Austin, Texas joins the Arizona-bashing bandwagon
Reader M. e-mails:
I live in Austin, Texas and the city council just voted to boycott the state of Arizona, just like what L.A. recently did. I am outraged and appalled that a city council in Texas, a border state, would take such a shortsighted and ridiculous step.
I grew up on the border near Brownsville, Texas, and experienced first hand the immense problems caused by the burden of educating, providing free medical care, etc. for illegal immigrants. The entire state is burdened by the overwhelming costs, not to mention other issues such as increased crime. The council of the city of Austin is an embarrassment.
Another reader e-mails:
Austin City Council unanimously approved a resolution that calls for ending all business-related travel to Arizona by city employees, unless it is related to police investigations, providing humanitarian aid or protecting Austinites’ health and safety. It also asks the city manager to review all city business with and investments in the state of Arizona and devise a plan to end those ties.
I wonder if pro-life officials in other cities and counties across the country might be interested to know that Travis County is the only county in Texas that uses tax dollars on elective abortions.
And that four of the nine “Central Health” members who unanimously approved that use of taxpayer funds were appointed by the Austin City Council.
Noted.

Nothing surprising with this. Will be more of it as these clowns respond to the press and not the actual legislation.
Still a bit off kilter with why Holder would admit to not reading the bill. We knew he didn’t read it. But to admit he didn’t read it to a national audience.
Now THAT’S stupid.
I am a Texan and this makes me sick Austin! I hope Gov. Perry will make some sort of statement about this. I will not go or do business with Austin, you slugs at city council.
L
Going to guess that Texans in general will have more to say to this city council about their idiocy than folks in California will say to LA’s.
Austin, Texas, like any other liberal leaning city, is full of hypocrites. I heard in a radio interview how one of the supporters of this ban was proud of the “progressive” nature of the city. Austin does claim to be a sanctuary city. But here is the hypocrisy. Illegals are welcome, just don’t settle in West Austin, or any other white areas of the city. Illegals should stay in East or South East Austin. That’s a progressive city for you.
Texans should boycott Austin.
Glad the light is going to shine on them and their liberal hypocrisy. Hope they are ready for what they have unleashed by their stupidity.
jsmiddleton4#3,
Per HA=LA times online poll-94% say LA shouldn’t boycott AZ.
L
Austin has long been a center of liberal idiocy in Texas.
ug. I work at UT Austin (live one county over though, thankfully). This has me really outraged. Austin was just identified as a major drug cartel “hub.” Why doesn’t this useless city council get their act together and do something to, oh I dunno, protect Austinites from the drug cartels setting up shop here, instead of meddling in Arizona’s business. We all know that Texas needs to follow Arizona’s lead. These jokers make me sick. I’m sure they have never had to live around illegals or deal with the consequences of having thousands of them in our city. I’m sure they are safely sequestered away out in nice white West Austin.
I live by Boulder Colorado. Its nothing for me to go out to dinner or go to the mall or go to the movies or buy a vehicle in Boulder, or Denver, or any other Colorado suburb. Or attend a class/symposium at the Unversity of Colorado. But I will no longer be purchasing anything in Boulder itself, so we’re cool there.
But – I spend a lot of time in Texas and Im a life-long University of Texas fan…. this is going to hurt me a lot to not support Austin (SXSW, flying into the airport, going down to the river or lake, etc).
We can play this game for as long as they want to
Note that the resolution bans only travel to AZ by city employees – NOT doing business with firms there. How many city employees travel there anyway? This is a hollow symbolic gesture – Sound and fury signifying nothing.
I always thought of Austin as the “left coast” of Texas anyhow.
wait, I just read the artcile in the Statesman, this is hilarious:
Oh boy, take that Arizona! We’re gonna boycott you, except for that one trip that would cost us $2500 to cancel, and other than that we really have nothing else to cancel, ouch are you hurting yet?
LMAO.
“Calderon said a law that will come into force in Arizona in July, requiring police to check the immigration status of anyone they suspect is in the United States illegally, was already affecting relations between the two neighbors.”
Wonder if anyone is going to sit President Calderon down and make sure he understands exactly what the law says before he continues looking stupid.
