Bart Stupak Still Waiting for the Great Pumpkin

Sorry to overdose on Charlie Brown references, but those were the first things that came to mind when I read about Bart Stupak’s “deal” with President Obama that exposed Stupak as such a giant sucker that the Tootsie Pops people are considering suing him for copyright infringement.

Via HotAirPundit — Stupak might end up waiting longer for Obama to sign that executive order on abortion (or more importantly for it to actually mean anything) than the average American will be waiting to see a doctor in a few years:

President Obama signed the Senate health care bill into law Tuesday. He did not sign the executive order on abortion negotiated with Michigan Democratic Congressman Bart Stupak in an 11th-hour arrangement that may well have saved the entire health care reform effort.

A White House official told Fox, Obama will not sign the Executive Order Tuesday and has set no specific date to do so. Stupak predicted Obama would sign the order later this week. The White House said only that Obama would sign the order “soon.”

In two celebratory speeches Tuesday – one at the bill’s signing, the other at the Interior Department with health care advocates – Obama said nothing about the abortion issue or the executive order.

And really, why would Obama stick to any such executive order and anger what’s left of his base for a gullible member of congress who is going to be voted out of office in less than eight months?

Update: Apparently Stupak was planning to have all the unborn children he thought he was saving flown to northern Michigan for babysitting purposes, which is why he coincidentally announced these little airport enhancements.

Details from NRCC.

Update II: The White House is saying Obama will sign the executive order in private Wednesday — and no doubt rescind it the same way. Either way, Planned Parenthood isn’t too concerned.

Rep Stupak wanted language added to the bill that would prevent individuals from paying for insurance with their own money that would cover abortion. That is the current problem with this bill, telling citizens what they can, or can not do, with their own money. Mandates.

Rep Stupak took a leap, realized the ridiculousness of the tenuous position he took and needed the fig leaf for cover. Whether the Executive Order is signed or not, Rep Stupak got what he needed, an out for being misguided and mischaracterizing the facts.

This is the part that is ‘thought provoking’, Zyzyg: that Stupak signed out for Obamacare (for lack of a better name) over emabarassment that the Hyde Law was not superceded by his oposition to Obamacare, in your view. I would argue that since the Hyde ‘Amendment’ is not a Constitutional Amendment but rather a law (as a guide) for Congress to interpret implementation of funding options under Roe v. Wade, that this portion of Obamacare is in effect a nullification of the Hyde ‘Amendment’(if not an attempt at doing so), and thus legal (but offensive to me at least).

The bottom line to me is that if he really believed his cave-in would give him political cover with a President who is not only for abortion, but infanticide via partial birth abortion, he is either a fool, nuts like Massa, or just plain evil (in that he already intended to sign on but went with this extra soap opera until Sunday for backroom deals). All he got-other than another misuse of the taxpayer’s money- was a ‘promise’ of an Executive Order prohibiting funding for abortion (some time in the future) which isn’t going to happen-Obama doesn’t need to do it now and he is not going to piss off his pro-abortion base.

I stand by my opinion that Rep Stupak advanced a non-issue. The Hyde Amendment was not threatened in the Healthcare Bill. You’d have to twist yourself into a pretzel to prove that was the case. Rep Stupak was tilting at windmills.

Any government mandate is a bad thing. Mandating what an individual can, or can not, do with their money is wrong. Mandating that your private resources can not pay for the coverage you want is wrong. Do you agree or disagree?
