP expansion funded with regressive skyrocketing tobacco tax increases. But never mind the pesky little details. President Obama now wants you to know he’s “agnostic” on breaking that pledge (again). This time, he’ll just blame it on the sham deficit commission he wants to set up as fall guys.

President Barack Obama said he is “agnostic” about raising taxes on households making less than $250,000 as part of a broad effort to rein in the budget deficit.
Obama, in a Feb. 9 Oval Office interview, said that a presidential commission on the budget needs to consider all options for reducing the deficit, including tax increases and cuts in spending on entitlement programs such as Social Security and Medicare.
“The whole point of it is to make sure that all ideas are on the table,” the president said in the interview with Bloomberg BusinessWeek, which will appear on newsstands Friday. “So what I want to do is to be completely agnostic, in terms of solutions.”
Obama repeatedly vowed during the 2008 presidential election campaign that he would not raise taxes on individuals making less than $200,000 and households earning less than $250,000 a year. When senior White House economic adviser Lawrence H. Summers and Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner suggested in August that the administration might be open to going back on that pledge, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs quickly reiterated the president’s promise.
In the interview, Obama said that putting preconditions on the agenda of a bipartisan advisory commission, which he said he would soon establish, would just undermine its purpose.
“What I can’t do is to set the thing up where a whole bunch of things are off the table,” Obama said. “Some would say we can’t look at entitlements. There are going to be some that say we can’t look at taxes, and pretty soon, you just can’t solve the problem.”

Medicare and Social security are not really entitlements. These are programs that working Americans have paid into for many years. Cutting them is similar to borrowing money from someone and then disavowing the obligation to repay that loan.

As Thomas Sowell pointed out, the Bush-Cheney Tax cuts brought in more revenue (tax cuts have that affect in America), which was promptly spent, of course.
Since no democrat anywhere knows anything about economics, we can be sure that tax increases are on the way which will depress the economy further, increase the deficit and result in more calls to increase taxes. And so it will go. If you believe we are at or near the tipping point for the economy, there is no backing out and the result will be economic collapse. And yes, soaring interest payments of the debt will contribute to the situation.
When will this happen? If God hates this country, as soon as the Republicans take over.

Which would you prefer:

2) kill off Social Security and Medicare before the US government goes insolvent
Those are your only two choices. The “I want my money back” response is exactly the reason this country is on the road to failure.
When does discussing an option mean you are going to do it?
I’ve got about 30 inches of snow on my roof. I discussed the options of taking a shovel up there and pushing the snow off, letting it melt over time, or making an instrument that can be used from the ground.
Yeah, well the last one proved to be the best. I promised myself that at my age I would no longer take the risks I did when I was younger. Leaving the snow on the roof with the risk of collapse, though discussed, isn’t acceptqble either.
Discussing options doesn’t mean you will accept them.

I had a conversation with a friend a few weeks ago regarding the fate of the Soviet pilot who shot dow KAL flight 007 back in the ’80s. He was actually given a commendation. That sob is alive, “retired” and living in just such a blockhouse. He still thinks he did the right thing but is mad that they never did give him a customary $200 bonus for doing the deed. He loves his country and is grateful for his loaf of bread, sausage stick, and his daily ration of vodka. Life is good.

Vinny, you are correct that SS is the 3rd rail in politics. However, I would be all for stopping SS and Medicaide (?)to the leeches of our society. I have a cousin, with 3 kids from 3 different fathers, who worked maybe a grand total of 2 years in her life and then came down with some undiagnosed disease rendering her unable to work (so she says). SS pays her monthly. She is useless. There are many like her, including illegals. SS should be targeted SOLELY at folks who worked their entire lives and paid in all that time. I have an Aunt who worked very hard her whole life in a factory wiht not much pay. She completely depends on SS and she deserves what little she gets. How about cutting off all the mooches and baby factory mom’s, as well as deporting all the illegals and their anchor babies, and taking all that money that is saved at the state level to educate and feed the little invaders and put it toward retirees? I know that is a dream but if we were truly serious about cutting spending and keeping SS in tact we would make these very tough, and even heartless, decisions to clean our society of the drains. There are many things that could be done but the government won’t do it.
I support #1 – flat tax, #2 – term limits, #3 – our tax money paying ONLY for our military and infrastructure. Period!

This is precisely why we need a Constitutional amendement to clarify what the central government can and cannot do fiscally. 1.Fair tax 2. A balanced budget limited to 15% of GDP 3.No siezure of private property – ESPECIALLY FINANCIAL ASSETS, apart from a criminal conviction.
Whatever is done must hamstring government so that the danger we are in now never occurs again.

That is precisely why I am running for congress. We really don’t need another amendment and it won’t happen realistically. What needs to happen is have a changing of the Dukes and Dutchesses we currently have in office and get people like myself and you to run. Congress needs to stay within the enumerated powers given to them under the constitution as provided by our founders. Adding another amendment for them to ignore will not solve the issue. Congress needs to take the power it has ceded to the past and present presidents and run the government as our founders wanted for this great country. We are out of synch with those beliefs hence our problems!

I would agree with you but for the fact that without a Constitutional block we will be faced with these vampires on an eight to twelve year cycle. Each time they gain control, and even when Republicans are in power, our freedoms are eroded. I agree an amendment would be difficult but the alternative is a guaranteed decent into a scene reminicent of the last days of the Roman Empire. They made it a thousand years, we won’t make it to 250. Even Sparta made it 800.

