Pelosi on Rangel: Big deal, it’s not like he endangered national security or anything

By Michelle Malkin  •  March 1, 2010 10:05 AM

The House Speaker who promised the most ethical Congress ever is stalling on action against corruptocrat Democrat Rep. Charlie Rangel. And she’s gone even further by minimizing his ethics violations because they haven’t endangered national security.

Business as usual:

Rep. Charlie Rangel’s admonishment for violating House gift rules “is not good,” but his actions did not put the nation at risk in any material way, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Sunday.

Pelosi said it is not her place to interfere in any investigations of the matter and said she would not get involved politically.

“But the fact is, is that what Mr. Rangel has been admonished for is not good,” she said on ABC’s “This Week.” “It was a violation of the rules of the House. It was not a–something that jeopardized our country in any way.”

The broader ethics investigation of Rangel’s past tax practices, financial disclosures and personal property arrangements is still ongoing.

But hey, it’s not like those jeopardize our country in any way! Right, Speaker Spic-and-Span?

Now, now–of all people, the House Speaker should know rules are there for a reason. Unless…unless she’s making some kind of moral equivalency? Really?

However, if he was a conservative, she would have immediately called for an impeachment and censure, along with demonstrations in the streets. MSM would have been screaming for “his head on a platter.” Politics and hypocrisy. They fit together well.

The donks’ problem for at least a generation has been not only their refusal to take out their garbage, but their celebration of thwarting the trash collector.

When I was working for a law office in Olympia, Washington a decade ago, we represented some property management companies that managed Section 8 HUD housing in Seattle. Whenever we dealt with trash hoarders, it was always the same: they had to be dragged out kicking and screaming before anyone could get in there and start removing the piled-up-to-the-ceiling crap in every room. They never gave up willingly, or reasonably.

So it is with the donks’ fouling of the nation’s capitol … although instead of patiently and gently removing them, the solution we came up with for Japanese holdouts in the caves of Iwo Jima and Okinawa would be much, much more satisfying.

Let me get this straight. Climate change is a threat to national security but a high ranking congressman selling his office to corporate America for a few fringe benefits is not? If Rangel is willing to compromise house rules and his own ethics for a free vacation, what would he not be willing to do?

Rangel claims it was his staff’s fault for not informing him. Yet, they sent him two memos and a letter warning him. Even if we give him the benefit of a doubt that he didn’t read them, he had to know that somebody else was paying since he didn’t sign any checks himself. If you cared about your ethics and integrity, wouldn’t you want to know why you never received a bill for your vacation to the Caribbean?

This brings up another question: why is it not a violation of House rules to have your taxpayer-funded staff arrange your personal vacations? Is it ok to have them wash your car and mow your lawn, too?
