Obama’s war on fishing?!?!?!

By Michelle Malkin  •  March 9, 2010 05:00 PM

Longtime readers know I love to fish and have been at war with the anti-fishing nuts at PETA for years.

JWF flags a story today from ESPN about Obama regulatory maneuvers that look to limit fishing access:

The Obama administration will accept no more public input for a federal strategy that could prohibit U.S. citizens from fishing the nation’s oceans, coastal areas, Great Lakes, and even inland waters.

This announcement comes at the time when the situation supposedly still is “fluid” and the Interagency Ocean Policy Task Force still hasn’t issued its final report on zoning uses of these waters.

That’s a disappointment, but not really a surprise for fishing industry insiders who have negotiated for months with officials at the Council on Environmental Quality and bureaucrats on the task force. These angling advocates have come to suspect that public input into the process was a charade from the beginning.

“When the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) completed their successful campaign to convince the Ontario government to end one of the best scientifically managed big game hunts in North America (spring bear), the results of their agenda had severe economic impacts on small family businesses and the tourism economy of communities across northern and central Ontario,” said Phil Morlock, director of environmental affairs for Shimano.

“Now we see NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) and the administration planning the future of recreational fishing access in America based on a similar agenda of these same groups and other Big Green anti-use organizations, through an Executive Order by the President. The current U.S. direction with fishing is a direct parallel to what happened in Canada with hunting: The negative economic impacts on hard working American families and small businesses are being ignored.

Sacrificing jobs for the green agenda. Conducting Kabuki theater on public input. Business as usual for the Obama White House.

One day a new Fish & game warden came across two guys fishing. “Ok, guys” he said, “let’s see your licenses.”

One of the guys jumps up and takes off running. The warden gives chase and four or five minutes later manages to catch him.

“Wait!” cries the guy. “I have a license!” and shows it to the warden.

“Well, if you had a license, why the hell did you run?” he asks.

    “My friend didn’t have one.”

This may be perhaps the nuttiest idea yet to come out of the Obama administration. Even entertaining this idea with any degree of seriousness shows how pitifully ill-prepared Obama is to be an executive at any level.

This is as loonie as the idea he pursued to have wounded soldiers pick up their rehab costs through their private insurance.

That is because he knows that very few of the people would support this, so as with healthcare, he is saying the time for debate is over. I’ve heard you and now I will ignore what I’ve heard and do what I wanted to do in the first place!

They motor out to a little cove, Joe reaches in his tackle box and grabs a stick of dynamite and lights it and throws it as far as he can. BOOM….Fish float up everywhere and Joe scoops them up with a net.
The warden said you can’t do that, you have broken numerous laws I am going to have to arrest you. Joe reaches in the tackle box once more pulls out another stick, lights it and hands it to the game warden as he asked. are you gonna fish or are you gonna talk

Speculating about what an unreleased report will say about fishing because something about bears in Canada is a reach.

Yes, cutting off input is a valid criticism, however recieving input would have to end at some point.

The WWF and IFAW are not the NOAA, and how is it known what the agendas are for these different organizations? It would be helpful if the agendas of each were spelled out vice intimating that the agendas are the same.

Bears are not fish and common sense would ‘speculate’ that the approach for each would be somewhat different. You can catch and release a fish but not so much with bears.

Will the report address the businesses that operate catch and release tours?

Yes, being aware of the preparation of the report is a good thing. Knowing that input was recieved is also a good thing.

But, shouldn’t waiting to read the report and seeing what it says first, be crucial before suggesting what it will, or will not, call for and lead to?

Finally, why is it only NOAA that is involved in preparing the report? What happened to Interior, BLM, Wild Life and Fisheries, et al?

I would say that you have no idea what has been going on already. They have people dressed in fish costumes on the public pier telling kids not to fish because its cruel to the fish. They have loonies at the seafood restaurants protesting the eating of fish.