If any legislation increases the deficit, then, effective the date the President signs said bill into law all United States Senators and Representatives who voted to pass said law as well as all members of the current Administration (to include, but not limited to, ambassadors, judges, cabinet members, czars, and czarinas [or tsars and tsarinas], assistant secretaries, spokespersons, social secretaries, undersecretaries, deputy assistant secretaries, deputy under assistant secretaries and general flunkies, etc. including those who left the Administration prior to passage of this bill), along with any politician, past or present (to include, but not limited to, members of former Administrations, as described above, as well as state, county and municipal executives and legislators) or non-politicians (to include, but not limited to, Hollywood actors and film directors, TV or radio personalities, lobbyists, protestors, newscasters, editorialists, pundits, journalists, bloggers, etc.) who ever supported passage of this bill through a speech, protest, advertisement or statement, whether televised, filmed, written, spoken or conveyed through sign language or signage, or who appeared at the signing ceremony for the bill, do solemnly pledge the following:
“Should this bill result in: 1.) any increase in the national debt; or 2.) any increase in taxes for those making (as of 20 Jan 2009 and adjusted for inflation on an annual basis) less than $250,000 then our very fortunes, along with those of our immediate families (including, after passage of the bill, those born into or adopted into the family unit, or who joined the family by marriage – whomever, whatever, or the number and type of person(s) and/or entities that happens to involve) to include parents, grandparents, spouses (including ex’s) children, in-laws, pets, aunts, uncles, first, second or third cousins, as well as kissin’ cousins, plants, nieces, nephews, sorority sisters or fraternity brothers, attorneys, grandchildren and siblings plus all spouses of the aforementioned along with their immediate families as described above, shall be used to offset the results of 1.), or 2.) stated above.
“The fortunes of said health care reform supporters to be encumbered shall include all income and savings, lottery winnings, honoraria, book advances, donations and contributions from private citizens or corporations, tax refunds (after all tax liabilities are settled), bribes to include checks or cash from any ACORN or ACORN-like organization, as well as investments, change-jars, pensions (Congressional, Presidential, Social Security, 401k’s, etc.), trust funds, piggy-banks, off-shore accounts, cars, ATVs, trucks, watercraft and surfboards (with or without sails), aircraft, roller skates, motorcycles, bicycles, tricycles, unicycles, etc. plus the equity in and decorations (to include paintings and Nobel Prizes, Heisman Trophies, NBA MVP awards, Pulitzers, Grammys, White House furnishings and silver, etc.) therein for all dwellings owned in part or in whole by the aforementioned supporters to include, but not limited to, any Habitat for Humanity, vacation home, Presidential Library, ski lodge, tree-house, apartment, cave, condo, shed, mobile home, trailer, or tent and shall also include any and all partnerships in ventures (national, international or extra-terrestrial or connected in any way to global warming) designed to shelter wealth. Further, all pre-nuptial, divorce and property settlement agreements shall be null and void in regards to sheltering assets owned in whole or in part by any and all of the aforementioned.
“To ensure that none of the aforementioned persons are impoverished by the law they have chosen freely to support, those who have their fortunes thusly encumbered shall be allowed to receive an income equal to twice the poverty level as determined by the Federal Poverty Level established the year this legislation was signed and as adjusted for the rate of inflation on an annual basis. However, as such, said persons will not be eligible for any welfare, food stamps, aid or comfort from any federal, state or local government services.
“Before or after this statue is signed should any of the aforementioned persons leave this country, either temporarily or permanently, they are still held liable under the terms of this amendment.”

The state and federal governments want smokers to quit, in speeches, but, in reality, they need them to support all the programs the tax helps. It shows the hypocrisy. If a large amount of smokers quit, there would be heck to pay in state legislatures and congress.
Not necessarily. I do have a term limit proposal and flat tax. But, change will not come overnight in congress even with a changing of the guard. First and foremost the first yr he (Obama) must be neutralized by not passing any legislation second congress must take it’s power back by putting an end to his back door executive order signing when something doesn’t go his way. He has violated this more than the american public knows about.

The other Side; that depends on the definition of middle income earners. The IRS defines that as a household with a taxable income of about 40,000 dollars. No barry has not raised rates yet on that level, but if he cancels the bush tax cuts, the biggest % increases will be to those lower income earners. 10 and 15% increases if my memory serves at the lowest incomes while 3% at the top.
Another thing on the social security tax, look at that form you get from them an see how little you actually paid in over the years, then divide your monthly stipend they expect to pay you into that amount, and you will get all your money back in less than a couple of years, so please do your civic duty and die off when done so you aren’t asking my grandchildren to support you in your dottage. I haven’t heard that word used outside of the religious context; but I have heard dishonest people try to use arcane terms to conceal their intentions… it sure sounds like our taxes are going up, and that Hope-a-Dope doesn’t want to let the cat out of the bag just yet.
The dems went nuts when Bush proposed personal investment account instead of paying directly into SS. I would have preferred to have had that, even if I had lost half when the stock market lost value. At least I would have been in control of half instead of having no control over none. The gov never saw a dollar it didn’t need or saved a dollar it could have spent. I grew up knowing that SS was not going to be there for me. The only thing which surprises me is that it lasted this long.
