Mexico Tourism Promoter Running Threatening Ads in Arizona Newspaper? Updated

By Doug Powers  •  May 22, 2010 01:05 PM

**Written by guest-blogger Doug Powers

It seems that “Visit Mexico” bought an ad that ran in yesterday’s Arizona Republic (how long it’s been running and if it’s in there today, I’m not sure).

I got the heads-up about it after seeing this Twitter post from Sheriff Joe Arpaio:

null

So I clicked on the link and checked out the ad.

If you live in Arizona (or anywhere else in the US for that matter), does this make you want to visit Sonora, “Arizona’s neighbor”?

null

The ad certainly doesn’t imply that somebody in Mexico is on the lookout for you so they can bring over the welcome wagon, does it?

Update: “Visit Mexico” might be a little more welcoming to Belinda Carlisle — and they can have her.

Update (MM): Via commenter beachmom:

I just called and spoke to a man from the Mexican tourism board in Sonora.

Apparently, the Arizona Republic cut off half the ad. It was supposed to say …looking for people from Arizona who want to have fun” There are also supposed to be families having fun reflected in the glasses. The A. Republic is supposed to print corrections today and tomorrow.

By the way, they aren’t mad about Arizona’s law. They want the drugs and illegals to stop too. He said the drug and illegals trade are hurting them badly.

I suggested they call Fox News and ask to come on to talk about it. He wrote it down and said he is going to tell his boss. We’ll see.

The state of Sonora has actually been pretty supportive of the efforts to stop illegals and drugs. Their governor has a history of going against the rest of Mexico.
We’ll see, as I said. Maybe he was telling me the truth. He seemed upset and he loves the US. He went to school in VT.

If you have to save money for years to spend 5 days here, you really can’t afford to come back and spend weeks in a hotel waiting for the defense to stop all delaying tactics. All the defense attorneys here demand that their client face their accuser in person, as is their right. Written affadavits just don’t cut it.

Must be. Otherwise I can’t figure out what this is trying to say. First glance, it looks like a warning to Arizonans who are in Mexico illegally. Why else would military personel be looking for them with field glasses? Moreover, why would Arizonans be in Mexico illegally, except maybe to buy drugs or evade the law? If the intent was to intimidate Arizonans in response to the new law, it makes no sense. Repulsing potential tourism would seriously hurt businesses and jobs at the destinations – more than helping illegals in Arizona. Can’t get my head around it.

Re visiting Mex, I would not hesitate to visit Alcapulco or Cancuun again. I had a blast and the Myan ruins and other sites are fascinating – but moreover the people there were kind, caring, and genuinely concerned with our comfort, wellbeing and safety. Like any developing country there are places you don’t go, times not to travel and precautions to observe. Kids on spring break are not noted for their caution and common sense. The resort and tour people are good folks trying to make a living in a country where it is hard to do so. I wouldn’t penalize them for the stupidity of the government or drug people.

I would. Until the Mexicans get their government under control it will continue to be controlled by the approximately 36 families that control pretty much everything there. That being said we need to clean our own house and get rid of the pretender in chief who at last count has used 7 to 10 different social security numbers.

You’re right, with the controlling families augmented by the drug lords – Mexico is a feudal society on steroids. Poverty level now is 47%, inflation and unemployment out of control and GDP down 15%. It’s sliding from a developing country back to a 3rd world country.

But the tourism folks taking care of my visit are genuine, honest hardworking people doing everything in their power to make their country a better place – and they generate jobs. If you put these folks out of work to protest their government – WHERE DO YOU THINK THEY WILL GO? Do as you see fit, but boycots more often than not are ineffective and ultimately injure unintended people.

Thankfully it was probably just a crank phoning in a threat, but it closed the entry point for hours.
Two things surprised and disturbed me about the incident. Considering the atmosphere at the time the incident didn’t make more than the local news. Second, the local Customs/Border agents didn’t have a bomb sniffing dog on site. They had to call in the Marines from a local Marine corp air station to bring theirs.

Isn’t that amazing for us hatefilled nazi white folks here in AZ!

I guess we’re just too stupid or too busy looking for Mexicans in our bushes to have thought about a demonstration.

    Imagine.

    My boycott of Mexico dates back to the 2005 World Cup soccer game in Mexico;
the Mexicans booed our National Anthem and shouted “Osama, Osama” while the American team played.

I remember that as well. Why do we want to allow people who don’t like us to ignore our laws and inundate our country?

    “our country?”

You forget, they think it is THEIR country. We’re the invaders who are here illegally.

You could cede all of the territory back to Mexico it claims and within months the whole danged thing would look like Tijuana. Those areas, where they’ve been hiding in the shadows :( are pretty much no-go zones now.

Now they have Mexican Pirates on Falcon Lake near Zapata, Texas.

    From the article:
“According to a report by KENS-TV in San Antonio, authorities have confirmed three boats have been looted so far, some by a deadly Mexican drug cartel whose buccaneers brandish machine guns instead of swords and canons”

Read the article it also includes the current statistics on OTM’s:

Based on U.S. Border Patrol statistics, there were 30,147 OTMs apprehended in fiscal year 2003; 44,614 in fiscal year 2004; 165,178 in fiscal year 2005; and 108,025 in fiscal year 2006. Most were caught along the U.S. Southwest border

Yet we backwards redneck bigots Arizonans treat it with respect. Not ONE demonstration outside that office complex.

Most of us are too busy working so we can pay our taxes which supports those with nothing to do but complain, protest and cash their welfare checks.

Can you say “Aztlan”? Of course you can!

What did Mexico do with all those territories before the gringos “stole” them? Oh, I know, basically nothing unless you want to include some wealthy Spanish legacy ranchers and Mexican raiders who killed native american tribes or kidnapped them for slave work in their mines. Spain was the colonizing country anyway. Mexico was just a clueless beneficiary of Spain’s collapse. Sorry Atzlanistas. No harm no foul.

The state of Sonora has actually been pretty supportive of the efforts to stop illegals and drugs. Their governor has a history of going against the rest of Mexico.

Maybe Sonora should secede. They wouldn’t be the first Mexican State to do so.
But then again us norteamericanos shouldn’t interefere in their affairs.

Apparently, the Arizona Republic cut off half the ad. It was supposed to say …looking for people from Arizona who want to have fun” There are also supposed to be families having fun reflected in the glasses

I’m sorry, I don’t buy it. The guy in the ad is wearing military gear. camos and a helmet. their explanation makes no sense given the military garb.
