Identity politics run amok in Hawaii
It’s blue-on-blue warfare among Democrats fighting over the special election in Hawaii’s 1st District.
You’ll recall that far Leftist Neil Abercrombie stepped down earlier this year to run for governor.
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in Washington favors former Democratic Rep. Ed Case over state Senator Colleen Hanabusa. Case is considered more “moderate” than the union-backed firebrand Hanabusa. But for Asian-American Democrats, it’s all about skin color. They’re whining about white male favoritism and making giant, race-hustling fools of themselves.
This is all no surprise if you have followed the ethnic separatist movement in Hawaii and the increasing p.c. militancy of the Asian-American Left.
Oh, and the hyphenated Democrats are also mad that Case had the audacity to raise the issue of Asian-American U.S. Senator Daniel Akaka’s age.
Meanwhile, the GOP candidate in the race, Honolulu city councilman Charles Djou, is reaping the benefits:
This is a three-way race featuring two Democrats, former Rep. Ed Case and Hawaii State Senate President Colleen Hanabusa, squaring off against Republican Charles Djou. It is a winner-take-all contest between the three candidates, competing to replace Neil Abercrombie, who left Congress to run for governor.
The winner will represent Hawaii’s first district, covering urban Honolulu–the district where President Obama was born and raised.
Right now, the race is close: according to a Democratic source, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has conducted an internal poll showing Case at 32%, Djou at 32%, Hanabusa at 27%, and 9% undecided.
And there is some further in-fighting going on here. The DCCC has reportedly inserted itself into this race, sending some undercover help to the Case campaign, including assistance from DCCC Western Regional Political Director Adam Sullivan.
Hanabusa, meanwhile, has the support of Hawaii’s two Democratic senators, Daniel Akaka and Daniel Inouye (who chairs the Senate Appropriations Committee)–meaning the DCCC has evidently split from the wishes of Hawaii’s two most senior politicians, in an attempt to elect the perceived frontrunner with an edge in the polls.
There’s more to the back-story: according to two Hawaii Democrats, Case offended Hawaii’s senators by challenging Akaka for his Senate seat in 2006, campaigning (indirectly) on Akaka’s age.
“He was trying to make the argument that, look, our two senators were 85 years old. Let’s make a switch now and start building some seniority so we don’t lose everything all at once,” one Hawaii Democrat said. “In insulting Sen. Akaka, he pissed off Sen. Inouye.”
“It was the subtext of everything, that Sen. Akaka was old and that for some reason he’s incapable of representing Hawaii in Congress,” another Hawaii Democrat said, adding that both Akaka and Inouye liked Case at the time and were comfortable with him becoming Hawaii’s next senator–if he waited his turn.
Insulted! Affronted! Wah! Let’s hope they feel all that and more when both Democrats go down on May 22. Support Charles Djou’s campaign here.

» Barack Obama: Can we call him a Socialist now?

I didn’t know Nairobi was a district in Honolulu.
I’ve been following this story for quite some time with great interest. I hope that Djou wins by profiting from the split vote.
I’m willing to help fund and support any third party union-supported candidate to further the cause in other districts too.
Oh, and I also find it interesting that DCCC involvement vis a vis Case is not helping; it’s only further riling up the base.
It seems the Dems really are losing their mojo.
Splitting the vote got Clinton elected. Let it work both ways.
So is the GOP candidate, Charles Djou, actually a conservative, or just a RINO?
Ahh yes. Judging a person by the content of their character is so…yesterday.
Just run Kelly Hu.
If all they’re gonna elect is looney leftwing liberals, at least have one whose nice to look at.
Ongoing battle: Isaac Hayes(R)candidate for IL-2 called “sellout” by local mayor.
http://prairiestatepost.com/component/content/article/5-politics/53-african-american-republican-called-sell-out-by-black-democrat
The real question is “who’s Obama endorsing” That’s probably the loser. Let’s he doesn’t start endorsing conservatives.
LOL–riiiiight.
Get that ‘born’ in there.
Is his brother’s hut near?
I seem to recall that if you call someone “Akaka,” the Washington Post will claim you are a racist neanderthol and will run a front-page story attacking you each day for about 3 months.. or am I mistaken?
Hawaii and Puerto Rico can take their independence and get out as far as I’m concerned. But they both know who pays the bills so they’ll sit pat.
Dems: You’re only as old as the V!agra expiration date says you are!
