A cautionary note about the beating in New Orleans; Update: No Palin pins involved
Scroll for updates…

I’m getting bombarded with angry e-mails about the terrible assault on Louisiana GOP Gov. Bobby Jindal’s campaign fundraising chief, Allee Bautsch, and her boyfriend in the French Quarter of New Orleans over the weekend.
A sample of the messages pouring in this afternoon:
“Why haven’t you reported on it?!”
“Left Wing Media Causing Violence Against GOP Official & Boyfriend Savagely Beaten For Wearing Palin Pins!!”
“Why is Fox news not reporting on this?…Where’s Michele (sic) Malkin and Ann Coulter?”
“…you should be shouting from the rooftops about this assault on Palin supporters in New Orleans that is not even mentioned by LSM”
Don’t lose your heads, people.
This much is clear: Bautsch and her boyfriend were seriously beaten and injured after leaving a fund-raising event held during the Southern Republican Leadership Conference.
The New Orleans Times-Picayune said they were involved in an alteraction with a “group of people” on Friday night.
Louisiana blog The Hayride has tracked all the developments since the incident took place and notes that the SRLC had attracted large groups of anarchists and other liberal grievance-mongers to protest the GOP gathering.
Now, there’s a frenzy of rumors lighting up Twitter, my e-mail, and blogs alleging that the young pair were attacked because they were wearing Palin pins.
That is an allegation.
It is not a fact.
And I am not part of some nefarious MSM/LSM cover-up or anti-Palin conspiracy just because I’m not hysterically “shouting from the rooftops about this assault.”
No one needs to remind me about the Left’s propensity for violence.
But it looks like many of my readers need to be reminded of the dangers of recklessly jumping to conclusions before all the facts are in.
Something awful happened to Bautsch and her boyfriend. Right now, they deserve prayers and well wishes — not a hysterical political circus — while the police investigation continues.
***
From Gov. Jindal’s office, via The Baton Rouge Advocate:
“While there were protestors around at that time, we are not aware of any evidence that the individuals involved in the altercation were protestors,” Plotkin said in a statement.
Plotkin said the New Orleans Police Department is investigating.
“We are refraining from further comment to allow them to fully investigate and ensure justice is done,” [Jindal press secretary Kyle] Plotkin said.
Update 3:15pm Eastern: I just heard from Mr. Plotkin that Bautsch and her boyfriend were NOT wearing Palin pins.
Allahpundit: “What happened to Bautsch and her guy is no hoax — one of them has a broken leg, the other had a concussion and fractures to the nose and jaw — but whether there was politics involved or whether it was an old-fashioned New Orleans brawl remains to be seen…Exit question: If it turns out there was a political element to the beating, can we blame the NYT op-ed page for fostering a ‘climate of hate’ against conservatives? (Exit answer: Yes!)”

» Barack Obama: Can we call him a Socialist now?

As they used to say where I lived in Wisconsin, “Going to Rhinelander. Things are better up north.”
Amen.
{SIGH} I know, they’re out of business.
Just reminiscing about things I miss, like “hair”.
you got that right, T-Bone…I mean, who eats a primordial reptile??
Hangfire: ‘Hair’ the musical or follicle?
I’m crying…
I’m follicularly challenged. And haven’t seen my genitalia without a mirror for a few years.
Quit.it!
Hey, Spacey,
Ever had “throwed rolls” up there in Mo.?
I went to Carl Albert H.S.
Make me quit it!! (LOL)
Who calls crawfish ‘crawdads’?
(Pssst. Spaceycakes do.)
Crawfish..crawdads..tomatoe…tamatoe…potatoe…patatoe
Kk, i’m back. just picked up 10lbs of boiled crawfish & some beer.
@Ed, a yankee. =)
Hangfire, you really need to get back here more often.
I was there a year ago for my father’s last few days, and funeral. I love going home. Makes me better able to put up with this place.
I’ll be there this fall for the State Fair. Taking the wife.
Having worked for a couple of oilfield service companies around Broussard and New Iberia, which aren’t all that far apart on Highway 18, I learned crawfish aren’t particularly flavorful. They pretty bland.
