Making their voices heard: Protesting Demcare on Capitol Hill

By Michelle Malkin  •  March 16, 2010 09:58 AM

They only had a few days to mobilize, but bus loads of Tea Party protesters from across the country have descended on Washington today to make their voices heard on the Demcare cramdown.

Time: March 16, 2010 from 9am to 6pm
Location: Cannon House Office Building
Street: Independence Avenue SE and New Jersey SE
City/Town: Washington, DC
More info.

As of this morning, the Democrats and the House Rules Committee still have not posted the actual reconciliation bill text.

How’s the No-mentum going?

Via Politico:

Rep. Jason Altmire, a Pennsyvlania Democrat who has positioned himself as a key swing vote, said he thinks leadership is seriously struggling to marshal the votes. “They’re calling the hardnosed people…who have put out firm statements saying no,” he said. “They wouldn’t be doing that if they were anywhere close.”

The whip counts keep fluctuating and it’s anyone’s guess, but Democrat pro-life leader Bart Stupak thinks House Dem leaders are at least 16 short.

The libs sure have changed their tune on how to treat Tea Party protesters. Here’s a memo excerpt from House #2 Democrat Rep. Chris Van Hollen:

In a memo sent to freshman and sophomore lawmakers, Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), a member of the House leadership, urges lawmakers to make special accomodations to prepare for the protesters, ranging from refreshments to extra staff members.

“Activists are expected to begin arriving around 9am and they have been given instructions to wait in your office until they can have a meeting,” the memo says. “Please have an orderly process and enough staff and interns to welcome what could be a very large number of visitors throughout the day.”

Among the suggestions:

Consider having some light snacks, H2O, and coffee available;

Have multiple guest books/comment sheets available for all visitors to sign-in and leave comments

Have a Capitol Directory and map available to direct visitors to their Member of Congress and written instructions on how to get over to the Senate side of the Hill

Listen and communicate in small groups:

But lawmakers and their staff should also understand that the tea partiers are reacting merely to a “caricature of the reform bill presented by right-wing media outlets” and aren’t intimately familiar with the legislation, the memo says.

“[D]on’t assume common myths about this bill have been debunked,” lawmakers are told. “Be prepared to explain that there are no death panels, that Medicare is in fact strengthened, and that reform is not a government take-over, but it is an attempt to crack down on the abusive practices of health insurance companies by providing oversight and increasing competition.”

Tea Party activists sure have come a long way — from being greeted by Purple Shirted-Hounds and race-card players and conspiracy theorists and vulgarians…to “light snacks, H20, and coffee” with Talky McTalkingPoints aides on the Hill.

But they’re still not listening.

Get louder. Remember: There are no inevitabilities in Washington. Demcare is not a fait accompli. Stop it now, don’t rely on politicians to repeal it later.

And note well: The government health care Trojan Horse is riding in a bigger Trojan Horse for Nancy Pelosi’s Big Guv agenda:

Pelosi said passing the bill would allow Dems to undertake a “debate” with Republicans over “what is the balanced role that government should have.”

“We have to take it to the American people, to say, this is the choice that you have,” she said. “This is the vision that they have for your health and well being, and this is the vision that we have.”…

Pelosi also sought to reassure those unhappy with the Senate bill by stressing that future legislation would follow, suggesting that after they passed this legislation Dems might try to do away with the insurance industry’s antitrust exemption, among other unnamed initiatives.

“Kick open that door, and there will be other legislation to follow,” she said. “We’ll take the country in a new direction.”

Yeah: Hurtling down the progressive cliff.

***

Let them laugh. They’ve been trying to minimize the Tea Party movement all year.

When they do, ask them for the details on each talking point. Try not to laugh as they squirm.

I am especially interested in how cutting $500 billion from Medicare as Baby Boomers flood into the program “strengthens” it. If this statement does not confrm in your mind that they think we are just too stupid to care for ourselves nothing ever will.

Make sure you ak them to show you in writing what the projected costs are and the list of benefits. That will be fun too.

    Noah Webster’s 1828 Dictionary
    LIB’ERTY, n. [L. libertas, from liber, free.]

    1. Freedom from restraint, in a general sense, and applicable to the body, or to the will or mind. The body is at liberty, when not confined; the will or mind is at liberty, when not checked or controlled. A man enjoys liberty, when no physical force operates to restrain his actions or volitions.

    2. Natural liberty, consists in the power of acting as one thinks fit, without any restraint or control, except from the laws of nature. It is a state of exemption from the control of others, and from positive laws and the institutions of social life. This liberty is abridged by the establishment of government.

    3. Civil liberty, is the liberty of men in a state of society, or natural liberty, so far only abridged and restrained, as is necessary and expedient for the safety and interest of the society, state or nation. A restraint of natural liberty, not necessary or expedient for the public, is tyranny or oppression. civil liberty is an exemption from the arbitrary will of others, which exemption is secured by established laws, which restrain every man from injuring or controlling another. Hence the restraints of law are essential to civil liberty.

The liberty of one depends not so much on the removal of all restraint from him, as on the due restraint upon the liberty of others.

The drug wars, the abductions and gangland murders, the illegal aliens coming over the border, people living in trash heap shantytowns, etc. are legacies of that rule even with the center-right in power now. The Democrat-Socialists are using healthcare to ensure they are power for decades, and to ensure the Republicans or any other rival party is basically more of the same.

Worst case scenario is something akin to Venezuela, Cuba, or China. With our left populated by angry people out for “social justice,” i.e. revenge against the White Man, I wouldn’t say that scenario is totally off the table.

There are days in my life when everything is dreary
I grow pessimistic, sad and world weary.
But when I’m tearful and fearfully upset
I always sing this merry little minuet:

    “They’re rioting in Africa

    There’s hurricanes in Florida
    And Texas needs rain.