That’s a perfectly pragmatic argument. I wonder why they’re getting all huffy about it.
There’s a minority faction in Puerto Rico that wants independence, and another that wants statehood, but the majority is perfectly happy with the commonwealth status.
I don’t know anyone in Hawaii who thinks of himself as Asian-American. They call themselves locals. But anytime Dems are fighting among themselves its a good thing: identity politics are not.
And now those crazy zany Dems have left themselves wide open to being called “Djou-haters”!
Ha!
Jeet yet?
No, Djou?
Inouye’s and Akaka’s birth certificates are on papyrus.
Senator Inouye lost his right arm in Italy during the war.
{I believe it was against the Carthaginians.}
Djou is a good guy, but he has an uphill battle in this heavily democratic state where motorcyclists are not required to wear helmets, passengers are allowed to ride unsecured in pick-up truck beds, but government knows best on everything else. His “Asian-American” opponent, Colleen Hanabusa, is campaigning on her intent to help Obama accomplish his radical agenda. And this is supposed to be a good thing!
Hanabata can’t make a commercial without mentioning Obama twice.
Oops, I meant “Hanabusa,” of course.
He’s as conservative as you’re going to get here in the People’s Republic of Hawai’i.
He makes Neil Abercrombie look like John Wayne.
By the way, Charles Djou isn’t some Anglo-French guy. He’s Chinese American.
Inouye: “Damn you, Hannibal, damn you and your elephants…”
Salude!
That screws up the joke:
Excuse me, do you have any GREY POUPON.
Salude! anyway.
Hmm, foreign-born parents? Graduate of Punahou School? Ivy League education? A name that lends itself to amusing puns? This guy could have a future.
take it easy, brah. I worked on Reagan’s ’84 campaign there and we sent Mondale packing. Hawaii isn’t all that bad.
In Hawaii, you take what you can, when you can. He has an econ degree from Wharton, and he’s a an Army Reserve Officer – negated by a Poli Sci degree (U Penn) and a law degree (USC). A thousand times better than Hanabusa.
Funny, Inouye doesn’t like being crossed – expect dirty tricks.
Hanabusa’s ads (one of which had to be pulled for false claims she made) claims she worked on a sugar plantation at age 12. Then of course the Dems make you “wait your turn” in politics – just like being back on the plantation…
Fine, but the rent on Pearl Harbor is going to go WAY up…You’re welcome to keep your ships in American Samoa instead…
Naw, nothing screws up a good joke.
Story behind Djou’s name:
His grandfather was a Chinese engineer working for a French-owned company in Shanghai before the war. His Chinese last name is Zhou.
The Frog’s called him Dijou as a bastardization of the Chinese. Later when he leaves China via the British Colony of Hong Kong, instead of writing ZHOU in the Chinese characters, he writes it in the Western letters Djou, and it was recorded as such.
Similar bastardizations and miss-spellings haunt Americans to this day.
Charles Goodyear, the rubber and tire guy, was originally Gudiere.…i.e.
How typical of Dems – both Akaka and Inouye feel entitled to their seats. Two more old bulls that need to go…
The base re-alignment and closure commission (BRAC) has tried to shut down Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard twice. It had become a joke. No Commanding Officer wanted his ship overhauled at Pearl Harbor. Especially a Sub.
Inouye’s seniority is the only reason that it is still open. Otherwise the island of Guam would be the “World’s Largest Naval Base and Shipyard.”
By the way, the Shipyard is marginally better, but still the worst in the Navy.
He pronounces it sort of like, de-Jew, and Obama’s reaction was – “Da Jew? We can’t let da Jew win…”
Yeah, I made it up and it’s unfair since Obama supports our friends in Israel…Oh wait, he doesn’t.
Coming soon…
Dems eating Dems! What a concept. After decades of census enumerating by race, we now have created quite a mess. Way to go dems! How about content of character? How about getting people elected who have some skills at doing the job right rather that being pathetic overspending, pandering liars? Hawaii allowed the one party political system to be a group of either losers or major losers just like all the other one party states.
You got that right, IMO the only reason this is news today is to get that comment on the net/news, especially after the devastating comment posted over the weekend that the media, including the conservative media, refuse to say a peep about:
Here, go to page 31 and read the second paragraph:
http://www.bunge.go.ke/parliament/downloads/tenth_forth_sess/Hansard/RDRAFT25.03P.pdf
From Bob’s link. Not sure who the person is who is talking…
I watch Dog the Bounty Hunter and they use the “Brah” term all the time, especially when they are in Hawaii and not Colorado.
