Report: White House offered GOP ex-Sen. Martinez a Stimulus Sunshine Sweetener

By Michelle Malkin  •  February 23, 2010 05:30 PM

Hey, that White House pay-for-play/culture of corruption file just keeps getting fatter and fatter. This morning, it was the Romanoff and Sestak deals. This afternoon, Reid Wilson at Hotline On Call reports that Team Obama offered retired GOP Sen. Mel Martinez a little Florida favor in exchange for a Porkulus vote.

They were willing to pay. This time, however, the bribe-ee wasn’t willing to play:

Ex-Sen. Mel Martinez (R-FL) could have named his price for his vote on last year’s stimulus bill, but he told the Obama admin there was nothing he wanted.

In an interview as he waited to catch a flight, Martinez said he could have had his own Cornhusker kickback, the derisive name GOPers have given to a deal cut with Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NE) in exchange for Nelson’s vote on health reform legislation.

During negotiations over the stimulus bill, Martinez said the WH asked him, “What do you have to have?”

“But I didn’t have to have anything,” he said he responded. “I didn’t want anything. I wanted a better bill.” Martinez said the talks were disillusioning when it came down to “how can we bribe you” for a vote.

Soooooo, why is Martinez backing the business-as-usual Good Time Charlie Crist to replace him?

It’s all part of the GOP cognitive dissonance between getting the message right but not changing the behavior. Everyone is partly pregnant and sometimes honest. Even Bill Bennett might come around to seeing that.

How corrupt is Obama? Let us count the Bribes.

At least in this case, a principled gov’t official.

nd speaking of the stimulus bill, why are democrats proud of the notion that porkulus MAY have created 2.1 million jobs???? That’s a cost $410,000 per job!!! And it’s highly likely they created no where near that many.

Only in liberal la-la-land is paying $410K for a $50K job a good deal.

Chicago-on-the-Potomac indeed. Hope-a-Dope is the guy, as I recall, who promised a new kind of politics — even though he never tried to push any kind of reform when he was back in Gangland. And now it’s plain just how serious he was about that promise.

Don’t know. Have you asked him?

Yeah? So why didn’t Martinez rat them out at the beginning? THAT would have been really interesting.

Phil, Martinez did not accept the bribe.

Our foe are the people who offerred it. That fact seems to have escaped the GOP haters.

    Message yesterday from Marc Levin:

“Do not forget that right now the GOP in Congress is outnumbered, but holding the line. We need to reinforce them as soon as we can.”

The Great One is correct. Levin also pointed out the GOP does not want to destroy the private sector and take over the health and banking systems. The GOP does not want to burn the Constitution and implement tyranny.

We have had our say with the GOP. Look at your calendar. We will not like all they do, but there comes a point when we have to work with them, if you want the majority in D.C. tossed out.

Rush said today, he wonders if the GOP haters will have any left over to direct towards the Progressives. I think his concern is valid.

Old Boys Club, pure and simple. It’s how the old GOP rolls. This is why new blood is good, and necessary.

Rush Limbaugh said pretty much the same thing in the 1st year of the so-called Republican Revolution of 1994 to those voters who backed it and found those pesky non-conservative Republicans gumming things up for a conservative agenda even then…I’m not sure Rush has learned anything since then; However, I have.

If anyone who is in the pretense of a government position wishes to keep their job he/she had better be expected to be scrutinized. We conservatives run out of rightful anger??…Do living things breathe?? Please!

Then why is Martinez doing an about face by endorsing Cahrlie “Hug Obama Stimulus” Crist? Perhaps there is an important fact that has escaped your attention…

It just seems to me that, in essence, the GOP really doesn’t care about this particular issue among many others..which is why they go back and forth on this issue and that issue like an eye-rolling WWF wrestling monologue between opponents (designed to entertain you).

If the Rush and Levin are worried about us “GOP haters”, the solution is for the party leadership to step down, not for us to knuckle under to them. That is why we are “GOP haters” in the first place. I am perfectly ready to write off Rush and Levin if they turn out to be the final peel in the onion before we get to what we want: conservative takeover of the GOP.

Mel Martinez was my senator and during the illegal immigrant amnesty event I called his office several times. I finally got exasperated with his aide one day and told her that Mr. Martinez is under an illusion that he is a Mexican Senator and not a United States Senator. She hung up on me and I gave up calling and changed my registration to Independent from Republican. I was a Republican since Reagan’s first term when I turned 18. After Martinez, and his ilk like Bush and McCain, I became a Independent and will remain that for the rest of my life. I don’t need the Republican Party, but they sure need people like me to continue to donate and vote for them.

RINOs can burn in hell with their democrat friends.

Something to remember about Mel, Crist, and the other old-school GOP members in the Sunshine State. Rank-and-file voters have had their fill. When the lovely Sarah Palin showed up for a rally in Jacksonville, they received tepid, yet respectful, applause because of their liberal tendencies.

Even GOP Rep. Ander Crenshaw who hadn’t met a pork project he didn’t like was greeted with restraint. True conservatives are fed up with the spend-lots-but-keep-it-less-than-dems old-guard Rockefeller Republicans.

Rubio is crushing Crist. And GOP insiders are still wondering why.

WERE landrieu and nelson in positions of power. YES. Did the wh give them a valuable item in order to secure their vote. YES. PER SE bribery.

The Republican Party under GWB seems intent on political suicide. Pandering to citizens of other countries illegally in our country while telling us we must be vigilantes if we object to illegal aliens ignoring our borders and laws. Mel Martinez was RNC Chairman to ensure an open borders candidate in ’08. The cheap labor express will be kept running, regardless of the consequences, to party or country.
