The anti-Stupak Express — and the backlash against Beltway incumbency

By Michelle Malkin  •  April 8, 2010 09:48 AM

If Democrat Rep. Bart Stupak, who sold his Obamacare vote and his pro-life principles for a cheap piece of paper, thinks voters in Michigan are willing to forgive and forget, he’s sadly mistaken.

The Tea Party Express is rolling through the state — and organizers expect record numbers:

As the Tea Party Express motorcade approaches the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, local coordinators are predicting crowds of historic proportions – motivated by the betrayal of Congressman Bart Stupak.

“People are angry, they feel that Congressman Stupak betrayed them and they are determined to hold him accountable,” said Mark Williams, Chairman of the Tea Party Express.

The cities where the Tea Party Express rallies in Congressman Stupak’s district will be held are sparsely populated.

Consider the populations listed for each of these cities:

*Ironwood, MI: 6,293

*Escanaba, MI: 13,140

*Sault Sainte Marie, MI: 16,542

*Cheboygan, MI: 5,295

*Petoskey, MI: 6,080

“You are going to see a sizable percentage of the entire population of these cities turning out for these Tea Party Express rallies. That fact alone speaks to how angry people are at Congressman Stupak,” said Mark Williams of the Tea Party Express.

“One of the driving forces for the tea party movement’s momentum is a sense that the politicians in Washington, D.C. aren’t listening to the people they represent. Bart Stupak epitomizes that failing. He has become the poster child of the failed establishment politicians that so many Americans are determined to vote out of office this November,” Williams said.

The TPE will arrive in Michigan on Friday and hit 9 cities through Sunday. Details here. They’ve also hit the airwaves with $50,000 in TV and radio ads reminding constituents of Stupak’s betrayal.

Amid a swirl of rumors about his resignation, Stupak told the Detroit Free Press he’s not ready to quit yet.

Just your friendly public service reminder:

Via Allahpundit, feel the anti-incumbent heat per the latest Gallup poll:

PRINCETON, NJ — A record-low percentage of U.S. voters — 28% — say most members of Congress deserve to be re-elected. The previous low was 29% in October 1992.

“Notably, independents — who could be swing voters in many districts — are the least supportive of the three party groups when it comes to re-electing their own member.”

The trend for previous midterm elections reveals that the 28% re-elect figure puts the sitting majority party in a danger zone. In the two recent midterm elections in which the congressional balance of power changed (1994 and 2006), the percentage of voters saying most members deserved to be re-elected fell below 40%, as it does today. By contrast, in 1998 and 2002, when the existing Republican majority was maintained, 55% or better held this view.

Additionally, 65% of registered voters — the highest in Gallup history, and by far the highest in any recent midterm year — now say most members of Congress do not deserve re-election.

What Stupak did was sleazy, he used a position many people hold sincerely “Pro Life” and used it to get money out of the Federal Government -taxpayer money, for his, and his blocks pet projects. He was just stringing people along, this isn’t just a poor politician, he doesn’t appear to be much of a human being, apparently he has no conscience.

Sadly you can’t trust the public as shown by Murtha’s repeated re-election. Here in Missouri the sheep elected a dead Democrat.

Saying you don’t trust the voters is a sad reality. We conservatives need to get out and talk to the sheeple. I am already talking a blue streak to the dumbocrats in my town. I hope I survive.

Yeah, we’re already putting together a list. (Republicans in VA5 and VA2 will go to the top of the list if they are any good. Will take others into consideration if anyone wants to make suggestions.)

But I’ll still miss that satisfaction on November 2. You think ACORN would let me register to vote in another district? Or maybe several even? I mean, if I drive 15 miles to my east, I’m in a Dem district, and if I drive 15 miles north I’m in a different Dem district, so it’s almost like I live in them, right?

America needs to throw more than a few of these complacent bast@rds out in order to restore the notion that the Constitution and the Consent of the Governed is still relevant in this day and age.

Restoring the Republic will take some bitter medicine and those not capable of the job need to be discarded ASAP or there just may not be anything left to save. The current Congress has by and large amongst them not a shred of fiscal responsibility or a moral compass that should steer them there.

Spending OPM, Other Peoples Money, on new programs while promises like Social Security, MEDICARE, Veterans Healthcare and Compensation have become neglected is just poor stewardship of taxpayer funds and a monumental betrayal of the Public Trust.

Cleaning House in Congress is only the first step but a necessary one if the US is not to become a Third World Nation.

I can’t speak for anyone else, but as a former CNN watcher and current Fox watcher it seems to me that CNN’s journalistic standards had eroded over the years to the point that they no longer provided fair reporting. If they’re willing to report facts as facts rather than opinion, theories, and innuendo as facts, then maybe I’ll give them a look every now and then.

Get rid of career politicians and there would be no need of retirement benefits other than what they contribute for themselves.

I believe that any person holding publicly voted positions should have to file an open disclosure of income (and it’s sources) yearly. That should extend to their spouses since so many have muddied the waters by placing assets in their spouse’s name.