So people spice them up severely.
Which requires either milk or an alcoholic beverage to relieve the heat. People go to crawfish boils for an excuse to drink beer and hang out.
I do.
Did Plotkin mention if they were wearing any other identifiable pins, like say, of that racist teabagger JINDAL?
Thanks for the update, Michelle. I posted this story at quite a few sites this A.M. before the update.
I agree with T-Bone at #106. I want to hear their story.
And Peddler at #103. Media coverage would be wall-to-wall if the party affiliations were reversed. Especially since they’re on a more intense witch-hunt than usual, lately, for incidents like this.
What I posted at GP:
“Is it getting to the point where we need to have a website devoted SOLELY to the violent acts perpetrated by those on the left, with a daily and weekly rundown of all the provable incidents?
Sort of like religionofpeace dot com does with the violent acts perpetrated daily worldwide by members of the Umma against the rest of the world’s citizens?
I think we’re nearing that time. People who can’t see the big picture can’t see trends. If you can’t see trends, you can’t understand perspective at all.
Malkin occasionally updates us with a list, going back a couple of months, but even those are far from thorough surveys of all the recent incidents.”
Also note that conservative sites post UPDATES like this, if and when they appear, no matter the outcome. Lib sites run with the original story and never again do you hear about how it turns out, if it turns out different from their narrarative. There was a certain Kentucky census worker, found dead…for just one of a thousand recent examples.
Who taught you to spell – Dan Quayle?
arrr arrr arrr
Where I’m from (it’s called ‘Little Dixie’) we call them crawdads. And there are loads of them. I suppose there are folks who eat them.
Hangfire–they throw rolls at Lambert’s in Sikeston. That’s just a little south of me towards where Rush Limbaugh grew up (in Cape Girardeau).
I’ve never been to Lambert’s. I like to eat, but I prefer coffee & a cigarette. Or Everclear and a cigarette–I’m not too picky.
They’re fine boiled, but they’re best in etoufee’.
You have to go to Lambert’s once, at least. It’s a landmark.
My Mother and her folk are from Bootheel. They go “over Sikeston, up Cape, and down Arkansas.” And, they say “Crawdads.”
frontierguy, no disrespect intended either and I don’t know how many times specifically is “quite a few times” is for you. For me, it was probably well over 1000 times in a 20 year period and not limited to just the French Quarter and Mardi Gras/Carnival either as you imply. Statistically speaking, N.O. is about as safe or dangerous as any other major city. If you are limiting your parameters to Mardi Gras and the Vieux Carré then your conclusion is based upon faulty premises and thus becomes a straw man argument. So we will just have to agree to disagree. Frankly it sounds like to me that you have some negative experiences that have diminished and clouded your opinion concerning the city. I read your other comments re NG helicopters and frankly, you are out of line and factually incorrect.
ma_belle, I agree with you about New Orleans and its wonderful people.
Brian72 — WHO DAT BACK ATCHA!
RedDog, I am sorry your experience in New Orleans was bad but I believe that such an experience is an exception, not the rule. As to the NOPD, again the corruption, although present, is overblown by the media and apparently you’ve bought into it hook, line and sinker. No offense taken. I just believe via my personal experiences as well as numerous friends’ and relatives’ experiences the city is so much better than you lay it out to be.
docflash, it’s just as easy to get beat up, robbed and highjacked in any major American city. No more and no less than in New Orleans.
spaceycakes, there’s a Lambert’s in Foley, AL just south of I-10.
Misscheryl, I’m fine callin’ them crawdad’s, crawfish and even mudbugs.
Oh, if any south Louisianian is in my current neck of the woods of Tallahassee, Florida try eating a Coosh’s Bayou Rouge restaurant, the ONLY place in probably 100 miles in any direction to get authentic south Louisiana style food. The owner and family are long time residents of Gonzales, LA and moved to Tallahassee several years ago.
BTW, plenty of good gator tail around these parts as well.
One other thought…back when New Orleans held the World’s Fair in 1984 I went there almost every weekend during the summer months. Loved it!