The President of Mexico going to speak with Obama about AZ’s immigration law? Now that’s a riot and the epitome of hypocrisy by the left.
http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE64D0PG20100514
This is same bunch of smelly hippies that voted against being in Iraq…
This is due to all the yankees moving to Texas.
Austin (in its mind) is a mini San Fran.
Pox on all of them.
Republicans here are unorganized.
Nothing like have strong convictions except when they get in the way of your wallet.
I’m sure some real Texans can confirm this, but isn’t Austin where they keep the Texas Moonbat herds?
These idiotic proclamations from city councils usually means one thing. Their city is in dire financial stress from liberal spending. They always try to find ways to change the subject. Projecting issues irrelevant to local city business is the Democrat way of life. Hopefully someone in Austin will ask each council member if they actually read the AZ immigration bill/law and how much debt does the city have under its belt.
It’s really too bad because Austin is a great city, and is beautiful as well. It’s a shame that a bunch of libtard council members are making it the stigma of Texas. Being a musician myself, I’m not sure what it is about the music scene in general that breeds so many idiots, which I assume is the reason for these libtards getting elected. Wouldn’t happen in any other Texas city (I’d hope not, anyway).
Well, most, anyhow. They tend to nest in colonies. Austin is our own little fruit-cake in the heart of Texas…the seat of government, naturally.
The BUYcott seems to be working WAY the hell better than anybody’s boycott against Arizona…
When Texas secedes, we’ll leave Austin County to California. What a disgrace to the rest of us..
Thanks!
Austin. The ‘Frisco of Texas.
Well, isn’t Robert Rodriguez, the director, from Austin? And isn’t his new film ‘Machete‘ bashing Arizona (f* Arizona trailer) before it even comes out? And wasn’t his movie made with Texas taxpayers’ money?
It’s hard to when they have the coercive power to tax.
Austin has joined the ranks if ignorants who want to punish a state for doing what the feds have refused to do. When the Republicans had the chance under President Bush to secure the border, they did nothing. Gov. Perry doesn’t want an Arizona-type law for Texas, instead choosing to pander to hispanics. But he has forgotten he’s pandering to the wrong group – the illegal aliens. There are those of us who want an Arizona-type law in Texas. This story is a slap in the face of all Texans. Austin is too liberal, but it’s our state capitol. Perry has a choice to make – side with the liberals and illegal aliens, or side with Texans and Americans. It’s time to choose.
Yeah, they call in the University of Texas.
Im sure all my friends in Frisco, Tx, in no way, want to be associated with Cali. And I lived in Berkeley too… there must be something wrong with me deep down. next thing you know I’ll be living in Madison or Cambridge
As explained by a Texican to a young Army Lieutenant from Arizona so many years ago:
AUSTIN AIN’T TEXAS.
Even in Pure Heart Land (Arizona) We have Tempe and TooSoon with the Properly Perturbed Persons from the universities that somehow think they are useful persons (football teams excepted).
Yes swede I feel properly chastised and living in deepest remorse but I repeat:
AUSTIN AIN’T TEXAS.

Forty-ninth Legislature

SENATE BILL 1070-Racist, probably Islamophobic, Homophobic and a violation of handicap parking, State Law on Illegal immigration.
As it is nominally 16 pages long is may not be suitable for Trolls. Sorry, no pictures.
Lots of us do, but just call it “taste”.
If/when we secede, we’ll keep Travis County. It will be self-selectively cleansed. “Birds of a feather…” and all that…
“Republicans here are unorganized.”
Well maybe this decision by Austin’s leadership will motivate them to get organized?
You have to expect this Austin isn’t like the rest of Texas.
Since Austin loves the illegal aliens so much that they will boycot Arizona. Give Austin back to Mexico. Mexico should be happy, and all the progressives should be happy.
If Texas had the same bill as AZ would Austin boycott Austin?
Actually, the political class and intelligentsia in Austin isn’t like the rest of Austin. As in LOTS of other places, “representative” government sometimes produces aberrations.
Gotta wonder what pressure this is going to put on Gov. Perry. Yes he said a law exactly like AZ’s is not for Texas. That does not mean NO law is suitable for TX.
So now is there increased pressure for some kind of law on the state level?
