‘Blame Bush’ Du Jour: Ending the Gore Marriage

When it comes to things that caused Al and Tipper Gore to lose sleep and ultimately their love for each other, it turns out that George W. Bush was higher on the list than chlorofluorocarbons and Twisted Sister — at least according to a “family friend.”
I’m more than a little ashamed of myself that in my first post about the Gore separation that I didn’t think to blame Bush for Al and Tipper’s marital breakdown — but fortunately CBS News and Sally Quinn were there to pick up the slack:
Family friend Sally Quinn told CBS News correspondent Sharyl Attkisson that Gore winning the popular vote for president but losing the electoral vote may have done the marriage irreparable harm.
“He’s obviously suffered a lot,” Quinn said. “He’ll never get over that and neither will she.”
Video of the CBS piece is here. Yet another thing to add to the list.
The Clintons are still not officially separated though. What a weird decade.
On this topic, here’s a little presidential trivia:
Four candidates won the popular vote but lost the presidency: Andrew Jackson won the popular vote but lost the election to John Quincy Adams (1824); Samuel J. Tilden won the popular vote but lost the election to Rutherford B. Hayes (1876); Grover Cleveland won the popular vote but lost the election to Benjamin Harrison (1888); Al Gore won the popular vote but lost the election to George W. Bush (2000).
Jackson, Tilden, and Cleveland all went through the same thing as Al Gore but none of them ever divorced over it (Tilden was never married and died a bachelor). For many, this is evidence of one thing: George W. Bush is not only unspeakably evil, but now he’s the kind of homewrecker for which there is no precedent! (Sally Quinn is the kind of homewrecker for which there is precedent)