If you have kin from the bootheel of MO, that explains your scots-irish lineage…
Sheryl Crow is from Kennett. Brad Pitt is from Southwest Missouri (Springfield). Just to name a couple…
Bootheel Missouri is flatter than day-old beer.
Probably not. I suspect that many on the Left would view such a site as a “badge of honor”, “supporters of the revolution”, that sort of thing…
Assuming the information presented is accurate, I would like to draw attention to the FBI’s Crime In The United States (CIUS) report before picking on New Orleans regarding crime levels. Compare the stats with those of Houston or Philadelphia or Detroit…
@Beukeboom, “Coosh’s Bayou Rouge restaurant, the ONLY place in probably 100 miles in any direction to get authentic south Louisiana style food.”
Hahaha, this is too funny! I graduated from high school in 1981 with Durand “Coosh” Willis. We went to the 9th grade Spring Dance together,… I think he drove his older brothers sports car, maybe a Triumph Spitfire or something? Next time you see him ask him about it, … tell him Michele was wondering.
Good for you, girl…!!!
Re: the update
“Mr. Plotkin” says there were no Palin pins. Someone else said they visited her in the hospital and that she said they were wearing Palin pins, and that they understood that they were being attacked by people who mentioned their Palin pins.
What does Mr. Plotkin know? How does he know it? Maybe they didn’t show up at the hospital with Palin pins on…maybe the mob of thugs ripped those offending pins off of them, and Mr. Plotkin asked the Police or the E.R. “Were there any Palin pins on them?” and got the answer, “Nope.”
Why no mention of the identities of the perps? If the political affiliations were reversed, this would have media coverage wall-to-wall, and we’d already have the first, middle, and last names of all the thugs, and probably their addresses as well.
I want to know more, but this whole thing stinks of political violence, Palin pins or no Palin pins, given what we know about the victims and about the fundraising dinner and about the ~200 angry, shouting Anarchists and malcontents outside this dinner.
One guy said, “no pins”.
So…no story, despite all the rest that we do know? That’s despicable.
Look, folks…
It never hurts to suspend judgment until you have FACTS.
Think how nice it would be if the MSM applied that standard to the “cut gas line” of the congress-critter’s brother.
NOBODY has any proof that was connected to anybody with the KTB protest.
We can be better, because we ARE better….
I think we know what the answer is. Just being pc about it to avoid being called more names. They have us running skeered.
Bone,
I couldn’t disagree more. There’s nothing PC about declining to be stupidly WRONG.
Facts are what rational people use to make conclusions. Until we have them, a healthy skepticism is the ONLY rational approach.
Names be damned…!!!!
I think the real story is the lack of media coverage.
It seems this would be an easy story to get to the bottom of… as a broken leg does not stop you from talking.
So media… where ya at? You were all over the N-word allegations in Washington with many very fast press reports… but only a LOCAL newspaper seems to be covering this?
However… every story has a “shelf life”… wait long enough and its no longer a story.
So…do we become a conservative MSM…?
Do we become what we deplore on consideration of “shelf-life”? Or do we extend the story when we have facts?
Isn’t that what the alternative media is all about?
Romeo13,
And is that paper even asking the victims what happened?
And if they do, how much of the interview will end up on the cutting-room floor?
I still have a beef with the idea that an internet journalist (the best kind, but still) calls and asks a guy who wasn’t even there, who works in the office of the guy the victim works for, if there were any Palin pins involved, he says “nope.” and NOW WE HAVE THE FACTS!
Yet another person has claimed to have talked directly to the victim, who claims that there were, indeed, Palin pins, that they were wearing them, and that their attackers even referenced them.
I want to hear what Bautsch and Brown have to say. Not some guy who probably either figured he better not say “yes” for fear of “backlash”, or some guy who hadn’t heard anything about Palin pins therefore said “nope.”, or some guy who called the hospital and they said there were no Palin pins on the couple when they arrived.
How is THIS now “The Facts”?
IF there were Palin pins, and the pins were the catalyst for the attack, it is entirely probable that, after breaking the leg and facial bones of the victims, the mob TOOK THE PINS…and when they arrived at the hospital, nope…no pins.
I said probable. Just think about it.
Lets just see if I am right on this one.