I just love it when the left, as it does so often, shoots itself in the foot.
Unfortunately occasionally a few break through the fence and we have to round them back up.
If the conservatives in Texas are not organized, they need to get organized fast. Every step that Arizona takes to lead people back to the constitution makes every Texan look like a braggart full of hot air.
For *years* I’ve heard the phrase “Don’t mess with Texas”, and for years have seen strong patriotism to the USA.
Please don’t let us down guys/gals. This country needs the strength you’ve been boasting.
Do you really want “Don’t mess with Arizona” in the history books?
Now that details are coming out about that movie Machette and tax payer money from Texas being used to help make it gotta wonder just how much Texan politicians are going to enjoy Austin acting in a way to make the light shining on them even brighter and brighter.
Good work Austin!
So now the Gov. Perry’s office is going to have to answer how Texas tax payer money went to making such a horribly divisive, hate filled and inciting movie.
Austin, better known as the People’s Republic of Austin…
A substantial number of progressives inhabit Austin, as you would expect being home to the University of Texas. I’m so fed up with the boycotts and the attorney general of the US saying he hasn’t even read the Arizona legislation, and he was basing his criticism on press reports. Great. That’s why he’s the chief lawyer for the country, so he can react to hopelessly biased, inaccurate press reports. This administration is in way over its head, completely and without hope.
I am SO glad I got out of South Austin 3 1/2 years ago and moved to the relative sanity of northern Williamson County.
I went to one council meeting when I lived there and it was a joke. They (the council) will give you the podium red light and shut off your mike (in the interests of “time”) if they don’t agree with your opinions.
BTW, just saw the trailer for “Machette” and I am stunned. NOT GOOD.
I wonder how many land owners along the Texas border need to be murdered before Austin wakes up.
I lived in TX most of my life, lots of family and friends still there (not in Austin). They all like the cheap labor.
Eso es egoista y estupido.
Austin is still full of hippies.
Not just Perry, but all politicians need to be put on the spot:
Are you with US or the illegal aliens?
How could Texas taxpayers approve of money going to make a movie that is so blatantly anti-American?????
We weren’t asked. The decision was made by the Texas Film Commission which is an office of the Governor.
Not to defend Perry who is an illegal lover of the first water, but if the film commission had the ability to deny funds based on the script, then they would have to fight charges of first amendment violations.
If it wasn’t for the fact that the other person running for Governor was Bill (bleed the taxpayer) White former mayor of the Sanctuary City of Houston (which is bankrupt in all but name thanks to Bill White.) I’d be looking for some other candidate to grace with my vote, but there doesn’t seem to be much of a choice out there.
Can any of these protesters read???
I guess it is not important enough to know the truth. Instead, these whiners need to have something to protest. All of this just cheapens American citizenship. We get all the responsibility and none of the perks while the illegals get get to live off the nanny state. Boycott away, it will come back to bite the boycotters.
Rorschach,
You’re in a tough spot there in TX, no doubt. Personally, I can’t vote for anyone who won’t uphold the rule of law. If there weren’t any other candidates on the ballot, I’d be forced to leave that line unmarked.
I know that others have already said it; but I just have to add my two cents’ worth:
…idiots….
This issue is leading to trouble for America. How can it happen that illegals have more rights than citizens? How dare these City Councils assert judgement over another state’s laws and with such arrogant disrespect for the taxpaying, voting residents of their own state and Arizona as well.
The Los Angeles City Council, without any outreach for input from their own constituents, just did the same thing and everyone but the illegals and our politicians, are mad as hell.
It is becoming more clear every minute that the illegals must be deported, and the border closed to everyone until this is organized. The citizens of this country are not going to take this crap anymore. Thank you Arizona for initiating the beginning of the real “comprehensive immigration reform” which is to deport illegals, close any business that hires them, arm the border and close the border.
we don’t need no stinking truth.
Add another city to my boycott list. Austin is a nice city: it is unfortunate that it is run by racist minorities and minority wanna-bees & apologists.
It’s been years since I’ve stopped off in Austin, not even for a tank of fuel. TX is a big state and I don’t need the aggravation of supporting wannabe moonbeams. I’ll now go out of my way to let them know it too!
