Guns Don’t Kill Coyotes, Rick Perry Does

By Doug Powers  •  April 28, 2010 11:20 AM

This could cost Texas Governor Rick Perry the endorsement of PETA, but to save the life of his dog, it’s worth it:

AUSTIN, Texas – Pistol-packing Texas Gov. Rick Perry has a message for wily coyotes out there: Don’t mess with my dog.

Perry told The Associated Press on Tuesday he needed just one shot from the laser-sighted pistol he sometimes carries while jogging to take down a coyote that menaced his puppy during a February run near Austin.

Perry said he will carry his .380 Ruger — loaded with hollow-point bullets — when jogging on trails because he is afraid of snakes. He’d also seen coyotes in the undeveloped area.

When one came out of the brush toward his daughter’s Labrador retriever, Perry charged.

“Don’t attack my dog or you might get shot … if you’re a coyote,” he said Tuesday.

Watch out, Governor Perry — this may prompt Larry “you kids get offa my Shawn!” King and Michael Moore to call for all coyotes to be armed so the animals can shoot back and make it fair, just like they did with Sarah Palin’s moose.

In a related story, Florida Governor Charlie Crist screamed like a woman and jumped on a chair when he saw a mouse run out from under his tanning bed.

Must be very afraid of snakes, a bit of overkill don’t ya think? If there are snakes along the trail that can’t be killed with a .22, I ain’t jogging it. But who am I to argue? Fire!

Depends on how you define “Snake”, some of them carry guns and rob people for a living, and certain drug/illegal alien smugglers are often referred to as coyotes. For them a .380 with HP is just the ticket (although I’m partial to a .357 FMJ Rugar Blackhawk myself).

I have a friend that uses a gatling gun to shoot coyotes on his place. Does a good job of stopping them, but the pelts aren’t much when he’s done shooting. :)

The fundamental difference between Gov. Perry and the vile folk who refer to themselves as “liberals” is that Perry doesn’t consider the coyote to be evil.

He doesn’t frame it as being anything but a coyote. This what coyote’s do. They’re hungry, they’re hunters, and they are going to try and feed themselves.

Nowhere does Perry say “I declare war on all coyotes. We will exterminate them.”

All he asked for, and received, was the right to carry a weapon to protect himself and his property, and the right to use that weapon properly when faced with a threat.

Liberals, including PETA, will tell you that the coyote had “feelings.” They’ll tell you that the coyote had “rights.” They’ll tell you that Perry was “mean.”

It’s like there’s a special classification of Stupid, just for liberals. Seriously, it’s like a mental disorder.

Bad idea if he did. I remember reading that, decades ago, ranchers/farmers somewhere in Arizona got tired of coyotes and mountain lions raiding their herds, so they put a bounty on them and wiped them out. It became an area overrun with rodents and destroyed a lot of the pasture lands. They learned about predator/prey relationships the hard way.

No doubt that loading the shotgun was a better idea than going in with an empty shotgun, but I do have to ask (not that I expect you to know):

What load did the owner assume she had in the gun?

Unless she was confident that she was going to get the barrel to within 6 inches or a moving puma, she was going to spray both dog and cat with lead. Yikes.

And re: exterminating coyotes, I totally agree. My point was that Perry isn’t just a visceral whiner, like liberals. He doesn’t view coyotes as something that needs to be exterminated, etc.

Yeah, bad idea getting rid of coyotes. They’re definitely a key part of the ecosystem.

Which isn’t to say that I won’t shoot one if threatened. I backpack and, believe me, there have been times when they sounded like they were right outside the tent.

And that’s when I put a round in the chamber, sit up, wait for them to clear the area, and then un-chamber the round.

I really have to write PETA and ask them

“in this situation which animal deserves to die, and how? Do we let my dog get torn to shreds and die in agony as the family watches, or is the proper liberal protocol to kill the coyote with one round?”

My wife found a Siamese cat once. That cat lived more than 20 years bossing around one dog after another. Her name should have been taco.

Peta is on record as saying that all domesticated animals should be eradicated and only wild non-human bred creatures should be roaming the earth.

I guess my mutt is safe; He certainly was not human-bred and is a bit too wild to be considered domesticated. And I would definitely shoot anyone or any animal that tried to kill him. If time permitted, I would let them pick which caliber as any one of them would do if well placed.

BTW, the Judge or Public Defender makes an excellent snake gun if loaded with .410 shells.

I think there’s a bit of a difference between evolved, and domesticated.

And who, pray tell, domesticated them? Self-domestication? Sounds a little kinky.

would nomads be considered non-domesticated animals?

I’m proud to be a Texan right about now. A friend of mine took photos this winter of a puma (no bobcat this critter) in his neighborhood in West Plano. So, I can understand the Governor’s choice of weapon. I personally carry a Kimber .45 with 230gr. HPs. It works for snakes of all kinds including a Boone and Crockett worthy Texas Diamondback Rattler shot near Cotulla. Thing went 12 feet without its head.
Also kudos to Representative Debbie Riddle of Tomball TX who is proposing an Arizona like immigration law here in Texas.

Too bad that this POS don’t want to protect Texas from a invasion from Mexico.

Maybe Perry’ll come around given the immigration law in AZ (or at least some pressure from the people).

In the meantime, I’ll just bask in the glory of having a governor who can shoot a gun.

I’m pretty sure the late former Gov. Ann (Pothead) Richards could shoot a gun as well. Still doesn’t change the fact that Perry thinks it’s a federal issue. Juan McCain is displaying more sense about it than Perry ever will.

A mere display until the primary when he reverts to his reptilian mode.

    crapweasel,

SatAnn Richards was a gun grabber. She had some measure of cool by being an old lady who could ride a motorcycle, but that was it. Of course, since this is Texas, most of our Donks are still pretty conservative by most standards (though there are still raving looneys).

Besides, technically it is a federal issue. Since the feds are guilty of derilection of duty, I applaud the state of Arizona for doing the job the feds won’t do. I’m hoping that we can convince Rick to make it a Texas issue now that Arizona has taken the first step.

Governor Perry and Attorney General Abbot have positioned themselves as Washington fighters. We’ll see if that is accurate.