UPDATES AT GATEWAYPUNDIT, pics, video.
The latest from the Times-Picayune newspaper via NOLA.com
No, we DEMAND that the media do its job, and find out the answers to those questions.
The media is given great freedom in this country… but it comes with a responsibility they seem to have forgoten.
This happened FRIDAY night… its now been FOUR days, and the story is JUST now getting looked at.
You have about a 50/50 chance.
But is being correct the same as being right?
Rest assured, I will be blogging the story IF there is political motive behind these attacks.
Even if not, beating a woman is profoundly cowardly and despicable.
TOTAL agreement…
Allahpundit: “an old-fashioned New Orleans brawl”
Have no idea why Michelle would quote the idiot Huffpo-wannabe AP. A young couple decided it would be great good fun to fight off a crowd of violent psychopaths just for the “N.O. brawl experience”? This is a new low in Teh Stupid, even for AP.
I think my chances here are better than 50/50. As was alluded to above, someone spoke to the victim vs some other guy who wasn’t there. No mention of robbery, in fact, she used her purse as a pillow. 1+1+1 begins to add up.
Is being wrong the same thing as stupidly wrong?
Both wrong, MissCheryl – it’s “crayfish”.
Personally, I’d say “no”. How about you?
Your previous post indicated that I may be stupidly wrong. I think there are enough facts and non facts here to make an educated guess. As a journalist, I wouldn’t make that call, but as a anonymous blogger, I can say that I may be wrong but not stupidly wrong.
The sucker bet here is more likely to be that it was just some New Orleans brawl totaly unrelated to political affiliation. Seeing a “pony tail” guy involved increases my chances even more.
So, I can’t say anything about that incident? Are you part of the media then or just a regular pc citizen. What is the spin you want to portray?
I’m surprised that some folks apparently confuse violent assault with “a brawl”. It’s like saying Sharon Tate was killed during a “knife fight”.
Beukeboom #155
Thanks for the update.
If y’all go to the article linked in that post, you can google-maps the address for the dinner, and the address for the attack.
RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER.
I’ll do it.
http://www.nola.com/crime/index.ssf/2010/04/police_release_statement_on_ji.html
400 Royal St. (Restaurant is at 417)
600 St. Louis St., where the attack occured.
Bone,
I was responding…specifically…to your insinuation that NOT jumping to your conclusion was an operation of PC lilly-liveredness.
I have a cardinal rule that maybe you don’t: like Sherlock Holmes, I think it is a profound error to reason without data. That’s me.
I have great admiration for our hostess. I have been (very mildly) critical of her on rare occasion for committing the error I cite above.
Case-in-point…
http://michellemalkin.com/2010/01/26/ugh-acorn-buster-busted-at-sen-landrieus-office-in-alleged-bugging-plot/
Other right bloggers did the same or worse…
You are using reported hearsay about what somebody said the young lady said. Maybe that’s valid information. Maybe not.
This is, partly, a matter of differences in personality-types. I am an INTP. I have an INTJ son. He sometimes thinks it takes me forever to reach a conclusion. I think he’s sometimes too precipitate.
That does not make my style of thinking PC or “skeered”.
Facts
Violent attack
no robbery
pony tail guy
republican who works for the governor
So what are my options:
Gang protecting their turf
Robber who forgot to take the money
Crazy dudes who were high on PCP
Boyfriend protecting girlfriend from sexual assault. After being knocked out, perps ran away but accidently broke girls leg on way out
Dudes just out having fun breaking girls legs
Dudes caught smoking crack pipe trying to escape
Leftover Chocolate Easter Bunny run amok in New Orleans
SAG actors just saying “break a leg”
High school nerd finally catching up with girl that said no to prom date question
Lake Pontchartrain monster came out of the water and attacked citizens
Anti- republican hate mongers egged on by Maxine Waters & Bill Maher aatcked defenseless couple over political views
With the exception of “being egged on” by anybody, that sounds about right to me. I hope the victims will be allowed to speak freely – as opposed to being “briefed” on what they can say by don’t-rock-any-boats political advisers.
I forgot one.
