Don’t tell Henry Waxman: Ski resorts worried about Demcare costs

Last week, Henry Witch Hunt Waxman went after large companies that have issued public statements about the massive, anticipated hits they’ll take as a result of the Demcare mandates.
You can read the “invitation” letters Waxman fired off to the CEOs of Deere & Company, Caterpillar Inc., Verizon Communications Inc., and AT&T at the House Energy and Committee website here.
Power Line has a good overview of Waxman’s vindictive campaign here.
Now comes news that ski resorts here in my state of Colorado are girding their loins for the Demcare hit (hat tip – Complete Colorado):
The Steamboat Pilot on Wednesday quoted worried officials from the Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp. to the effect that the health-care measure approved three days earlier could cost them $2 million a year starting in 2014. The story said the ski industry has a huge number of uninsured seasonal employees who work enough to qualify for full-time benefits.
There is some concern in the industry, said Jennifer Rudolph of Colorado Ski Country USA, which has 22 members statewide.
“But (the legislation) was no surprise, and we’ve been in constant conversation with our members,” Rudolph said. “It will stay on our radar while we figure out what it all means.”
Dave Byrd, director of education and risk at the National Ski Areas Association, was more emphatic.
“This is a serious, serious issue,” Byrd said. “We’re all scrambling to make heads and tails of it.”
The legislation, which calls for a $2,000 per employee fine for failure to insure full-time workers (30 hours or more a week), offers half-hearted exemption for seasonal workers, but it’s not enough, Byrd said. There are too many unresolved issues, he said. Ski resorts are a lifeline, providing employment in job-poor rural areas and at a time when work is scarce, Byrd said.
Shhhh. Careful not to speak too loudly. Your “invitation” from Waxman the Taxman may soon be in the mail…

“Waxing” your skis has a whole new connotation now.
I see a 29 hour work week in their future
If it flies, crawls, walks, slithers, or breaths you are gonna get taxed by this bho, team, and the d’s in dc! They have thousands of people spending 24/7 trying to see to it!
L
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA (Just channeling my inner Sonny Bono)
I warned the skibum/snowboarding kids and extreme sports people last summer…. you can support all that feelgood ‘free heathcare’ you want, but you had better get a clue, the government is coming after YOU. Extreme sports dont fit into that green/healthy lifestyle. (live by the sword, die by the sword)
And I hated to break it to them, but my deductibles and taxes go to cover MY injuries, not theirs. Someone else has to cover everyone elses coverage
(I guess Shaun White and Lyndsey Vonn better step it and cover all of them)
Those of you who think the X-Files were fantasy take a good look at Visitor
Waxman.
I just don’t understand what these big corporations are kvetching about. If they run out of money, they can just fire up their printing presses and make more, just like the government. Oh wait, . . . nevermind.
Well then, they can just raise their prices, and pass it on to the consumer. It’s not like they have to be competitive in the marketplace or anything. Oh wait, . . . nevermind.
Well then, they can just spend more than they take in. It’s not like they have a responsibility to their shareholders to make a profit. Oh wait, . . . nevermind.
Corporate greed. All they care about are profits. What about social justice? What about providing for those less capable? If these ski resorts complain about the need to insure seasonal workers, then I have a simple solution. Make them part of the payroll year round! There should be a law that forbids any ski employer from firing their workers. And likewise, anyone employed by the ski resort should not be allowed to quit or resign. This is a win-win solution for both parties. I trust Obama and Legislators will soon pass more socially just regulations.
Thugs are now running our nation. They have shown a willingness to subvert the wishes of large portions of the population by ramming through despised legislation simply because it enhances the power of the Democrat party while intimidating and threatening anyone who disagrees with their plans. God Bless America – it will be a long 3 more years of this.
in_awe,
Why do you think that you are right and our Washington leaders are wrong? How can you possibly know who is right here?
There will be a massive amount of unproductive activity as companies try to comply without going broke. Movie theaters will lay people off to stay under 50 employess. Smaller chain restaurants will stay under 20 units to avoid having to redo all their signs. These are just a few immediate problems.
Pedro, you fail to consider the social aspects of this. It is more enlightened for the weak to live off the strong. It is more compassionate to have the strong working for the benefit of the weak.
I FULLY expect those corporations to show up and eat Waxman’s lunch.
That kind of fun is just for the rich and they won’t mind paying more for it,right? The ski lodges can operate with less employees and the ones that get layed off can draw unemployment for a year or so and that is free, right?
