A cautionary note about the beating in New Orleans; Update: No Palin pins involved

By Michelle Malkin  •  April 13, 2010 02:45 PM

Scroll for updates…

I’m getting bombarded with angry e-mails about the terrible assault on Louisiana GOP Gov. Bobby Jindal’s campaign fundraising chief, Allee Bautsch, and her boyfriend in the French Quarter of New Orleans over the weekend.

A sample of the messages pouring in this afternoon:

“Why haven’t you reported on it?!”

“Left Wing Media Causing Violence Against GOP Official & Boyfriend Savagely Beaten For Wearing Palin Pins!!”

“Why is Fox news not reporting on this?…Where’s Michele (sic) Malkin and Ann Coulter?”

“…you should be shouting from the rooftops about this assault on Palin supporters in New Orleans that is not even mentioned by LSM”

Don’t lose your heads, people.

This much is clear: Bautsch and her boyfriend were seriously beaten and injured after leaving a fund-raising event held during the Southern Republican Leadership Conference.

The New Orleans Times-Picayune said they were involved in an alteraction with a “group of people” on Friday night.

Louisiana blog The Hayride has tracked all the developments since the incident took place and notes that the SRLC had attracted large groups of anarchists and other liberal grievance-mongers to protest the GOP gathering.

Now, there’s a frenzy of rumors lighting up Twitter, my e-mail, and blogs alleging that the young pair were attacked because they were wearing Palin pins.

That is an allegation.

It is not a fact.

And I am not part of some nefarious MSM/LSM cover-up or anti-Palin conspiracy just because I’m not hysterically “shouting from the rooftops about this assault.”

No one needs to remind me about the Left’s propensity for violence.

But it looks like many of my readers need to be reminded of the dangers of recklessly jumping to conclusions before all the facts are in.

Something awful happened to Bautsch and her boyfriend. Right now, they deserve prayers and well wishes — not a hysterical political circus — while the police investigation continues.

***
From Gov. Jindal’s office, via The Baton Rouge Advocate:

“While there were protestors around at that time, we are not aware of any evidence that the individuals involved in the altercation were protestors,” Plotkin said in a statement.

Plotkin said the New Orleans Police Department is investigating.

“We are refraining from further comment to allow them to fully investigate and ensure justice is done,” [Jindal press secretary Kyle] Plotkin said.

Update 3:15pm Eastern: I just heard from Mr. Plotkin that Bautsch and her boyfriend were NOT wearing Palin pins.

Allahpundit: “What happened to Bautsch and her guy is no hoax — one of them has a broken leg, the other had a concussion and fractures to the nose and jaw — but whether there was politics involved or whether it was an old-fashioned New Orleans brawl remains to be seen…Exit question: If it turns out there was a political element to the beating, can we blame the NYT op-ed page for fostering a ‘climate of hate’ against conservatives? (Exit answer: Yes!)”

How do you know the NOPD isn’t looking at such videos for suspects?

That they are waiting for bloggers to tell them where & how to investigate a crime just isn’t an encouraging sign, Beukeboom. Taking four days to offer even just a bare rudimentary statement with a plea for citizens to call “Crimestppers” doesn’t exactly inspire much confidence in the NOPD’s investigative abilities.

So we either got Keystone Kops, N.O. or this case somehow ended up at the bottom of the NOPD “to do” list, somewhere after “feed police dogs”.

I would really like to hear from the victims themselves to clear this up. However, I agree with valleygreaser–a bunch of filthy hippies beat up two republicans coming out of a republican fundraiser where anarchist kooks had gathered earlier. hmmm…..not real difficult to connect the dots here. Palin pins or not–these scumbags knew they were republicans if they were leaving that particular restaurant. The LSM didn’t need any verification to run with the tea party N-word accusations. There’s a hell of alot more here and nothing but crickets from them…nothing even on Fox News at this point.

    Dear purplepeep,

No disrespect intended, but I think you’ve confuse TV cop investigations with real cop investigations. As one who works in law enforcement (in the interest of full disclosure, I am not a sworn officer) and has many friends and family who are sworn law enforcement officers, I can tell you that it takes time to fully investigate many crimes. I fully believe the NOPD are doing all they can behind the scenes to find the perpetrators who attacked the couple, but frankly if it were radicals involved with the protests, it’s a good bet they’ve already left town which makes the investigation harder and involves other law enforcement agencies. Asking the public for tips is routine and does work. This very well could become a dramatized segment on America’s Most Wanted which would bring it to America’s attention thereby increasing the odds that the perps would be id’ed by some tipster.

