Valentine, President and CEO of the Nashville Symphony. “Music is what we do, and we wanted to present this concert, against all the odds and challenges, as a way to help people begin the healing process, as a way to help get our community on the road to recovery.”

If you can’t attend these concerts but still wish to help, the American Red Cross is accepting donations for the Nashville flood relief. Text REDCROSS to 9099 to donate $10.

If you have more suggestions, send them in.

From reader Chris M:

Michelle,

As a resident of Middle Tennessee, I have seen the devastation up close and personal. The clean-up has just begun and will last for many months.

I also wanted to point out another way to help. The Local NBC affiliate is having a telethon TONIGHT featuring Vince Gill. My employer, Deloitte, will be offering up its call center and volunteers to man the phones and take pledges to assist those in need here in Nashville. For those interested, the telethon will be streaming live on the Internet.

Thanks.

FLOOD RELIEF WITH VINCE GILL & FRIENDS

05/05/10

WSMV-TV Channel 4 will broadcast Working 4 You: Flood Relief with Vince Gill & Friends on Thursday, May 6, in prime time from 7 to 10 p.m. The telethon will also be streamed live on WSMV.com.

Nashville and the surrounding middle Tennessee communities have been devastated by floodwaters after the area received 15 inches of rain within a 48-hour time period. Thousands of middle Tennesseans have been evacuated from their homes with many losing everything to the flood. Many of the victims do not have flood insurance, and the demands on relief agencies are stretched to the limit.

“These are our friends and family; we always take care of our friends and family,” said Meredith Senior Vice President and WSMV-TV General Manager Elden Hale Jr. “It’s unfortunate that we’re called upon to do this again for our neighbors, but we are very proud to have the ability to reach out to so many people with Nashville’s flood relief telethon.”

All proceeds from Working 4 You: Flood Relief with Vince Gill & Friends will benefit The Salvation Army, The Red Cross and The Second Harvest Food Bank.

Others involved include Naomi Judd, Phil Vassar and Bo Bice.

But I would like to take this time to talk about the Times Square bomber. If the media don’t call this guy a sleeper cell, we might as well give up.

He IS sleeper cell. He IS what you look for. He was sent here to blend in and not make noise or break laws until they activated him. They provided him with a wife who had American citizen children. He got a gun, citizenship, and now knows enough to teach a course on surviving and thriving in America.

Guess who knows this information now? Al Qaeda. This guy is equivalent to a Nazi spy. . . I keep reading how he’s fallen on hard times.

He was sent here as a sleeper cell. He couldn’t be more a sleeper cell if he had sleeper cell stamped on his forehead. Bin Laden could say he’s a sleeper cell.

Pakistan is arresting a lot of people so that they can get their story straight. They don’t want people to know that he was sent for a purpose as a soldier initially when he came here. That’s what they’ve done in Kashmir and everywhere.

Call this guy the absolute enemy or expect many more like him in plain sight. He didn’t fall on hard times, he completed his purpose here.

But this is supposed to be about ‘We Are Nashville’ they are in my prayers.

Nope. To the Lame Stream Media, still refers to him as a “lone wolf”. Never mind the evidence. They still can’t bring themselves to admit that there is a group of people from a certain region that are determined to convert us or kill us.

Here is how it works. Obama administration meets in emergency session to assess situation. Discussions begin with victims of disaster who are major campaign contributors to negotiate terms of relief vis-a-vis continuing campaign contributions.

Then blame is fixed. If the blame is attributable to a major campaign contributor, negotiations begin with that contributor to cut a deal allowing the administration to come down hard on them publicly while handing them a sweetheart deal through Congress.

Fourteen days later, relief plan rolls out.

But when it comes time for rebuilding…Nashville better watch out for the bus and carloads of illegal workers that will be brought in by contractors for their cheap labor.

And, Nashville, be wary of any temporary housing trailers FEMA might attempt to pawn off on you and accept no building materials manufactured in China.

I agree, the real story is how Tennesseeans are pulling themselves up by their bootstraps and moving forward, helping neighbors, and those they don’t even know. Even though the floods are devastating to those who were affected, it’s truly amazing and inspirational to see how everyone is rallying around each other and moving forward.

Why is the MSM ignoring this? You guys are right — because Nashville is taking care of itself. Folks don’t sit around and wait for the gub’mint to come rescue them. They help their neighbors, then they help themselves. Another reason for the absence of coverage? No rioting / no looting. Imagine that!! A major city can flood, and you don’t see large numbers of people trying to take advantage of the misfortune of others.

I’m in western Tennessee, and we got it bad too. Fortunately for us, we live on top of a hill so the water drained away from our house pretty quickly. Other parts of town were not so lucky.

This is the worst weather event in this area since the Super Tuesday Tornadoes on Feb 5, 2008, when an EF-4 tornado hit the christian school Union University and crossed the neighborhoods just a mile north of my home. When the power went out we could hear it pass. It sounded like Air Force One was taxiing down the street. Scary.

My town, Jackson, has extensive flood damage, worse than anyone can remember. The North and South Forked Deer River overspilled it’s banks and flooded Airways Blvd (US Hwy 70), US Hwy 45 north of here and numerous secondary roads are just now beginning to reopen to traffic.

Nashville has more property damage given that downtown got it bad, but the western third of the state did not escape the 15+ in of rain in 48 hours, and three tornado touchdowns in the area. North Mississippi had at least six fatalities from the violent tornadoes.

So the point is that the “Nashville Flood 2010″ started with a deadly tornado outbreak in Arkansas that moved into western Tennessee and then hit Nashville.

Memphis was holding the annual Memphis in May Music Festival that weekend in Tom Lee Park on the banks of the Mississippi River. That Saturday night, the biggest acts were about to start (Alice in Chains) around 9:00pm when a Tornado warning was issued for Shelby county, and the radar image showed the storm had a bead drawn on downtown Memphis, crossing the river right at the Park. Authorities had to evacuate thousands of people from the Park before the storm arrived. It was all pulled off without incident.

After that it was our turn here in Madison County. We had a PDS Tornado Watch (particularly dangerous situation) all day and night, at least three separate tornado warnings here, none touched the ground thank goodness.
Lightening did damage the electronic control on my H/A unit, so we have no air conditioning.

It’s supposed to be 87 degrees this afternoon, and due to the flooding the parts our guy ordered haven’t come in yet. So, we wait and sweat. Funny how you take things for granted that are really little miracles in themselves.

President Obama doesn’t care about conservative people.

The city of Nashville’s local music scene will be the first to organize benefit performances because they are just easier logistics wise.

The “big” country acts, and the industry itself will take a little longer to go through the process of organizing larger events at larger arenas (that haven’t been flooded out), arranging for TV coverage, setting up a donation procedure, and getting the lineup established. These big name acts are always touring around the world or recording new material, not always in Nashville.

To really maximize the publicity and fund raising potential, it will take a lot of prep work by the professionals who do that stuff for a living.

You can’t just set up a flatbed semi trailer on the corner and have Charlie Daniels, Carrie Underwood and Toby Keith show up and raise 3 million dollars. It’s only been a few days.
In the next couple of weeks you will hear something along those lines being announced.

Don’t say his name three times or he will show up to blame it all on global warming and tie that into the oil spill, and push for green energy and carbon credit trading.

I’m sure he will find a way to exploit this tragedy for his pet cause just like he did for Katrina. He probably hasn’t figured out the right tack to take just yet.
