CBO to White House: We can’t score your health care crap sandwich

By Michelle Malkin  •  February 22, 2010 03:47 PM

Ok, they didn’t say “crap sandwich.”

But the message is clear on the CBO Director’s blog:

“This morning the Obama Administration released a description of its health care proposal, and CBO has already received several requests to provide a cost estimate for that proposal. We had not previously received the proposal, and we have just begun the process of reviewing it—a process that will take some time, given the complexity of the issues involved. Although the proposal reflects many elements that were included in the health care bills passed by the House and the Senate last year, it modifies many of those elements and also includes new ones. Moreover, preparing a cost estimate requires very detailed specifications of numerous provisions, and the materials that were released this morning do not provide sufficient detail on all of the provisions. Therefore, CBO cannot provide a cost estimate for the proposal without additional detail, and, even if such detail were provided, analyzing the proposal would be a time-consuming process that could not be completed this week.”

Long live transparency and the deliberative process!

The Republicans could, and should, say that without that cost estimate they will not attend the summit. Will they?
Unfortunately, I think it likely that the contempt the administration feels for the opposition, as evidenced by the latest piece of garbage, is warranted.

The Republican ground rules for participating in any discussions should begin with these:

There could, and should, be more pre-requisites; but these will suffice for starters.

I have been to the U.S. three times over the past twelve months to receive health care that I could not get in my home country of Canada. If the U.S. moves towards more government control in their health system, I will lose the benefit that the American private health care system provides me.

Many other people from around the world will also be hurt, because like me, they travel to the states to get the fastest, latest and best care available. I do have the option of going to China, as my wife is Chinese and can be my guide while there, however, the distance of China as compared to the U.S. would make it less attractive. I only live 2 hours from the border, 5 hours from Cleveland and 11 hours from Virginia. China is a 13 hour flight one way, plus jet lag etc.

Please think about those people living outside of the states. Many of us rely on you guys because our own governments have failed us!

In Canada, you have to wait months for a specialist whom you can’t chose yourself, you also wait for diagnostic tests and the longest wait is for surgery intervention. If you want a second opinion, well, as they say in Vegas – GOOD LUCK TO YOU!!!

You don’t have to wait for the CBO to tell you about the cost. It will be much more expensive than a private plan.

Again, speaking from my knowledge of the Canadian health care system, my government spends a little over $4000 per capita on health services.

For that $4000, we have inferior technology, less-qualified medical staff, extremely long wait times and it is getting worse.

To give you a example of our system, my provincial government of Ontario targets emergency room wait times for serious conditions at 4 hours and non-serious conditions at 8 hours. That’s only the target though. The average wait time in a hospital for emergencies often exceeds 7-8 hours and for non-emergency, it frequently will run you an 11 – 13 hour wait. Many emergency rooms in the province only have 1 doctor on shift even though there are often 20 or more patients waiting desperately to see him/her. You usually won’t get a CAT/MRI unless you have a really drastic condition because with limited resources they can’t ‘waste’ the better stuff unless you really ‘need it.’ The nurse, whom often can’t access you at all, makes the decision as to your priority level. I have learned to lie to the nurse in order to get bumped up and then change my story when the doctor checks over me. That way, I can usually shave 2 hours of my time.