So unless you or someone else has confirmed insider information that the NOPD is doing little to nothing concerning this case, then I suggest you keep your uninformed opinions and disparaging remarks to yourself until all the facts come out.

    I agree, Beukeboom, that’s not “disrespect” – it’s complete snide-filled jackassery.

I’m sure that picking up garbage after a police picnic is a fulfilling and intellectually stimulating career, but it really just doesn’t at all enable you to wildly assume anything about anyone, much less make a public display of your very ill manners.

You need to learn that when a person is as desperately dependent on attacking persons as you are that everything else they say is rendered meaningless. It testifies that one has no real experience, knowledge, or relevant insight at all.

I’ve ran into more than my fair share of self-important people online; “Five Star Generals”, “Big Important Lawyers” and other such “legends in their own minds”. You’re not the first wannabee “Cop Expert”.

But, you see, when a person knows the “real-deals” in real life, the clueless meanderings of wannabees is frankly just so much boring & tiring balloon juice.

It’s an extreme rarity when I personally smack around a fellow commenter – unlike you I know personal urine contests are not the purpose of the comments section. But when I run into someone who acts like a jerk for no reason – attacking and insulting myself or other commenters on a personal level, I make an exception. Just consider yourself very lucky you didn’t go off with your snide personal shots at any of our lady commenters here.

    You are dismissed.

To hell with the respect…you don’t deserve it. You clearly have no clue whatsoever regarding law enforcement and law enforcement investigations. You know not of what you claim and your ignorance is only surpassed by your arrogance. I never claimed to be someone of importance. I mentioned my position of employment merely as a reference. I never claimed to be a “Cop expert” so you are putting words into my post that were never there nor implied.

You, sir, if you are a “sir” are just the being the biggest jackass and should be looking at yourself in the mirror.

So I reiterate, unless you have some documented insider information concerning the NOPD and their ongoing investigation then all you are doing is spouting off your completely ignorant opinion and revealing yourself to be extremely assinine.

So keep your nonsense to yourself and shut…the…hell…up.

And stop confusing TV cops with real cops. Time for you to come back to the real world.

One final thing purplepeep, my comment to you was not an attack in any way, fashion or form but an accurate statement of facts. Since you do not have documented insider information regarding the NOPD and their ongoing investigation whatever you CLAIM they are doing (e.g. — “That they are waiting for bloggers to tell them where & how to investigate a crime just isn’t an encouraging sign, Beukeboom.”) is, by definition, uninformed opinion. If you take that as an insult then perhaps the truth strikes a nerve with you. Tough. Wear a cup.

As I said, you’ve been dismissed, so you’re welcome to vent your obsessive need to rage against others for no reason in your Cop-Expert mode. Maybe when you’re in your Chairman Of The Joint Chiefs Of Staff mode, I can enjoy your insights on Sun Tzu’s “Art Of War”.

    Dear purplepeep,

If this is your best shot in terms of talking smack, then bubba, you’re clearly a lightweight.

Let’s look at your some of your response:

This from someone who believes it’s SOP, in lieu of actively seeking suspects, to book a gig on “America’s Most Wanted”?

Where did I state nor imply that it’s SOP to book a gig on AMW? I didn’t. You fabricated that. Quite disingenuous of you. Secondly, you’re showing your ignorance & arrogance again since you assume the NOPD is not “actively seeking suspects.” What specifically is your source for this conclusion of yours? Oh, that’s right. YOU HAVE NONE!

By definition, that’s called an “ignorant opinion.” You keep making them. This makes you look very foolish.

By the way, lad, I can tell you’re THE Cop Expert because you write “perp”. If you can work “Book ‘em, Dano” into the lingo, I bet it’ll sound even more authoritative.

Oooh…condescending, too. There’s that purplepeep arrogance rising to the top like so much pond scum. You’re reading into my posts things that just aren’t there. Using the term “perp” (a rather commonly understood shorthand for perpetrator) doesn’t indicate in any way that I was trying to pass myself off as any sort of “cop expert.” That is a gigantic leap of logic on your part. Again revealing ignorance from you. Try not to fall into straw man & non sequitur fallacies, okay?

Thank you for proving my points about you and your uninformed opinions as well as your open arrogance and condescending attitude. It is clear you are completely clueless and are lashing out at me because I managed to point it out. Let me know when your hypocrisy has ended and then perhaps I can take your comments a little more seriously. Until then, your posts have turned into nothing more than snide, sarcastic rhetoric. Try to refrain from posting any more of your uninformed opinions if you expect anyone to take you seriously.