The 90 pound weakling with a bully complex, much like that king in Shrek.
Or there is another solution. They drop them to 15 hours a week and hire double the employees. This way they avoid the penalties and Obama can claim that unemployment is dropping.
Question. How about “kids” under 27 who are covered by their parents policies?
Uh Vinny, isn’t it a little hard on the equipment, skiing over rocks and trees in the summertime?
Another solution. Do a share employee program. Split into 2 companies and have them work 20 hours with each company.
The problem is that a substantial percentage of the workers are from S.America or other countries. Our kids are in school, but its summer in other places. They pay the kids in minimal cash but the benefit is in ‘free ski passes’. Its a work season from Oct to April which doesnt fit too well in the real world
Vinny: Understand something about government-mandated “compassion”: it’s not compassion when it’s coercion. If a business wants to “help the weak,” that’s their business. But forcing someone to pony up benefits for others is not the job of government.
Social justice is a misnomer — unless you believe in Marx and Lenin.
Less crowded though.
Waxman is such a moron. The he and DC thugs didn’t anticipate the unintended consequences of the bait and switch health care plan. He should have know about the laws regarding the SEC regulations on company disclosure. Not only to they fail to read the bills prior to passage, they fail to remember the regulations which are now law. The silver lining in all the gov take overs may be that they are too incompetent to actually take over anything and hold on to it.
More Soviet show theatrics from the Dems:
http://www.redstate.com/erick/2010/03/29/the-new-mccarthyism-is-waxmania-silencing-the-capitalists/
I’ve got it. They can use the ski resorts as re-education camps in the off-season, and they can hire the folks as Obama Community Action Commissars.
Ragman, good point about skiing in Summer-time. That would likely justify providing medical insurance for all involved.
Don’t know why I haven’t seen this perfect characterization before. It’s too obvious to be original.
ACHEfty:
But forcing someone to pony up benefits for others is not the job of government.
-Could have fooled me.
And I’m such a dupe that I thought the purpose of the constitution was to Limit the Power of the Federal Government. It’s plain to see that is what the words say. Unfortunately, obviously somebody much more enlightened can see that it doesn’t mean that at all. In fact, it clearly (apparently) means the government has all the rights and only those it chooses to give to the citizens are those the citizens should enjoy.
Now please excuse me to go back to remedial reading class.
*Like the saying goes, “you ain’t seen nothing yet”; And surely people will begin to understand that rather than unintended consequences, we are seeing the purposeful, willful destruction of our beloved country by the Democrat(Death to America)Party; It’s way past time for everyone who cares about the country to climb aboard the Tea Party train and steamroll these people out of office, including Waxman.
Hmm… re-education camps. Didn’t Obama unveil some new education fund? Coincidence?
It is well documented that skiing accidents are significantly more painful over rocks, despite that fact that downhill speeds are significantly slower.
Will the re-education camps have a “No Conservative Left Behind” standard tied to Federal support?
Wesley Mooch sends letters to business owners, to highlight our government’s priorities. Making money is so….last year.
Of course this could end up being a non-issue in the long run…After all how many people will really be able to afford to go skiing when we start paying all the additional taxes that both the feds and the state govt’s are passing hand over fist.
Nostrildamus strikes again. I hope there are dozens of large companies who show up with their Perot-style charts to show exactly what it’s going to cost them. I’d insist the cameras be rolling so the Dems can’t hide any data that doesn’t support their cause.
If the companies back down, then maybe their blowing hot air too.
Speaking of internment camps. What are the “Ready Reserve Corps” in Sec 5210 of the bill?
Maybe Liberado should consider voting for conservatives for a change.
Then the businesses will get lots of negative press because the unions will claim these workers need to be represented due to their low number of work hours.
They will vote for union representation, get more hours, and the businesses will promptly close due to bankruptcy.
Ski Resorts? hey wait a minute, did not President Obama condem companies for holding conventions and business meetings in Las Vegas. Those upscale sik resorts in Colorado should be put on the list, this list should include everywhere but Chicago…That is so we can get the rest of the country to go clean up the mess Community Organizer Obama left behind.
Something for Mr. Waxman to contemplate:
Scene at a Washington, DC proctologist’s office last week:
“America, Commissar Waxman will see you now.”
Not just ski resorts, but think of the poor lifeguard business, beachfront food and drink guys, hot dog vendors with carts, boat rental companies on the lakes in northern states, AND OH MY GOD, SEASONAL ILLEGAL ALIENS CUTTING GRASS AND PICKING APPLES. tHIS LAW HAS TO GO, IT’S HARMING OUR ILLEGALS.
