Before he was for it:
The Obama administration is proposing to open vast expanses of water along the Atlantic coastline, the eastern Gulf of Mexico and the north coast of Alaska to oil and natural gas drilling, much of it for the first time, officials said Tuesday.
The proposal — a compromise that will please oil companies and domestic drilling advocates but anger some residents of affected states and many environmental organizations — would end a longstanding moratorium on oil exploration along the East Coast from the northern tip of Delaware to the central coast of Florida, covering 167 million acres of ocean.
If this were a sincere change of heart and an honest, stand-alone effort to wean America off foreign oil, it would be worth heralding.
But as always with this administration, there’s a catch, via the American Energy Alliance:
“One major flashpoint in the negotiations has been whether to share drilling revenue with states and to allow states to opt in or out of drilling along their coastlines. It was unclear late Tuesday whether Obama endorses revenue-sharing for states. “It appears the Northern Atlantic and entire Pacific Coast will now be under a de facto ban” for drilling, said Patrick Creighton, a spokesman for the Institute for Energy Research. Even if drilling is ultimately allowed in part of the Atlantic, Creighton said, revenue sharing is an essential incentive for states. The administration’s plans could meet resistance from at least 10 Senate Democrats representing coastal and Great Lakes states who last week raised concerns about “unfettered access to oil and gas drilling” that could jeopardize fishing, tourism and military exercises. The Interior Department retooled the current schedule of offshore leases governing 2007 through 2012 after a federal appeals court last April ruled that the second Bush administration had not done a sufficient environmental review of expanded drilling off the Alaskan coast.
GOP Rep. Mike Pence adds:
“As usual the devil is in the details. Only in Washington, D.C., can you ban more areas to oil and gas exploration than you open up, delay the date of your new leases and claim you’re going to increase production.
“The President’s announcement today is a smokescreen. It will almost certainly delay any new offshore exploration until at least 2012 and include only a fraction of the offshore resources that the previous Administration included in its plan.
“Unfortunately, this is yet another feeble attempt to gain votes for the President’s national energy tax bill that is languishing in the Senate. At the end of the day this Administration’s energy plan is simple: increase the cost of energy on every family in America and trade American jobs oversees at a time when millions of Americans are looking for work.”

Nothing that Obama does is honest. He is using this to fool the media into making this the headline of the day and take the focus away from the important stuff. There is NO WAY this administration will allow us to drill here or drill now. He lies, lies, lies. He really thinks he can continue to lie to the American people and we will continue to “fall in line”. He is in for a very rude awakening, and very soon.
… And don’t forget that the enviro-wackos, who won’t be satisfied until what’s left of humanity is calling the trees “home” again, will tie this up in litigation forever.
It’s a publicity stunt. Hope-a-Dope knows that there will likely never be any drilling in these areas, but he also knows that his media pals will make it look like he’s the next Captain of the Oil Industry.
At this point one would have to be an imbecile to believe anything that this poseur says.

It’s truly insulting how dumb and naive Obama seems to think the American people are – this is a ruse and we all know it! He’s using this as a prelude to forcing Cap and Tax on us; he’s trying to lull us into a laxity that will allow easier passage of C&T than he had with the health care bill. Don’t fall for it, folks!
Read the fine print. This is for “exploration” drilling….which is BS. We already know where the oil is, and we have the means to extract it.
This is nothing more than an add-on to his nuclear plant lies.
It’s interesting to note, the USA according to the governments own EIA, has the largest fossil fuel reserves of any country.
Secondly, coal to liquids technology, like what was used in WWI by Germany, can produce liquid fuel at a price of under $30 a barrel oil equivalent. We need to stop building monuments to horses and fish out of our coal, oil and natural gas reserves.
And third, what were the lies about energy independence again, and oh BTW why do we give 100s of billions of dollars to Arab countries?
The Democrat’s energy independence lies have to stop.
BTW, this is also a distraction from that monster he unleashed on us called “heath Care.” Obama and the Dems are desperate to get voters’ attention off Obamacare.

It’s also likely that this an attempt by Obama to appear as a jobs creator, ahead of Friday’s release of the March numbers.
While I agree with the experts that Friday’s numbers will show better than expected jobs creation for March, I fail to see where this suffices as proof that this administration has done anything improve or sustain jobs growth in the private sector.
1. He’s getting ready to pounce on another country and jack them up. Hmmm, who’s left?
2. Another unpopular bill is ready to be sprung on the country.
3. His polls are dropping like an anchor as are his compatriot’s numbers.