Luckily for TX, their governor is the weakest governorship in America. Makes our governorship look like a dictatorship.
I just sent an email to the Austin City Council. Just google it and there is a form you can fill out. I hope they hear from a lot of angry people.
Time to move the capitol to San Antonio or Paris.
Austin is the San Francisco of TX. It’s a COMPLETE embarrassment! The bohemian hippie socialists set there roots there long ago and have RUINED a once beautiful historical landmark!
We only visit to tour the capital.
I’m glad that Texas keeps its liberals all in one spot, kind of like a red-light district in San Diego or Norfolk
Cut ‘n Shoot, Floydada, or Fluvana would be better…
REALLY??? Are you starting THAT again?
Perry vs. Schwarzenegger ~ at least our gov. not a “girlie man.”
That noise you keep hearing is liberals wetting themselves in faux outrage at Arizona. It’s amazing that when 2/3 of the country supports Arizona, liberals press on with their ridiculous “boycotts”. I’d love to see Arizona “boycott” energy deliveries to Southern California for awhile.
And come November, liberals still won’t understand when they’re beaten like rented mules.
Guess all these cities and others better start boycotting the USA because the Arizona law just mirrors the federal law.
Imagine Arizonans want to enforce the federal law. What would happen if they passed a law to arrest bank robbers or murderers that fall under federal jurisdiction? Be boycotted for that too?
The false indignation of the left is getting very worn out. They’re not happy until there is some sort of division going on.
Democrats – The Party of Schisms.
In an interview after his retirement, sportscaster Howard Cosell remarked, “What’s popular is not always right, and what’s right is not always popular.” It seems to be popular for the media and other open-borders wackos to bash Arizona. Well, if I didn’t just have a vacation, I’d travel to Arizona tomorrow.
The Gov. is part of the North American Union problem. Search CFR North American Union.
Perry has sold out to the globalists, and should be tried for treason.
U of T offers up the oxymoron of the day: universities and colleges are establishments for higher education.
Legalization of Pot?
Just how high go they can man, I mean go how high, or was that high go how?
That?
Well, boycotting Robert Rodriguez movies, that won’t be too hard, but its a freaking shame that Jessica Alba either hates America or will whore herself out as an America hater for a paycheck, because she is hot.
I don’t skip movies just because some of the cast are loony libs, or I’d never see a movie. But there are a few, Sean Penn comes to mind, that automatically make a movie no-go for me.
Actually, DeNiro is not hot, unless maybe one is gay and likes old fellers, but he is more likely to be in a movie I’d want to see, but if anti-Americanism becomes a pattern from him, well, he can ESAD as well.
ACTUALLY Phil is correct. Under the Texas Constitution the Governor has little actual power. The most powerful seat in Texas state government is the Lt. Governor. He is the President of the state Senate and due to the Senate “rosebush rule” he can control what bills are allowed to be heard in any given session. I’m probably going to get a detail or two wrong but what they do is every session the first bill out of the chute is a bill concerning the planting of roses in the Captiol courtyard or some such drivel. it is then debated. Bills must be heard in the order that they are filed so until this one is dealt with, no other bill can be debated unless 2/3 of the Senate agrees to have a bill jump the line. but of course someone must be recognized by the president so they can make such a motion, and if the Lt. Gov doesn’t want it to happen, you don’t get recognized.
Most of the students at the College of Engineering, especially the Petroleum Engineering students, don’t have the time or intent to spend most nights stoned or drunk on 6th Street.
You have to be an RTF or fine arts major like McConahey or Rodriguez to find the time to smoke pot while playing the bongos naked.
UT students had to take a minumum number of hours of US history, and thank goodness I had been in the Navy first, and done some reading, because that was some first class anti-American propaganda in those classes, which I could regurgitate well enough to pass with easy “A”s. Playing moonbat libtard for a good grade is remarkably easy.
The big debate (no matter to me) around 1989, when I tested out of freshman composition, was whether the class would be renamed and reformatted as “Oppression Studies” by the English Department.
No, that isn’t a joke. Nor was Toni Luckett, Black and Lesbian, elected Student Council President. For being a Black Lesbian…
OK, we didn’t get high, but about every third week during the warmer weather months, the student SPE chapter did meet in Eastwoods Park on a Friday afternoon, across from the Law School, not far from “The Posse”, to enjoy cold adult BEvERages. Shiner.