I have just been watching Cavuto about this. These thugs are overplaying their hand and it will backfire, big time. They can’t continue this intimidation without a huge backlash. Wait for it. Coming soon.
Judge Napolitano was livid today about another item found in the bill regarding calling out the military for “health-related emergencies”. This is getting really scary.
The problem is that more than one person wrote the bill, they stuck it all together without anyone really knowing the entire bill, most of Congress not having read ANY of it, and rammed it through. NOW the $hit is hitting the fan.
Stocking up on popcorn and other essentials.
I am assuming they are talking about the National Guard. They are supposed to be under the jurisdiction of the States, not the federal government. It is clearly stated in the constitution. This is serious.
Yeesh! The last time I saw a mug like that, it was rootng for truffles! Even Helen Thomas would scream seeing that in a mirror!
Drudge is linking to a CBS report that the census is experiencing “significant performance issues” but the link is experiencing too much traffic to get through.
I guess all us “Americans” are throwing a monkey in their race-based income redistribution machine.
No they are not, but they should. The whole idea is a total waste, as they already have the assets. Becasue they are not needed in peacetime, probably 80% of the Army’s medical units are in the USAR and ARNG.
They have everything they need pretty much for this kind of mission, but the idiots who draft the bills in secret do not know that, becasue of their Progressive hatred for the military. They want to pay for a second rate new toy.
Judge Napolitano said he is really worried about this one…why do “civilian” doctors need to train with the military. Once called up they couldn’t retire for one thing. Scary stuff…the more is read in this bill the more stuff drops out that is very questionable…
RE: Ready Reserve etc.
Please refer to
http://hotair.com/archives/2010/03/27/ready-reserve-corps-over-60-years-old/
When Waxman was a child his pediatrician kept telling him, “You gotta keep your fingers outta there”.
He didn’t listen.
Hmmmm….
Seperated at birth?
I’m not sure that it does refer to either the National Guard, State Guard or any other existing entity.
SEC. 5210. ESTABLISHING A READY RESERVE CORPS. Section 203 of the Public Health Service Act (42 U.S.C. 204) is amended to read as follows: SEC. 203. COMMISSIONED CORPS AND READY RESERVE CORPS. (3) APPOINTMENT.Commissioned officers of the Ready Reserve Corps shall be appointed by the President and commissioned officers of the Regular Corps shall be appointed by the President with the advice and consent of the Senate. (b) ASSIMILATING RESERVE CORP OFFICERS INTO THE REGULAR CORPS. Effective on the date of enactment of the Affordable Health Choices Act, all individuals classified as officers in the Reserve Corps under this section (as such section existed on the day before the date of enactment of such Act) and serving on active duty shall be deemed to be commissioned officers of the Regular Corps.
Comment I saw on the issue: [Note here that those personally appointed by BO -- without advice and consent of the Senate -- automatically become a part of the Regular Corps.]
So, I am still unclear. It might be completely innocuous. I’ll have to check my recording of Judge N tonight. Sorry about the long post.
I heard this the other day…they were experiencing serious computer problems. Their IT people said the system is not working as they intended. Ha!!!! Those darned “unintended consequences” again. Does the government have ANY competent people working for it??? ANYONE?? Bueller?? What a bunch of bozos.
Thanks, Lockstein13. I think we posted at the same time. That does clear things up.
This little pig-nosed bolshevik should be in jail with the rest of the Democrat collaborators. Indict all of them and get to the bottom of this communist coup.
Anybody see Valerie Jarrett this weekend talking about those greedy insurance companies…So glad she’s looking out for the little people… I’m thinking pot.kettle.
On March 29th, 2010 at 2:58 pm, Flyoverman said:

I agree. The corporations will show up with facts and figures. These usually trump wishful thinking.
The Democrat Inquisition is in full swing now. But nothing last forever, Komrade Waxman should enjoy his moment now, because sooner or later the pendulum will swing back to the sane side and Prince Henry the Thug will receive his just due.
But how could Waxman be wrong? They just passed a bill that they said would provide everyone benefits and reduce the deficit.
Last time I looked, job losses reduce revenue and increase government spending. Isn’t that creating a deficit in itself. These companies must be wrong. They need to prove it. The American people deserve to know the truth!
