Riot Police Called in to Protect Obama from Out of Control Tea Party

By Doug Powers  •  April 28, 2010 08:28 PM

Jim Hoft at Big Government has some pictures from a Quincy, Illinois Tea Party today. President Obama was speaking nearby about Wall Street greed, and somebody obviously thought the Tea Partiers posed a major threat, because security reinforcements were brought in.

Thank goodness the riot police showed up quickly before something serious happened. Look at these extremist maniacs!

null

And of course you can never be wearing too much body armor when dealing with terrorists who are wielding the dreaded bullhorn of mass destruction:

null

No word yet on how many crimes were carried out in town while the police were being ordered to monitor this seething cauldron of Tea Party rage, but it was a small price to pay to keep the area secure.

More pics and a video of the riot cops — including a very small geared-up officer that leads me to believe it might have been “take your SWAT kid to work day” — can be found here.

Update: A tad more info from the Quincy Herald-Whig:

There were a few tense moments when the crowd moved west down York toward Third Street after the president’s motorcade arrived. A Secret Service agent asked the crowd to move back across the street to the north side. When the crowd didn’t move and began singing “God Bless, America” and the national anthem, Quincy Deputy Police Chief Ron Dreyer called for members of the Mobile Field Force to walk up the street.

Update II: Jim Hoft wrote to say that the above report about the crowd refusing to move is not true, and that the call to bring in the police came from the inside and for no apparent reason (other than perhaps intimidation — or maybe “somebody” claimed they heard a racial slur). More here.

Both the Tea Partiers and the first Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court recognize that this “foreigner” poses a major threat.

Obama’s biological and adoptive fathers were both foreigners.

Obama’s earliest memories are of growing up in a foreign country.

Obama’s wife called Kenya his “home country”.

He is a “foreigner”. And our first Chief Justice warned against such a person commanding our country and our military.

“Permit me to hint, whether it would be wise and seasonable to provide a strong check to the admission of Foreigners into the administration of our national Government; and to declare expressly that the Commander in Chief of the American Army shall not be given to nor devolve on, any but a natural born Citizen.”

Thank you for agreeing that a sizable police police presence is standard operating procedure for a Presidential visit.

I will agree that they should be properly deployed. You do realize that the link provided said, Obama order the presence of the SWAT team and that MM softened that assertion by saying ‘someone’ ordered the Police? Attributing the Police presence to a request of Pres Obama is absurd. It is protocol. The assignment of motive beyond what normaly is standard procedure is just another ‘no fishing story’.

Overreact to Tea Partiers and you put the President at risk.

Yep, all risks should be identified and addressed. No mention is made that other risks have not bewen addressed.

Bottom line, who is safer; Dick Cheney with a group of Code Pink protesters or Barack Obama with a group of Tea Party members? Who has more respect for the Office of President? Tea Party members or La Raza members?

Both former VP Cheney and Pres Obama should be provided the resources to protect their physical safety. [Note: Pres Obama signed an Executive Order to continue former VP Cheney's Secret Service protection beyond what is required by law.]

Respect for the office of President is subjective and we should all ask questions but not make unsubstatiated assertions.

I am unfamiliar with what La Raza has said about the President. I am familiar with the disrespect the Tea Party members have shown to Pres Obama.

You are welcome to provide examples of each demonstrating disrespect to the President.

I believe that this is normal police precautions.

Uh, no. The Pres travels with lots of traffic cops to keep intersections open and facilitate his travel, but not SWAT. If there was a perceived threat serious enough to have SWAT out and about, the Secret Service wouldn’t let him in town for his speech. It’s silliness. Unless of course it’s his plan to make it look like he’s always in danger and needs to suspend some of your rights…

OMG! There’s a picture of a friend of my ex-gf’s aunt. The one who raised her. Geez, who’d have guessed that she was dangerous, ok except for artery clogging sweets that will drop you eventually. Heck Quincy is a tiny town the background of the first photo is the Holiday Inn & Convention Center. It also surprises me that the SS asked the little old ladies to move across the street. I realize that it’s just a two lane road (three and a half to four on the main drag near the Holiday Inn) But those O’Gara and Hess Limos and SUVs in the Presidential Cortege could take anything short of a VBIED or a homicide vest only Jerome Bettis could carry.
Maybe it was a slow day and the Quincy Police Chief wanted to give the SWAT guys a break from raiding the crack and crystal houses a couple of miles away.

Snipers and spotters on the rooftops is standard practice whenever a president makes a public appearance. This is nothing new, and has gone on since the Kennedy assassination.

The riot squad, on the other hand, is completely over the top, and unnecessary.

I see no conceivable reason for them to be there other than outright intimidation.

Oh, ans in normal Presidential security, the spotters/snipers are not police officers, but Secret Service members.

Yes, they do have rifles up there with them. Rather nice, expensive ones, in fact. Cryo-Tek’d barrels, glass beaded stocks… The works.

This picture reminds me of the first time after my retirement that I protested (4/2008)tax day. The protest location was next to the post office in Redford Twp., MI. The other reason for the protest was to highlight our efforts to recall Andy Dillon (d-MI)who had just pushed a huge business tax through the legislature. There were about 100 folks who attended, but 3 retired ladies were among the first to arrive when there were fewer people. Dillon, who never saw a tax he didn’t like and a big-time union supporter, called out his goons. The police chief was/is one of his buddies. They had a SWAT truck parked across the street from us and the goons stood less than 2 feet behind the 3 of us. I snapped a picture of the goon behind me as I tried to control my laughter. I guess they thought they were intimidating us. The lesson learned…take camera, keep your sense of humor, always be polite to police, don’t be intimidated and carry pepper spray openly (just in case the goon assaults) if it’s legal in the area.

I doubt it if the tea partiers were the least bit intimidated. Those riot police guys would have been a good fit for the illegal alien mob in Phoenix a couple of days ago though.

Like Obama, they’re just making themselves look ridiculous. I say, let them keep it up. The more liberals screech, the more Americans move to the political right.

    It is protocol.

So you decided to go out on the limb with a definitive statement.

Care to back up the fact that “the presence of the SWAT team” is protocol?

Unless you lamely just meant that police presence is protocol. That would be lame since you know that the point of this post is the fact that riot gear is being used by the police.

Btw, I think you’re misusing the term protocol. I think you mean standard procedure or something.

Seriously though. What a waste of important resources to deploy cops in riot gear to a Tea Party protest.

You can bet your last dollar some liberal was behind calling them in. When the left feels threatened, they will stop at nothing to put down their opponents. Anything goes in Lib-World. If Granny gets shot in the process, hey… it’s just to protect the greater liberal good.

So the Secret Service asks people to move back across the street after the motorcade arrived and then they called in the riot police.

Can anyone tell me anytime the Secret Service moved protestors away from anywhere that Bush was speaking at? I doubt it happened as it would have been the lead story on the Alphabets and the print media for months as another example of Bush’s disregard for the Constitution. This would appear to have been some sort of order then from someone within the Administartion to keep the people away (I know I am making an assumption, but that is what it appears to be to me).

It seems to me that the riot police were yet another prop to be used by the President. What better way for him to make the argument that the Tea Party is violent then to have a photo-op with Tea Party folk on one side and riot police on the other?