Demand for gas is down, so much so that a refinery in NJ closed. Gee, and I thought we didn’t have enough refineries on a good day. The price of gas just keeps going up, up and up. Unbelievable!!!! We are being taken for a ride six ways to sunday. Bho just finds new ways to p!ss us off. He is so far beyond being a pathological liar, that he has entered a new realm. I remember having a lively discusion about this a few years ago with one of our liberal friends here. He was totally against any more drilling and all in favor of Obama’s plans for green energy. I wonder what kind of logic gymnastics he would use now to justify Obama’s plans today.

I think it’s funny how he says it as though offshore drilling is his unique idea.
He’s not interested in anything but the tax revenue it would generate.
Of course, the only reason he’s announcing this like he is with great fanfare is because he wants to use this as a bargaining chip.
It’s just like Blago with the senate seat. This white house only does things that it deems has value. This is the ‘look I gave you offshore drilling, now give me the carbon tax’.
Anytime you have a leader ‘leading’ through bargaining, you are setting up a bad ending. Offshore drilling should be done because it is the RIGHT thing to do, not some political payoff.
Obama is really making me sad because the president shouldn’t be so deliberately misleading. As someone who understands health care as though my life depends on it, the way he discussed that issue makes me long for a monarchy . . . any monarchy (as long as it isn’t Obama).
Having said that, the F18 that runs on biofuels was pretty cool. I’m all for alternative energy as long as I don’t have to sacrifice performance. If it’s harder on the parts than regular jet fuel, it’s worthless.
But if they can fly jets on biofuel, that would go a long way to helping. . . but we need to create gas out of sugar, not corn. . . but that gets back to political payoffs again. The right thing to do never gets done in America because we are concerned about political gamesmanship.

I agree with your sentiments almost entirely, but in fairness, I have to say that it’s not unusual for the President to fly to potentially dangerous areas like the ‘stans “undercover” so to speak. That holds true sometimes with even flag officers of a certain level.

Any oil from any new well would not see the inside of a gas tank in the short term. Drilling for oil in an environmentally sound manner off of our coasts is critical to the Nation’s benefit. Oil is part of meeting our energy needs. As is coal, natural gas, nuclear power, hydro, wind, and solar.
What needs to be addressed is why aren’t the current leases being exploited? And, should oil be produced from the areas Pres Obama spoke of today, should that oil be exclusively for sale in the US?

In regards to question 2 I would say yes, because that restriction has been placed on Alaskan oil since the 1990′s. However, there may be mitigating factors.
America grew in part due to abdundant, inexpensive energy. I think that is a worthy objective to continue.

Anybody who thinks that Obeyme is putting America on the road to “energy independence” is only fooling themselves. What we need is modernizing our electricy delivery system, not focusing predominantly on “green technology.” We just had a power outage in Colorado Springs about an hour ago and it doesn’t take much for such an event to occur… a car crashing into a power line or somebody digging and disconnecting an underground powerline.
We have no strategy for energy. We didn’t during the Bush administration and we’re living in a time where hackers can break into computers that control our power grid and shut it down. The power/oil/energy companies are the enemy of Obeyme and he wants to regulate them as much as the health care, banking, and mortgage industries.
We’re living in scary times.

As for the oil, you better believe this is a rope-a-dope. Obambi would never voluntarily allow un-conditional access for the oil industry to anything. Cap and tax will certainly be a part of this, and the only thing he is apparently allowing is exploration, not production.

Only a brain-dead liberal would look at any politician as a savior. Clear thinking conservatives view our favored politicians as fellow human beings that we agree with on many/most issues and realize they are anything but perfect and need constant prodding with the threat of being fired to keep them in line. And whatever happened to your cherished separation of church and state (or rather, cult and state as is the current situation)?

As far as drilling goes, I’ll wait and see what happens. Words, over the years from our government, have proved mostly to be nothing more than hot air. All this is like me telling my teen, “Sure, I give you permission to have a car. But, it has to be new and paid for, in cash.” Then sit back and insist that I support my teen driving.