From the letter to AT&T:
“The new law is designed to expand coverage and bring down costs…”
No it isn’t. It’s designed primarily to increase the taxes paid by Americans, expand the role of government into healthcare even more, and reduce the quality of healthcare most Americans receive to a level closer to rural China.
And its designed to try and salvage Obamas political career.
And its designed to begin the path to a one payer universal health care system run by the government.
And its desigend to redistribute wealth in this country by giving to the poor something we can’t afford that will just take from the rich in order to provide it to the poor.
And its…
Mr. Waxman’s actions are not consistent with the American way of life and liberty. In fact, we seem to be loosing control of our government.
One attack from the Dems after another. All people and businesses on the wrong side of these crooks are under attack.
We can do nothing until the next election? What will be left by thet time? Can it be repaired? It’s not my nature to stand by and watch as my family is attacked.
In related news, looks like the Obamacare payoffs are starting.
Crock of Brock will deem them too large to fail and the giverment will bail them out as in take them over.
They already have the a “Reserve corps” of doctors under the Surgeon General who are paid to work a couple of days a month and be on call for emergencies, under the Public Health Service. While I could imply Obama is too well educated (that Ivy League education)in the resources and programs of the government to know this, but I suspect he does know and it is not what he was looking for. Like he clearly stated when he was campaigning, he wants his own personal army of
thugscitizens to support his (not Congress, or the countries) programs. And his voters never thought Congress would actually let him do it. What a bunch of fools our liberal run public school system has created. Perhaps people will start to understand when his army puts on the red armbands with the “O” logo, of course the MSM will be falling all over themselves to gush about the fashionable uniforms Obama has for his
GANGScivilian ARMY.I can’t wait to see how many black panthers are appointed when the Surgeon General starts handing out
weaponsdefensive tools, after members suffer from broken and bruised fists afterattackingbeing attacked bypeaceful protestorsrabid conservative traitors. I would love to see an actual author and creation date on the list of Presidential Appointees to the “Ready Reserve”, but you can be sure that will never happen!Amazing how easy it is to predict events these days, as the MSM sing “Praise be unto the one”.
Perhaps Waxman should go after companies who don’t follow SEC regulations rather than those that do. Of course if they change them there will no longer be those pesky announcements of write downs for changes to the laws…. Perhaps he will go after the SEC for requireing these companies to make the announcements that have a major effect on stock value…..
What a tool, a tool of Obama.
So Waxman now has a list of additional corporations to be Toyota’d.
And I love how pointing out the obvious, makes them angry.
Can’t have the truth sneak in anywhere. Ruins the narrative and story board.
Stand by for one of two options:
(a) A Gilbert and Sullivan level production while the bad, evil corporations are scolded and schooled … Babs Boxer is big on that…while the underlying issues and facts are ignored or
(b) the committee staff quietly informs Mr. Blowhard that their position has merit, ergo, there will be a flurry of media drops and a big distractor in the hopes that no one will pay attention to what is going on in the hearing.
Actually, Waxman looks more like the south end of the one on the left.
How sweet it would be to boot Waxman out of office this November.
I volunteer for Ari David, the Republican challenging him. Please send Ari some money!
http://www.aridavidforcongress.com
I did my part.
The only truthful answer on my census form was the number of people living in my house.
I used a sharpie to *ahem* “modify” the bar code too.
Waxman is a little tyrant, he was before all this health care stuff too. What the shrinks call ‘compensatory behavior’..often exhibited by people with self esteem problems(however in Waxman’s case these may be legitimate worries?).As for monkeying with the census, I might not answer some questions but those I do answer will be truthful.
I did not see any reason to lie on my answers to the questions on the census. They were no different than any other census I have filled out. Name, age, race, do I own or rent? Big deal. AND, if you are white and don’t put it down, you help to change us to minority status. Also, scratching out the bar code means you will probably have a census volunteer knocking on your door. It it worth it? I don’t think so. I can’t speak for the long form, but the short form is harmless.
I absolutely don’t lie on the census.
If a person from the Phillipines is Philipino, and a person from Korea is Korean, and a person from China is Chinese, etc. – and all of these were listed – then, as a person from America, I am American.
Black and White are colors, not nationalities, ethnicities, or “peoples.”
Go to 10 different EU nations and ask random people what nationality are they. If *any* of them say “white,” you’ve just found a Yank. British, French, Swede, Dane, Belgian, Italian, Greek, Spanish, German, Fin, Czech, Polish, etc., etc., etc.
But “white?” Never.
