“I am Dr. Amy Bishop”

The woman was out of control. Law enforcement officers knew it. Her family knew it. Academia must have known it. How many more incidents like this will be disclosed before we stop the charade of plausible deniability? And how did she continue to get pass after pass? Who vouched for her? Who will take responsibility?
Via the Boston Globe:
Amy Bishop was charged with assault in 2002 IHOP dispute
In March, 2002, Bishop walked into an International House of Pancakes in Peabody with her family, asked for a booster seat for one of her children, and learned the last seat had gone to another mother.
Bishop, according to a police report, strode over to the other woman, demanded the seat and launched into a profanity-laced rant.
When the woman would not give the seat up, Bishop punched her in the head, all the while yelling “I am Dr. Amy Bishop.”

Thanks to commenters below, here are links to the latest stories showing that students and professors knew Amy Bishop was a dangerous loon:
Professor Had Raised Concerns About Accused Shooter’s Mental Health
Her colleagues agree that she could be unusual. William Setzer, chairman of the chemistry department, recalls that she would interrupt meetings with bizarre tangents, “left field kind of stuff.” Robert O. Lawton, a biology professor who was in the room during the shooting but escaped unscathed, also thought she could be strange, but said she wasn’t the strangest academic he’d run across in his long career.
Another professor, however, has long been wary of Ms. Bishop. He asked The Chronicle not to use his name because, considering recent events, he is worried about his own safety. The professor, who was a member of Ms. Bishop’s tenure-review committee, said he first became concerned about Ms. Bishop’s mental health “about five minutes after I met her.”
The professor said that during a meeting of the tenure-review committee, he expressed his opinion that Ms. Bishop was “crazy.” Word of what he said made it back to Ms. Bishop. In September, after her tenure denial, she filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, alleging gender discrimination. The professor’s remark was going to be used as possible evidence in that case.
Students said they signed a petition and complained to no avail about the classroom conduct of an Alabama professor accused of killing three colleagues and wounding three others in a shooting rampage at a faculty meeting.
The students upset with biology professor Amy Bishop told The Associated Press they went to University of Alabama in Huntsville administrators at least three times a year ago, complaining that she was ineffective in the classroom and had odd, unsettling ways.
The students said Bishop never made eye contact during conversations, taught by reading out of a textbook and made frequent references to Harvard University, her beloved alma mater.
“We could tell something was off, that she was not like other teachers,” said nursing student Caitlin Phillips.

One expects this lady used the “Doctor” honorific at every possible chance she had.
“RESPECT MY PIECE OF PAPER. IM SMARTER/BETTER THAN YOU.”
There is something very suspicious about how much of a pass she has gotten over the years. One thing for sure: She needs to be in a psychiatric hospital. In the next couple of weeks, I’m sure we will learn more, especially, the shooting of her brother.
Who will take responsibilty? Why, no one, of course! This is the age of P.C. in the U.S.A. “It’s the system’s fault, her parents failed her, society failed her, she had an unhappy childhood, the jocks made fun of her in high school, & the good old, she’s just misunderstood.”
It is truly frightening to think how many of these psychos are out there running around amongst us. Many of them are roaming free thanks to the progressive way of thinking that they “deserve” to be free and it’s not “fair” to have them locked up. Anyone who exhibits this kind of behavior needs to be put in a secure facility until treatment is completed. And then, they need to be monitored carefully for the rest of their lives. That includes the idiot who attacked Mitt Romney on the airplane. That is not normal behavior, even if you are drunk!!
I’m Ted Bell.
TYPICAL; I am Doctor Blowhard, unquestionably better than you, and undeniably more capable of running your life than you, so shut up and I will make GOOD decisions for you. Now, are you better at cooking or cleaning?
OT: Michelle, have you released a statement on the HotAir acquisition or have I just missed it? Thanks.
Maybe she was unhappy with her appearance?
According to an article in the Chronicle of Higher Education, other faculty at the university felt she was unbalanced. Was there any process to report this to someone who could help?
http://chronicle.com/article/Professor-Had-Raised-Concerns/64221/
This woman’s story gets loonier by the day! How in hell did she ever get a Ph’D. Oh…yeah…American liberal education. I get it.
Well, one of the people responsible is dead – Gopi K. Podila
A number of students took their complaints about her far enough to have a formal petition with dozens of signatures. Podila ignored them and has paid the ultimate price.
Of course, the university president knew nothing about the petition.
Students complained…
Of course the solution is more gun control. /s
These are the people whose jobs were ‘saved’. While the private sector is cutting jobs to get costs in order, the state and federal government are paying this caliber of person more than they deserve.