    “The whole world is festering
    With unhappy souls
    The French hate the Germans,

    “Italians hate Yugoslavs
    South Africans hate the Dutch
And I don’t like anybody very much”

This type of comment makes me realize how horrid DC has become. They are encouraging myths. Taking 500B from Medicare will not strengthen it. They call ‘strengthening’ Medicare increasing costs by adding to the prescription drug program that they excoriate R’s for passing in the fist place.

The myth is they strengthen Medicare. The REALITY is that Medicare will still have to be fixed if this monstrosity of a spending bill gets passed.

While there aren’t any death panels, they do intend to bankrupt the states with Medicaid unfunded liabilities. The more they pawn off on the states, the better the federal books look. They’ll pay for it for a few years, but after that it’s on the states’ books.

The ‘leadership’ in DC is pathetic. Their only goal is to find out how much of our money we will allow them to spend.

They need to FIX MEDICARE. THAT is the federal government’s main health care priority. . . or it should be. If you took all the 12 B in profit from the biggest insurance companies of last year, it wouldn’t make up 25% of the 60B lost in waste and fraud in Medicare.

The problem is Medicare. This Obamacare does nothing to fix Medicare and lawmakers will have to make the difficult decisions concerning it within the decade. . . even after this ‘historic’ bill passes.

THe way I understand it, that would not be a bad thing. The States had insisted on the anti-trust exemption so that they could exert controls over the insurance companies – but that led to the situation where only certain companies are allowed in the state, killing competition. Removing the anti-trust exemption is a necessary step in promoting competition across state lines.

I’m no expert on is, but that’s the way I understand it. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

Dateline Monday March 15, Location: Strongsville, Ohio. President Sock Puppet said that ObamaCare will reduce health insurance premiums by “3,000 percent.”

Not in the base 50 states, but in the other 7 where 10,000 people hadn’t been killed by a tornado…

Actually, I think he meant to say that after including 30 million illegal aliens including his Aunty Squatter, the cost will be 3000% higher – to be paid for by the 49% who pay taxes.

The Balance that Pelosi will now DEMAND is one of fairness. Pelosi wants the federal government to now begin the process of eugenics in order to purify the healthcare system for the good of all.

Pelosi wants the debate to begin on the death panels national Eugenics program. When to simply give the people the red pill, when to tell a mother her baby MUST be aborted.

This has ALWAYS been the final solution of the progressives.

    Pelosi is AH in drag.

Barry Hussein, the liar-in-chief, is a virtual Jack-in-the-box, pops up everywhere to perpetrate his tall tale.

Harry Reid is Bernie, propped up mainly by Barry’s false assurances the latter will help the former’s reelection bid.

How did we ever end up with these three? Let’s make sure they are kicked out ASAP!

OMG – ol’ stretch face just basically said to Meg Kelly that those that are upset about this bill are CONFUSED! This from a certifiable moron that can’t keep her stories straight, can’t tell the truth to grown-ups, and if her false teeth are chattering it’s a lie. Man, I’m torked.

Where do liberals go to school? Not one of them can walk and chew gum at the same time. Not one of them appears to know how to balance a checkbook. We’ve allowed them to completely destroy our economy to the point we’re one click away from being downgraded from our AAA rating, our foreign policy is bent on getting us into some kind of war – or worse, capitulating to our enemies, they’re in the process of centralizing more of our education programs, they want to assume the responsibility to advise you on how you should eat….and that’s just for starters.

‘Bambi wants to be loved and adored. It’s like a controlled substance to him. The Narcissus in Charge is going to find out what it feels like to be shunned, scorned, and loathed. That’s when you’ll see the real guy emerge. Thank the Almighty we have so many men and women that have served their country and can still remember how to defend it.

I am done with these Dems. Done!!! Their attitude is: Let’s laugh at the American people, mock them, because they’re trying to derail our grand utopia. I got news for these people: your precious moderates, gays, unionists, women, and minorities can’t save you when there’s a united population against this bill.

Here’s a message for these idiots: FEDERAL GOVERNMENT, GET OUT OF MY LIFE. My husband just had to fill out that joke of a census form, threatening fines and jail if you DO NOT fill it out. It was directed more toward Hispanics and the illegals who are not wanted in this country. Dems are already planning for the population changes that will “favor” their party. The rest of us who lived here our entire lives and care about this country can go hang.

I am absolutely through with these people. If this sham bill passes, don’t be surprised when Obummer starts gutting the military in subtle and not so subtle ways. He’s already doing it with Medicare and Social Security. This is more about the Dems than it is about the country.

    TRAITORS ALL OF THEM!!!

No, you’re not confused. You’re not imagining things. People are p!ssed off and tying up phone and email at national headquarters. However, I like your turn of phrase better- House of Ill Repute. May I use it?

I thought I was a bitter clinger, racist and a generally bad person-confusing.

You know, so did I. I mean, I’ve got a college education but at least a lick of common sense. But, golly, because these blowhards like Obeyme went to an Ivy League school, he and his thugs think they’re smarter than the rest of us.

Unfortunately “smart” people do stupid things…. all the time. They’re not the authority on what’s right for the country, or the rest of us. It’s time to remind them of that.

I got to go to the Tea Party yesterday, but unfortunately my friend and I got a “late” start (at 6:30 AM). By the time we got from Central PA, dropped off both of our toddlers at friends’ houses, and made it to the Capitol, most of the crowds were gone. But there were still a lot of people there, and my friend had a really good, logical, not-crazy-sounding interview with the BBC. They said they were hoping to air her on Friday – watch for the tall lady named Linsy with a cute baby in a frog hat. :0) She did a really good job of explaining why Obamacare is Unamerican.