They beat each other up and blamed it on the pony tail guy in an attempt to make the earlier protestors look bad.
She must be tougher than she looks.
Ah, too much fun, not enough time.
and aatcked = attacked
Regardless of the facts surrounding the assaults, I still must ponder why the Republican SLC chose N’awlins as the site for their meeting.
Was it because that’s where everyone wanted to go? Was it because they got the best deal? Or was it a pathetic attempt to show solidarity with the people of the area in a post-Katrina political environment.
I would have chosen Knoxville, Gatlinburg, Charleston, Savannah, Asheville, Myrtle Beach, so many other places.
One point, New Orleans is robbery central, the fact that this pair was not robbed makes you go hmmmmm
See. I told ya.
I’m going to give myself a cookie.
Y’know, T-Bone, the funny thing (that’s “odd” funny) is that the Hayride roundup that Michelle links to actually contradicts much of Michelle’s blog post, including the question of the pins.
According to the (so far unchanged) story, the victim has claimed they were wearing pins. Of Plotkin, who obviously wasn’t there but contradicts the victim’s claim (per Michelle’s update) The Hayride says, “Now, I’m not trying to take a shot at Kyle Plotkin. He is without question under orders to smother this story as best he can”.
If 3-5 men made derogatory comments to me, I would give em a good whooping so they learn thats not polite.
If I have my girlfriend with me, I’d say feet don’t fail me now and do some fast walking towards the nearest police station.
OK, maybe I’d be doing the Olympic trials in either case but the bravado talk felt good.
Purple – ok, ok, ok…crayfish. What the heck?
Ya might wanna hold off awhile before going for the cookies, Surveyor.
Unless you’re gonna have one anyway, eating cookies just for no reason in particular is always nice.
A dirty guy with an auburn colored pony-tail sounds like a white guy to me. A typical hand-out loser. He was making derogatory comments to a white couple?
This was a liberal POS and the media is where? Hellllooooo!!! They outnumber and attack a couple and break the girl’s leg? Like liberals, truly manly stuff there. Conservatives, you are going to have to start carrying heat, this is only going to get worse until we can get the weasels out of power. I know that a place like New Orleans will more than likely charge you for defending yourselves before they would a dreg trying to attack you, but better safe than sorry right now.
Lessee, the worthless MSNBC morons are screaming about domestic terrorists trying to convince people these are the tea party people, as they look away from stuff like this. I’m glad they are losing their shirts in the ratings.
But I agree with you on the catfish-meal blecchh. Used to let my cat eat ‘em though, he thought nothing of chowing down on bottom-feeding scavengers!
I intend to wear my “Palin pin” from now on, wherever appropriate.
Come what may.
My prayers are with the two abused and beaten.
The hatred and illness in some people make me shake my head and wonder…WHY?
And don’t bother replying with the old “they must of hated their mother” bs either.
Of course, they likely did hate their mothers (and fathers, if any were in the home), RIR. But that’s a whole ‘nother topic: spoiled rotten self-absorbed liberal kids.
This stinks. Stinks like the 60′s.
Hey… don’t rain on my cookie parade purple!
In all seriousness… the last time I was in nawlins I had to deal with some drunk freaks oogling (is that a word?) and talking smack… so I kinda thought that may be what had happened in this instance. I don’t particularly blame the city for it though. It can happen anywhere.
“Altercation” is a pretty mild term for an event that involved a broken leg, jaw, nose and concussion to a couple associated with a Republican official. If this were a Democrat, 13 loops would already be in the rope.
Just sayin’.
Besides, it take a lot to break a bone in a leg. Think about it.
Surveyor said:
Easy for you to say. I live in Arkansas. We are still recovering from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Meanwhile, those from NO who needed the help have moved on. Not all were a problem, but many were like locusts.
How does Plotkin know Palin Pins were not involved?
That’s what is called a significant detail, Miss Young Girl Reporter Malkin.
Go at ‘em like Cookie Monster, Surveyor!
Yeah, it’s a word, but I think it’s spelled “ogling” (or so my spellcheck sez).