The government needs to trim down its costs. We are going to have to shed police, teachers, and firefighters from the government rolls.
If she’s indicative of what we are going to go through when stimulus ends and gov has to cut jobs, Greece will look tame.
What do you expect form a left wing extremist who is in love with Obama. She is entitled don’t you know.
She sounds like most of the other libtard professors I read about.
Her mistake was not teaching at Columbia, where she surely would have been given tenure.
Charged with assault for the IHOP incident? Absolutely. But at the same time she should not have been prosecuted any worse than anyone else in this country. Think of Chuck Schumer and his tirade on the airplane. There are lots and lots of people in this world who cannot handle their anger. Bishop is one of them. She should have had a criminal record and that should have prevented her from being able to obtain a gun. If you want to make a statement that we as a society have become too soft on criminals, there are pros and cons to such position. However, I do think that there are many in this country who are far more dangerous than Bishop and it doesn’t surprise me that the criminal justice system has focused on these others.
Maybe she was channeling this guy and didn’t have the proper frequency.
I meant to write: Should she have been charged with assault for IHOP. And I think she should have been. However, it is not the Amy Bishops in this world that worry me the most.
I’ve been around enough academics in my life to know that this kind of attitude\behavior is a) not uncommon, and b) of no concern — as long as the victim was not credentialed herself. What I don’t get is why she was protected by so many for so long? There are lots of people in academia who are obsessed with Obama. Surely they could afford to lose one nutball. Though a woman, she is white, not an islamist, and not a part of the pc staff teaching pc curriculae. I know I am missing something in this story, I just don’t know what.
The obvious question to me is why was she allowed to have a gun in the first place (assuming she owned it legally). But I guess that question is verboten around here.
Beenthere, I don’t think that she has been protected by so many for so long. I just think that the Justice system has their hands full.
I feel sorry for her children. Can you imagine what she must have been like at home? “Yes Dr. Mommie Dearest.”
Is it a stretch to see similarities between events preceding this incident and those in the Ft. Hood massacre? Blind eyes and PC …??
This just keeps getting more and more like “Alice In Wonderland” with every passing day.
How many crimes has this woman committed in her life? How in the world was this allowed to continue to this point?
Has the MSM started the “she-was-a-tea-bagger-and-rush-limbaugh-fan” yet?
To be clear, the incident I was referring to was the recent murders.
It is not too far off the mark to say that Major Hasan is the “Amy Bishop” of the US Army!
Another examples of the enraged violent leftist in our country. Another Democrat with extremist behaviors and a bent toward using violence to get what they want. It’s no longer safe to be around these radical anti-American racists on the left and especially those in academia.
I concede that may well be a factor, but it still doesn’t seem to explain it. What card was she able to play? If anyone on this site, with the possible exception of RSS, had punched a woman in the head at a public restaurant they would still be reporting to their parole officer.
So, can someone come up with a bubble-chart I can use to see if academics are “slipping their clutch?”
My wife works at a Credit Union for a major university here in Hawaii. (Does that narrow it down?)
The problems they have with the tenured professors (many of which are Birkenstock-wearing, pony-tailed Haight-Asbury wannabes) are amazing. Most want immediate attention and recognition. Spoiled little brats.
They can’t believe that they are charged fees for bouncing checks, or for not paying their credit cards on time. Sometimes they actually have to wait in line. OMG.
My wife has helped a professor balance her checkbook. A lot of them are “Idiot-Savants” with more idiot than savant.
WarEagle, there is a world of difference between Bishop and Hasan. Bishop can’t control her anger and should have never been allowed to have a firearm. She needed and still needs psychiatric help. Hasan, carefully planned his attack and is a treasonous terrorist. Comparing Bishop to Hasan is the same as comparing Khalid Mohamed to a someone who commited aggravated assault. Are you arguing for trying KSM in civilian criminal courts?
Harvard grad? Why am I not surprised?
Good Lord, those students could have been speaking about my history prof when they described her classroom conduct. It’s not Dr. Amy Bishop – he wasn’t nearly that ugly. However he kept referring to his sole piece of publishing, a book that tried to clear Nevil Chamberlain of cowardliness. Come to think of it… wasn’t there something in the news yesterday of a gunman stalking the library at my ol’ Alma Mater?
Actually, that’s a rather good question. Vinny made notice of that earlier.
Of course, the real question is that Frau Doktor, being a typical whack-a-doodle liberal, you would think she wouldn’t have anything to do with guns. So why was she using one if she detests them so much? Oh, that’s right. She’s a liberal; and that means a hypocrite.