Despite his many flaws (but I don’t think he deserves hanging for treason) I’ll vote for Perry in what should be a tight race against sleazy liberal Bill White, who wrecked Houston’s finances and supported day labor centers so people who’d hire illegals off the books would know where to find them.
Voting for a fringe third party candidate who might get 2% of the vote to teach the Republicans a lesson, it might feel good, but putting an Obama ally in the power in Texas, would be stupid.
But if P. Phil and others are in Texas, they are free as American citizens to vote for a sure loser so they can pat themselves on the back while they call others who actually work to make things better “RINOs”.
I don’t know what obscure Libertarian or Constitution party or Bull Moose party candidate will be on the ballot along Perry and White, but I’m sure they’ll be at least one.
Texas Joke:
Q: Why wasn’t Jesus born in Louisiana?
A: They couldn’t find a virgin or three wise men.
I’m from Texas and I guess I’ll be buy/boycotting Austin!
How do they get away with public money for abortions?
Austin is just PO’d because the Phoenix Suns beat the Spurs in 4 straight games!!! Sore losers!
and probably illiterate because they haven’t read the bill…… how many times do we have to say it: “Read the Damn Bill!!” then open your mouth when you understand what it says.
BUYCOTT ARIZONA: http://www.standwitharizona.org
I’ll boycott Austin products, with the exception of Lammes…….
Phil’s from Calif.
He needs to clean up their mess before accusing TX of mis-managing ANYTHING!
Bill White = uber-liberal / socialist who left Houston in shambles!
The Liberal buffoons can not find money for their own city services or protections.
But they are damn sure they won’t be spending (money they DON’T have) in Arizona!
I guess they are too smart to see the irony here.
A panhandler in LA had placard saying he too won’t be spending handouts in Arizona.
First of all, you completely missed the point of my comment. That seems to be your standard tactic. Reread it my comment. If you don’t understand it, have someone who can read standard American English explain it to you. Texas governors have the least power of any governor in the US. That is not my opinion. You don’t really live in TX do you?
Second, what is this thing you have of connecting me with comments about Rick Perry? You were on me all day yesterday about that. Why? And now my comment is what is starting that? Re-read yesterday’s threads and show me exactly what I said that triggered your vitriolic attacks against me. Cut and paste it here. Otherwise STFU!
You’ve made it clear that you are a Perry supporter. Good for you. But using your own bigoted rule that Californians are all left-wing nuts because Nancy Pelosi is from SF which is in CA, wouldn’t I now be justified in labeling all Texans similarly as left-wing nuts because Austin is in TX?
Start making sense. And if you need a straw man to make your points about your love of Perry, pick on someone else. You have me confused with someone else. In fact, you have me confused for many other commenters on this blog.
Gov. Goodhair not withstanding, I’ll probably vote for him because while he’s dumber than a box of rocks his handlers keep him toeing the line of small government and fiscal responsibility annoying the snot out of liberals in Houston and Austin.
Austin, they’re mostly ex-patriate Californians whose first wave arrived in the 1960s and hopefully last wave is in process of arriving now. They’re fruity, nutty and oatey with nuts mixed in but kind of an entertaining mix. If you’re good and drunk on Shiner Bock and a few cold Margaritas and you only see the entertaining aspects. Call it Texas beer glasses.
San Diego City Council condemned Arizona too. Guess the geniuses here never bothered to check and find out that a really big chunk of summer tourists are Arizonans. The council members are getting some nasty grams from the beach hotels who are getting enough cancellations for the newspaper here to write about it. I am planning my Grand Canyon vacation this year, always wanted to see it, it is close enough and Arizona gets my support for having the nerve to defend itself. I want to let them know the morons running my city don’t speak for me!
I live just outside the Austin area. We were gerry mandered into Lloyd Doggett’s congressional district, because he gets enough liberal support in Austin to be safe. The city council are San Francisco wannabees. It is embarrassing. Many of us in this area avoid Austin at all costs. When my wife and I heard about the city council’s vote, we changed our vacation plans and will add a trip to Arizona this summer.
