Culture of corruption watch: Rangel broke ethics rules, 4 other CBC members exonerated

So, now what? Wrist slap? NAACP National Treasure award? What?

Via The Hill/AP:

The House ethics panel has found that Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) broke ethics rules, according to the Associated Press.

The AP reported that Rangel knowingly accepted Caribbean trips in violation of House rules forbidding hidden financing by corporations.

Rangel said he had done nothing wrong and expected the report to show he was not guilty of anything.

“All I know is, the ethics committee authorized the trip and there is no way in the world that there could be any report out there that says I was not authorized to travel,” Rangel said. He added: “When you read the report, you will see that I am not guilty of anything.”

Via Politico:

The House ethics committee has found Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charlie Rangel violated ethics rules by accepting corporate-funded trips to the Caribbean, according to House sources.

Rangel told POLITICO Thursday night that he was being “admonished” by the committee on the grounds that at least two members of his staff knew about the corporate funding for the trips – and that Rangel himself should have known.

“I’m satisfied that when you read the report, that you will see that I have not been found guilty of anything,” Rangel said. “We were approved, the trip was approved. Whether or not it should have been approved is a serious issue.”

Rangel said that “the critical part in the report is they’re saying the ethics committee should not have authorized it if they had known all the facts — that some private funds were involved in the payment of the conference.”

Reps. Carolyn Kilpatrick (D-Mich.), Donald Payne (D-N.J.), Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) and Del. Donna Christensen (D-V.I.) also participated in the trips, but a source told the Associated Press that they have been exonerated by the committee.

Rangel is still entangled in several other ethics messes.

Flashback: Tax cheat Rangel caught on tape: “Why don’t you mind your goddamned business?”

Honestly, Michelle, I’ll be more taken aback when I read someday that Charlie Rangel actually did something legally or ethically.

As they say, power corrupts…but Charlie Rangel is just a corrupt, sleazebag…absolutely.

So blatant financing of trips to the Caribbean is ok – that’s a relief.

How was it that the trip was approved in the first place? What questions were asked? I would think one important question would have been, ‘who is paying for the trip?’

Rep Rangel’s explanation and putting it off on staffers is wrong. Why didn’t he ask who was paying for the trip.

If you won your seat every two years by a 95%+ margin…and Nancy Pelosi was guarding your hen house…would you really give a flying flip?

Besides, the guy is a “Korean War Veteran” AND he is “Black,” so…step off, zyzzyg, just step off bro.

    Or more blatently, “stop snitchin’.”

BTW – Doesn’t Nancy Pelosi repeatedly win her seat by 95%+ margins as well? And, in 23+years in the US House, I believe she hasn’t had to debate a challenge to her Seat once…so what the HELL does Nancy Pelosi care what Charlie Rangel does with other people’s money?

    See the problem here?

Well of course he doesn’t expect to be found guilty of anything. Why should he? They’ve been robbing us our entire lives and living by a different set of rules in the process. Since when do they have to abide by the law? Although they take an oath to protect and preserve the Constitution, there isn’t any legal mechanism available to convict them for being amoral liars.

We may still be fighting socialism at our level, but they have been living it already. They honestly don’t believe there is anything they can’t do. Judging by the lack of indictments for tax-fraud, illegal campaign contributions, voter fraud, misuse of public funds, etc…, they may be right.

You have to love his response. Well, if I knowlingly did something wrong it’s not my fault because somebody said I could do something wrong. Blame the ethics committeee for letting me knowingly do something wrong.

Let’s just say it. Rangel stays in office because he’s black. Anybody else doing what he does is fired or resigns within a week. Toss his criminal black ass out. They should have also tossed out Geitner’s criminal white ass. That should help all you race mongers feel the equality in my hatred for these criminals.

Isn’t that just special. All went to the same place, did the same thing, and porked out at the same slop trough, but these four were exonerated. How does that possibly happen? I do believe that Carolyn Kirkpatrick testified that she thought her son Kwame payed for the trips. The penal system was supplying him with room and board so he had money left over in his household budget.

And yes, you guys are correct, this corrupt politician (redundant, I know) will be re-elected in his district. His constituency will see it as “a brother sticking it to the man”. Unless corruption is stamped out (at least contained), the country will fall even more quickly. The “ethics committee” is a joke and serves only as a “figurehead” to placate the public. I have yet to see them take any action that has teeth.

It is unbelievable how so many scumbags rise to the top in politics. Rangel has crook written all over him. I wouldn’t get in the same elevator with this piece of trash, and yet the imbecilic voters re-elect him.

With these kind of characters in charge, there is little hope that waste and abuse in any system of our government can be eliminated. And Obama speaks to cleaning up our health care system to provide the funds to help pay for his new entitlement program of free medical care for all of god’s children. What a joke.

Why is there no just and swift action taken in these cases? Rangel should be thrown out of office and jailed, along with many others. I guess there really isn’t anything the citizenry can do. Even voting new people in just starts the process all over. Heck of a life isn’t it!

So Nancy has a “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy for the House? As long as the Congressman doesn’t know who’s paying they’re not violating ethics.
HELLLOOO???!!! It’s their responsibility to ask, just like it’s their responsibility to fill out their disclosure forms in full.

If the Dems won’t kick him out, can’t we at least get someone to run against him? Of course, being from NJ, I unfortunately know the answer.