It must have been an on-campus restaurant. Campus security usually gives the tenured a free ride.
Because Bill Delahunt failed at his job of protecting the citizens.
Don’t see why you shouldn’t ask, and no reason why I shouldn’t answer. Fact is, too many people didn’t find her all that odd, made excuses for her bad behavior, and/or otherwise took no action to keep her from harming others or herself. Without reason to forbid it, there was no legal reason for her not to own a gun. But you may have a point. Maybe we need a constitutional amendment forbidding crazy people from owning weapons of any kind. That would allow us to disarm pretty much the entire left in this country and leave you eating with plastic cutlery.
Given her credentials, would Obama have considered her one of “the smartest people in the room?”
I guess we should be glad he didn’t offer her a cabinet post.
BTW, I am not arguing that the academics should get a free pass for criminal behavior, and I think the Harvard professor who went off on the cop got off too lightly. However, it doesn’t surprise me that our police force focuses their energy on other offenders, because there are many far more dangerous than these anger laden “i am doctor” crybabies, and police resources are limited.
The comparison is not between Bishop and Hasan. The way I see it, a comparison can be made between the co-workers and others in the lives of these two who ignored warning signs in fear of being labeled ‘bigot’ (Islamophobe, sexist).
Academia has replaced patriotism as the last refuge of scoundrels.
She also killed her brother in 1986.
Vinny,
Relax, it was a joke. I might have just as easily said Amy Bishop is the “Major Hasan” of academia.
I suggest you open a nice adult beverage and consume it until your sense of humor is restored…
BTw, as we are talking about the loony left does anyone find it odd that while Bishop was reloading her gun, the other academic professors all made for the floor and not a single person used the opportunity to grab her hands. Imagine being a plane with a terrorist and only such brave souls as our distiguished academics.
-Ship of fools.
Hi Dexter #39,
Please see my posts #23 and #25. I agree.
Dexter, I agree with your analogy.
txvet2, I concur.
I practice open carry (yes, RSS, we can LEGALLY do that in Virginia). If Dr. Bishop had attacked MY wife, she would’ve had to contend with me and my leetle friend. Cold steel in one’s ear will usually induce rapid changes in attitude. But, of course that event happened in disarmed Massatwosh*ts, where only the thugs are allowed to carry.
I find it interesting that the only place I have seen the Amy Bishop story carried is on NPR. Maybe they didn’t get the memo.
And I suspect that University of Alabama at Huntsville faculty offices may be one of the few places in Alabama where nobody else had a gun handy when this whack-job professor finally and literally went ballistic…
I work for a university and am part of threat assessment at the university. More often than not most of the time administrators and faculty turn a blind eye and hope nothing happens. When we addressed this one time with a student the Chronicle of Higher Ed itself published articles about our violation of civil rights. So don’t put too much emphasis in the Chronicle of Higher Ed. I am aware it is a student I am speaking of, but I have seen the attitude with professors. There are unions that administrators don’t want to take on with these issues.
I have been waiting for more of this to come forward. I am also waiting to see when the media begins making this a handgun and mental health issue. If this was a male professor you could bet he would be evil and not mentally ill. Accounts show some odd behavior, but they also show some very mean behavior as well. Being strange does not make you mentally ill. At this time until I see something different I am not willing to call her mentally ill. I am willing to say she is strange and very mean.
One more comment than I will cease and desist. It occurs to me that what we have here is a kind of academic Andrea Yates. How much longer before professional feminists, tenured or not, blame the husband (the marital equivalent of George Bush)?
The sad part is how the three faculty were murdered in cold blood at close range in a place where “civility” and “respect” are lauded as virtues of the intellectual community.
Have any of the MSM outlets covering this story used the term “cold-blooded murderer” to describe this reprobate?
Why is she being spun and coddled? Is white womanhood feared to be on trial here because one of their own mowed people down over her job status with a shotgun?
Can we call this the “Affirmative Action Murders?” Was she distraught because Sotomayor got her tenure on the Supreme Court? Was this a revenge killing?
White woman goes psycho because she didn’t get her way. Haven’t we heard this type of story before?
Think of the families who lost people to her gunfiring murderous rampage.
Tell me she didn’t plan to walk into that meeting and rack up a body count.
Bear1909 out.
I hadn’t heard that she reloaded. Is that in an article somewhere?
@KVal57, I have been thinking about purchasing a firearm and a holster for open carry but I realized I may encounter a situation where I don’t want to carry a firearm around with me all day. For example, my office may not permit me to carry a firearm in the office.