Boycott CA wine….

Naturally, you can prove that. I have a suggestion for all of you provincial Texans who seem to believe that the rest of the country is populated by idiots. Get in your cars and visit the rest of the country up close. And leave your obnoxious attitudes at home. You’ll be surprised how ill-informed you are. Most of America is populated by great people who despite being strong, choose not to be blowhards about it.
On May 15th, 2010 at 5:19 pm, Pasadena Phil said:
Only to the extent that one can in Texas (records of home buyers/sellers) unfortunately. But whether they came in the 1960s wave, the 1970s wave, the 1980s wave, the 1990s wave or the current wave. They come with to Texas and specifically to Austin having sold their overpriced homes with more money than sense driving up prices for good cattle land in the hill country and turning it into ‘gated estates’ just like they left behind. H**l, we need a law banning immigrants from California who bring their kooky lame brained ideas with them.
Now as the ‘provincial’ Texan being singled out here. I’ll have you know that I once owned a residence in Newport Beach (near 16th & Dover) and in Irvine (near Bryan & Eastwood) until the idiocy of the People’s Republic of California became too much to bear. So, yes, I’m one of the ex-pats but I learned to assimilate Texas culture and ways, learned the language and fit in with the folks here. Didn’t hurt that I’d come from Texas to California either.
As to the rest of the country, I’m pretty comfortable with Arizona and Nevada, the folks in New Mexico are pretty decent too. Same with Utah, the Dakotas and Wyoming, Parts of Idaho I have to avoid being the wrong color and creed but for the most part except for ‘those’ kind of folks, lord love ‘em’ those states are mighty fine too. Now I’m not big on the politics of Minnesota or Michigan or Illinois, but there’s some fine folks up there to the North despite having been on the wrong side of the late unpleasantness. Virginia is kind of a mixed bag because of the proximity to Washington
AC, I mean DC, North and South Carolina are like home to me. West Virginia, rural Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana if I don’t have to count New Orleans which I loathe, Kentucky, Tennessee and Florida. Pretty much most of the South are all places I’ve spent time in and even resided in a time or two. Circumstances forced me to spend time in Wisconsin where the folks are nice enough but their state government is downright communist (in fact they had the only card carrying communist in their state government I’ve heard of.In fact about the only places I’ve had problems with the folks are in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Connecticut where they’re too pushy and think they’re better than those of us in ‘flyover country’. Then of course there’s California, Oregon and Washington which despite being very pretty places and home to more than a few friends, but as a whole they tend to believe that they too know more than those of us who cling to our religious texts and our guns.
Kind of like people who speak of things they know naught about.
Yep just a provincial Texan served in 125 countries, been through just about every state except Vermont and Maine.
We were gerry mandered into Lloyd Doggett’s congressional district, because he gets enough liberal support in Austin to be safe.
Not safe anymore. Say GGGood by to LLLLoyd, if you can find him.
I have two brothers living in the Austin area. One lives in chichi West Austin in the Westlake area, where they have 4,000 square foot homes, but are sure to have low flow toilets because they carrrre about the environment.
The other lives in Round Rock, which reminds me of my Houston subdivision in both people and mores. Round Rock is in Williamson County, and only partially stained with the idiocy of the wackos in Travis County.
I hate going to Austin, but enjoy Round Rock.
ssnark, haven’t been to N.C. lately, have you? It is the most illegal alien friendly state in the south. Illegals can still get licenses and vehicles registered there. Many are getting them there and coming here to VA.
On May 16th, 2010 at 11:29 am, Virginia Patriot said
I have to admit the last time I was in NC went straight to Fayettenam and McKellars. So, I wasn’t aware of them being illegal friendly. I guess I should pay more attention. Although on that note we’d have to include Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Michigan and a few other states. The folks are nice enough but their governments stink.
Austin is no surprise. The progressives have taken over this once great city and turned it into a bastion for the “bleeding heart” liberal, “artsy-fartsy” crowd. And…because of that, I have refused to go back. Boycott anyone?
I am boycotting Austin. My next trip will be to Arizona. Austin is in Texas but it isn’t Texan.
Now Columbus, Ohio.
Or at least the mayor’s office:
