Obama’s war on fishing?!?!?!
Longtime readers know I love to fish and have been at war with the anti-fishing nuts at PETA for years.
JWF flags a story today from ESPN about Obama regulatory maneuvers that look to limit fishing access:
The Obama administration will accept no more public input for a federal strategy that could prohibit U.S. citizens from fishing the nation’s oceans, coastal areas, Great Lakes, and even inland waters.
This announcement comes at the time when the situation supposedly still is “fluid” and the Interagency Ocean Policy Task Force still hasn’t issued its final report on zoning uses of these waters.
That’s a disappointment, but not really a surprise for fishing industry insiders who have negotiated for months with officials at the Council on Environmental Quality and bureaucrats on the task force. These angling advocates have come to suspect that public input into the process was a charade from the beginning.
“When the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) completed their successful campaign to convince the Ontario government to end one of the best scientifically managed big game hunts in North America (spring bear), the results of their agenda had severe economic impacts on small family businesses and the tourism economy of communities across northern and central Ontario,” said Phil Morlock, director of environmental affairs for Shimano.
“Now we see NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) and the administration planning the future of recreational fishing access in America based on a similar agenda of these same groups and other Big Green anti-use organizations, through an Executive Order by the President. The current U.S. direction with fishing is a direct parallel to what happened in Canada with hunting: The negative economic impacts on hard working American families and small businesses are being ignored.
Sacrificing jobs for the green agenda. Conducting Kabuki theater on public input. Business as usual for the Obama White House.

One day a new Fish & game warden came across two guys fishing. “Ok, guys” he said, “let’s see your licenses.”
One of the guys jumps up and takes off running. The warden gives chase and four or five minutes later manages to catch him.
“Wait!” cries the guy. “I have a license!” and shows it to the warden.
“Well, if you had a license, why the hell did you run?” he asks.
“My friend didn’t have one.”

This may be perhaps the nuttiest idea yet to come out of the Obama administration. Even entertaining this idea with any degree of seriousness shows how pitifully ill-prepared Obama is to be an executive at any level.
This is as loonie as the idea he pursued to have wounded soldiers pick up their rehab costs through their private insurance.
He has no clue what goes on in the real world. COSMIC!

Fishing has as long and storied a history as hunting- only comprising more people because it does not involve firearms (except for places in the south- you know who you are). They motor out to a little cove, Joe reaches in his tackle box and grabs a stick of dynamite and lights it and throws it as far as he can. BOOM….Fish float up everywhere and Joe scoops them up with a net.

In Oregon, you can be out in the boonies and come across a meth cooking facility, pot farm or just nasty cons waiting to rob, rape and steal from you.

The forest just inland from both Cannon Beach and Astoria is a very popular meth cooking area. I’m not saying everytime you venture into the woods you will stumble across them but you are definately taking your chances without being armed.
Not too many people I know go off the road without some sort of protection.

Texas has a huge wild hog population that is costing millions in economic damage.They breed like rats.The state is trying to figure how to eradicate them and there is alot of talk about it.A wise old man told me this past weekend that the eradication idea needs to be halted because the hogs may be our food source if things keep going the way they are.I tend to agree.

I finally got around to going fishing this morning – but after a while,
I ran out of worms. Then I saw a cottonmouth with a frog in his mouth,
and frogs are good bass bait.
Knowing the snake couldn’t bite me with the frog in his mouth, I grabbed
him right behind the head, took the frog and put it in my bait bucket.
Now the dilemma was how to release the snake without getting bitten – I
grabbed my bottle of Jack Daniels and poured a little whiskey in its
mouth. His eyes rolled back, he went limp! I released him into the lake
without incident and carried on with my fishing, using the frog as bait.
A little later, I felt a nudge on my foot.. There was that damn snake
with two frogs in his mouth!
This will definitely infringe on my pursuit of happiness.

The only time I ever fished was with a friend that owned a bait that shop took me out after closing
and baited my hook and took off whatever I caught – that and a bottle of bubbly and a couple of crystal glasses was OK. I swear, I don’t know if a flashlight was involved.
However, I eat a lot of fish/shellfish and find it harder by the day to find any caught in U.S. waters. Every doc is telling us to eat more fish with Omega-3′s. Impossible, unless you eat Salmon that is farm-raised (nevermind it’s dyed to turn it red, otherwise it’s a nasty gray color).
Couldn’t a case be made that the second ammendment covers fishing poles? You can have my rod and reel when you pry them from my cold dead hands! – Charleton Heston mash up.

Our fishermen are having hard times but everything I look at in the fish counter is from somewhere else.

Yes, cutting off input is a valid criticism, however recieving input would have to end at some point.
The WWF and IFAW are not the NOAA, and how is it known what the agendas are for these different organizations? It would be helpful if the agendas of each were spelled out vice intimating that the agendas are the same.
Bears are not fish and common sense would ‘speculate’ that the approach for each would be somewhat different. You can catch and release a fish but not so much with bears.
Will the report address the businesses that operate catch and release tours?
Yes, being aware of the preparation of the report is a good thing. Knowing that input was recieved is also a good thing.
But, shouldn’t waiting to read the report and seeing what it says first, be crucial before suggesting what it will, or will not, call for and lead to?
Finally, why is it only NOAA that is involved in preparing the report? What happened to Interior, BLM, Wild Life and Fisheries, et al?

Commercial and recreational fishermen and women need to stay united, they would like nothing better than to divide us. People all across America may not care if a couple of thousand commercial fishermen are put out of business this summer by PEW/NOAA, but I think we all should care. I’m not much of a fisher myself, but my bro has devoted his life to it, he loves to fish. And slowly but surely they have putting him out of business, the last straw comes on May 1st unless we can stop these fools.

I, admittedly, do NOT support unregulated fishing as it is a statistical fact that when our natural resources are opened up to the public with unbridled access, the public has a nasty habit of destroying it (refering to the destructive fishing habits in the Pacific Northwest in the recent past)
However, moves like these are nothing short of political power plays – it is all about CONTROL.
On this note, Obama’s administration is also drafting a bill to take over millions of acres of farmland – I hope someone can investigate this further, as well
The farmland he wants to take over in Utah (by the way the feds already have taken 57% of land in Utah)is rich in crude oil so all of the lease owned by Exxon and others are null and void. This guy is on a one way destruction tour of the US!

OH, and the bottomline line is that President Obama is not having a ‘war on fishing’. Though you might want to check your home State’s laws which do far more to circumvent your fishing activities.
Maybe you knew, but the author of the exceprt is suggesting the agenda used to deal with bears is the same agenda used to deal with fish. Not to mention, the bears in the excerpt are in Canada, and the fish are in the US.

I suppose, but when does the truth become important? People are saying things (making conclusions) based on speculation (guesses).
When do facts matter? Why spin yourself into a tizzy based on misinformation (not reading the actual report or seeing the referenced agendas)?
Moreover, individual States have greater oversight with regard to fishing and hunting. States and municipalities have more rules and regulations concerning time (when), weight, licensing and size of what you hunt or fish.
Lastly, you would do well to speak for yourself and not to the motives of other posters and why they do what they do. They are an independant lot and can speak for themselves.
