They’re at it again. Early Monday morning in Russia, two female killers strapped themselves with bombs and attacked rail stations in Moscow. Scores are reported dead; more than 70 injured.
“Terrorism is suspected,” duh:
Two female homicide bombers blew themselves up on Moscow’s subway system as it was jam-packed with rush-hour passengers Monday, killing at least 35 people and wounding more than 30, the city’s mayor and other officials said. Emergency Ministry spokeswoman Svetlana Chumikova said 23 people were killed at the Lubyanka station in central Moscow. The station is underneath the building that houses the main offices of the Federal Security Service, or FSB, the KGB’s main successor agency.
…Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov said both explosions were believed to have been set off by female suicide bombers as the trains entered the stations. In the first case, officials said the explosion was on the train; there was no immediate information on the location of the second blast.
…Russia’s top investigative body also said terrorism was suspected.

The attacks marked the second major upsurge in terrorism on the transportation system over the last year. In November, a bomb derailed a luxury train traveling from Moscow to St. Petersburg, killing 26 people. The authorities linked the attack to Muslim insurgents in the Ingushetia region, which is near Chechnya…In September 2004, a suicide bomber killed at least 9 other people and wounded more than 50 outside the Rizhskaya subway stop. In February of that same year, a woman carrying a bomb destroyed another subway car, killing at least 41 people as the train moved between the Paveletskaya and the Avtozavodskaya stations at one of the busiest times of the day.

Josh Lefkowitz and Lorenzo Vidino had an important article in The National Interest on train terror plots last spring. Here’s a relevant excerpt:
Always eager to exploit vulnerabilities, terrorists have demonstrated a sustained interest in targeting rail systems. While a number of plots have been thwarted by solid intelligence gathering and aggressive police work, there is every indication that subways and trains will continue to be attractive targets for terrorists, who have been able to refine their tactics by studying previous plots. There is evidence, for example, that the Madrid bombers may have learned from the past successful efforts of Chechen terrorists.
Chechens have used nearly every conceivable tactic to inflict maximum damage: from suicide bombers blowing themselves up on commuter trains during the morning rush hour to planting bombs on railway tracks in the proximity of crowded stations. While last month’s bombing of the Moscow subway, which claimed forty lives, attracted widespread press coverage, several other attacks in the rural southern areas of Russia by Chechen terrorists have received little attention despite the carnage they have caused.
Significantly, a now-dismantled Al-Qaeda cell that was based in Madrid and actively helped in the planning of 9/11 had several key links to Chechen extremists. In fact, Imad Eddine Barakat Yarkas, the now incarcerated leader of the cell, is accused by Spanish judge Baltasar Garzon of having recruited several militants to train and fight in Chechnya alongside Al Qaeda. Moreover, Yarkas coordinated fundraising efforts within the Madrid Muslim community for Chechen “freedom fighters.”
Abu Qatada, a Palestinian cleric who Spanish authorities have described as “Al-Qaeda’s spiritual leader in Europe,” coordinated the Chechen fundraising from London. Yarkas frequently traveled to London to give funds collected in Spain to Abu Qatada, and, on at least one occasion, was accompanied by Said Chedadi, another member of the Madrid cell involved in fundraising for the “Chechen brothers.” Chedadi is known to have been close to Mohammed Chaoui, one of the three Moroccan men arrested on March 13 by Spanish authorities for their involvement in the deadly Madrid bombings. Another Moroccan alleged to be involved in the bombings, Jamal Zougam, was found with several tapes about jihad in Chechnya, when Spanish authorities searched his Madrid apartment in July of 2001.
While the Chechens serve as the most likely model, there is no shortage of examples of planned and successful attacks on the world’s rail systems. Prior to 9/11, terrorists bombed the Paris metro and released poison gas in the Tokyo subway system. In addition, since 9/11, counterterrorism agents have broken up plots to launch a cyanide attack on the London Tube and bomb railway stations in Dresden and Madrid.
In the United States, the rail network has also been repeatedly targeted. On July 31, 1997, the NYPD launched a pre-dawn raid on an apartment in Brooklyn, New York, after receiving information that two men living in the apartment planned to bomb the New York City subway system. During the raid, police discovered nail-studded pipe bombs, one of which, in the words of a senior law enforcement official, was “all set and ready to go.” NYPD Commissioner Howard Safir remarked, “these individuals intended to take these bombs onto subway trains, set them off, and the probability is that they and many others would have been killed.”
The vulnerability of the New York City subway system again came into focus in September 2003, when Time magazine reported that Saudi Arabia had detained a terrorist with extensive knowledge of a plot to launch a poison gas attack on the subways. In April 2003, news broke that another captured terrorist, Al-Qaeda operations head Khalid Sheik Mohammed, had informed interrogators of an Al-Qaeda plan to target Washington D.C.’s metro…
Sobering information to keep in mind.