But I think it’s a pretty reasonable assumption that anytime a group of thugs attack anyone for any reason they will be making “derogatory comments”. The left certainly has no problem doing so even with when the attack is just verbal or written. Think of the disgusting crud that’s lobbed daily at MM, Michelle Bachmann or Sarah Palin, for example.
e.g. the Crash The Tea Party jackass calls Tea Partiers a “loose affiliation of racists, homophobes and morons” – pretty derogatory, yet I suspect ogling isn’t his motive.
At any rate, an insulting verbal attack of some kind or another before a physical attack is part & parcel of a group assault.
As I noted that’s one of the contradictions from the Hayride roundup Michelle to which links above.
You can disagree with MM without the snide jackassery.
What would be fair to ask is if Michelle is aware that due N.O.’s courting of the GOP ’12 convention Plotkin has a strong interest in playing down this story as much as possible (as the Hayride link also notes). “Republicans, come to N.O. and get beat up!” probably isn’t a big selling point.
Yet, the right are supposed to swallow bucket-loads of grief from the left and wait for more?
When do we take off the gloves?
Tastes like ‘gator.
Well there’s your problem right there!
Malvern used to be a nice town. My grandfather was born in the small, small town of Carthage. I still have some friends living between Carthage and Leola… right past the Dallas County line. It’s been 12 yrs since I’ve been back. Got some friends in Sheridan too.
Here’s a YouTube video, taken by the protest mob themselves, of the mob harassing the attendees of the Brennen dinner for Jindal as they exit (this is the dinner the victims attended):
SRLC Protest 9 April 2010 – Delegates Leave Brennan’s
Michelle Malkin is the Joan of Arc of political combat in stout defense of conservatism, common sense, family values and promotion of American society’s general welfare. Pound for pound, no one else in the public eye daily manifests the founding fathers’ passion to a greater degree. She ALWAYS does her homework before she charges into battle… and that operating principle is at the core of why I and so many others so appreciate and respect her thoughts on the topics of the day.
It’s disappointing to learn that some have harangued MM (and others) with angry emails. I appreciate the Almighty’s thoughts on this sort of demanding foolishness provided by Proverbs 26:4, particularly the Amplified Bible translation: “Answer not a [self-confident] fool according to his folly, lest you also be like him.”
New Oreleans is dangerous. Always has been.
I had a chance to visit New Orleans back in 1970 while on active duty at Keesler AFB (Biloxi, MS).
I declined because I knew back then that the people there had no morals and it was a dangerous place.
The decline of America had begun about five years prior. Not the America I grew up in when you were free to walk the streets of any city and be safe.
If it turns out to be politically motivated, will Nancy Pelosi shed a tear?
Crawfish – correct
Crayfish – Yankee term
Crawdad – Used by children and the Beverly Hillbillies because they think it sounds more redneck.
Mudbug
I think you’ll find few here who disagree with you about Michelle’s bravery, TJ.
But as I’ve pointed out, the Hayride link she gave as recommended reading refutes much of what she wrote on this above. Too make use of your analogy – in this case, the homework doesn’t jive with the assigned handouts.
In the very next verse in Proverbs (26:5) the Almighty advises “answer a fool according to his folly”, TJ.
I can’t help it, John – I’m a Yankee Doodle Dandy. In addition to being a resident of the most northern of the lower 48, of course. So that makes it “crayfish”.
Oh, John Deaux; just call me Ellie Mae.
Heck yeah!
Best wishes for a full recovery to the young couple -
It walks like a duck, quacks like a duck and looks like a duck. With all due respect to Michelle, I’m thinking it’s a duck.
I see that The Hayride, the link Michelle gave above for source info on this attack, has again updated their coverage with the video I mentioned above in post #201 (along with other videos). The videos show the jeering, sneering gauntlet the attendees of the fundraising dinner (the one attended by the victims) had to endure as they exited. Why isn’t the NOPD checking these thugs out for possible suspects?
“What drink’st thou oft, instead of homage sweet, But poisoned flattery?”
–WS
bvw–Henry V?
The Hayride seems to be down. I keep getting a “lost network connection” error. Are they suffering a DOS attack?
Okay. It’s working for me now.
How do you know the NOPD isn’t looking at such videos for suspects?