After a cursory glance at the concealed weapon laws in Virginia, it appears that if I take the firearm off and lock it in my automobile trunk then it becomes a concealed weapon. And I don’t have concealed carry permit.
Have you ever run into this situation? What do you do with your firearm when you encounter such situations?
Actually they said she was f’n goofy, and the administration figured if it was OK with Goofy it was OK with them. Besides, her sex life was none of their business.
Errah, Amazing how she looks quite sane next to Larry O Donnell’s pic!!!
I respectfully disagree with you John (#37) Think of what a service the Doctor could have rendered if she’d been appointed to a cabinet office, or even given a czarina post in the White House. Imagine what a houe-cleaning the Haaavaaad Doctor could have done there.
This woman needs a job in the Obama administration. She’s clearly crazy and stupid enough for pretty much any job Obama might have for her.
It wouldn’t make sense to me to not be able to carry an unloaded weapon in the trunk. Loaded is something else, but I think the concealed carry part probably would refer to the interior of the car – under the seat, in the glove box, etc. where it’s close at hand. On the other hand, I don’t know the statutory language in your state.
1. Convicted felons can not own firearms.
2. She was not charged in her brother’s death in 1986, or the alleged armed robbery of a car dealership at the same time.
3. She pled down the IHOP assault charge to a misdemeanor.
4. The ACLU has seen to it, until the Virginia Tech massacre, that people’s medical records are sacrosanct. So even psycho-beeotch Harvard educated loonies have had sanctuary.
From a FoxNews article:
First, Moriarity is an idiot. Someone shooting up co-workers can’t be ‘urged’ to stop. She should have punched Bishop’s friggin’ lights out.
Second, Moriarity got extremely lucky. She should be dead. Someone is looking out for her.
Third, Moriarity ended up being the hero once she realized she wasn’t dead and saw the chance to shove Bishop out the door.
Like the Ft Hood killer, the signs were all there …
This is the same scenario as Maj. Hasan. This psycho could never get away with her insanity in the private sector. Everybody’s afraid to get rid of the problem, so they let it fester into a murder rampage. It’s also the same scenario as the young woman recently killed by her psycho stalker. Sometimes the innocent have to take preemptive action in order to save themselves and others. Sadly, no one did in any of these cases.
Errah is there any info on where her gun was purchased or whether she had to prove mental proficiency to get her license. Its not like the take the 2nd ammendment seriously in Taxacheussetts or was this a recent purchase?
Okay. So, this guy has been married to Dr. NutCase for at least 17 years. What could that have been like? What is his mental state?
Just another leftie bitter clinger in a gun free zone we’ll probably find out she approved of, for everyone else.
Ng had every right at that point in time to grab that gun and beat Bishop to a pulp with it. Ah the rules of the old west.
FIFY. Glad to see student groups urging conceal carry on campus.
So the only thing that saved lives was the idiot professor didn’t maintain her firearm or was using substandard ammo.
Thank goodness she didn’t proprerly maintain her weapon or there would be a lot more open positions in the biology department at UAH…
I hadn’t seen that Fox account before.
Moriarity: “Excuse me, Dr. Bishop, but I feel compelled to point out that your behavior is somewhat antisocial and I believe, that with all due respect, you should take a moment to consider your actions before you resume this excessive use of force which is almost certainly contrary to the rules of conduct for university staff….”
Bishop: “Die! Die! Die! Why won’t this piece of crap shoot?”
Ahhhh, someone like me….sort of. Except that’s how I feel about nearly everyone in academia.
I also work in a large midwestern university. I am nauseated daily.
By the way; it’s not just the Professors (those with PhDs) who act entitled, spoiled, marxist, fascist, hippie, yippie, liberal–it’s also the doctoral students.
LOL.
Idiots.
That’s OK. We’re all vegetarians, and you don’t need silverware to eat lentils.
It seems that Congressman Delahunt has entered the Witness Protection Program.
…and while we’re at it, how about arresting that idiot husband too, just to shut him op? He seems completely indifferent about the murder of people he MUST have known, at least socially. Further, last night, I heard he was moaning that the poor Ms. Bishop “wasn’t doing well” in jail. Cue the world’s smallest violin.
Semi -OT
Speaking of indirect ties to Obama loving and America hating deranged academics, the parent Company of Com Ed, whose CEO was Bill Ayer’s father and helped him escape justice for domestic terrorism and wind up as an academic, does not want “arrogant Americans” to apply for jobs.
Or the universe’s loudest fart.
Obama admirers = violence prone, murderous whackjobs.
The science is settled.