The blasts were caused by two women wearing belts packed with explosives, Moscow’s chief prosecutor Yuri Syomin told reporters.
Surveillance camera footage posted on the Internet showed motionless bodies lying in Lubyanka station lobby and emergency workers treating victims.

Quite some time ago, when I was a mere undergrad (mid 80′s), an instructor in an International Relations/Foreign Policy course said that of the 2 looming largest dangers or threats to the then Soviet Union — the Western Capitalist system vs. the tearing of the internal cohesion due to the growth of the minority Islamic population in outlying Republics (the birth rate in the primarily Islamic Republics was far greater than that of the traditional Russian areas) — that the demise of the nation was imminent. He was just not sure which cause the USSR would fall to. In retrospect, the ideological/systemic things did fail the USSR. However, now in the newly formed and independent Republics, the ‘demographic chickens are coming home to roost’ (so to speak).
You can define a country, put a boundary around it, and throw lots of different types of people in it, but… you can’t make them all get along.
Will O-Barry have a strongly worded response to this? Does he understand what Islam is? I say, “who cares.” Throw him out of office in 2012 no matter what he thinks. Islam is at war with the world, will we fight back or make excuses.

Absolutely not. I try to avoid the Washington metro as much as I can. The last time I rode it, about two weeks ago, there was a Middle Eastern “tourist” taking pictures of signs in the crowded Metro Center station.
Also, when I took the metro every day last summer, a couple of times Muslim women with tons of clothes on and large backpacks got on the subway on the red line, most likely doing trial runs. They are definitely preparing an attack, and there is no security at all on metro. Anyone can get on the subway.
They also know that the Obama government is completely clueless and inept, so I think it is only a matter of time.
I find it interesting that Putin said the perpetrators would be tracked down and punished . . . he skipped right over tried and brought to justice. Do you think they will be Mirandized?

Ordinarily I don’t buy into the, “They were only reacting to our presence in ____________” rationalization for terrorism, but with the Russians it carries some weight. “They make a desert and call it ‘peace’” was the Roman way of dealing with hostile locals, just as applicable today to the Russians’ notion of “counter-terrorism.”

Glad you got something out of it. A not-so-obvious reason I included it was to get people to think about what happens when shifting demographics put the previously minority population suddenly into the majority (at least in certain regions). Many Americans aren’t aware of it, but we are facing an analogous scenario. Few are fully aware of the implications of what that might ultimately entail.

When they do have a hostage situation the Russian security services kill everyone in sight to make sure they got the right one, innocents be damned. I ride BART, the Bay Area Rapid Transit trains every day through an eight mile tube under San Francisco Bay. We are a huge target. The BART board of directors, in their infinite wisdom, just wired the tube so that people can use their cell phones while under the bay. Many of us protested, reminding them that call phones can be used as detonators. We were ignored.
Took a quick look at one (really)left wing site thread on the bombings. 50 comments and had to go through half before the word islam was even brought up. And then it was someone claiming it would be blamed on islamic terrorists even if untrue. Next person confirmed it was isalmic terrorists. First person seemed really disappointed it was. But on all the sites I have been to I see no shortage of comments saying it will happen here as well soon and be done by “far right extremists” or “Teabag****”.
The number of comments putting forth the idea that this was done by “Christians” in some way shape or form were far and away more numerous than any that mention of islamic terrorists.
And of course there was one obligatory comment attributing the bombings to a “CIA black ops”. Sheeesh.
Last but certainly not least there were also the morons who say things like “innocents die while pedophile priests walk free” and “meanwhile Christian drones continue killing”.
Are these liberals even living on the same planet as the rest of us? What is it with these morons that their first reaction is to try and deflect any mention of islamic terrorism by changing the subject or bringing in issues for comparison that have no relevance at all?