This guy:
“During debate over the draft of a new Kenyan constitution, James Orengo, the country’s minister of lands and a member of parliament for the Ugenya constituency, cited America’s election of a Kenyan-born president as an example of what can be accomplished when diverse peoples unite.”
Link here, though there are links everywhere, just not on the MSM, Fox or even other conservative outlets that you would think would believe this rises at least the level of a mention:
http://www.wnd.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=139481
LOL, yes, thank you for the timely reminder.
Much like Howard Dean screaming “We’re taking our country back” is inspiring, but when the Tea Party says it, it’s …insurrection and “treason”. ROTFL.
Kelly Hu sounds like a good idea at first, but per Wiki, native Hawai’ian and Chinese, that is good, but she also has Anglo ancestors.
She is, however, a raging Obamite, which should count for something in Demonratic politics.
I was bombed by kamikazes at Pearl Harbor on December 7th.
Well, it was offbase in a Honolulu bar, and it was 1988…
After 50 years in Hawaii you just know things aren’t going to change…the Japanese will vote Japanese and only Japanese then claim all Haoles (well actully its Fking haoles…whites) are racist.
Why Fking Haoles continue to vote for the best man, and losing everytime, is a mystery to me.
The Outer islands are a bit more conservative and in cattle country we are a different people.
On April 12th, 2010 at 2:58 pm, Ed
Good one, Ed.
Reminds me of walking (crawling?)through Waikiki in the early seventies with a drunken shipmate.
Japanese tourist: “Excuse, please. Can you tell us how to get to USS Arizona Memorial?”
Drunken Shipmate: “Why? It hasn’t moved since you b…..ds sunk it.”
True, but their are some colonies of Lost Hippies at Naalehu, Volcano, Hanalei, Little Beach, and Nawiliwilili.
Oops….”Warning, Will Robinson. Syntax error.”
“there” vice “their”
I stayed there a year working for Marisco Ind. at Pearl. I was too young for the politics except for dodging crazy Samoan thugs and haoli beach thieves. I preferred Maui.
That’s what Los Angeles class fast attack subs and MIRVs are for. I hear the ChiComs are looking for a port though. A net savings for everybody, although the tourists might be nervous with all the ChiCom sailors looking for Hotel Street.
HAHAHAHA. Yes, with lots of beer and weed and cooking skewers of tomatoes, ‘shrooms and humuhumunukunukuapua’a.
This will work. The Chinese can afford to rent Pearl Harbor, and they pay in US dollars.
US dollars? What’s that? Similar to puka shells?
Puka shells are trading higher than the dollar this morning on Wall St.
So did the Nipponese tourist then pull a short-bladed katana knife and call the round-eye dog out into the street? I must know what happened.
I hope your buddy knew how to employ the business end of a Kabar. Wait, that was a Marine tool. I hope your buddy knew how to employ the business end of a broom. “Sweepers sweepers man your brooms. Give the ship a clean sweepdown fore and aft. Take all trash out to the pier.”
We don’t sweep down. We just “Dive, Dive.”
Naw, actually it is the second oldest joke in the book. I appropriated it.
It would never happen today in the Post-Tailhook, “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” Political Correction Uber Alles, Less-Than-19% Body Fat Index NAVY.
reminds me of the private who had 2+ years in the Army. I said-you do not seem to be doing well. “Not all that bad Sir-I made PFC three times.”
-kamikazes off base?
That is the oldest joke in the Army’s book
no kidding.
The Army has books now? Geez…….
Sweet. Did you get to use the awoogah horn and slap the big red torpedo launch button? In a German accent: “Torpedos loose!” Those must have been good times.
{sigh} They don’t go “Ooogah” any more. The klaxon has been replaced by a soundcard.
It would be good to have more ships there. They’ll come in handy for rescues if Guam tips over and capsizes.
Dammit. All my fantasies are being destroyed one by one. What about “Range 10,000 meters. Mark.” or the classic: “Dog all watertight hatches!” Surely they still have hatches. I suppose that’s some dang computater doing that too. I’m sick.
Oh Man. I’m still laughing about that one. I’m thinking that knothead was much more than drunk. How did the admiral keep from laughing out loud?
Recently the CNO banned all use of tobacco on US submarines.