Speaking of the “topic at hand” if you had actually bothered to read my previous posts, you will have noticed that I actually took the time to provide recent reports on the status of the incident as reported by New Orleans-based news outlets. Apparently you didn’t pay enough attention.

    From WDSU-TV in New Orleans:

New Orleans police are searching for suspects and trying to pin down a motive in a French Quarter altercation that injured Gov. Bobby Jindal’s chief campaign fundraiser and her boyfriend.

Jindal’s fundraiser, 25-year-old Allee Bautsch, and her 28-year-old boyfriend were walking from a Louisiana Republican Party fundraiser at Brennan’s Restaurant on Friday night when they encountered a group of men making derogatory comments.

A statement released by the police department Tuesday doesn’t identify Bautsch or her boyfriend by name but says he was beaten after he turned toward the group of three to five men. Bautsch fell to the ground and suffered a broken leg, and the suspects fled.

A department spokesman wouldn’t elaborate on the nature of the suspects’ derogatory comments and said a possible motive for the attack was under investigation.

Well whaddya know, purplepeep, it’s being reported that the NOPD ARE ACTIVELY LOOKING FOR SUSPECTS! And purplepeep’s opinion is shot down.

purplepeep, unlike you, I’m not going to jump to conclusions based upon uninformed opinions like you have been doing. In the real world police investigations take time whether you like it or not. The NOPD is obviously doing the best they can and it IS SOP not to give out details of an ongoing police investigation until the proper time and place. To do so haphazardly puts any iinvestigation and hopefully subsequent prosecutions in jeopardy. Or did you not know that?

Let me know when you can get your fact straight, purplepeep.

LOL, not talking “smack” – I’ll leave that to the “perps” before you “collar” ‘em with an “APB” and tear into ‘em with a bunch of impressive 10 codes.

It’s always great good fun watching a person who takes himself way, way too seriously become unglued and enraged when others do not take him…er…quite as seriously. It’s double great good fun when the person has absolutely no sense of humor.

Rage on if you feel you must.

Also, Ty, the female victim after the attack was laying down using her purse as a pillow. After she was put in the ambulance, she realized her purse was missing. The only people at the crime scene, after the thugs had fled, were the EMTs and NOPD officers. I’m curious where it was “disappeared” to and why.

    From WWL-TV in New Orleans:

On the Facebook page of Gov. Bobby Jindal, a poster has published a photo tht he claims shows – a Jindal staffer and her boyfriend – who were beaten in the French Quarter.

The couple was attacked after leaving a private dinner at Brennan’s, following the Southern Republican Leadership Conference.
Administration officials said Jindal’s chief campaign fundraiser, 25-year-old Allee Bautsch, suffered a broken leg during an altercation with a group of people in the French Quarter. Her 28-year-old boyfriend broke his jaw and nose and had a concussion during the incident.

Someone, using the name Jake A. Neal, posted the photo.

“I heard sirens immediately prior to leaving the establishment, and saw New Orleans police officers running towards an area located within a block adjacent to the oyster bar. I followed, and managed to grab one photo of the pair being attended to by a police officer before that police officer politely (no sarcasm intended ) asked me to move on. He explained that he was “trying to get this lady some medical attention”, and that he didn’t need to deal with a photographer at the moment. As I said, the officer was polite, and appropriately professionally attentive, so I moved on,” Neal wrote underneath the photo.

“As relates to this matter, I have no political agenda. I can’t say with certainty even that this is the same couple or incident, but I strongly suspect it. The photo may not be particularly revelatory, but rather, simply illustrative. As you will see from the photo, there don’t appear to be any Palin pins evident. Of course, that hardly diminishes the brutality of the event, nor the hypocrisy of the MSM. I think it’s safe to assume there would have been a rush to judgment were the circumstances different.”

According to Superintendent Warren Riley, the couple, whom the NOPD did not identify, were walking from a function in the 400 block of Royal Street when a group of three to five men approached and began making derogatory comments toward the couple.
Investigators said when the man turned to face them, one of the suspects struck him several times and the woman fell to the ground and screamed. The suspects then took off, and EMS was called by officers who were in the area.

Police said they only have a description of one of the suspects, who was described as a white man who appeared to be dirty, in his 20s, about six feet tall with a thick build and thin face. He had a beard and auburn-colored hair in a pony tail. His accomplices were also said to be white men.

While there were protestors outside the event at Brennan’s, it is not know if they were involved in the incident.