However, it is always hard to tell if what The Messiah is saying has anything to do with what He is thinking–or if it has any relation to his past and present actions. I always try to watch the troops faces and see what they really think about the President and his actions. Are they buying it? Do they think it is C**P? Are they just being used as backup for a photo-op? Do they trust and really respect the President? Are they keeping a “stiff upper lip” and giving proper respect to their Commander in Chief? They probably like his Predator Drone strikes–something President Obama is doing properly.

Due to the Teleprompters it was hard to see more than half a dozen military faces during most of the speech. Most of those near The One seemed like older experienced people. The Black man over His right shoulder, the older White guy at His left, a lady soldier near him. Most were blinking a lot, looked very tired, and were emotionless most of the time. Only five or so real applause events occurred–during thanking them and in calling for them to successfully complete their missions defending and protecting us all.

The military people are not dummies. I could almost hear them thinking about President Obama’s past statements and actions that faulted them. And tried to defund them. And I could hear them thinking about civilian trials for KSM and other terrorists. And about the many left wing advisers and supporters who denigrate our Armed Forces. I remember going through Moscow in 1997 or 1998 around the time another very busy subway station was bombed. That taught me to be very observant in subway stations and trains. I am always very alert when I get on the DC subway. And everyone else should be too.
Eventually, it will happen here. If they can pull it off in Spain, Britain and Russia they can do it here.
These lunatics will obviously continue to target soft targets that are busy. And subways and train stations are about as soft and busy as it gets.
I was at Union Station last week for the rally and it is as unprotected as Kazanskii Train Station or Belarussia Train Station in Moscow were the last time I was there.
Ironically, in the early 90s you had to show a ticket to get into the Kazanskii Train Station. By the late 90s you didn’t. It would be impossible for the government to implement effective security at Union Station. Union Station is a mall with many popular restaurants and a food court. You would destroy the area economically if you started demanding tickets at Union Station entrances since I expect less than 15% of the people who visit go there to ride trains!
Of course, a bomb going off in Union Station will certainly destroy the local economy after it kills a few score people. You can’t guard and protect everything and maintain a free and open society.
We are not ready for this kind of threat and we probably can’t be ready for it and remain a free people! And the Jihadis know it…

When in 1980 the Lebanese terrorists kidnapped and murdered a Russian diplomat, the Russians (then the Soviets, which is an irrelevant distinction in these matters, as in many others) quickly found out what organization was responsible for the act, kidnapped a relative of the chief of the gang, and returned him to his family within a week piece by piece.
Grandson Marine Sgt. on way to Bagram – watching Obama (briefly) bragging about the plane he was given to use made me sick. The bombings in Moscow is an interesting turn of events that may be a game changer if people wake up.

There is a line from a book entitled, “The Day Kennedy was Shot” by Jim Bishop. It was to describe what Mrs. Kennedy was enduring at Parkland Hospital as she sat alone in a hallway covered in her husband’s blood. The section began with these words,

Those words have haunted me for years. Consider the unborn, the old, and the poor. Tell me those words are not true.

Metro has been particularly deadly to commuters in the last year or two. It is a nice system but already showing its age after less than 35 years. They can’t handle snow, the escalators break down all the time, the elevators are a mess, and they are paying many, many employees 100K a year in salary plus over-time because supervisors give preferential treatment to union buddies and relatives rather than hire more employees to reduce overtime. It is a very poorly managed and run system.
However, a dedicated Islamo-fascist seems destined to take Metro itself out of first place when it comes to passenger fatalities.
I have seen some pretty odd things on Metro and I really don’t have explanations for several of the most strange things. But I have seen groups of young, military aged men, obviously casing cars and communicating with each other in signs and gestures. And I almost never see transit police or Metro employees on the cars or even the platforms.
I suppose Metro can do things to make Metro more secure but you just can’t stop and search everyone. I think there are about around 750,000 trips on Metro every weekday. They just can’t stop and search that many people every day. It would shut down the city.
