Philly Flash Mobs
For “fun,” groups of amoral young thugs-in-training are roaming the streets of Philadelphia, intimidating passers-by and sometimes attacking them.
The police are trying to crack down on so-called flash mobs, marauding bands of teenage pinheads with little or non-existent parental supervision, by threatening to hold parents responsible. From the New York Times:
In the past year, at least four of the flash mobs have broken out in the city, including one on Saturday in which roving teenagers broke into fights, several onlookers were injured and at least three people were arrested.
“It was like a tsunami of kids,” said Seth Kaufman, 20, a pizza deliveryman at Olympia II Pizza & Restaurant on South Street. He lifted his shirt to show gashes along his back and arm. He also had bruises on his forehead he said were from kicks and punches he suffered while trying to keep a rowdy crowd from entering the shop, where a fight was already under way.
“By the time you could hear them yelling, they were flooding the streets and the stores and the sidewalks,” Mr. Kaufman said.
The ad hoc gangs have scared many pedestrians off the streets.
City residents are also starting to complain about the number of unsupervised children, and child advocates are asking if there are enough activities to keep young people busy after school.
Enough activities to keep young people busy after school. Give me a break.
According to media reports, the mobs began as some sort of performance art, where participants organize themselves via social networking sites. These “bored, sophisticated” fools meet up at places like malls and try to enter a store en masse for shock value.
This silliness reminds me of 1960s-era sexual liberation. Fueled by white, educated, upper- and middle-class women, the so-called sexual revolution trickled down to the lower classes, who couldn’t bounce back from sexual irresponsibility the way the higher classes could. In the same vein, when the “bored, sophisticated” flash mob idea trickled down to the lower classes, it turned violent and definitely unsophisticated.
While the police are doing their part, I recommend law-abiding residents of Philly do theirs by exercising their constitutional right to bear arms. For the record, Pennsylvania is a “shall issue” concealed carry state.

No sense in wasting. One to the chest. One to the head. 13 defensive shots left!
All there are are the quick and the dead.
If you want a good personal defense weapon, I suggest “The Judge” by Taurus. It fires .410 shotgun shells (and .45 shells) so near center misses still count, you can’t get a jam and there is no mistaking whether it is loaded. Oh, and for the perp, scary as hell from the barrel out.
BTW, for those of us in the southwest, it is just as adept at killing desert snakes as it is killing city snake-mobs. Personally, I prefer the desert snakes because they at least support themselves.

I bet if they got free health care from those who work they would stop being mean.
It’s certainly worth a shot… from, say, a .45…
What say you Mr. Holder? Hey, Obama, do you think these kids acted stupidly? Gonna have ‘em over for a brewski?
Anything you subsidize, you get more of.
Anyone else thinking A Clockwork Orange?
Thank you Mr. Remington, Mr. Colt and fellows: you made America a better place IE: an armed society is a polite society.
And for the 44 I carry I wish to thank Mr. Ruger and Gary Reeder of Reeder Customs Guns, Flagstaff, Arizona.
Be they Philly Flash Mobs, wilding in Central Park or just run of the mill punks it behooves you to be able to protect yourself.

when seconds count the police are only minutes away unless you are being mugged at a donut shop
These youts appear to be prime targets for trip wire, and Claymores.
The elevated positions along the street over the shops should be used in this example. You know, wait until a third has walked past your position, then spring the Ambush.
I was ~definitely~ thinking that. (But for a more obscure movie, I have been thinking “Joe” a lot lately.)
P.S. That’s Joe(1970). Google and Netflix are clueless but IMDB knows it, of course, if you can navigate to it. Also, Amazon has the DVD. I’d love to see it again now that I brought it up. It is Archie Bunker with artillery, as I recall it.
I am thinking there may be some local ordinance against ordnance like claymores in malls. And I bet somebody will have a problem with an AC-47 circling overhead for CAS too! Nothing says you care like Spooky.
What is this country coming to?
Well if that group doesn’t say “peaceful” I don’t know what does.
Another city off my list to visit – dang, my world keeps shrinking.
La Shawn, thank you for the story on this – this is the first I’ve heard of it. And, yes, I’m thinking it’s only going to get worse. Punks are punks and thugs are thugs. They seldom get over it. Prime material for ‘Bambi’s state police.

Forget double-tap: Take the skull shot and fight for Castle Doctrine laws in your home state to ensure that the victim isn’t punished by the perp (or their estate) who received the due consequences of their actions.
As read on the other thread about this mob action regarding the kids getting younger and younger-you are correct. These little darlings aren’t the 4’6″ 90lb variety, but the 6’1″ 200 lb kind and thats frightening since I am 6’4″ 200 and in my 40′s.
I used to work in a mental health facility with kids and received alot of bruises from these “little darlings” when they went off and started fighting for no apparent reason.
The kids knew who was in charge and that the adults couldn’t do anything to stop them. Your HWC techniques can only work for so long before you got hurt.

Cities all boast 50-60% drop out rate and they worry about parents and schools? These aren’t Wally Cleavers playing hooky for cryin’ out loud.

In unrelated news–gun and ammo sales continue to climb dramatically–as do increases in concealed carry licenses.

Just another of those little “coincidences” that seem to keep occurring. Cabala’s ammo backorder wait times keep going up exponentially.

I just have to hope that this incident along with other similar outbreaks is not a harbinger of things to come in Nov 2010.
The fact that this is Pennsylvania, home of Specter, home of some New Black Panthers, and historically home of the history making Colonial Congress and Constitutional convention that launched this great nation speaks in its own language.
I also hope that this is not part of an Obama Civilian Militia yet to be positively identified.

I genuinely hope we have 2010 elections.
Cam Edwards at nranews.com ponders if the libs would want to ban texting because of this the way they always want to ban guns after a some creep uses one in a crime.
I wouldn’t ride the bus system in San Francisco during the 1970′s because of undisciplined juveniles along my route but they were all over town. My mother was on a bus when a bunch of kids mobbed it from a nearby high school. They were rat packing anyone that tried to defend their space. One woman, who later turned out to be a government social worker, stood up to try to calm the miscreants. She was slugged in the face for her trouble. Later she said the kids were misunderstood and so probably deserved at least a good kick. Give me a large, carbon spewing Government Motors personal vehicle any day.
Your tax dollars at work; These marauding gangs are the result of a welfare state run amok.