And next year……persons of cleft genitalia will be detailed to submarines. The first few will be Officers, currently to Trident subs only.
a kamikaze is also a name of an alcoholic beverage.
I manned the rail of the CVN-70 on December 7th, 1988, dress whites, hand salute to the USS Arizona, before going into Honolulu and getting wasted.
I was a little over 1 week from my EAOS and freedom, college, and more heavy drinking, but in an academic setting.
I actually extended 2 months to make the entire West Pac.
All the good ports were on the way back…
Yeah, well that’s going to work out just swell, I’m sure.
Not like there isn’t enough drama between Blue teams and Gold teams now.
I wouldn’t want to be the FRO when that admin change goes through. No.Thanks.
What about that crazy female captain on the cruiser USS Cowpens? Holly Graf. Her sister set her up with a Pentagon job after she assulted one too many crew members. Typifies all that is wrong with military brass.
http://www.militarycorruption.com/hollygraf.htm
Currently re-named USS MadCowpens.
HFire: HAHAHAHAHA…. nice.
@Hangfire:
Too funny.
Charles Djou looks like an excellent candidate!
Check out his web site at
http://www.djou.com/
There are lots of interesting details about this election. According to this web site:
http://hawaii.gov/elections/factsheets/fsbo145.pdf
- This will be entirely a Vote-By-Mail election
- Ballots will be mailed approximately 20 days prior to the May 22 election day. If the ballots are going to be mailed at the beginning of May, you will want to act quickly if you want to support Charles Djou.
- Voted ballots must be received by 6:00 pm on May 22 in the return envelopes provided.
If Charles Djou wins this election, it will be just as exciting as Scott Brown’s victory!
Just imagine how angry Nancy Pelosi will be if Republican Charles Djou wins this election!
An entirely vote-by-mail election?
Oh-oh.
Who is the Postal Union supporting?
The female Dem I believe.
I wish Djou the best.
Exactly! Conservatives need to get better at understanding the detailed rules for each election, so we can protect our candidates from any potential election fraud.
I am reading Karl Rove’s excellent book Courage and Consequence now, so I have a new appreciation for the vital importance of understanding and managing the details in every single election.
That’s because the admiral was doing all he could not to address the representative from Georgia as “ma’am”. We now know that just p*sses off the DC Dems. Just ask Barbara Boxer…
Tell me about it. There are well over 200 known and accepted variant spellings of clan Irvine. (The way I see it, no one can understand what a Scot is saying.)
http://www.clanirwin.org/history.php
Roger that. Just a few of the variations on MacGuffey, just of the top of my head, are:
MacGuffie, McGuffey, McAfee, MacFee, McFee, MacVeigh, McVeigh, McAuffey, MacAuffey………
And then you have my other Celtic lineage:
Wilson, Willson, Wilsen, Willsen, Vilson, Vilsen, …….
The guy must have had bandoliers of Guiness Stout, no doubt.
Good for you … I’m currently reading “Cooking Saul Alinksy’s Goose”, and looking forward to the chapter on organizing Conservatives.
Right now I just at the part where ridicule is a weapon …
This Scotch-Irish guy has it easy:
Cochran, Cochrane…that’s about it.
Shame. It’s easy to keep track of my Scots lineage. Lord of the Isles: MacDonald.
Lord of the Isles? I happen to know the McDonalds came from a line of drunken addle-brained peat farmers. Wait, that was my clan Lindsay. Damm… Where is my Evan Williams?
Welcome….
Wanted to note that the polls are all over the place on who’s ahead or behind in this race. Probably the Dems making stuff up (would they do that? :0 ) to try and sway the sheeple who follow them.
Thank you for the update AlohaGuy! I can’t wait to see an accurate poll for Hawaii’s race! I check Charles Djou’s website http://www.Djou.com every few days to see how he is doing.
Please encourage everybody you know in this district to complete their ballots as soon as possible! With a strict deadline, it would be a shame if the delivery of some of the ballots was delayed until after the election. Getting Djou’s supporters to get their votes in as quickly as possible is going to be key! As YTZGAL pointed out, the potential influence of the Postal Union should not be underestimated.
Thank you for the book suggestion, YTZGAL! I have added “Cooking Saul Alinsky’s Goose” to my reading list. I’ve read Saul’s “Rules for Radicals”, so your suggestion sounds like a fun counter-perspective on Saul.