BTW, I’m not a lawyer to begin with, and am really light on Massachusetts law, but if Delahunt hadn’t interfered, maybe Bishop would have gotten the mental health attention she needed, either after an insanity plea accepted by his office or a reduced plea with confinement to a hospital for the criminally insane, and maybe she wouldn’t be a murdering psycopath now.
Just a thought.
Narcissistic, sociopathic, liberal wackjob.
Wait…that describes the current Obama Administration and the majority in Congress.
This “Bad Seed” woman has FOUR children?
And how many years to turn them into good little murdering Leftard psychopaths?
The Horror! THE HORROR!
On February 17th, 2010 at 4:10 pm, WarEagle82 said:
War Eagle, as long as your weapon is in a locked compartment it is not considered to be concealed. If you have a lockable glove compartment in your vehicle, you can legally keep it in there loaded, as long as the glove box is LOCKED, because you cannot access it
as easily as if it were under your seat, etc.
Excuse me, what did I miss in your post? Or should I ask just how much does it take to qualify to be more dangerous for you…4, 5 or more killings?
I have worked in academia, and this would be considered “going to lunch.”
Yeah, didn’t this brilliant, if eccentric, biologist know it is WRONG to breed carbon-exhaling little monsters that will consume vast quantities non-renewable resources and speed the destruction of the planet?
Maybe she was just trying out a unique form of carbon offsets…
@KVal57, Thanks. I hadn’t carefully read the law so thanks for clarifying.
My trunk locks but my glove compartment doesn’t. I suppose I’ll have to take a course that covers all this so I don’t get busted when I make my purchase.
And, while I used to teach, rest assured I no longer do so the local colleges are safe either way…
Nope, RSS, that question is not verboten around here as you incorrectly assume. I would add, however, is why has this particular woman been coddled by (left-wing) academics and prosecutors since she reached adulthood?
Given her Harvard education, her benighted devotion to Barack Obama, and coupled with her history of violent and erratic behaviors, Dr. Bishop seems to be an ideal candidate for “education safety czar” or some such position in the current administration…
Another “Zombies for Obama” cultist.
I believe that Dr. Amy Bishop must be given intense psychoanalysis and rehabilitative therapy so that we can understand the reason why she murdered her colleagues.
Psychiatrists should feverishly work with her until moments before she is executed
That seems to be part of the problem here…nobody worried when they should have. Over. And over. And over.
Well, that pretty much shoots down the old Hippocratic oath and the “First, do no harm” theory!
Physician heal thyself!
What, what’s that you say? She’s not that kind of Doctor?! Oops, my bad!
The only thing that seems verboten around here is your ability to make sense.
Unless she has some sort of criminal history disallowing gun ownership, what else would deny her the ability to own one? A bad hair cut?
As long as other leftists let her off the hook, she didn’t have the documented history to keep her from owning a gun.
I bet she barely missed education czar.
Well said and agreed to…find why she was so messed up then hand out her punishment.
In the story I read, they shoved her out the door and barricaded it.
I thought, “nice, how many unsuspecting students were nearby?”
That was rather selfish and inconsiderate on their part wasn’t it…that fits the liberal mold, after all they were professors themselves.
No need. She’s nuts. Let it begin.
See how much tax money I saved?
I am trying to remember the last academic I met that could take on my 7 year old child.
That these people responded like they did is no surprise to me…
Since you were allowed to ask the question its silly to claim that it’s verboten.
She was allowed to have a gun because there was no reason to turn her down. She had no criminal record (thanks to now-Congressman Delahunt) and no official record of psychiatric problems.
Now you know if we don’t allow her therapy before punishing her for her crimes the left would be so hurt, calling us inhuman and all…ah what the hey, get it started.
I doubt she’ll be given a death sentence, in this day and age, and our present justice system. More likely, she’ll be committed to a psychiatric hospital, to spend the rest of her days. Based on what I’ve been seeing, it seems she has some serious mental problems. They should have been addressed long before she ever got to that school.
Amy Bishop a Tea Partier</a
Amy Reloaded during the shooting of her brother, too.
Verboten? No.. irrelevant. The obvious question to me is to ask why there are still people like you who actually believe that gun control laws reduce gun violence?
In every state that has adopted ‘shall issue’ concealed carry permit laws – violent gun crime has DECREASED.
However, just like Virginia Tech, the University of Alabama has a strict victim disarmament policy that makes the school an easy kill zone for nut cases like her. In my opinion those who wrote that policy have some blood on their hands too.
Looking at “Dr Bishop”‘s picture, it appears she missed the ship about ten years ago when the Heavens Gate cult left on Comet Hale Bopp.
Or she is Emo Phillips’ long lost sister.