Actually it’s worst than just loonies and zealots hawking the issue. Bad enough our kids are green-washed at school, there’re members of the NYC City Council who’d like (undoubtedly with soyburger Bloomberg’s blessing) to place a sin-tax on beef products to “help promote preventative medicine.” So no, with “animal rights” and Greenpeace proxies like these undermining our choice and lifestyle, I take even the loonies very seriously. They thought Hitler was a loonie in that beer hall too.

This is shocking in one sense, but not at all surprising given who we are talking about here.

Who might be able to bring public awareness to this issue in order to preserve the American tradition of feeding families from nature’s bounty?

Who might be well suited to inspire and then lead a people’s revolt against this type of regulatory tyranny?

Who could bring the American public’s attention to this liberty killing power grab, and point out that if sport fishing regulation of this type is successful, then how far behind will on-land hunting be, and ultimately the Second Amendment itself?

Who might be capable of being the American people’s Anti-Obama, so that the White House will have no choice but to hear them loud and clear?

Who would have instant credibility with the fishing industry, the sport hunting industry, the Second Amendment activists, and combine that with a high public profile and appeal to change the center of gravity in the debate for the better?

You get one guess, and it’s not John Kerry.

    Then I answered the question:

    Ok, guessing time is up.

Sarah Palin. This is tailor made for her, given her background and public profile, and access to the media focus, both friendly and hostile.

She would destroy them on this, no doubt in my mind whatsoever.

Having been Governor of Alaska, which has more marine coastline than all 49 other states combined, and 3 million freshwater lakes, plus rivers and streams all over the place, she is uniquely positioned to be the point person for opposition to this insanity.

She is a commercial and sport fisherman, avid hunter, and Second Amendment advocate with experience running the state that depends on these industries for it’s economy more than any other. She can focus attention on the consequences, both to the economies of states like Alaska, and to erosion of Constitutional freedoms for all Americans.

The MSM would have no choice but to try and attack her to knock her down, but the attention will boomerang on them because, like most other things, she is on the side of %70-80 of Americans, where Obama and his people are not.

Paging Sarah Palin, your country needs you again.

Isn’t this issue just screaming for a Facebook post, followed by a FNC appearance and/or a major newspaper op-ed? Man, Palin would just roast these statists with this one.

Sarah, go get ‘em girl! This is a meatball right over the plate, all you have to do is swing battah, swing!

Thank you MM for running with this story. What they are doing to the commercial fishermen is even worse. Commercial and recreational fishermen and women need to stay united, they would like nothing better than to divide us. People all across America may not care if a couple of thousand commercial fishermen are put out of business this summer by PEW/NOAA, but I think we all should care. I’m not much of a fisher myself, but my bro has devoted his life to it, he loves to fish. And slowly but surely they have putting him out of business, the last straw comes on May 1st unless we can stop these fools.

Can’t happen. The Congress now recognizes that “Aquatic Americans”(fish) are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of worms, minnows, grubs and such.

I, admittedly, do NOT support unregulated fishing as it is a statistical fact that when our natural resources are opened up to the public with unbridled access, the public has a nasty habit of destroying it (refering to the destructive fishing habits in the Pacific Northwest in the recent past)

However, moves like these are nothing short of political power plays – it is all about CONTROL.

On this note, Obama’s administration is also drafting a bill to take over millions of acres of farmland – I hope someone can investigate this further, as well

(Hint zzygy: sometimes a thread is started because it’s fun to speculate and the posters know its speculation but its fun to play along.)

Maybe you knew, but the author of the exceprt is suggesting the agenda used to deal with bears is the same agenda used to deal with fish. Not to mention, the bears in the excerpt are in Canada, and the fish are in the US.

    “Fun to play along.”

I suppose, but when does the truth become important? People are saying things (making conclusions) based on speculation (guesses).

When do facts matter? Why spin yourself into a tizzy based on misinformation (not reading the actual report or seeing the referenced agendas)?

Moreover, individual States have greater oversight with regard to fishing and hunting. States and municipalities have more rules and regulations concerning time (when), weight, licensing and size of what you hunt or fish.

Lastly, you would do well to speak for yourself and not to the motives of other posters and why they do what they do. They are an independant lot and can speak for themselves.
